- This is a test of the 100 gr Wac'Em Steel EXP 3 Blade mechanical.
Here is summary of my 2024 Testing Procedure & Scoring w/the scores of this head posted in parenthesis as well.
1. Flight Forgiveness (20%, 18 pts)
I'm using a Killer Instinct SWAT X1 crossbow, mounted to a BOG tripod, shooting a 670 gr Bishop Archery GOAT bolt (300 fps) at 30 yds. Field points consistently hit in the 10 ring & bullseye. I use the exact same bolt to shoot the broadhead. The only difference in the two shots is the broadhead's flight forgiveness vs that of the field point. A bullseye gets a score of 11/10, or a perfect score of 20 + 1 Bonus Point. The 10 ring gets a 10/10, or 20 points; a 9 ring gets a 9/10 or 18 points...& so forth, with each wider ring being 1/2" farther from the bullseye. Mechs are also given 1 Bonus Point for extra forgiveness.
2. Cut Size (20%, 14.16 pts)
The more tissue being cut, the more lethal the head, all else equal. The entrance cut, total cut, & width of the cut (a crucial variable for bloodletting) are all scored:
The entrance cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" then that fraction is weighted to 7% of the score. (1.2” = 3.36" pts)
The max cut size is compared to a standard of 2.5" as well, then that fraction is is weighted to 7% of the score. (2.25” = 6.3 pts)
The max cutting diameter is compared to a standard of 2.0", then that fraction is weighted to 6% of the score. (1.5" = 4.5 pts)
3. Blades (20%, 18 pts)
Initial sharpness (9%, 184 grams = 10/10 = 9 pts + Bonus & Edge Retention (9%, +78 grams = 8.44/10 = 7.6 pts) are measured using the Edge On Up Sharpness Tester. The pressure needed for a blade to cut thru a copolymer wire is measured in grams.
Edge Retention is the loss of sharpness after the head is shot in Penetration Test 1, thru 1/2" MDF & 2/3" rubber foam mat & Clear Ballistics FBI gel. For every 50 "grams" of sharpness lost, 1 point is deducted from 10.
What are some sharpness scores for common edges?
A butter knife takes 2000 grams of pressure to break the co polymer wire.
A new high end cutlery edge: ~ 375 grams of pressure.
A utility razor blade: 200 grams.
Based on the many broadheads I have tested, here is my scoring scale:
Out of the Box Sharpness:
0-200 gr: 10
201-300 gr 9
301-400 gr: 8
401-500 gr: 7
501-600 gr: 6
601-700 gr: 5
Ease to resharpen or replace blades is judged & given 2% of the score. (7/10=1.4 pts)
4. Penetration (20%, 17.57 pts)
There are 2 penetration tests:
Pen Test 1: 1/2" MDF, 2/3" rubber foam mat, Clear Ballistics FBI gel. Depth of penetration is compared to a standard of 9" & weighted to 10% of the score. (9" = 10 pts)
Pen Test 2: Layered cardboard. # of layers penetrated is compared to a standard of 70 layers & weighted to 10% of the score.
( 53 layers= 7.57 pts)
5. Durability (20%, 13.8 pts)
Each head is shot thru 1/2" MDF 3 times. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 12% of the score. (8.5/10 = 10.2 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot thru 22 ga steel plate twice. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 5% of the score. (6/10 =3 pts)
If a head survives that, it is then shot into concrete once. Its condition is judged 1-10 & weighted to 3% of the score. (2/10 = .6 pts).
Steel plate & concrete are certainly not "realistic" mediums, but they do reveal the outer limits of a head's durability.
BONUS:
+1 pt: mech flight forgiveness
+.16 pts extra sharp blades
TOTAL SCORE: 82.69 pts = 8 Golden Arrows
Price: $13.33/head

Im glad you got them. It was a while back I sent them and wasnt sure they got to you. Im glad you got to test them though. Thank you so much. If anybody else wants to send John some heads to test, please don’t hesitate! Its well worth the small cost!
Thank you so much! I tested 25 heads in a batch, so it takes a while to get them all completed. And now I have another batch of 30+ waiting to be tested.
Thank you to who donated this head for testing. We are all more educated because of it.
YES!
Hey John, I think it might be a good idea to show the running average for the category when showing the quantitative results from each of the tests. It would kind of give us a good indication of where in the realm of broadheads this one falls for each test. Just an idea. Thanks for the videos
Thank you. The overall scoring system takes that into account. The scores are based on an A, B, C, D scale, like in school. And you can look at the score sheets at the end of each year to see how they all do for the previous years as well.
You’re welcome John
Thank you!
I like the diameter and flip back mechanics John, I would consider buying. Thanks for the test!
Thank you
Never been this early to a lusk video before. Lonely in here 😅
Same 😂
:)
John, please review the Raised Lighted Nocks. Thank you for all you do.
Thanks. I may do that in the future. I've been testing Halos now.
You’re Way too optimistic on this one John. Must be the nice spring weather! 😂
Haha. Just try to be fair & objective with the scoring and respectful with the commentary.
Thanks John for this review. I have commented on many of your broadhead reviews. I keep meaning to mention this point. As dense as MDF is, a broadhead that does well through three pass through shots, should do well through a deer. I think there are quite a few hunters that consider certain mechanicals as a one and done head. If I were to ever stray from the tried and true fixed blade heads, I might use one of these. I imagine that these would open really fast and easy behind that tip.
Yeah...but bone at an angle can be even more damaging to a head than the cinder block test.
Thanks for the great broadhead tests. Maybe the SWAT Juggernaut will ne next?
If someone sends me a pack, I'll gladly test them. I have a stack of more than 30 heads waiting to be tested and it's not amongst them.
It's very similar in design to the old Grim Reaper Fatal Steel with an O-ring added.
:)
One quick question. The blades were bent back after shooting through the MDF 3 times, after what shot 1,2, or 3 did you first notice any bending?
They bent a bit on the first one, then more each consecutive time.
One and done. But performed admirably
:)
You sure have that 30 yard shot down pat. Wicked looking head but I would like the blades to be .035 or thicker. Surprised it held up on the MDF at all. 👍👍
Yep.
Bend is better than break. Did pretty well!
Yep
These have been out for a few years so not really new. I shot a doe with one of these 4 or 5 years ago. Not something I would use again.
Okay.
not too bad. im sure it would do fine zipping through a deer, it has a bit of a grim Reaper look to it.
:)
👍
:)
@@LuskArcheryAdventures if you only new my head idea 💡! Mr engineer /Lusk won’t believe what I am working on..
On the next episode of fear factor... walking barefoot through lusks yard
Haha. That’s a good one.
Great test like always but it will not be going in my quiver.
:)
Another mechanical blowing apart
Many of them do that....but not all.
i think i will pass on that one
Ok
no thanks!
:)
