  • I pulled this Ford 351 Windsor engine out of the 67 Mustang Fastback. If you’re following along with the videos, you’ll know that the seller told me the engine was a 302. Well - it’s not. It’s a 351. In this video - I’ll give you a quick run down of how to easily identify the small block ford engine so you can tell the difference between a 302 and 351W
    Spoiler alert: Here’s a quick, easy way to tell the difference between a 289/302 and a 351: the intake manifold. 289/302s both have 12 bolts to hold the intake on, 6 on each side. A 351 has 16, 8 on each side. That’s an easy way to tell the difference without having to lookup casting codes.

    I worked at the Windsor Engine Pant that made the 351. Production was 3 engines per minute - 1200 per shift - should be lots around. I worked balancing the cranks and many of the production line jobs. The toughest job (other than the foundry casting blocks, heads and cams and cranks) was the hot test where the engine was run and final engine balance was done before loading into the box cars.

    The 351 Cleveland I put in my '68 fastback was part of Ford's Pantera project. When the Pantera was canceled, they sent the remaining engines to selected dealers. I used a Sig Erson high lift short duration camshaft, Mallory dual point distributor, Offenhauser 360 intake with a Holley 850 cfm double pump four barrel carb, and Doug Thorley headers. It was a runner. Loved driving it.

      @J.C. Kohle I sold the 351W that came out of this car 3 days after I pulled it. It's definitely not junk, and the person who bought it is putting it back into their '70 Mustang that came with that engine originally, replacing a 6 cyl they had been running for several years.

    I've used the '69-'70 351W heads on two different 289 builds many years ago before aftermarket heads were available. Requires a water port hole drilled in the deck to match the 289 block. It's an old hot rod trick that won't break the bank. Bigger valves and ports. Use flat-top pistons to make up slight increase in CC volume. :)

    A nice lady gave me this 1982 F-150, with a 351W. I found out today that it was made in San Jose Ca., which really means it was made in Milpitas Ca., I know that because my Dad and all my Uncles and my Grandfather all worked there. My Dad worked in the Truck Dept., and the Plant closed that year. So that means that my late Father very well could have worked on this truck. That's why I think I'll keep her. I'm having fun working on her. I'm learning so much. Like the firing order is different for Ca. trucks, because of the EEC-III Ignition system.

    I had a 74 LTD with the 351C that I bought from a wrecking yard for $150. I drove the car for a while and them installed the engine and transmission into a 65 F100 short wide box that I bought for $100. It was one fast truck until the engine spun a bearing. I was rebuilding another 351 Cleveland for a guy who left it and never came back. That was 30+ years ago. So now I am getting some Australian 2V closed chamber heads for it and finishing the build. The fast 65 pickup will live again.

    Your 351W is an early casting that has beefier webs in the mains and a high nickel content. If it has not been bored excessively, it is one of the good ones. It also has a shorter deck height at 9.480" as opposed to 9.503". This is what my race motor is based upon except I've got an SVO crank and Cleveland heads at 11.5:1.

    Just so you know that engine was built in Windsor Ontario Canada. The plant was known as Windsor Engine Plant One. That plant started with the 221 ci V8 that grew to 260 then 289 then in 1969 the plant was converted to build the 351. The plant produced 351's from 1969 until it was closed in 1996. just a little info.

      Hey tom, apparently all oil dipsticks for a 351W are not the same. Any insight on that?

    • @tomlittle5974
      @tomlittle5974 3 роки тому

      @@jordanpeele5306 hi Jordan, the 351 Windsor dip stick changed I think in the late 70's. It was moved from the front cover to the oil pan when we went to the double sump pan. The dipstick is a different length for the double sump than for the front cover version. If you happen to find a 351 Windsor from an Econoline van it will be almost 4 feet long. The assembly plant took out the dipstick and tube we installed and put their own in. I don't know the exact length of the dipsticks but if you mix them you won't get accurate results. The engine you have is an older one so the dipstick is in the front cover. The double sump pan won't fit in your Mustang. so if the stick isn't right then that is what you got. Hope this helps.

    Another way you can quickly id a 351W vs the 289/302 is the height of the distributor base. The base is recessed about an inch below the intake manifold on the 351. The base on the 289/302 is almost flush with the intake manifold. How I would build the engine would be totally dependent on the vehicle it is going into and what the vehicle is used for. I am more of a hot rodder vs a nut and bolt kind of guy. I would keep the short block pretty stock/basic with a better than stock cast piston, good set of rings, stock OE crank. Keep the CR around 10:1. I would then install a good top end kit (heads, retrofit roller cam and lifters, roller rockers and a good dual plane intake) from one of the many good aftermarket manufacturers. I would top it off with either a good 750 or a 780 vacuum secondary carb carb if using an automatic trans with tall gears. If the budget allows a throttle body type fuel injection is even better. Holley makes some great systems for not that much more than a good carb. The automatic learning of the systems is great. The engine will cold start better and run far better without a professional tuner. Of course you have to finish it off with good set of headers. This will produce an engine that should make 400+ HP, a flat torque curve and drive close to stock. Kept the cam overlap fairly wide to retain good vacuum for power brakes. Above all have fun!!

Made good power out of it but never got a final dyno number or a track time in that configuration before selling it. I suspect it was between 360-380 at the wheels based off where the previous configuration was at.

    Besides the intake , the real easy to identify the 351 is the weather neck is in the block 302 is in the intake manifold. If you are lucky you may have c90e ( check number , been a long time ) head they are not common but worth looking for . You can use gt40 head from an explorer 302 about a 20,30 hp bonus ,only deal is the head bolt holes must be drilled to 9/16”,not a big deal ,easy deal my memory is the 2v @4v were the same head v stands for Ventura so just change the intake . All small block 289-302-351 build interchange pits , book explains all of it . Look on line or eBay Do not get gt40p heads these use a quirky ex manifold , no after mkt yet available. In old so fact check #’s these old heads use the large spark plug thread , yep I like my fords !

    I have a 351 Cleveland in a 65 mustang coupe. Runs great but I know very little about it. Guy bought it from a estate and then he never drove it and it sat for 8 years before I got it. He thought it was from a 72 cobra jet torino maybe. He was told the 4 speed was from a 66 falcon but not sure. The motor does have the 4 on the heads so I know its a 4v at least. The trans reverse pattern is over left and up if that tell you anything. Has a holley carb, edelbrock torquer intake and 4:11 gears. Loves to smoke the tires

Both intakes that I have are a 1980 model. Besides all you have to do is thread the 4 extra holes and install some short bolts in them and it should work.

    If memory serves me the 1969 mustang 351w 4v had the highest compression of any mustang that year at 11.5 or 12:1 while even the Boss 302 was at 11:1 but that was in the heads also you may be able to boost it even more by betting a thinner head gasket from a 289 Hi Po special order/optional head gasket that raised that by a few tenths as well... but the 2v and 4v differences were mostly in the cylinder heads. Most all of the parts except the intake manifolds and connecting rods and crank were interchangeable being the differenced from the 289, 302, and 351w was the stroke the 289 and 302 had the same deck height... I know you know this being this is not your 1st rodeo but this comment was mainly for the people new into the classic cars. Also the classic Ford motors seemed to pull different than todays they felt stronger even though todays have about 2x the power.... it is like raw power versus refined power....love the idea of a modern Coyote possibly turbo's or a blower on it for this can't wait to see what you are going to do with this

      @higgs singlet ,not sure I was going on my 69 Mach1 (this was like 25 years ago) I remember there was a difference in the 390 2v and 4v heads and thought the 351w had a smaller combustion chamber on them. I slept since then but I do remember the 351 4V having the highest enginge compression of any of the Ford v8's that year.. I thought the, I thought the 3514v heads had an L shaped port on them for a bolt to pass through as well (may be thinking of the 390 again I slept since then lol)

    Great Video. Just wanted to add some info, yes early 351w intake manifold bolt count is 16 but later year's used 12 like the 302. not sure what year they started this? another quick way to confirm is to measure the width of the manifold, 9.5" on a 302 and 11.25 or so on a 351W

    When I was in high school 1970 I put a 69 cougar 351w in a 67 mustang that had a worn out engine
    I seen this video and the mustang I was thinking wow is that same car
    Ford had a book call staging where you could build up there engines in stages with Ford parts
    So we put 289 hi-po Ford cam and lifters in the 351w kept the 2 barrel in take put a holley 2 barrel 500 now reminder we were in high school with not to much money
    Had trouble finding headers boy that thing run good
    By putting that 289 hi-po cam in the 351w you had to change firing order to a 289 the book From Ford told you to do this
    I was drafted the car was sold the guy who bought it re ran the the firing order to what was cast in the 351 intake that was on it he never got running right again
    I wish i had keep it the book came from a Ford dealer parts department
    One of us worked at Ford parts RIP Gary

    For those of you who have not read all the comments yet-the early 351W engines used 16 bolts on the intake, but the later motors used only 12 just like the 289/302's.. I have a 1976 351W motor and it has only 12 bolts holding on the intake... don't let the bolt count throw you off.. I'd think MOST 351W motors have only 12 intake bolts, unless you stumble across a very early one... They say 76 was the LAST year for the 16 bolt intake, and that 77 forward was only 12 bolt. I have a 76 Engine here and it has a 12 bolt intake on it. It's possible somewhere along the lines someone swapped the heads, and intake... or they just bolted on a later intake to early heads? I'm not sure.. but ima bout to find out.. hopefully not the hard way. I have to pull the intake to change the hydraulic flat tappet lifters over to hydraulic roller lifters, and install a roller cam at the same time. Will see if my heads have the extra bolt holes or not. This was great information, because it got me to researching the 12 vs 16 bolt heads, and what people are saying about the coolant getting into the crank case is enough to scare me to death! I'm pulling the intake to see what is happening underneath that thing. I might end up having to swap heads as well. If so, I'm going aluminum! something that actually flows some air-UNLIKE THE WINE CORK HEADS THAT FORD MADE... What was Ford thinking when they made those worm-hole exhaust ports? Jesus man.. It's like they wanted to kill any chance at the engine making ANY horsepower...

    Hi, I have a 65 convertible, and when I bought it to my horror I found it had a 351 W in it (C090E-6015-B4) and really do not know if anything has been done to it. I was abused one member of the Ford Mustang Club who said that my car is no longer original (true) but also reckoned that the motor will twist the engine bay and front end totally ?? Well i hope not. Anyway I am considering buying a 289 to replace this engine which is actually in pretty good shape. I would be interested to get your opinion ? Cheers, Peter L in Oz...

But I have never put it in because the mustang has a rebuilt 289 engine in it. I heard the D Model is hard to find, does this make it a desirable engine, it’s a long block rebuilt.

    • @ClassicNation
      @ClassicNation  4 роки тому +5

      I would, but the coupe has the matching numbers 289 that I've warmed up a bit. It drives fantastic and I just don't have it in me to pull that trusty old 289 out for something else. That's the primary reason that I decided to get a '67 Fastback in the first place: so I could build it out a little more wild than the coupe!
