I actually bought a 14" a week ago. It came in and I loved it, but couldn't help thinking about its big brother. Sat on it a few days, watched every video out there and read all the forums and couldn't come to any conclusion. Went back in store like you, and had to feel the 16" again. And I think it took your video to finally sell me on it, seriously your words were the best on this topic. Earned a sub from me and helped me make my decision. Returning my 14" to Apple tomorrow and getting the 16"!!!

Thank you! I am so happy someone finally is talking about ergonomics with these!
I'm over 6 feet tall and got to try out the 14 inch this week. I realized that if I have the thing open on a desk and I lean in and hunch over, the screen is a perfect distance from my eyes. But if I sit up straight snd even put the laptop at the very edge of the desk, it's too far away for me, not because 14 inches is too small, but because I'm too tall to sit up straight and not have to squint comfortably use the the 14 inch. You need to try the thing out before you buy it because ergonomics is not something you can feel from a YT video.

The base model 16" has compared to base model 14":
    Small advantages:
    - higher resolution
    - longer battery life
    - larger trackpad
    - 2 more CPU and GPU cores
    - better cooling system
    - bigger speakers
    - more powerful charger
    Big advantages:
    - Larger display will make multitasking easier, watching movies or playing games feel more immersive. People could use an external monitor, but because of the beautiful new display at 120hz you're now more likely to not use some 1080p 60hz external monitor. Buying a new external monitor with similar display quality can also be costly.
    - Better Lap Top experience, especially for men. To prevent 'manspreading' of thighs, men often have to keep tension in their thighs to prevent a small laptop from falling through. A larger laptop will be more stable.
    - Overall better for your posture. You're less likely to hunch over to read small text because the 16inch display is bigger.
    Disadvantages:
    - $500 more expensive
    - Carrying a bigger and slightly heavier device
IMO: the 16" is a better deal for most people who can afford to pay $500 more and can carry a bigger device. The physical size might make it look less optimal for traveling with however it has a larger trackpad/display/speakers/battery which also reduces the need for carrying an external mouse/display/speakers or battery charger. A better cooling system will also make less noise, so you won't bother people around you during heavy workload.

You don't realize 14" and 16" are both small screen sizes. Ideal set up for home is to buy external monitor, you can get LG 38" 38WN95C-W model for $1500. Yes, I know its costly, HOWEVER... Its 38" 21:10 aspect ratio monitor with quad HD resolution and 144Hz refresh rate so comparable to what your Mac has. Its size also means its simply lot easier to work on than your small laptop screen... So yeah sure, 16" is better in many cases, but I think ultimately 14" is better if you plan to use external displays anyway. Its more portable, costs less and can also be fast charged through USB-C while the 16" can't. I think I'd lean toward the large desktop screen + 14" if it was me imo. If you don't plan on using external monitors, then maybe 16".

Yep, I'm in law too and all the UA-camrs only focus on video editing because their career requires high performance. They all suggest that if you don't need the extra performance then go with the 13 inch Air but overlook the fact that performance isn't the only factor that customers consider. It's not simple just to go for the Air due to not needing the performance. Some people need a larger screen, especially those who are in the research field and use split screen mode often, needing research documents and word processors open at the same time without straining their eyes.
I believe the screen is more important now than it ever was. In past generations there was virtually no difference in screen quality between a 16 and 13 inch, both were regular retina displays, that changed with the 14 and 16 inch and becomes a new important factor in buying thar two beyond the performance because it's now the retina display we've has for a decade and the new XDR mini-led which I believe alone is worth close to 1k.

    • @shinychris0400
      @shinychris0400 10 місяців тому

I agree. Besides chipsets and performance of the computer,
Screen Size is a large determining factor for those buying the 16inch. Whether Air or Pro, I think the larger screen size is the more important factor as well as the available price ranges.
      I just got a 2021 model M1 16inch Macbook Pro refurbished for $1,300. (16GB RAM, 500GB SSD)
Especially if you read a lot or meed heavy research besides paper/textbooks, 16inch is the way to go for a good display size not strenuous for the eyes. (Especially during long screen times)

I have a 15 inch MacBook Pro 2017 and replacing it with the M1 Pro 16inch model. • @Crispy_Bee

Well... the actual difference between the 15" (2019) and 16" is very small, right?
    Length: 349,3mm vs 355,7mm. That's 6.4mm.
    Width: 240,7mm vs 248,1mm. That's 7.4mm.
    Height: 15,5mm vs 16,8mm. That's 1.3mm.
I don't think those differences are as big as many people think, the 15" model just had pretty big bezels and the 16" has very thin bezels and the menu bar moved up to the notch on top of the 16:10 display - which means you have quite a bit more screen real estate for work. So the size difference is actually very tiny but the yields are pretty huge!
The only big difference is the weight. 1,8kg vs 2,2kg - that's getting very close to 1/2 kg heavier and that might be an issue for some - but the size difference most likely won't be an issue.

You say that needing power and portability is a weird case and you mostly imply that 16 is just superior. I don't agree. I feel like needing power and portability is the most common case, as it is a LAPTOP, not a desktop. People carry this everyday to work and back home. On the contrary, I would argue that 16' is pointless as if you work from home, you would or should have a large 24'+ monitor, which would be a much better solution for productivity. Yes, the monitors on new macbooks are great but working daily on a laptop's 16' screen is not something comfortable even for simple business users, not talking about programmers and creators. Plus, working on a laptop is bad for your back, as the screen is too low.
I think that macbook pro 14 is the machine to go because if you need that kind of power you should have good monitors both at work and home. And carrying a 2.1kg laptop + powerbrick in 2022, come on. My asus shitty notebook from 10 years ago weighs the same. And even Thinkpad's 16' P1's weight is closer to 14' than to 16' macbook. Also, the palm rest on the 16' is so huge, my watch always scratches it.
Laptop must be portable for carry. And as good as the screens are, I would prefer to work on 1080p 24' monitor that is on the same height as my eyes than on the best 16' laptop monitor.

Never carry your power adapter on local trips. Keep adapters at both ends, use the battery in between. So remove the powerbrick from the equation. I have 2 x 4K monitors at home and work, but right now I'm watching and writing from a chaise longue with the MBP 16 on a board on my knees.
I'm not sure if 2.2 kg over 1.6 kg is a big concern when one then enjoys a much bigger screen and better cooling for renders.

Great perspective and it makes sense. I use my own laptop in the evenings and weekends on a cushioned lap tray thing, and i don't travel around with it so it's not a portable device and i don't feel the weight of it. So for me, having the extra screen size helps with multi-tasking and with watching video content and the extra battery life and trackpad size is also a nice bonus. Yes the 16" is more expensive but buyers remorse costs more. I've bought laptops and not liked them and been frustrated by them for years as I buy things until obsolescence/breakdown rather than having the money to keep buying new things or selling and rebuying more.

Interesting points. I have just ordered a 16” Pro Max with 32gb. I currently use a 17.3” MSI windows laptop and have that hooked up to an ultra wide monitor. This will be replacing that.
I do some video editing but my primary use is web development and online marketing. With my current 17.3” I really didn’t want to go down in size too much so the 16” was the biggest compromise I have made.
I tend to upgrade my laptop once every couple of years as well. Windows laptops tend to slow down dramatically and I have experienced unscheduled problems which I have to fix costing me time and money. My switch to Apple is based on that and investment in the future.
I hope this new laptop will last at least 5 years by which time it will have paid for itself in terms of what I would have outlaid for two windows laptops in the same period. I probably don’t need that much power right now, but seeing how my current laptop has struggled with new Adobe updates, my logic was to be able to have plenty of room for growth.
Like your good self, the reviews out there aren’t really that applicable to other users so it’s good to hear a different perspective on different use.
Watching your review has made me all the more convinced that I have made the right decision in the $3400 model and looking at both my needs now and in 5 years time.

But since then I have upgraded the Mac from HDD to an SSD. And I have acquired an Asus ROG for gaming and converted an old Dell as an experimental Linux machine. Other than that we have a windows machine for work. In my field most of our work is interacting with windows especially connectivity. Macs are used only at a superficial level. And a lot of my work requires larger screens 27 inch screens I usually need 2 for data viewing and analysis. Hence a smaller laptop is fine for portability but I need an external monitor or can plug into conference facilities if needed. Power wise there is no issue as most jobs can run on the server which does the heavy lifting.

Having a bigger screen on a future notebook for work would still be great to allow for more efficient workflow while working from places outside of our offices. With that being said, even a (slightly) bigger screen could obviously never match a decent two screen setup.

Good topic, it's something I've analyzed recently, I've decided to get the 16" M1 MBP to replace my 2013 15" i7 MBP, the size and weight are very close, it's only .24lbs/.11kg heavier. looking forward to silence and better screen, I'll run Air Display to use 11" iPad Pro as second screen. The 16" will fit my Think Tank photo backpack and laptop bag perfectly.

I think “it needs to be mobile” is often overstated for the average person. Most people use it in a backpack. Pull it out, put it away… or barely move around with it ever.
    Losing screen means losing productivity
Losing weight means, okay I guess this is nice

I wished I would have seen this video sooner. I just purchased a 14” MacBook Pro, received it today, and now I’m returning it. I’ve had mostly 13 inch laptops until my 15 inch 2013 MacBook Pro. I thought using a 14” with higher resolution wouldn’t be a big deal. Man, I regretted it as soon as I booted it up. It’s a ptretty nice machine otherwise, but viewing documents were more cumbersome. Will be returning it in the morning and getting a 16” model.

Hey, I am trying to decide if I should switch to the 14" or the 16" one from the mid-2015 15" MBP that I have been using for the last few years for software development at work. I personally love smaller form factors but I don't really know if going an inch smaller might turn out to be an inconvenience workwise. How's your experience with the 16" been so far?

Thanks a lot for one of the best videos on the topic! Coming from a 14" Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon with a screen resolution of 1920 x 1080 (with the current models now offering 1920 x 1200), I also looked at the 14" vs. 16" MacBook Pros. The 14" MacBook Pro has roughly the same size as the X1 Carbon. It offers a comparable screen real estate of 1512 x 982 by default (half the native resolution in each dimension) and up to 1800 x 1169 (including the notch; 1800 x 1125 excluding that thing). This would be a step back for me and screen real estate is also very important for my use cases. The 16" MacBook Pro is much larger and heavier than the X1 Carbon. However, it is an improvement in screen real estate because it offers 1728 x 1117 by default and, here it comes, up to 2056 x 1329 (including the notch; 2056 x 1285 without it). And it is about the same size as my ancient 15" MacBook Pro from 2012 (which I used until I switched to the first X1 Carbon). While it is much heavier than my X1 Carbon (which is lighter than the 14" MacBook Pro), the current 16" MacBook Pro is lighter than my 2012 15" MacBook Pro. Thus, for me, it would be the 16" MacBook Pro. A 15" M2 MacBook Air likely wouldn't do the job because I need to connect two monitors.

Short answer: No. Long answer: Noooooo
I come from a 5 year period of using a 6.5lbs 18'' gaming laptop as my run and gun machine. Compared to this I feel like I can take the 16'' everywhere. It's all about perspective and the incredible screen is absolutely worth it.

    • @S3XYEV
      @S3XYEV 2 роки тому +2

Well said!! 😎 It's all perspective. Now that I have used the 16" MacBook M1 Pro for weeks, it feels/looks small to me! 😅 ....I put it on top of my friend's new 15" Asus, and it was the same size and thickness! ....It was a bit deeper (taller), as the Asus is 6:9 aspect ratio instead of 16:10. Now thats a NEW 15" PC laptop ......I used to carry around everywhere my 15" PC laptop, from a few years back, and it's TWICE as thick as the MBP 16", bigger dimensionally, and weighs like nearly TWICE as much!! People forget laptops like this, and the Dell XPS 17, are being put in form factors that are the size of laptops with 1" to 2" smaller screens. I can pick this up, flip around - I'd never be able to do that with my 15" PC laptop, it's a BRICK! -- and I can fit it in even a 15" laptop sleeve, slide it into my 15" laptop backpack. It's perfect................. 💜😊

It's a lot bulkier than the 13" M1 model I had but also the features are worth it including speakers, nice large display to watch movies on and great cooling. I did make a mistake on not getting enough memory. 16GB is not enough for a heavy multitasking / browsing tabs user. With M2 Max I'll do 32 or 64. If you're not a going to be editing high-end video and if you currently use that HP or Dell your company gave you and that was enough, buying a 16-in because it's the more powerful laptop is just you being bougie. You won't notice the difference in performance between a 14, and 16 inch. I fact, if you want to carry a "Pro" model, just get the 13 inch. Even the new Air M2 will do the trick. I see so many go and spend the money on a top of the line model when they don't do any pro work what so ever.
