Mike Watt was the bass player in a band called the minutemen in the early 80's then started a band called firehose in early 90'late80's he also has toured with bands like the stooges (iggy pop) he's one of the most respected bass players ever and deservingly so!
I saw this show in NYC that summer. The Foo Fighters' first record hadn't even come out yet. Kurt Loder from MTV was outside trying to scalp a ticket. It became this super-hot ticket in NYC once word got out Vedder & Grohl were playing w/Watt. I think the Beasties did a tune also and that burnout Evan Dando.
Awesome video! I watch a lot of concert vids and this is one of the best. My kudos to the camera crew and editor. Excellent stuff. Watt rocks, whoever he is playing with. Can't wait until he gets back from Japan.
Ya gotta love Watt. Saw him open for the Chili Peppers and Flaming Lips in '04. He walks out on stage, starts tuning his bass. The crowd doesn't even acknowledge him. Then he starts just CRANKING on it. They must've thought, "Goddamn, that roadie can play"
Amazing tour. Pat Smear, Mr.'s Goldsmith and Mendel. What a tribute to Uncle Watt. Minutemen, fIREHOSE, and solo, tremendous body of work. Stooges too!
Wlliam goldsmith was a great drummer. He just played differently. I am obviously a giant fan of grohl's drumming but shit you can't expect William to be exactly like Grohl in playing. William Goldsmith and Nate Mendel has been two of my fav bands Sunny Day Real Estate and Foo Fighters. It is cool look back at the early days of the foo. Mike watt kicks ass. I got to meet him at warped tour. This line up is a trip. Will someone ever download Big Train on Jon Stewart again?
It still amazes me, I saw this tour in Lawrence. Watt was himself. Grohl was very available, friendly and funny, Vedder hid behind amps, wigs and a hoodie. E.V. was polite and nodded acknowledgement.
It was basically a who's who of 90s alternative music. Sexual Military Dynamics w/Henry Rollins-freakin BADASS. J Mascis lays down 12 Mins of SCORCHIN guitar on Maggot Brain. With a sort of Jazz fusion vibe throughout the whole record, it was one of the most innovative efforts of the 90s.
seemingly every musician ever collaborated on that mike watt album. eddie vedder, the beastie boys, sonic youth, nirvana, bernie worrell, flea, etc etc etc
Hey Justin, I've tried quite some time to find this song, could you or someone else please tell me the name of the album this song was taken from. Many thanks
Dave, Taylor, John Bonham, and many other "big" drummers play French grip (thumbs up), too. William was way too stiff with holding his sticks and using his wrists, though. If you watch the video of him and Dave playing with David Bowie in 1997, you'll see how stiff he keeps his wrists while Dave, playing the same part, doesn't. William otherwise is a great drummer and I'm pretty sure he fixed his technique, since he still drums with the Fire Theft.
For all of you who desperately searched for a tab for this song, you can find it here: giventowail. com/tab/pearl-jam/live-1990s/chinese-firedrill . The song is as much fun to play on guitar as it is to listen to it ;)
+HALRU2 , 1995 at the Metro, I believe. In Chicago: consequenceofsound.net/2015/03/video-vault-mike-watt-foo-fighters-and-eddie-vedder-give-chicago-a-once-in-a-life-performance/
nas555: remember what the minutemen's d.boon used to say: "punk rock is whatever we want it to be." for the record...i'll take watt's voice over vedder's any day. less phoney.
The albums were all Dave, except two tracks on TC&TS. Speed isn't everything by the way: power, precision and technique are all. Dave has all of those in bucketfuls. Will didn't have nearly enough of them. Why do you think he went down with carpal tunnel syndrome?
Pearl Jam had blown up by the time these guys toured together and clueless idiots showed up expecting PJ songs or getting to hang with Eddie and Dave. Eddie's just trying to play without drawing attention away from Mike's music.
Sorry, but as far as I'm concerned, Will ruined most live performances by the Foos. Dave hits even harder than Will, and did it for longer than Will, and Dave hasn't gone down with CTS.
He ruined his wrists by playing badly. He had no technique. Dave banged the skins longer and harder - apparently he still plays drums in private every day - but he had the necessary technique and so has never had CTS, or even RSI.
I find Dave hits a lot harder in most cases, but I haven't exactly studied Goldsmith a lot. But I'm pretty sure he got his carpal tunnel syndrome because he plays with his hands side ways. Not good for your wrists. You shooouuuld be playing with your palms facing down.
wow, Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder together on stage. Two of my musical heroes! And Mike Watt too! He's so cool. Thank you for sharing this clip(:
dave is just soooooooo sweet x
Three legends!.... props to MR WATT
This show is still the best show I was ever at.
Mike Watt was the bass player in a band called the minutemen in the early 80's then started a band called firehose in early 90'late80's he also has toured with bands like the stooges (iggy pop) he's one of the most respected bass players ever and deservingly so!
this is ridiculous!! Thank you! This is truly one from the vault.......Unbelievable...treasure
Watt-Vedder-Grohl = Perfect combination.
Wow. This belongs in a museum or something.
Wow! I never thought I'd get to see clips from this tour. Thank you!
I watched this several times last night and went to sleep humming it.
It's awersome!
Saw this show at the metro in Chicago!

Watt , your the man
I loved Frank Blacks version of this !!
Love this version
God bless the man or woman that recorded this
Why didn't he sing it on the album, and at this tempo? This is perfect.
great album
Awesome video! I watch a lot of concert vids and this is one of the best. My kudos to the camera crew and editor. Excellent stuff.
Watt rocks, whoever he is playing with. Can't wait until he gets back from Japan.
king of bass!
Cheers, hell of a lineup, not saying its a replacement for the Minutemen but all great musicians
That T-bird sounds awesome!
Mike's playing at a bar a few blocks from my place tomorrow night. After hearing this, I think I'll have to go see him.
this is beautiful. watt is the man. no wonder blood sugar sex magic is dedicated to him.
If you are a Peppers fan and don't know who Watt is, then stop listening music. The BSSM album is dedicated to Mike Watt!
Amazing tour. Pat Smear, Mr.'s Goldsmith and Mendel. What a tribute to Uncle Watt. Minutemen, fIREHOSE, and solo, tremendous body of work. Stooges too!
Amen..and Amen
@JacobWeinberg Watt's a 'goofy face factory' during gigs. A riot to watch.
For the record, the jam at the end is "Forever," the prelude to Watt's cover of "One Reporter's Opinion" on the Ball-Hog or Tug Boat? album.
Respect to the Watt. x
Wlliam goldsmith was a great drummer. He just played differently. I am obviously a giant fan of grohl's drumming but shit you can't expect William to be exactly like Grohl in playing. Its on ball hog or tugboat. great album tons of amazing duets
@LeotheOrangeCat i saw this tour at tramps NYC. foo fighters opened for them and it was after nirvana dissolved...
It still amazes me, I saw this tour in Lawrence. Watt was himself. Grohl was very available, friendly and funny, Vedder hid behind amps, wigs and a hoodie. E.V. was polite and nodded acknowledgement.

After watching those guys play Chinese Fire Drill, I just wanna learn the song!
@RIPdBOON It is chinese firedrill, its on itunes. Just search ball hog or tugboat then look on the album.
aaooohh yeah nothing left to sayyy....great i sayyy
let you not forget Mike Watt now!
I read (maybe in this thread) that this is the first thing that Ghrol did after Nirvana. I wonder if Watt was able to share perspective with him.
dave grohl is the one!
i wanna hear more bout mike's cat.
Frank Black from the Pixies sings it on the album
That rocked... and yeah I agree with jarfe, nas5555 really needs to get an education
Will was fantastic on the first Sunny Day Real Estate record. He just ruined his wrists from hitting the skins so hard.
i never thought something like this exist.thx i try to get it.but how any one help.....
Frank Black ..was singer on this song ..original
wow, this has do be really old, or am i wrong?

Does anyone have a valid link for this clip?

Does anyone know the lyrics to this great song?
A reverse-body Thunderbird! They're rare as fuck...
excuse my ignorance...But what is the first song called and what albums its from?
what was the first song they played called?
Hey Justin, I've tried quite some time to find this song, could you or someone else please tell me the name of the album this song was taken from. Many thanks
fuck me this is awesome. I've said it before & I'll say it again. Watt you're my inspiration.
Dave, Taylor, John Bonham, and many other "big" drummers play French grip (thumbs up), too. William was way too stiff with holding his sticks and using his wrists, though. @nobody36 It died :(
What is the name of this song? Chinese fire drill? cant find it anywhere...
What's the song at 7:30? the third one?
you're right, dude! the song is bit faster on the record btw
Isnt William Goldsmith on Drums?
For all of you who desperately searched for a tab for this song, you can find it here: giventowail. com/tab/pearl-jam/live-1990s/chinese-firedrill . The song is as much fun to play on guitar as it is to listen to it ;)
What's the name of the second song?
The second one if "Piss-Bottle Man."
PLEASE...What show date was this? Saw them early nineties at St. Mark's Place
HALRU2 I don't know
+HALRU2 , 1995 at the Metro, I believe. In Chicago: consequenceofsound.net/2015/03/video-vault-mike-watt-foo-fighters-and-eddie-vedder-give-chicago-a-once-in-a-life-performance/
dave is a great musisian...you should know more about dave to judge him...but as somebody previously said its a personal opinion
is that William Goldsmith on drums?
Wattvused a variant of this baseline on the porno for pyros (good gods urge) album
Wait.. Isn't that Will Goldsmith om drums there? O_O
What is the name of this song?
when was this??
nas555:
remember what the minutemen's d.boon used to say: "punk rock is whatever we want it to be."
for the record...i'll take watt's voice over vedder's any day. less phoney.

trollgoal Chinese firedrill and piss bottle man

@TheMasterOfReality55 ran outta lives huh?
Too bad the spiel about how cats percieve the world got cut off. I'd like to talk to watt about any subject.
DEL PUTAS!!!
Actually the name of the song is "Chinese Fire Drill", but I do agree, it's great
Eddie looks like he really doesn't wanna be there lol
Pearl Jam had blown up by the time these guys toured together and clueless idiots showed up expecting PJ songs or getting to hang with Eddie and Dave. Eddie's just trying to play without drawing attention away from Mike's music.
Why this pointless argument? You aren't going to change eachother's mind, so just enjoy the muzak.
I swear that's the same guy that was squealing to piss bottle man in the same show. I don't think that's eddie.
i'm afraid these days there is no such thing as original.
Actually a couple of pieces of

For once, Will Goldsmith doesn't sound like the most crappy drummer in the universe...
I gave the reason 'its all about personal preference', in other words, personally Dave Grohl doesn't appeal to me.
I find Dave hits a lot harder in most cases, but I haven't exactly studied Goldsmith a lot. But I'm pretty sure he got his carpal tunnel syndrome because he plays with his hands side ways. Not good for your wrists. You shooouuuld be playing with your palms facing down.
MIKE WATT SO MUCH BETTER THAN VEDDER
Eddie Vedder is gay. Watt rules. Grohl kicks. Awesome.
nordicknut more like grohl is gay, Eddie rules and watt kicks
