I relate to the part of using dark colors first. That was how I worked with alcohol markers, with going a lighter color to blend it, but as I switched over to using watercolor, everyone was beating into my head that you HAVE to start light and build up. It wasn’t until I went to a portrait painting class with different teachers where they showed me that you can do the same with watercolors. It simplifies so much and it is very helpful! Anyways, I love this. It really looks like you had fun making this and it is nice to see you make peace with watercolors.
Yes! and it's also super helpful to know which pigments are more staining so if you love using lots of water but plan to go from dark to light, the lower layers don't lift up. It's also less likely you overwork the layers as the darkest values are already on the paper for reference and you know what the value balance should look like and make more confident choices in colors you put on paper. Main risk is losing your lightest lights - masking fluids are great for that, as well as doing small scaled prep paintings and looking at them while doing the bigger piece.
Im in love with this piece, and it reminds me of everything i love about your work. I have followed your Journey for a while hoping for an artbook. And now you made it happen, it makes me so happy.
You sound so happy and energized and excited!! This painting is absolutely amazing. You sound so proud and like you had so much fun, seems so appropriate that this will be the cover of your art book!
its amazing how other people do things flawlessly yet mines not even i struggle endlessly.. even though.. ill continue pushing on no matter what.. even though my art really suck, all i need is a harsh and honest critique.. even though itll hurt.
It's so satisfaing see how the colors get mixed and the shadows, the lights, the everything about this video is simply beautiful and relaxing and is awesome to know everything You're sharing into this video 🥰💙 I love it so much💙
You need to have a much much larger bead of water and pigment to get that smooth flat wash. Also, stir up your mix every time you dip your brush to grab more paint, especially with heavier paint particles because they settle to the bottom. Hope that helps. Learning how to do a flat even wash was one of the most important skills I made myself learn because it translates to more than just background washes.
I definitely should've grabbed a big plate or something to make my sky mixture, not sure why i didn't haha so many things I did wrong while painting the sky even though i had done lots of practice runs X_X
There are a lot of reasons why this video has been so great for me to watch. I will say though, I think going off road from what you feel is comfortable for you is sometimes just what you need. You may have strayed away by trying more wet on wet style as well as falling into thinking you have to work light to dark with watercolor, but finding out that doesn't work for you and finding out you don't always have to work light to dark only helps confirm to yourself that what you were doing was working, and only gives you more confidence in your ability going back to painting that way. As well as no matter what you do, you're probably making yourself better or improving in some way, that journey into more wet on wet only helps you become a better artist even when you decide you don't want to work that way. :) Anyway, great video, thank you, and wonderful artwork. I really enjoy what you're doing here and I may have to go on a binge watching session of your channel. Haha! Be well :)
I have been up most of the night looking for inspiration to do a watercolor piece for my son. Then this afternoon I found you. And ...my life is changed .The piece for your book OMG it took my breath away! I place it right up there with the MASTERS . I subscribed, something rare for me. I stand respectfully INSPIRED.
I'm so glad to see how far you've come! I've been watching your videos for awhile and I'm really glad you're able to achieve some of your goals via UA-cam, Patreon and even Kickstarter! I've backed your book and am looking forward to getting a copy soon! You've worked so hard to get to this point and I'm glad to see your succeed! Excellent work as always!
Hi Chris I've been watching your videos now for the past 3 months and I really enjoy every one of them when you were talking about working in the animation industry I can relate to that I was at Disney for 2 years. Your work is fantastic thank you for posting all of this wonderful work.
Thank you for the wonderful, detailed tips in this video! The painting works so well for your artbook cover! I adore the blue sky and gentle sunshine! Your understanding of colour and pose and your ability to create such dreamy, whimsical work is second-to-none!
It's incredible to hear about your planning process and how you choose to tackled this illustration, loved this video and the final illustration is amazing
I'm so glad you mentioned starting from darks with watercolours. I am primarily a digital artist, but I have enjoyed some watercolour classes except... I kept being told to start from the light colours and I just hated that and kind of ended up thinking maybe it's not for me. Once I get a bit more time and sleep (I have an infant and it's not the right moment in my life with a pandemic to complicate things to boot) I really want to give it another go the way I want to rather than the "right way".
This piece is magnificent. All of your art is absolutely breathtaking! I just found your art and I am completely smitten! As soon as I heard the you were kickstarting the booked I backed immediately! Thank you so much for all this amazing art to admire!
You've inspired me to revisit watercolor and colored pencils, and I can really relate to what you're saying about the pencils - I've been using it to experiment over other medium and it lets me to enjoy the process. It's actually helping me to be less anxious with my mistakes. I can't wait to see your artbook in person and explore your art more :)
This was so cathartic for me.. You said such key things that I struggle with using watercolour.. I want control but also use the dynamics of the medium I adore using coloured pencil with watercolour, it not my fall back, its key to my art. But I tend to wait too long and muddle around with the base watersolour. And also my proces is putting in the shadows first. I`m working on a way to put in highlight colour and finding the medium tones that will connect them. Art is such an amazing proces.. Thank you for sharing yours.
I can’t believe it’s been 3 years I’ve been subscribed to this channel, been there for the first video, felt like it was just last year. Time passes so fast.
i listen to youtube as i paint and after 5 mins of talking about a blue plaint i was thinking that's so overdramatic .. then i clicked to see the video and wow . .. okayyyyy . .. that's some amazing art
I love your art work and I really appreciate you sharing your process. Magnesium hue is my all-time favorite blue and I had no idea Windsor and Newton carried it. Thank you for sharing!
congrats on the art book and congrats on how much progress you maid with that painting! Those were all really great tips and things to think about, and it sounds like you’re getting over the watercolor frustration.
congratulations on your artbook chris! also, this piece is one of my favorite of yours, and somehow i kind of knew you had a good time painting it? ajlksj idk how to explain it, but it's good to see how confident you were in your clear vision of the piece!
I’ve always gone light to dark with watercolor layers and honestly this way just seems to make more sense for my own comfort! I’m excited to try a painting and do my dark shadows first!! Love it!! So beautiful 😍 so enjoyed watching this and congratulations on your book 💛
Always enjoy your videos! Loved how excited you seem to be about the piece/book and getting to hear about your thoughts/choices while working on it! You are so inspiring and I’m so excited for the day it arrives on my doorstep ❤️✨
Thanks for sharing, Chris! Very excited for you, and me as I've picked up a copy of the book via the early bird! I really like the way you present your work and yourself! Very honest and caring about your audience. Congrats and best of luck for the book project and all future endeavors!!
I love this so much! the style is incredible and works perfectly as the book cover and the title fits perfectly as well and most of all your skill is incredible! Congratulations ❤
This has got to be my favourite piece of yours, and favourite video, favourite marketing posts on Instagram, everything is just soooo.. ah!!😍🤩 Such a beautiful and informative video! Absolutely love it!! Can't wait to purchase your book!
I have never been “into art” and I am 56. You my dear have brought me into art! I’m guessing here but are your characters jumping from a dream world into reality? Do I “get it” too????
I'm so happy that you mentioned that shadow technique. I just read about it in a book about nature journaling by John Muir Laws. It totally helped me fix my anxiety about missing the values I wanted while watercoloring. I loved the technique, but always wondered why I hadn't seen any other artists talking about it. Have you ever used Daniel Smith's Shadow Violet? I did a painting with it on my channel, and I'm really proud of the end result. BTW, my contingency plan is usually "cry and give up." haha.
@@ChrisHongArt If you are going to watch it then be very wary of content warnings/triggers bc this movie can be very rough to sit through and the narrative is very dark, even compared to Satoshi Kon’s other works (imdb has all the triggers listed). I was joking but it is artistically my favorite to watch and analyze. Colors, atmosphere, and cinematography are so good!
your art makes me feel so inspired to work harder! this is one of my favourite pieces from you i think. its the perfect cover and i cant wait to get my hands on your book!
I love your art!! 🤩 and thanks for those tips because I was facing the same difficulties with the shadows I watercolor and you helped me to see it in a different way, which for me personally works better 😃
May I ask if you use reference at all for your poses? I know you do portrait studies but you seem to have an amazing grip on whole body anatomy (in perspective) aswell. Is that all due to live drawing classes? I know the names of most muscles and bones but am still looking for a way to improve more quickly. Thank you and please keep the videos coming😊😊
Did you cut the side off your paintbrush to make a narrower tip? It just looks a bit odd, would it not be easier to use a smaller pointed brush? The results are so beautiful - so whatever you're doing it is simply lovely!
It would be sooo cool if you could add a print of one of your most loved out of your art book as a stretch goal on Kickstarter. Saw your video and instantly backed your campaign
I just discovered your channel... Instant fan! Your commentary was excellent and of course the art is fantastic. Now I'm gonna go watch your other videos. All the best! =)
I just wanted you to know that you're a huge inspiration and reference to me! I'll probably not be able to get your book (because I live in another country) but I'm a fan!! A huge fan!!
Just pledged for a singed copy! Y'know even if I don't get it for some pandemic related reasons I'm glad I was able to help. Keep up your amazing work.
I think you missed the timecode where you are born with a natural talent! :) Appreciate these videos but it's obvious you were born with artistic skills that are way beyond the likes of me and no amount of tutorials are going to change that. Great skills and style. :)
Her artwork always looks like cotton candy! Idk how to explain but yeah!
someone else said that in the live chat!! So interesting, never looked at my art that way!

The face is my favorite. I always admire how your values are so perfect and your painting looks like you carve it from the paper
The best thing about your painting is THE DRAWING. A bad drawing can ruin a great painting. Not the case here. You drawing is exquisite.
