- It happens. I got distracted on a side project trying to get my 1,700 horsepower big block installed into the scrapyard drag truck, but when it came to the transmission, my attempted repair caused another problem. I think we were able to fix it at the end of the day, but it was a learning experience for sure.
Just put on an sfi bellhousing, you’ll need one legally or a shield anyway.
Yes. The way forward.
Ya he is capable of cutting it off
That should be the name of the truck scrappy
That's the name of Veteran Idiot's Mustang.
Junkyard Jake
Keep/preheat area with torch before/while welding..
Great idea, especially for aluminum
S10's are axle wrap hero's.
Thats why i went to trailblazer 5 link rear suspension in mine for the awd build . Last thing i wanted was to bind and un bind the transfer case because the rearend was partying while the front end was trying to do work
Following the 1,700 big block build has been very interesting. The only thing that lost me was the welding you had to do on the rocker arm stands. I can see how it would be upsetting that they did not come fit-ready. Having no knowledge about what you can get away with it just seemed technically weird. I am sure it will work and can't wait to see it run.
I love how @ 4:30 it shows that you color matched your engine hoist to your truck. Nice thinking ahead.
Practice makes perfect. Thanks for the lesson of taking every opportunity you can to sharpen your tools.
I tried welding a pump rub hole in a np261xhd out of a gm, I had really bad luck, I’d weld it and it would crack, and it’s not like it’s a very large weld, did some reading up on it and they put manganese in the aluminum alloy to make it stronger and more wear resistant, which made it weld poor and crack
I love the weekly OCD comments you make. Another great video.
Is that an LS George shirt your wearing 👌. Your OCD is out of control Lawrence 🤦♂️😜 hahaha
Thats what I saw too. Hey, I have one of those shirts!
He always wears cleetus merch
I came here to say the same thing
Take the 4.3 and put it in the Tracker
I hope you don't mind I'm going to steal all your ideas for the S10 cuz I'm loving the way you're referring to it that's like my favorite truck I was going to try the big block and then kids came so now we going to years later
Can’t wait to see your end results on both trucks! Nice work and great thoughts on both
2 things, make sure any grinding blade, buffing wheel ( make sure stainless only ) , carbide bit , has never been on anything but aluminum ( steel will inbed itself in tool) also you should after grinding clean with some sort of aluminum brightner.
Nice work LT and and your attention to detail is awesome!!
I'm no welder but shouldn't you preheat cast aluminum like cast iron? Maybe not possible on the housing with all the guts in it. Glad you are using it as a learning experience and bringing us along.
You should do a watts link rear end in the s10. That would be super cool.
I think the case can handle it but like someone else said get an sfi bell housing and go to extreme automatics i believe they have a valve body they designed that will handle that power level thats what the guy with the escalade went with on his lscalade that if i recall made like 2000 to the tires but everything else kept breaking before them
I wanna put a twin turbo 3800 in an S-10
That would be sweet.
I’ve broken two of those cases because the dowels have been stuck on the big blocks I wad taking them off of
We all wanna hear it too, brother
I don’t believe that you caused the 2nd crack. It was already there when they broke the upper boss, the thermal expansion exposed it! Try doing a low pre- heat, wrap the housing with thermal blanket throughout entire process pre thru post.
I’d like to see you attempt to use stainless headers bbc turbo manifolds for this build
Very likely will be building my own for this one
@@LawrenceTolman I only suggested this route because not everyone can fabricate one. It would be nice to see someone use something that bolts on and just have to worry about cold side and hot. If it’ll even work not hardly any turbo 8.1 videos by others.
If you are going pro touring on the s10, use a watts link instead of a panhard bar
Down here in tallahassee fl there are 3 4x4 4l80e at pick n pull if you have the connections to people down here, nobody ever gets them
Here in Houston Texas, I snagged 3 of them, but they are all 2wd
How much are they going for in Florida I’m in nc looking

Buy a new case, swap the guts over for the S10, then use the empty welded up case as a mock up for future builds.
45 👍's up LT thank you for sharing 🤗
Looks like the S10 broke the driveshaft at the weld when it wheel hopped.
I have never welded at all but I have seen a couple videos where people weld on cast iron, turbo exhaust housings, and they quite literally preheat the entire thing. Is that not something you need to do when welding cast aluminum?
Preheat can be a game changer when welding aluminum. Heating with steam can also help wash impurities out of the pores of the aluminum.
More of the S10 please!
One day my friend had a bit to much to drink and dropped the trans on the floor the bell housing cracked and we still mounted it and it worked fine lol
Not a good idea grounding to the motor mount. Hopefully the ground path stayed in the block and didn’t choose a path across a connecting rod or some other rotational part.
You should make one of them youtube shorts on the s10 wheel hop 😅
OCD can be a B sometimes.Have you ever thought of doing a "customer states vid"?anyway love you work.
LT re: your comments on the S10 being AWD and your plans for this build, I'm curious - was it the COPO stepside that made you fall in love with hooking all 4 corners at the dragstrip?
Yes, definitely the copo truck inspired this build, mostly after taking it to the speed/stop challenge. The s-10 will be everything the copo truck was, but better. Lighter, faster, and better handling is the goal
I know you have your LT ways but couldn't you have just put a 3/16" spacer between frame and motor mount where it bolts up?
Ultra bell? Seems much better/easier
Do a how to rebuild a 5.3 video. It should get you a ton of views. Then, follow up with a power adder video for 5.3. That 5.3 is extremely relatable for most people.
the crack must be why guys use a propane torch to preheat
I wanna hear it, too!
Just wondering why didn’t you go with a TH400??
Its just an indpection hole…..send it!!!
My project truck is the Mill Truck. Buy we haven't named the Supra yet. Its been called the Farm Fresh supra for now.
Thats how gm should have offered the ‘03-‘05 S.S. Trucks……although i prefer the intimidator ‘06 2wd versions myself…..due to gas economy circumstances….but for a weekend toy i think i can do an AWD unit
What front differential and transfer casse are you planning on using that'll handle 1700hp?
Can you cut the bell housing off and bolt a metal bell housing onto the pump bolts?
Yup, also an option. I believe Reid makes an SFI certified one for just that purpose
The grinding makes my teeth hurt. It sounds just like the dentist's tooth grinder 🤢
At 17:10 you are talking about the awd front diff in the s10, how has that been daily driving it in two wheel drive?
Haven’t really noticed any difference to be honest. The push button 4x4 still engages like normal if needed, and when in 2wd I don’t even notice the front diff compared to when it had the disconnect
Is your crank cut for keyway for front balancer
Yes it is
Why not just get an aftermarket bellhousing from Jegs or Summitt?
But where’s the fun in that?
I would have just bought a bolt on bell
Put a bell on it LT
Wait.... I'm actually first for once?? Haven't finished the video yet but it'll be great per the norm
Nope, I'm first!
Third! Lol
Just cut it off and put an ultra-bell on it.
Don't break stuff.
A 12 cylinder version of this engine could power a ww2 fighter plane; incredible!
Scrappy the drag truck easier name lol
Stop talking like you are back on powerblock. Talk to the camera like we are there and are your best friends. Stop for a minute. Don't just say words nonstop for minutes on end. Say something look around for a minute then say something again. VGG is good at this and makes you feel like you are they and not in shop classes with an amount of stuff he has to get through. Best of luck.
VGG is terrible. So long winded and his channel drags on terribly slow. I can't watch it.
.188 is an 1/8 lol
no it isn't.
3/16
Sell it, move on.
Junk it, that truck needs a manual anyways. Plus it would be better for views 🤷♂️
I better see this truck at BMP at cleetus awd callout ❤❤
