      I agree. I won't shoot a broadhead that fails his tests. I'm not hunting concrete blocks, but if it can survive that test, it will survive anything in the woods.

    • @progradepainting3755

      @@tray22surviving the brick test is the least important out of all his tests. So it really doesn’t matter.

      @progradepainting3755 Wouldn't you agree if it survived the brick it will survive anything in the woods? I am an engineer, and 300% beyond expected conditions is my baseline. If it loses blades in mdf and sheet metal, it is total garbage. I prefer to buy once and resharpen until I lose the thing entirely.

    • @progradepainting3755
      @progradepainting3755 5 місяців тому

      @@tray22 nope, don’t care. I’m not concerned in the least if the broadhead doesn’t survive the rock I hit on the other side of the animal, because I’m a hunter, and I’m 300% concerned with what it does when I do hit the animal, and if I can hit the animal accurately with said broad. Definitely not concerned with aerospace engineering for hunting purposes. We’ve been killing animals with stone points for thousands of years.

    • @tray22
      @tray22 5 місяців тому +2

      @@progradepainting3755 Stone points will outperform many of the fancy heads on the market. Including the grim reapers. KISS doesn't work well for the broadhead market because that would mean the head does its job and is reused without buying a new one every shot.

    6:28 A little wobbly on the spin test there... Is this from the brodhead or the arrow? If the same arrows are being used repeatedly for this testing I have to wonder if the inserts don't eventually get messed up.

    Probably the best whitetail head made. The mini mag sucks the life out of deer. The internal trauma of the mini mag and carnifour is unbelievable. Another awesome test John.

    Have you thought about doing a deflection test? Like shooting at and angle board to see if goes through at that angle or deflects? Would be interesting to see with a 4 blade compared to a 3 blade or even two..?

  • @frankbrowning328
    @frankbrowning328 5 місяців тому +2

    As far as over the top deployment goes they do OK. However, penetration is a little short and sometimes like most of these type, the blades may not deploy on initial penetration so the entrance hole may be less than full diameter

    I personally don't like these type of BH, I prefer fixed or cut on contact, only because I have a 26:in draw length, I just don't trust the penetration..
    But I can see how they could be deadly in the right set-up

      I'll speak to my experience. I have a 26.5" draw, 70# bow, 440 grain arrow.
      I killed a mule deer with a grim reaper fatal steel at 64 yards. STEEP quartering away, it entered just Infront of the right rear quarter and exited behind the shoulder in the pocket on the other side. The arrow went coast to coast and ROCKED that deer. He went about 100 yards, downhill, bedded up and died.

    I feel that four blades are just too much for penetration. I use 3 blades. Open a nicer hole over a slit of two blade. No more than 1 3/4” diameter. 1 3/8 is great. 125 gr. Does anyone else prefer 3 blade over 4? Doesn’t matter?

    • @LuskArcheryAdventures
      @LuskArcheryAdventures  5 місяців тому +1

      Each are better in different situations. A 3 blade cuts bone in 3 planes. But a 4 blade only cuts bone in 2 planes. In softer tissue a 3 blade can penetrate better, especially if it has a smaller cut size. But in bone, the 4 blade has an advantage of cutting thru it in only two planes and of course it often cuts more total tissue.

  • @mitchelpeterson8073

    Just an idea, maybe for next year's tests. Use the scale on the sharpness tests to show how many grams of force it takes to open the mechanical broadheads to their full open position. I haven't seen anywhere on the broadhead packaging how many foot pounds or grams of force it takes out of the arrow system to fully deploy them.

    Great review as usual.
    I killed my first deer with grim reaper. They perfom well. I just don't love the small entrance holes that over the top style mechanicals provide. If you get a pass thru they're great. If not be prepared for a sparse blood trail.

      @LuskArcheryAdventures  5 місяців тому

      Thank you. I actually do that :) It’s been a part of the Cut Size score sheet
      for the last 3 years-It’s listed as “entrance cut”. I often show the hole in the rubber foam mat. Front deploying mechs almost always have the same entrance hole as they do in the closed position. If a rear deploying mech does not open properly in the rubber foam mat, I do a secondary opening test on leather, stretched across a cardboard box.

    Grim Reaper while they are becoming good classics they need to get back to the drawing board if they want to keep market share with other mechanicals. The bar is very high right now if not at the ceiling for what a mech head is capable of. Thanks John

    Think i prefer the carnifour because they say the smaller blades deploy when the longer blades hit the hyde so i would think you would get a better entry wound.
