    I’ll never understand the “too big for travel” argument that gets tossed around on 16” laptops. Even on a long flight, if you consider take off/landing/eating/resting, how much actual time will you spend working on the laptop in your seat? An hour, maybe 2? And is that even work that is so life or death it needs done during a flight? Compare that to the days/weeks you will be able to use the machine while on your trip, taking advantage of the screen size, battery life, etc. Why limit yourself for the 98% of the time you need the laptop for a theoretical 2% that might just slightly less optimal?

      I thought that, too, so I bought the 16". I was amazed by it at first, but then I got used to it. Recently, my work issued me a 14" MacBook Pro, so for the past month, I've been using both around the house. Honestly, I prefer the 14". I am almost always plugged into a monitor when I'm at a desk, and when I'm not at a desk (like right now), I really like the smaller size. I do notice the difference quite a bit, especially going from meetings to my desk, desk to my home, being able to use a smaller bag, etc. Also, the 14" is not particularly small, and you can always just make up for it by being a bit closer to the screen. I can also sidecar an iPad or something like that. Battery life is so ridiculously good on these things that even if the 16" is better, I don't really feel the difference. There's always Low Power Mode if you need to conserve power. Also, you can use a less beefy charger to charge the 14", so that's another plus. I'm selling my 16" and put in an order for a 14".

      @@mbvglider Yeah, totally agree on that one. I had an M1 air, and while it's a great little machine, I always thought that it's a little too small, so wanted to upgrade to a 16" MBP. But I also have a windows work laptop, which is a 15.6 Dell machine, and it's always been super annoying to carry around, it's huge and heavy. I thought that the MBP will somehow be more managable, but after checking it out in a store, it turns out it's actually even bulkier, lol. So I went with a 14" and really happy with my decision. It's so nice in almost any situation - to carry it around, to work outside, or on your couch. Don't even wanna touch my windows laptop now. The only downside is that it gets HOT, again was hoping for some apple magic like the fanless and cool MBA, but nope. At least it's silent.

    4TB is more then enough, the smart thing to do would be instead of spending 1000-1400E for 4 more TB, to buy up to 3 external 4tb drives, allowing you to take more backups and clones of the backups until you reach your home where you can dump it all within your NAS

    It's funny, I think this video shows that the larger and heavier Macbook Pro is best for people doing the most travel. The screen size is so important and the battery life is incredible.
    I went with the 14" M1Max MBP because it's essentially my desktop computer that is often times plugged in to my 32" monitor for video work.

    I bought a 16" MacBook Pro late last year, but my work issued me a 14" MBP (w/ full CPU + binned GPU), so for the past month or so, I've been using both, and I honestly like the 14" much more. It just feels friendlier and easier to use. The 16" stays on my desk for "serious" work, and the 14" gets thrown into bags and used seriously as well as casually. And since the 16" rarely leaves my desk, it ends up being a glorified desktop, since I leave it docked into a monitor and TB hub, I don't even use its keyboard, speakers, webcam, and trackpad, whereas the 14" actually gets used as a laptop. It's convinced me to sell my 16" MBP and buy a 14" instead for myself, a 24-core M1 Max, since it seems like 32-core M1 Max is only worth it in the 16" form factor.

      14” max might seem having overheating issues. And one thing is worse battery life. But what comes to screen size, usually the bigger ones are required just when traveling, at home you use external monitor. So quite funny that ”mobile users” don’t like the extra screen estate.

M1 Max still has very good battery life, much better than any Windows laptop, but it's not as good as M1 Pro. Overheating is just not an issue for me. Also, there's low-power mode which you can use when you need more battery life. I think the 14" Pro would have been enough for everything, but I just bought the Max because I could.

    I chose the 1TB 16GB base. Due to the fact 2800 dollars is a lot. But I needed it asap. Amazon said 4 days Apple said 4 months. Lol. It works great for editing gaming videos for my side job, and works great for vlogs.

    I'm wanting a new Mac and have been going back and forth between a maxed out Air-M2, a 14" M1-max, or a 16" M1-max. I'm OK with 2Tb hard disk and I could live with 24Gb of RAM. The Air-M2 is nice and small and light, but seems to heat up which would be a drag if I'm using it on my lap. I love the idea of a bigger and better 16" screen, but I did worry about the weight and what it would be like if/when I'm using it on my lap. The 14" Mac would be a nice compromise.weight-wise. Knowing that the 16" doesn't often heat up much has made me lean more towards it. Finally, the extra ports on the 14" and 16" Macs make me lean towards them. I still have an old 2014 11" macbook air that I could use if I really need something light for a while. When will I ever come to a final decision!?

      Haha, Marnix, I really feel for you! I'm in the same boat. Maxed out Air M2 or M1 Pro 14 vs 16 inch. I just got back from comparing the speakers on each of them. The Air M2 sound like a tin compared to the Pros (just like my MB Air 2013). I was blown away by the 16 inch speakers, even better than the 14 inch. I'm big on sound, so the 16 inch wins. The M2 Air heats up badly, which will destroy its battery in the following years + throttle the chips too often + make your lap really sweat. I also noticed the 14 inch warming up during a single 15 minute YT video, when the 16 inch was still cold to the touch playing five 4k videos in the background, a big plus! I'd rather have a heavier cold laptop on my lap than a machine sliding off my lap because of the amount of sweat. I hope I'll be able to decide soon too, want mijn oude Air wil dringend met pensioen! :D Good luck!

    Ever since my 2012 15inch MacBook Pro broke down I've been working on a Mac mini, which doesn't allow me to work outside my home let alone change locations in different rooms in my house. And are you telling me people complain that the 16inch M1 MacBook pro is too big to carry it around? Trust me, it is way more portable than a Mac Mini. LOL

  • @mrwriter86

    I'm late to the party, BUT...
    ...I paid around £3,500 in 2018 for a 15 inch MacBook Pro maxed out with i9, 32gb RAM, Radeon 560x 4gb, and opted for the 1tb SSD. Easily one of the worst buying decisions ever made. The thermal throttling meant that NO pro-work could be done efficiently. Tap. Wait. Tap again. Wait. Scrub through video. Wait. Beach ball. Wait some more. You get the point.
    Last week I finally had enough, it almost went through the window in rage at how absolutely incompetent this thing is. I don't normally opt for AppleCare but I did on this one, and thankfully so. It needed;
    - New Battery
    - New Keyboard
    - New Logic Board
    AND, a screen replacement which I had to fight for after making the argument that the screen damage caused by oils on the keyboard keys was MY FAULT rather than Jonny Ive making the laptop so thin that when the screen's closed it touches the keyboard, transferring the oils accordingly. BAD, bad design. Oh, and all of this was done after it was sent to Apple for the second time, having failed to successfully diagnose and replace the parts required the first time.
    I know the M2 Pro's are likely just around the corner. I was so impressed by the M1 Pro after the announcement that I felt cheated with my 2018 purchased. I waited it out to see if any M1 "gate" issues became apparent, and maybe I'd go for an M2 Pro.
    However, the "cost of living" crisis that we're going through shows a trajectory of price increases across the board. So, rather than waiting a couple or so months for the M2, a few things occurred to me...
    1 - The new MacBook Air has a 20% premium on top. No longer can you get a current model Air for less than $1k. That's a sure sign that the next gen models of other MacBooks will likely see a price jump.
    2 - The value of older MacBooks will likely remain stable or possibly even see a small increase, similar to what we saw with second hand vehicle valuations in recent times.
    3 - Apple products are usually discounted towards the end of that cycle, indicating a new model is soon to be announced.
    There's no way I could drop another £3,500 out of my account, BUT, I need a machine that's part of the Apple ecosystem, and accepting that I'd have to compromise somewhere I began searching. To my surprise, here's what I found...
    MacBook Pro 2021, 16 inch, M1 Pro with 16gb RAM for just under £2,200. After watching countless YT videos to convince me that I NEEDED 32gb, I found that there wasn't much out there and instead, the 16gb attracted quite the praise. The main focus being that the SSD memory swaps at up to 200gb/s combined with the M1 Pro chip put out surprisingly positive performance levels.
    So, here I am, typing on said laptop. I have pushed this laptop with the applications I use regularly. I cannot get this thing to slow down! I feel like I'm living in the future. No longer is my focus on how sh*t the laptop is, but instead I'm loving the experience and my productivity has gone up. Oh, and I can finish earlier, too, meaning more time with family.
    I had my reservations but for £2,200, whilst expensive, provides incredible value for money when you consider what a powerhouse this thing is. That amount of money has given me not just the kind of performance that I (naively) expected from the maxed out 2018 model, but way, WAY beyond and more.
    When Apple announced the 2015 MacBook 12, it stunned many with its sleek new design. Little did we know that this was the start of many years of Apple ownership hell. Form, did indeed outshine performance. Today, though, I feel like Apple is back on the right path. It's driven competitors to push forward faster and compete more with pricing, all of which is good for us as consumers.

    Does it fit in hotel room safes? Sometimes when I travel in Southeast Asia, the hotel room safe can be tiny. I don’t think I would be comfortable leaving equipment this expensive just in a bag in the room, would hate for it to disappear. The 14” is more likely to fit in most safes. It’s a fab laptop though.

    • @tatianabritton6258
      @tatianabritton6258 2 роки тому +1

      most places I’ve traveled to normally don’t fit the 16” but also keep in mind that hotel staff have access to the safe as well so I wouldn’t trust it. I usually leave mine in my Away suitcase (combination) locked when I head out for the day.

    • @rydmike
      @rydmike 2 роки тому

      @@tatianabritton6258 I’ve been to about and 40 countries and stayed in a few hotels on the way, but not with the MBP 16” obviously, but based on my recollection of safety box sizes I estimated that the size might be a challenge in most cases. Thanks for confirming my suspicion. Yes hotel staff can of course access the safe, usually not all though. In retrospect I have never had anything disappeared from a hotel safe, come to think of not from rooms I stayed in either even if left out, just lucky I guess. A sturdy locked bag is certainly an option too, thx for the tip.
      Btw I ended up getting the 14” MBP, at home/office it is docked to 2x32” 4k screens, so the MacBook’s own screen is not so relevant then. On the road I extend the screen to an iPad that always travels with me anyway, plus for a 3rd screen workstation style setup to a very thin and light hires 13” external screen. Of course this is only something I rig up in the room, not so convenient to setup on the road or in a café 😀

    Hey, I recently ordered a MacBook Pro and after this video I’m so unsure about the configuration.
    I’m studying in IT but am a Photographer at heart, so I bought the 16 inch for the battery and cooling with 32gb and 1tb, thinking, that I could work with my photography’s and little videos from SSD’s or changing between cloud and normal storage. The deliver time is so far away that it would interfere with my move to another country to study further, if I changed the Order. Was my thinking bad? Did I make a Mistake?

      M1 Pro is more than enough for music production and video/photo. More complex workloads would just come down to how much RAM you neeeded. If you regularly edit in resolutions higher than 4K, or vr dev, etc etc M1 Max. tbh M1 and M1 Pro is fine for most ppl. 😀
