I bought the 16" Max 32 cores and 32 GB 4TB - because I was fearing the 14" would overheat on regular tasks which I HATED on my 13" intel. When I received it I was a bit laid down by the size and weight compared to the 13" I was used to. Fast forward 2 months later ... I love this Mac, and would pick the 16" any day. I got used to the size and now all the other laptops and their small screens really seem too small to work on. The heat is very moderate and I have never heard the fan once! The screen is great, the size, the luminosity, the keyboard, the speakers are so great. And man .. 4TB ... I have a lot of sound banks for music productions and still 2TB free. Overall best Mac I ever had.
After 2 months of use, I can confidently say that it has elevated my work to another level. Like really, this is a great great tool. Bigger faster and more powerful is always preferable for computers. Saves you so much time
Fully agree. The 16" is full comfort when using it, even on a couch or in bed (combination of screen real estate + less noise + less heat). These main advantages easily compensate for the more weight drawback, at least to me. Coming from a 2014 15" MBP, it practically makes almost no difference. And silver of course. Classic colour all the way!
I also have a 2014 15 inch MacBook Pro, it mysteriously died on me a week ago, and it always got very hot and made it uncomfortable to use, but after hearing what UA-camrs and you have to say, I think I'm gonna go for this model.
I went with the 16” too. I’ve heard so many youtubers saying like “It’s too big for working on a plane or bus!!” Like dawg, then stop saving all your work for when you’re traveling
I went back and forth with 14” max, 16” base. My final decision- 16” Pro (not max), 32gb and 2TB. Have it for 4 months. The battery life without the max is mind blowing, iPad 12.9” pro for plane and portability. Thanks for doing these videos!
But do you feel like the M1 Pro will hold up performance-wise for years to come as well? I mean the battery life can't be THAT much better, can it? That's the main reason I'd pick the M1 Max so it's "future-proofed."
@@naturallymitch I had the max but I use VMs for cloud computing if your not do multilayer 4k videos editing or Virtual Machines then the max is over kills “future proofing” to a max for performance that you’ll never use is just a waste of money IMO
@@Legendofzedia Thanks for that. I will almost exclusively be editing 4k footage often along with large photo batch editing in LR and PS, and who knows what else down the road.
Size was an easy choice. I loved my 17" MBP, especially for couch surfing. The M1 Max was an easy desicision because I knew I wanted to power 3-4 4k monitors for work. I struggled with 32 vs 64 GB of ram. I went with the 64 GB even though it took an extra month and a half to arrive. I don't regret it one bit. 16GB was always a limiting factor for me on the 2017 MPB. 32 just didn't offer enough head room for the next few years. It's not rational and I don't need it but when I spend 8+ hours a day working on the machine it's nice to never be slowed down or limited.
Are you a dev? I do have a M1 Air 16GB and ram is kinda limiting myself now. I do have to compile about 16 Java services locally and I gotta buy something better. I was thinking about the 16 inch 32GB M1 Pro
I started with the 16” MacBook Pro with the M1 Pro chip, 16Gb ram and 1TB storage. I returned it for the 16” M1 Max, 32Gb Ram and 1TB storage as soon as one finally came available and I am glad I did. I have a DJI Mavic 2 Pro and Zoom, and the video editing capability and future proofing were the reasons I switched. Am happy with my decision to this day! My first Apple laptop, might as well go whole-hog.
Good to hear. Initially I was interested in the 14" MBP but am tending toward the silver 16" M1 Pro 10-Core, 32GB, 1TB for use on my desk in clamshell mode with external 4k monitor and stereo speakers. When travelling, for most things I have other small Android and Windows devices and an iPhone - I'm not expecting to travel AND edit videos. Travel and e-mail or check-in online yes. So it will be occasionally portable but mostly static. The 16" has much better cooling than the 14". I'm pleased to see my rationale aligning with other people's.
Interestingly enough, the 16" MBP is literally the same size as the 15.6" 2012 MBP. The 16" is considerably thinner. And of course, the slimmer bezels for a wider screen and larger speakers make the 16" seem much larger.
I just bought the 16inch model to replace an iMac 21,5 inch 2017 model and have no regrets. For me it is more a desktop replacement than a mobile device. I love it.
Interesting video. Seems like a solid example of consumerism and how marketing affects us. I appreciate your honesty! I went through a similar exercise when deciding between 14 and 16 inch M1. I ended up getting the 16 inch, but I never expected to take it off my desk much (which has proven true so far). Thanks for your thoughtful and well-executed content.
I also had a hard decision between 14 and 16", but i knew already- the base model is just fine for me since even that is an overkill af. I had only budget reasons since the 16" was out of budget with 1TB SSD. It was mainly for the sake of still using a Mac - I am running a 2010 MBP 15" since nearly 12 years, repaired and upgraded it multiple times, replaced 3x the battery, but since a fan bearing starts to make bad noises some days ago - i think its time to finally go on and get a new Mac, anyways time to upgrade after 12 years.
Loool I literally returned my 16in for a 14in after I saw your previous video and when I’m using the 14in I realised how much I missed the 16in model and then I went back to the store for the 3rd time and got the 16in back this week, and here it comes with this video. Totally related to those emotional stages and it was the most unique experience for me of purchasing a computer 😂
The weight issue is a big deal if you are lugging it around a lot. I went from a 2012 13” MacBook Pro weighing in at 4.5 lbs to a 2016 MacBook Air at 2.96 lbs. The 1.5 lbs difference was huge! My current machine is a 2020 M1 MacBook Air. I barely notice it’s in my bag. For students who have to walk long distances on campus the weight consideration is significant.
You hit it on the nose, Jerry! I currently have my 14 inch in a box with receipt and ready to go. When you mentioned going back to the 14 inch and not really being underwhelmed but whelmed was exactly the feeling. The benefits outweigh the extra weight, hands-down. The situation I went with was 10/16/16 for both models so I ended up keeping the base model 16 inch with 1TB. Also for kicks I realized my 11 inch iPad is exactly half my 16 inch screen when in Split View and I love that.
I have the 14" with m1 pro. I don't need the extra GPU performance of M1 Max so the 14" is really the perfect device for me. It is a powerful workstation when I need the performance and an ultrabook when I need that. I had the intel version of the 16" MacBook pro for 2 years before my 14". The extra weight of the 16" is not an issue but the smaller footprint of the 14" is really fantastic.
I bought the m1 Max 16 inch MacBook Pro with 24 gpu cores, 32 gb ram and 1 terabyte of storage. I don’t really need that much power but it’s nice to have and I will keep for a very long time. My only issue is the wait time to receive it. It takes two months at least.
Fantastic video! I've had a 15in MacBook Pro for 10 years. I just got the 14in and it's indeed smaller than the 15in. I have not tried the 16in. Debating whether to get both.... Right now, I likely will keep the 14in and view it as a more portable MacBook Pro for traveling and bringing it around my apartment and local travels. I suppose I also could get the 16in too and retire the 15in one.... Most of the videos I've seen have seen folks choosing the 14in as the sweet spot--and I appreciate their perspective. But I also appreciate where you are coming from. Best!
My current laptop, now 7 years old and needing replacement, was a top spec Dell 16inch with 4K display. I've owned, and traveled with, 17 inch laptops so 16 inch isn't a problem for me particularly since these newer laptops with minimum bezels are smaller than earlier generation laptops with 15 inch screens. I have an order for a 16 inch MacBook Pro Max with 64GB RAM and 2TB storage which is only lacking the even larger storage options of up to 8TB. Here's my reasoning for this model versus, say, the Pro with 16GB or 32GB ... I don't upgrade every year and as I mentioned before, my current laptop is 7 years old, so getting a laptop that will last me longer makes more sense than buying a lower spec model but replacing it a year earlier. Let's say a lower spec model lasts me 4 years and the one I order lasts me 5 years, after 4 years I'd get a new unit more powerful than the higher spec model I ordered BUT a year later, if I went with the higher spec model, I'd get a new unit even more powerful than the one a year earlier. And, for 4 of 5 years I'd have had the more powerful model all along. It's hard to make a pure economic evaluation, but if the higher spec model gets you one more year then the delta cost is kind of a wash. I should mention that mu current Dell laptop has been very good but the touchpad has been delaminating for a year or more and at this point is mostly useless -- I use an external mouse. I also have a 6 year old desktop I built for video and image editing as well as CAD work and it to is getting a little long in the tooth so replacing my current laptop AND desktop with a new laptop more powerful than both just makes even more sense.
the problem with your argument... We are talking more or less about the "1st Gen" of Apples ARM CPUs... If the M1 Pro is getting outdated and "too slow", you better dont hope for the M1 Max to be "fast enough" for another year, its probably already "as slow" as the M1 Pro. Thats btw the biggest problem i have with this generation of Macs... as much i like them (and ordered a 16" base model)... they will probably be the first Macs next to the regular M1 chip to be outdated. I have also upgraded my 2010 MacBook Pro. With fast SSD, maxxed out Ram.. but OUTDATED ARCHITECTURES are not getting usable again with "more power". And as sad it is... if the M1 Pro is outdated, the Max will be too, especially since the CPU is more or less the same while the biggest difference is the GPU.
Our brains get used to size relatively quick, whether going big or small. For me, when I want big, I hook my 14” M1 Pro into my external 27” monitor. When I travel (to the couch or elsewhere) I want the smaller form factor. It’s a perfect solution….for me. Regarding your FOMO, well you just need some therapy. Lol great vid!! 😎👍🏼
Thanks Jerry. I have the exact specs that you suggested in a 16inch. The main reason I go this size is the viewable screen size increase is mainly in HEIGHT which is really important in viewing documents especially is you want to look at a whole A4 page - or two side by side. It makes reviewing and reading documents much easier instead of needing to squint or only being able to see part of the page with the 14 inch.
Totally. I regularly look at multiple docs while I'm working - or while in Teams meetings. I started using an iMac at home, and then I was like, wait a minute? Why the heck am I trying to do my work on a 13" laptop? 🙄
In First Class, definitely. In Business Class, maybe. In standard coach, no way. Just wait until the SOB in front of you cranks back his seat to snore on a transatlantic and he shatters your 17 inch screen.
I was like "go for the 16" M1 Max and have your mind relaxed for what you may need" but I decided on the 16" M1 Pro 16Gb Ram. No issue for the moment other than the Montereys kernel memory leak which is now fixed in 12.2. I'm completely satisfied with my decision and I'm happy with it.
update 12.3.1 has no such memory leak issue. works as it should. I am experiencing some random Chrome crashes and some (very very few) laptop random shutdowns, but the last one extremely rare
I’ve always been perfectly happy with my 16 inch M1 Pro MBP with 32 Gb memory/ 1Tb storage. Yes, I’d have preferred 2 Tb storage but can’t justify the cost. Going from M1 Pro to M1 Max makes absolutely no sense for the purposes I currently use the MBP for. The beast I have is more than enough and will likely serve me well for 5 or 6 years, unless I develop a lust for some shiny new improvement that comes down from AAPL sooner.
You may like 16in but the size's pain slowly grows on you. I know I had the intel 16in MacBook it was unwieldy. You CAN carry it around but it's not something that you can easily do so
I bought the 14” m1-max with 64GB ram and 1 TB ssd…… a few days later I cancelled that for the same setup in 32GB instead of 64…… a few days later I canceled that and finally settled into the same specs in a 16”….. what a ride. Lol
@@JerrySchulze what finally settled me into the 16” was the size and space for cooling. From everything I’ve looked at it seems the 16” just runs cooler, and I’m not huge on the fans having to do a ton of work. At that point the extra $200 was a no brainer. And yea, I have orders and canceled orders all over my history there as well. Lol
I can see why you like it. I have 2nd guessed my choice of the 14" when it was revealed just how poorly cooled it is. But I didn't buy a MAX so it's not throttling, the fans don't "come on", and the thing is darn fast. I also want to be able to watch it on the plane and the 16" is too big for that. The battery life isn't all that great, but 90% of the time it's connected to an outlet anyway. So I'm loving the laptop but REALLY missing gaming a bit on bootcamp. They really need to get that Windows ARM license sorted out asap. Apple has already said it's no problem to do it.
I like larger screens too. I got the 16 inch M1 Max, 64 GB RAM, 2 TB. I love it. Do my Machine Learning in it, its waay better than my 2015 15 inch MBP!
Why you guys replace your Macs that often? Thats damn pricy! I am still on a 2010 15" midclass model, but since after multiple repairs, upgrades and 4 batteries (all DIY) a fan bearing is now making bad noises i ordered finally a 16" base model. And even i know... this Mac is probably the biggest overkill i ever did (for basic stuff and little bit photoshop editing), but there were no other viable options and i cant use windows on a productive machine, Windows is reserved for me for gaming, some astrophotography work (windows only software) and torrent/warez only.
@@quentondaniels8536 Ok for productivity reasons in this area, there is no question especially video stuff But nonetheless, the M1 Pro also performs AWESOME (at least what i have seen in reviews) Its coming in 2 days, i cant wait to see the difference it makes from my good old 2010 15" Model. Especially the screen interests me and i hope this mini-LED technology isnt a huge dealbraker for Astrophotography reasons (with the bloom around bright areas in the dark) I am more or less only importing and editing photos, mainly stacked astro data, therefor even a regular M1 Mac would be an overkill already but i need/want the better screen so i had to take the Pro model anyways (also, i dont wanted a smaller screen than i have with the 15" model)
Pretty happy then with my 16" 24core 32Gb 2TB. Would love to know why you would definitely choose silver though? This is the second time I've heard a passionate preference for silver without a reason and personally I find the space grey to be much sexier.
I got a Space Gray M1 MBA because it was on sale. In addition, the color looks great in pictures. However I would not get it again if I can choose not to. And I am saying this even as I like how the color looks in real life as well. The main reason is that dust, little crumbs etc visually pop on that color. I don't know why. I had a silver Retina MBP for 7 years and I didn't notice dust and crumbs so often or that severe. A reson for silver in the M1 Pro and M1 Max MacBook Pros is because the keyboard has a black background there is a nice visual contrast with the silver body.
To me, silver seems classic and real. And less like I'm an extra in a scene from Star Wars. But of course colors are mostly a matter of personal preference. 😊
I owned 2 Macs, 2009 15", 2010 15" (until today when i decided to switch to a 2021 16" MBP), both silver. They are not really dust magnets and dust isnt really visible on them. Still i ordered a grey MBP... i had only white/silver Apple stuff yet except for some iPods or so, and i DONT WANTED the contrast between the case and the keyboard since its all black now
@@hopedaddy907 I agree with you 100%. I am a space gray person and would never own a car that is white, even if it's my dream 911 car, either. It is ALL about "personal preference" and my personal preference is no better or worse than anyone else's. If someone likes silver or any color, that is their preference and life goes on.
@@JerrySchulze I thought the 16" was big and the 14 would be more my size, but one I had the 14" I realized it would be great for a mobile (like leave the house) computer. But since I don't really ever do that the 16 was a better fit to move around the house with.
I'm very happy with my decision to use the 14" MBP Max. I just turn the Low Power Mode on and leave it there, which still gives me all the power of the Max without the fans or heat. When I need the extra power for intensive work, it's there for me. When I need a bigger screen, my high spec 27" iMac is sitting on my desk, ready to chew through whatever task I throw at it. I'm glad to hear you made your decision on a MBP keeper though...it took me three cancelled orders to finally decide!
I got an M1 Pro 16-incher about 3 months ago (at a sizable discount) and just like my 2013 MBA, I can see this thing lasting me 10 years or so. I usually don't carry it around traveling, but just moving between kitchen and couch. If I have to go to the gym to do that then goddammit that's what I'll do!
I'm a DJ and just got a base model 16 inch MacBook Pro. I usually use it connected to my mixing console that has SSDs attached to it with all my music and have been used to using 512GB OS drives for many years so it ticked the boxes for me. I love the size so far! Moving over from a 13 inch MacBook Pro. I also absolutely love the keyboard, in fact, I think the new keyboards in this generation of laptops is my favourite part
I just recieved my 16" with m1 pro and 32gb RAM after my 2019 16" with core i9 and 32GB RAM literally died after two years of constant issues. Pretty sure it was just getting too hot to often, with medium workload. Thankfully Apple saw the long list of attempts to find what the problem was with the 2019 model, and they offered to replace my 2019 beast at no cost. And I could not be more satisfied with this new model. The screen is SO much better. The keyboard is a pleasure to use. And with some heavy use to put it through its paces and see how this Apple silicon performs, I'm not only impressed with the noticeable performance jump, but the battery life improvement was so obvious I would have even paid money for the upgrade. Then after already being blown away by the screen and performance jump, I couldn't believe that I hadn't heard to fans turn on at all. The i9 model was SO dissapointing becuase it was so obvious that processor was just not good for the smaller form factor. Then on top of it all is the improvement in build quality and better proportianed chassis. The squared off edges, additional ports, thin bezel, is well just spot on. Reminded me of that feeling of when I first touched my iphone 4. It feels sexy. It looks sexy. It feels like its worth the money, where my 2019 i9 almost made me start thinking of going back to PC since I didn't see the advantage of build quality of 2010-2015 type mbp's. Well done Apple. Im confident this will be a 10 year laptop like my 2012 was.
I am currently struggling if I should buy a MacBook Pro at all. My favorite is the the 14” base model. But also this performance I won’t need at all. We’ll see what will happen in March’s event…
I do mainly the same tasks that you do, and I've been contemplating which one to get. I had an M1 Macbook Air, which I loved, and was the best Windows laptop I had ever used. But the screen was too small. I loved the quiet, and I loved the portability. My previous laptop was a Dell Inspiron 17R, which weighs in at a hefty seven pounds or so. So I think the 16" will work just fine. My ideal configuration would be a Macbook Pro 16 with a Max chip (for future proofing) and 32 gig of RAM and 2 or 4 gigs of disk space. I do use Lightroom CC to process RAW images, so while speed is not imperative, a speed boost would be welcome. The Air that I had was 1.5 times faster than my current i5 PC desktop. Thanks for the review/comparison/explanation. Much appreciated.
Wow, this was a very detailed and realistic comparison which covered the points that most users actually care about. Most of us don't need the super performance of the M1 Max chip but definitely benefit a lot from the large screen, better speakers, better battery life and ability to connect more monitors.
MBP 14/16’s currently on sale at Best Buy, Amazon, Costco and others with huge discounts. Price difference between the two sizes now at only $200 with $350 off any configuration. Kept mine lower end, but my M1 iPad Air 256mb will soon have a 16” big brother!
Great review! I’ve had that 14 vs 16 debate for a while and I currently use a MBP M1 13. I love the thing so much but I realized that I can’t use this thing on its own at all. I’ve been connecting it to external monitors and keyboard and Magic Mouse to feel comfortable with it. The screen size is way to small to do anything productive on it. I elected to order my 16” M1 max 64gb 2TB back in dec 26 and I feel very good about the purchase now. My only regret is that I should have went for the 24 GPU core instead of the 32 Core but over all, can’t wait to get it next month!
@@Weird_Quests Essentially i don't use it for any film rendering or anything, all music production and the 24 core is sufficient for two external monitors and thats about it. but i'm happy with the 32core as well. althought it is very underused at the moment.
I am struggling with the choice. I had made up my mind to get the MBP M1 Max 64Bg 1TB when it first came out. It's physically barely any bigger than my current mid-2012 and I like big screens. I am not a gamer or a power user but my mid-2012 MBP has taught me that the more RAM I have, the more likely it will last as long as the current one has. However, in the UK, it's a 1 month delivery from order cycle. Also, I am wondering what the M2 chip will bring and, finally, my iPad Pro 9.7" 1st Gen is also reaching obsolescence because of its lack of RAM so I may have to update that. And I'm not made of money. I continue to procrastinate.
Solid points. The M2 may have faster cores but less of them and less GPU for sure. You are looking at a huge price diff between the M1 max 64 and an M2. If you don’t care about cost go for the M1 Max and there may not be a larger screen air coming.
Ah yes, Silver, please. You’re not a wimp for commenting about the weight; There’s a reason the 12” MacBook existed, and the MacBook Air still does. I, however, have had a 16” with M1 Max since the day after launch day (shopping delayed), and while I was initially in love, I now only use it twice a week. Its great hardware is let down by software, both Apple and third-party, that is so bad I just want to scream. For music production, the pro workflow for which I bought it, it is fine. Perfect, even. For gaming, the other thing I do, Steam for Mac is appalling right now, Apple Arcade isn’t as good on Mac as it should be, I can’t plug in an Xbox controller and use it wired. I can’t easily put games onto an external display… nothing is ever easy. Nothing ever works well enough to get out of my way. I can’t believe Apple is about to ship a VR headset when gaming on their platforms is sooo bad! And it’s not like they haven’t been trying! iPadOS 15 has the ability to navigate your home screen with a controller!
I got the 16’ MacBook Pro w/ M1 Pro chip and I totally had that FOMO feeling Jerry is talking about. It made me feel vulnerable to having a redundant product in the next couple of years. I returned it and got the 16’ MacBook Pro w/ M1 Max.
The question is now.... what are you doing with it? I also ordered the M1 Pro "only"... but since all i do is watching movies/series, web browsing and a little bit photoshop (with mainly astrophotography)... there is absolutely no way that i even use 10% of its capabilities. Ofc im a bit worried about the future because of the 16GB shared Ram, also a bit about the 512GB SSD only, but since i have my data anyways on external m.2 drives with TB/USB-C... i think i can get away with the cheapest 16" model (im planning anyways to abuse it as long and hard as possible as i did with my 2010 MacBook Pro until today...) I know - even the regular M1 is for 95% of the people overkill. The M1 Pro already for 98% at least, The Max for 99%+. Even when it comes to the content creators, rendering etc, there is barely any reason for "needs" of a M1 Max.
Same. Actually got lucky and was able to get a 16" m1 Max 32/32/1 TB for only $350 more than the price of a retail base model 16" M1 Pro for Black Friday and have no regrets.
Jerry, I went hog wild when the M1-Max hit the street and purchased the 16" with 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and no extra applications. I also purchased the LAST 16", Intel chip and find it nice but no real comparison with the M1-Max chip. The weight is not an issue with me, as I use both just about everywhere and like you, became accustomed to the size, weight and performance. I really appreciate the longer battery life with the Max vice the Intel processor. I get about 8 hours with the INTEL and over 15 hours with the MAX. like you said, pricy, but when you get the hardware that is custom designed with the OS, you have a winning pair and the lifespan of the MAC over any other PC on the market cannot be beat. I really enjoy my mac's and I just wish that Apple had kept the Touch Bar feature. The Intel model has it where the Max does not. That little "gee wiz" feature is a nice add on that I like, but can live without.
I understand what you mean. Sometimes we should just buy whatever makes us happy. I have purchased all of the colors ıf the leather case from Apple for the iPhone 13 Pro. Did I need 5 cases? No. Did I like all of the colors to the point where I will use all of them interchangeably depending on what I want to use for the occasion and time? Yes! Did Max Weinbach on Twitter purchase all of the colors of the Galaxy Z Flip? Yes!
That said, I wouldn't really feel bad if I purchased the 16-core M1 Pro 14". I know that the 32-core or even the 24-core M1 Max are not suitable for the 14" MacBook Proas it results in just non-ideal idle power draw and poor battery life on heavy workloads, and because of that I think the M1 Pro is the best chip that the 14" MBP can house. But I would face the same dilemma as you in deciding whether I should get the 14-core M1 Pro or 16-core M1 Pro, because I'd have a really hard time justifying the extra $100 for a 12.5% faster GPU (whereas I think the $200 extra to switch from the 8-core to 10-core CPU M1 Pro is justified because that is 2 whole extra CPU high performance cores, and for software like Parallels when it asks you how many cores you would lile to allocate for the OS emulation that helps a lot with your performance, whereas you don't really need to allocate GPU resources for that, it just does it automatically), but I still would justify the full-fat M1 Pro to myself considering the jump from the 14-core to 16-core GPU isn't hurting the battery as much as jumping from the M1 Pro to any model of the M1 Max, and considering how many years I will keep the machine for and how much I do want to still futureproof my performance.
I think most of us Mac guys went thru the same comparison. So, I bought both: MacBook Pro 14 base model for travel and a souped-up MacBook Pro 16 Max to replace my iMacPro (Intel). Couldn't be happier. Couldn't be more in debt.
I got a similarly spec'ed-out 16" MBP for one reason: Future-proofing. This thing replaced my 2009 13" base spec MBP, yes, you read that right, I used that sucker for 12 years, and I feel comfortable knowing it will last me a while without buyer's remorse setting in, thinking I'll need to upgrade again anytime soon. Yes, it's hella overkill for me now, but get back with me in 5-10 years...
I’m a big fan of the 16 inch myself after getting the 2019 version I’m ready to upgrade to the M1 16 inch it’s always better to have a computer that’s overkill & future proof for your workflow
I wonder how many people go for a 16” when they could be perfectly happy with a 14” but push the resolution/display scaling a bit higher than you are able to by default. Then you can have the space for apps side by side. I use RDM (Retina display menu) to do it.
Just ordered mine yesterday and I’m super pumped. It’s gonna be a music production machine mostly, but i wanted to be able to do video editing as well. 16” M1Max with 24 core gpu, 64GB RAM, 2TB SSD. Hopefully I’m future proofed. Now I just gotta wait 3 weeks and hope it doesn’t get delayed.
I had a hard time deciding between the 14" and 16", mainly because i wanted at least 1TB SSD since its not replacable/upgradable, but the 1TB version would be over budget on the 16". The "benefit" of the 14" could have been also that i probably like the smaller footprint and weight of the 14". But then there were these advantages: - bigger battery on 16", so longer battery usage - unbinned M1 Pro chip in 16" base model - I am used to my still running 2010 15" MBP, and since the 16" 2021 is the same size and still lighter i think the 16" is just fine to enjoy a proper screen. - resolution, im not really hi res addicted, but i wanted finally a proper "hi res" screen for photoshop and co! The biggest problems i hopefully dont encounter (otherwise i would be pretty mad at the MacBook...): The glowing areas around bright pixels, could be a huge problem in editing/stretching stacked astroimages. But on the other side... im still using a 12 year old TN Panel on my MacBook Pro 2010 for editing which is more or less.... BAD AF
@@JerrySchulze a C9 LG OLED is probably exactly the option to go for the Astrophotography editing if the Mini LED screen isnt ok for it But i guess it will just work fine since also my 2010 MBPs screen works just fine for ir
I use logic X and that is the main purpose of getting macbook for me. I like the idea of 14 inch for price and less looks in public, but 16 inch seems to be the one I really need as it will be my main computer. Downgrading in screen size from 27 inch imac 2013 to clear up space, will have to go look at these in person to really tell.
16'' is the boss... but about the performance... even my high specs M1 Max struggling sometimes... so I am thinking that is some 3rd party plugins (even optimized for M1) that causing that "lagging". Keep it up!
Which app? Final Cut Pro does have some issues. No reason at all it should have a delay building audio waveforms on the time line but I think that is a FCP issue/
Jerry, I recently purchased the 16" MBP (base model) Christmas return at Micro Center for about $311 off of list. I have very happy and have not looked back since. My old 13" (2014) MBP was an i5 with 16MB of Ram and a 256Gb SSD, so in reality, I doubled my SSD size, Got 3" more screen and the new MBP runs 4-5 times faster on most work. I am very happy.
I’ve bought a device with too small a screen a few times too. Like laptops and apple watches. The smaller more portable size makes sense in the moment when I’m buying it. But i always regret it later. The only device that I like a little smaller is an iPhone because i have to carry it everywhere in my pocket. It’s the one time I’m not jealous of a larger screen because you can’t do more with it.
With only 5% increase in price from Pro to Max in a 16” 32 GB package is it future proofing or just foolish to get the Max.? We have no 4K video in our workflow and that $200 is half way to a fast external SSD solution.
Sounds good to me. If I had the money for a new computer and had to choose between those two, I would definitely go for a 16 inch model for a single reason. The reason you mentioned months ago as a plus for it. The lower temperatures.
The way I see it, everybody has different needs and preferences. Hearing all these competing opinions trying to convince us which way is best can be daunting for people... Pick one - stick with it. Nothing else and nobody else’s opinion matters. There’s a reason why the two options exist, coz we’re not all the same!
If I wasn’t moving as much as i do I would’ve choose the 14” cause it would stay in the dock connected to a monitor and bluetooth mouse and keyboard. It is crucial to have more space in arrangement view. I am struggling right now having only 13” air without external monitor. 16” best all around for my conditions
Great video. This was also a pretty touch choice. I currently own a M1 macbook air and a intel 15' macbook pro for work. I also have a razer 14 for gaming. Based on my usage model - when I am at home, I am using monitors (less dependency on screens). While I'm traveling, I'm carrying 2-3 laptops plus extras (one Mac and one PC for minimum). This is why i have been leaning towards the 14 replace both the 15' and M1 macbook air. I haven't seen measured the dimensions to see how the 16 would fit. In my current backpacks, They were designed for macbook 15 inch. I would agree that having a 16inch is amazing, but there are times when I truly appreciated the m1 air for it's size.
I went with the M1 pro max 24 The dark horse so glad I did…… especially for music production… could I get away with a M1 air …. That my wife has yes…. But my 16” max it’s so much smoother and faster…. Love the extra screen real estate….
Nice. I did the same, and similarly for music production. I had a gold MBA M1 (16GB ram, 1TB) for about 4 weeks of daily use, before sending it back. It's a great machine, both design-wise and performance. However, that 13.3" after more than 10 years using 15.4" or at least 22" external widescreen monitors .... NO, you don't "get used to it", as a few users of MBA M1 have promoted. It's still another 3 weeks wait for my MBP, ordered in January, but implementing a 100% mobile set-up (whenever necessary) is the objective. For those reasons, including those you mentioned, my choice is well justified.
I replaced my Mac mini (dual monitors) and my windows laptop with additional monitor, with MacBook Max, still running 3 monitors and Parallels in coherence mode for the few windows apps I still need. So the 3 monitors required the Max processor and I went with the 16” as the windows laptop was a 17” and I didn’t want to compromise too much. Can have Xcode and a few simulators open on two screens, backend services apps for azure on the other and still have outlook or support tools on the MacBook screen. Couldn’t be more pleased, fits my workflow perfectly…
Thanks for this video man. I can't even tell you how many YT videos I've watched about the new MBP's and this answered the question I was wondering about: "If I get the 14", will I regret it and realize I really did want the 16" all along even though it will be a bit heavier. So thanks for making the buying mistake for us lol. 16" MBP on the way!!
I've been struggling with this decision for the past month or so. After watching about many hours worth of UA-cam reviews and trying both of them out for a couple weeks, I'm starting to lean towards the 16 inch. Screen size being the main reason why. I noticed the 14 inch is like you said "whelming" when it comes to screen real estate.
I've always had two Mac , a desktop and a MacBook Pro , and my older MacBook Pro from 2017 was starting to feel sluggish , and same for my iMac with intel. , so I've tried every machine from Apple , at first it was the mini M2 pro , then I switched to a Mac Studio M1 Max, then when the M2 max version was released like 2 months ago I've tried it , and I thought this would be the replacement for my iMac , but then I thought why not buy a MacBook Pro M2 max who can do both , using it as a desktop 90% of the time, and as a laptop for the 10% left , and I'm glad I made this choice , otherwise I would have kept the M2 max Studio for all the ports and cooling , but even if Apple let the M2 max heats up a bit more without the fan spinning ( they start spinning a little when most CPU's are above 100 degrees ( celsius ) . but it not an issue with TG Pro I can push the fan to the max when I encode dozens of video . this things screams . I would have loved it to have an extra thunderbolt 4 port tbh , but I'm happy that magsafe is back , and I love the space gray color ( I wish I could order a midnight color one like the MacBook Air ) personally I was tired a bit of silver for the MacBook Pro ...
My issue with the 14" is that the viewing angles are so narrow, you have to sit perfectly still infront of the display and you can't move your head a bit (not to the sides, not up, not down) or you'll experience colour and contrast shift. It might be minute but it's enough to make me feel dizzy and almost sick. So working with the 14" is not possible at all. I'd have to see whether the 16" is any better in that regard but I'm not too hopeful.
@@JerrySchulze it reminded me of how the first UHD IPS panels looked like, almost as if someone forgot to install another diffusion layer. In large format photography you get a similar effect when you use a groundglass without a Fresnel lens
new M1 MacBook Pros - "16" and 14" tonight. The body is squared off and thicker than my 2019 MBP. WHAT??? And it feels cheap, not like the former Airplane Grade aluminum. You knock on it and it feels hollow-ish. And the bottom feet are harder than previous models, almost like a cell phone case that is hard plastic and sort of hits the desk too hard. I am pretty disappointed. Why, Apple, Why?
The 16 inch definitely seems like a great option, but as a student, it is simply impossible to make it work on the tiny desks i’ll be using in the lecture halls. If it wasn’t for that, I would’ve definitely gone 16 inch, and honestly would’ve probably even used it as a complete desktop replacement.
Many thanks again Jerry. This does clear up a lot of issues regarding what I would like to replace (or work alongside) my current iMac 27 inch 2013 (She may be old but she is still a workhorse for me). Thanks to your insight I now know I will go 16 inch (Pro). I think After Effects will work just fine on that for me :-) 👍🏼
Funny, your videos helped me decide to get the 16” first time. Where did you sell your 14”? Did you trade it in to Apple? I’m thinking of selling my 16” max to buy a new iMac later this year.
14 inch is the real deal for carrying it in your rucksack on the bike, M1 pro 16 GB is fast enough for what I am working on (100+ tabs open in vivaldi, database researches in DT3) quiet and has got long battery life. Missing screen size only counts away from home office, where two Eizos do the job. And it is way cheaper, lets you buy 2TB and a HHKB Keyboard on top.

My struggle is I change computers all the time. I would love 4 or 8 tb but I can’t afford that in every computer.
Inspiring. Ordered one recently. Waiting. I hope I won't be disappointed
Bigger is always better !!!
Exact same issue. I returned the 14 inch because I start to use the 16 in my bed, the couch, the dinning table. And then I don’t want the 14
I went with the 16” too.
Thanks so much for checking them out!
Exactly the same as you and I absolutely love the setup
Same here. returned it and bought m1 max 64GB 1TB in silver.
I love it.
I love my m1 max I came from an outdated Acer laptop and now ive got to experience first hand the evolution of laptops through the years!
Lol glad I am not the only crazy one.
You should take every UA-cam review with a grain of salt. It’s all about making money with clicks.
Very exciting times. I ordered a 16 inch M1Max 32 Ram 1 TB storage and I can’t wait to get it! The wait is so long!
I know that I am crazy but glad there are others out there!
when you use your ipad as an external display when you travel (or universal control) In my case I had no need for a bigger screen.
I absolutely love my M1 pro MacBook Pro 16 inch. You have to get what works for you and not what the influencers say would be best for you 😃
Good thing I have zero influence! lol
@@JerrySchulze lol
I prefer larger screens. I loved the 17-inch Macbook Pro of past years.
The weight is not a problem. It is only 1 pound more than the smaller Macbook.
Exactly what I’m waiting on, 16”, 32gb ram, 32 core with 2 TB storage in Silver.
Waiting times are just crazy with Apple at the moment.
I ordered M1 Max 16 inch, 64GB,4TB: on 14 Dec. And it is going to be delivered on 11Feb. Finaly 2 month of wait coming to end. 🙂.
@@premierde enjoy it mate. It’ll be worth the wait from what I’m hearing.
Yep, I do!
When I travel I prefer an iPad, especially on the couch
Thanks Jerry. I have the exact specs that you suggested in a 16inch. The main reason I go this size is the viewable screen size increase is mainly in HEIGHT which is really important in viewing documents especially is you want to look at a whole A4 page - or two side by side. It makes reviewing and reading documents much easier instead of needing to squint or only being able to see part of the page with the 14 inch.
Good point.
Totally. I regularly look at multiple docs while I'm working - or while in Teams meetings. I started using an iMac at home, and then I was like, wait a minute? Why the heck am I trying to do my work on a 13" laptop? 🙄
Thank you so much! For this video! Now i know what size i need!

The 16 inch fits on an airline tray. The past 17- inch Macbook Pro fit easily.

I bought the 14” m1-max with 64GB ram and 1 TB ssd…… a few days later I cancelled that for the same setup in 32GB instead of 64…… a few days later I canceled that and finally settled into the same specs in a 16”….. what a ride. Lol
Oh, and I did get it in silver. Had the grey previously (a mid 17 15” model), and felt like silver was the play this time.
Lol!!!! I did pretty much the same thing. My apple order history page is riddled with cancelled orders.
Lol
we have the same choice. no regrets at all. 16 inch m1 max is great to use
I like the philosophical approach to tech of you!

To be fair it should be way faster. There is a 6 years difference between your old and new one. Good choice mate.

Pretty happy then with my 16" 24core 32Gb 2TB. Would love to know why you would definitely choose silver though? This is the second time I've heard a passionate preference for silver without a reason and personally I find the space grey to be much sexier.
I agree and my preference has always been space grey since it came out.
I just went back to the 16" after going through the 14" a few Mac Minis, and a couple PC permutations.
Hi Jason! Anything in particular you went for the 16 over the 14?
@@JerrySchulze I thought the 16" was big and the 14 would be more my size, but one I had the 14" I realized it would be great for a mobile (like leave the house) computer. But since I don't really ever do that the 16 was a better fit to move around the house with.
Ya, I think that is a big part of it. I probably wouldn't take this to coffee shops, or whatever the kids do with laptops these days.
i've been a 15/16 inch user all my life.. i have never ever wanted something else...
Same here! i have an ipad pro 12.9 1TB 16GB as a more mobile solution.
I placed at least 3 other orders that I cancelled. lol
I got an M1 Pro 16-incher about 3 months ago (at a sizable discount) and just like my 2013 MBA, I can see this thing lasting me 10 years or so. I usually don't carry it around traveling, but just moving between kitchen and couch. If I have to go to the gym to do that then goddammit that's what I'll do!
lol
OMG that is SO AWESOME!
Good review, and the explanation about rationale was cool! It clears the confusion on whether to go for the 14” or 16”.
Awesome, I am happy I ordered Macbook Pro 16 with M1 MAX.
I agree, writing this from the couch, on my 16" M1 Max👍
The wait is the hardest part!
What made you want to get the 24 core and not the 32 core?
What made you want to get the 24 core and not the 32 core?
@@Weird_Quests Essentially i don't use it for any film rendering or anything, all music production and the 24 core is sufficient for two external monitors and thats about it. but i'm happy with the 32core as well. althought it is very underused at the moment.
I have the 16 with 1TB and works perfect. Sold my 14 to get the 16.
I bought the same spec for the same reasons. I don’t regret it.
15"-16" size is the best size. 14" - 13" too small. Need to make them not get hot
Its rough being us.
The question is now.... what are you doing with it?
I also ordered the M1 Pro "only"... but since all i do is watching movies/series, web browsing and a little bit photoshop (with mainly astrophotography)... there is absolutely no way that i even use 10% of its capabilities.
Ofc im a bit worried about the future because of the 16GB shared Ram, also a bit about the 512GB SSD only, but since i have my data anyways on external m.2 drives with TB/USB-C... i think i can get away with the cheapest 16" model (im planning anyways to abuse it as long and hard as possible as i did with my 2010 MacBook Pro until today...)
I know - even the regular M1 is for 95% of the people overkill.
Great video Jerry! I have the M1 Pro and I love it! Didn't need the extra power in the Max. Apple gave me almost $1500 for my 2019 16" as a trade.
Oh nice!
Jerry,
I went hog wild when the M1-Max hit the street and purchased the 16" with 64GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and no extra applications.
For me the real problem between 14 inch and 16 is, I can't afford both. :D
100% this!!!!
Couldn't be more in debt.
lol 😂
I got a similarly spec'ed-out 16" MBP for one reason: Future-proofing. This thing replaced my 2009 13" base spec MBP, yes, you read that right, I used that sucker for 12 years, and I feel comfortable knowing it will last me a while without buyer's remorse setting in, thinking I'll need to upgrade again anytime soon. Yes, it's hella overkill for me now, but get back with me in 5-10 years...
Also, I'm thinking of getting into video editing for my job, so there's that, too...
That’s awesome!
Not that many. Very happy with the 16”
1 reason: Battery life
Just ordered mine yesterday and I’m super pumped.
But then there were these advantages:
- bigger battery on 16", so longer battery usage
- unbinned M1 Pro chip in 16" base model
- I am used to my still running 2010 15" MBP, and since the 16" 2021 is the same size and still lighter i think the 16" is just fine to enjoy a proper screen.
BAD AF
Yes, its not oled but it is great. Maybe look at an OLED tv for a second reference display
@@JerrySchulze a C9 LG OLED is probably exactly the option to go for the Astrophotography editing if the Mini LED screen isnt ok for it
But i guess it will just work fine since also my 2010 MBPs screen works just fine for ir
I use logic X and that is the main purpose of getting macbook for me. I like the idea of 14 inch for price and less looks in public, but 16 inch seems to be the one I really need as it will be my main computer. Downgrading in screen size from 27 inch imac 2013 to clear up space, will have to go look at these in person to really tell.
that one hand carry flex tho 💪🏽
Finally, a new upload 😍
Sorry 😞 been super busy at work and home.
I am a designer who travels a lot, so the 16" does wonders for me!
@@JerrySchulze Yes, Jerry about FCP... M1 Max it's a beast but like you said... it has some issues.
My M1 Pro doesn't get hot at all. I still haven't heard the fans run.
Awesome!
I am waiting for the M2. I don't need it but I want more power.
There’s a reason why the two options exist, coz we’re not all the same!
but I want BOTH!
@@JerrySchulze Same here 😅. I’m on the market for one, but can only afford the smaller one tbh.
Dark horse indeed. rare!
Sitting on the fence until a M2 Macbook is out... the 16" is just not portable. Ideally a 15" M2 Macbook would be the sweet spot.
I can totally understand feeling bothered by something else out there is faster. I can’t go with good enough.
I ordered 1st December and still waiting for mine to show up!
I've been struggling with this decision for the past month or so. After watching about many hours worth of UA-cam reviews and trying both of them out for a couple weeks, I'm starting to lean towards the 16 inch. Screen size being the main reason why. I noticed the 14 inch is like you said "whelming" when it comes to screen real estate.
lol
Very helpful , thanks for posting , subscribed .
Great Job mate! Love the content
Thanks a ton!
Bigger 9 times out of 10 adds versatility , be it smartphone, laptop , or cars , big all the way.
Interesting. I don’t experience this.
@@JerrySchulze it reminded me of how the first UHD IPS panels looked like, almost as if someone forgot to install another diffusion layer. In large format photography you get a similar effect when you use a groundglass without a Fresnel lens
the size is everything, that is just right. after spend few days with the 16inch, the 15.6inch even is too small for my eye.
new M1 MacBook Pros - "16" and 14" tonight.
Oh, no one here has mentioned lecture hall desks. Great point!
The 14s were returned but I have had good luck selling computers on Facebook marketplace. I don’t use facebook for anything else.
This is what I was leaning towards -- just wondered, have you had any issues with heating?
What you want is the 16 Inch M2 MacBook Air with 32 GB of RAM. The M1 Pro is overkill for me too but I wanted 32 GB RAM and the 16 inch screen.
