Talk about a super group.
The album this song's on also has appearances from Henry Rollins, J Mascis, Frank Black, Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl; I'm not kidding. I left more than a few names out but you can read the list here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball-Hog_or_Tugboat%3F
Yeah, the entire album is completely chock-full of some of the best rock / alternative musicians still alive at the time
I always thought of Pat as a rock your face off, power chord, loud as all hell, rythym guitarist. I had no idea he was so filthy with the slide.
Yes!! I had no idea!! It’s fantastic!!
Can we just take a moment to appreciate Pat's fucking playing?!
Absolutely!!
His playing is rudimentary.
@@elmoblatch9787 sounds great doesn’t it!!
@@ianjarrold6423 it’s fucking cool
i guess Im asking randomly but does someone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow forgot the account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me!
Pat Smear rocks!
Think about how much Mike Watt is respected that Eddie Vedder played rhythm guitar for him
EV said he had shit constantly thrown at him and was called a sellout on that Watt/Vedder/Grohl tour. One night he starting throwing stuff back at the audience and was like, "Fuck off! Mike Watt is MY fucking hero too!" audience
D. Boon
And Dave Grohl in Drums
Pat Smear completely rocks. that was incredible all around.
Seeing this performance "live" on TV in 1995 made me fall in love with my bass guitar. Mike Watt is one of the greatest men to ever grace the Thud Staff. In this performance he is surrounded by superstars, yet he still shines through.
mike watt doesnt really play the bass as much as he attacks it and strangles it until it makes amazing sounds out of fear
No, he just plays it ffs
@@cleftturnip7774 sorry darlin
I usually disagree with this kind of fanciful description, but he does break a bass string, which you don't see too often.
I saw this tour with this line-up headlining. Foo fighters opened up, Mississippi Nights in St Louis, I was not much of a Pearl Jam fan back then but after this show I had respect for Eddie Vedder. He played rhythm guitar and sang backups like a champ and never tried to steal the spotlight.
Not true frontman. Like take a look of Ronnie James Dio, on of the best frontmans ever and he sung over solos too :D
@@TJS3 Eddie Vedder is a way more tasteful singer than Dio.
@@elmoblatch9787 It was a joke and I think they are really different acts, both good in their own way.
He also played drums in the opening band Hovercraft of you remember. Seen them om this tour in Philadelphia
@@gotham4434 Wow, I didnt remember that until you mentioned it. Cheers!
As much as I like the Foos I've got to admit that Dave Grohl's place is right behind the drumset
He's a great drummer. I saw him a few times, playing drums for Scream in small clubs between 1988-90.
Miquel no one smashes drums like Grohl....
Niuean Honey SMASHES
Punk Rick's Videos His stint with Scream was their best..
Yah, Grohl was an awesome drummer. I felt like he felt like he had something to prove after Nirvana and that he could be a front-man. Really a shame because he is such an awesome drummer and arguably the best drummer from the grunge-90's era. Personally I'm not much of a Foo Fighters fan; just not much riveting about them.
Seen Mike 3-4 times in the 80's. Madame Wongs West, Al's Bar & Pershing Square concert with the Minutemen... God bless D. Boon!
Saw Mike Watt @ the 40 Watt in Athens, GA around this time. Lights went low, lights came up, & Eddie Vedder was a surprise guest! Cost me $3 cover that night. Amazing!!
Sidney Vandiver That's awesome man! I actually used to work at the 40 watt about ten years ago as a doorguy, got to see many a great show there. Probably still my favorite venue to see live music.
Dave playing drums brings a song to life. Pat surprised me with the slide work though! Very impressive.
Pat Smear! My guitar Jesus!
As a huge Foos and PJ fan I must say this is friggin sweet. Mike Watt is an animal!
Quite simply... That just KILLS! Never was PJ fan, BUT last summer. Eddie Vedder headlined the Ohana Fest at Doheny State Beach in SoCal. He killed it! Plus it was cool that he had lived in the area long ago and is a surfer, He told some hilarious stories about how they'd go to a hardware store and buy all the shit needed to make a home made surfboard leash. With rope and old fashioned rubber bungee cord. He was a 100% honest in his performance and he played his heart out his whole set, Fantastic. Always thought he was cool dude, but LIVE solo. Eddie Vedder kicks ass. Just him, a stool and acoustic and electric. Even a
ukulele. Lucky... the sound outside at the beach was perfect. Killer show!!! with Mudhoney and Elvis Costello and X.
Pat Smear on slide guitar is just so fucking badass to me!
Reading over some of these comments, I think it's fair to say most folks may not know who Mike Watt is, but those who do can consider themselves in the cool crowd. This guy's a freaking juggernaut on the bass and he's highly respected by those who know their shit. And incidentally, Ballhog or Tugboat? was one of the best albums of '95. Just because few people bothered picking it up doesn't make it any less true.
Broke a bass string and didn't miss a note. Watt and The Missing Men are coming to my town in October. Saw Watt in J Mascis and the Fog in 2001. They played a bunch of Stooges and Black Flag covers.
Watt no one like him. What a trip were lucky to have crossed paths.☮️
The absolute DGAF attitude of taking one of the most gifted vocalists of the century and putting him on the guitar with a backup vocal roll is awesome
Underrated song
'The kids of today should defend themselves against the seventieeeeees...'
On the outro song to this episode, they played a song with Grohl on lead guitar - The "HOLY SHIT" look on Eddie Vedder's face was priceless. Lmao!!
Mike Watt is a beast on bass and his vocals/lyrics are inspiring. If you don't know anything about The Minutemen (Watt's former band, RIP D BOON), you should. Had it not been for D Boon's tragic death this group would have be extremely popular.
You know what else? The van's axle flew off when Linda hit a pothole, that's what cause the van to fly off the road and D. to be ejected out the rear of the van.
Rip d boon
Contemplating the Engine Room - 1997. Go buy it and give it a listen. Mike Watt masterpiece.
Absolutely fantastic
Came to Philly and ended his show shouting out "John Coltrane!" Loved him from Minutemen to Firehose to...Watt!
Just listen to the power in those grooves. Damn boys
This song was included in a free CD that came with a Rolling Stone magazine I had bought that same year :-))
I didnt realize how big of a fucking treat this would be....my god that was rocking. In other words pure punk rock
I was in the studio audience for this...it was sick...Watt busts a string and still destroyed...I don't know who these other cats are, but Watt is just the bees knees... :)
i wish i could hug you
Graduated high school and saw Mike Watt at Lollapalooza that year. Those were the days.
I'm a much bigger fan of Grohl as a drummer than as guitarrist/vocalist!
I can't believe I'm just now seeing this. Amazing.
dave makes the simplest parts sound so huge
pat smear is beast at slide guitar!!
This is so cool. Thanks for sharing. The best band! Pat's gotten really good since punk rock days w/the Germs. Seen all these musicians live but never together like this. Remember watching this on tv when it aired. Still go back to this performance to listen n watch.
too many fucking legends on one stage!!!
Big stars like Eddie Veder and Dave Grohl have thier punk rock heroes like Mike Watt and Bob Mould. You kids may not know these people but us old punks do.
Not to mention Pat fucking Smear of the Germs.
Thats 100% correct my friend.Plus jon stewart grew up a punk rocker,as im sure you know, but these little kids no nothing. We need a rock revolution in 2018
Will7311 S I'm only twenty one and constantly jam Black Flag, The Germs, Sex Pistols, Clash, The Damned, The Exploited, and many others. The information is there. Whether young or old, we're all here because the music means something to us.
@Jacob...Who the fuck is Mike Watt? He's not the best singer, but his punk roots and base playing are legendary. Don't disrespect the man like that. This album was amazing, and Eddie sang lead in some of the songs.
@Jacob Maldonado That's a bad take Jacob.
the 90's...
Who’s here ridin the big train in 2021?
I don’t know how I got here , but I’m never coming back , this is crap
one of the best bass players
3:31 Vedder's look so good. Like "what a weirdo" to Mike Watt xD . Kickass song. Pure Rock n Roll.
he looked so arrogant and petty but i know he's a good person and totally humble
Thanks for posting this! I bought that album when it came out and caught the show in Philly, with Foo Fighters opening. Great show and since the album featured so many other musicians that toured with Mike, it was one surprise after another.
Same! I wish I could remember it all. I mostly remember people getting in Vedder’s face and giving him the finger on stage and a dual between Grohl and another drummer.
What a GEM !!!
Who here got a WATT bear hug? It's like a Wesley Willis head butt.. WATT is amazing and what the world needs more of..
Mike is a good man. He signed my bass during the engine room tour.
This is bad ass. Pat is killing it on the slide;fucking rad.
This is absolutely epic
Mike Watt is one of the most down to Earth musicians within the past 30 years. I met him in Holland at a show he did. I'm just a complete nobody and he was downright cool to my friend and I. He's also a damned good bass player. Anyone who talks shit on him is just a waste of space and should cut their fingers off so they can't type any more shit online.
Same thing happened to me in Leicester, I took up bass after hearing him on the minutemen and it was so cool when he was just completely sound with me. Really great guy .
I've seen him 3 times and every time he's been out and about before the show, chatting people up. One time in '97 or '98, on the Contemplating the Engine Room tour, his amp gave out about 30 minutes into the set. He apologized profusely and explained it was his backup and they couldn't finish the set, but he asked everyone to stick around and hang out, then he hopped off the stage and parked himself at the bar. And he made sure he spoke to every person in that room (granted only about 20-30 die hards stuck around). I don't recall everything we talked about (it was 25 years ago); mostly small talk, and I remember he asked a lot of questions about me and was totally humble. Just a really good dude.
watt and grohl rhythm section is absolutely filthy
This is so cool! What a band!
Chip & Tony Kinman huge respect.
They actually kick some ass
I've never heard of them or him
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐!!!!
i had no idea eddie could be this humble lmao
2:45 you briefly get to imagine what it was like watching Dave record Everlong in the studio haha
What a lineup.
That was F**KING GREAT! Dave Grohl cracks me up. Like he said somewhere: I was born to play drums.
I love this song! Really really cool. Rock on Mike Watt! Subscribed.
I was reading Pearl Jam Twenty when I saw about this performance. i had to check out on You tube and see if there existed here, I'm really glad that someone had this video and Uploaded! Is amazing!
Holy crap. How come I have never heard this before. What da heck. This is great.
everything bout this is awesome!!!
This was a great album with lots of great guests. I think Flea even played a horn part on it
that's the stillest I've ever seen eddie. he's usually all over the place
It's Mike Watt's time, not Eddie Vedder with that guy from fIREHOSE time
He came DOWN on those strings at 2:17, managing to break one of at the bridge!
this was such an exciting surprise when I saw this on tv back then I was like holy crap that's EDDIE AND DAVE!!!!!
Hovercraft(Eddie on drums and his wife’s band), Foofighters opened. What an experience!!
Pat Smear is a fucking legend
I bought this album as soon as it came out… probably because BSSM was dedicated to Mike Watt. Then I just learnt today that one of the singers from QOTSA’s Songs for the Deaf sung Max and Wells! Mark Lanegan… what a legend!
Gotta respect the massive talent on that stage. Mm, pj, ff. Wow.
Dave is playing William Goldsmith's drum kit.
Mike Watt is a beast!
Such a good album.
The album version has J Mascis on guitar too! Everyone should check out the video for it. They got in to shit for it by the train company.
PAT! My eyes are usually fixed on Dave, but Pat murdered this song!
The year I was born. Amazing. I can't believe I wasn't born earlier to discover this while it was happening.
He's sitting back, showing respect for people he admires....that's why he's playing with them. They may not be as "famous" as him, but he knows that they shaped what he does.
Bro in all honesty for me being a MUSICIAN my self. I CAN TELL YOU THIS GUY MIKE WADDDD. CAN NOT SING MUCH LESS PLAY BASS. THEY SHOULD LET PAT SING OR EDDIE!!!! THIS GUY IS A DISSHOVLED DRUNK WITH POPULAR REAL MUSICIAN FRIENDS!!!!
@@jacobmaldonado6406 you are a fuckin moron. Eddie Vedder is BY FAR the least talented person on that stage, and he would admit it.
@@PunkRicksVideos WOW 7 YEARS LATER BRAAA. ... HELLO FROM CORPUS CHRISTI TEXAS !!! MIKE WADD IN MY OPINION CANNOT SING BRO. LISTEN. TO PATS 1987 ALBUM RUTHENSMEAR!! AND OF COURSE EDDIE SONG BLACK!!! thanks bro for replying!!!

Check out the new Double Vinyl of the tour called:
Mike Watt "Ring Spiel" Tour `95...........
It`s in constant rotation here !
And Eddie LOVES Watt........and I can dig it.........Respect !
I saw them during foo fighters first tour. Eddie played drums for his wife’s band also. So fun
This is an awesome version of Big Train. I just wish I could have seen this line up.
Andrew Karger
They toured for a bit in '95 until too many folks either complained about or stargazed at Vedder before he dropped out. That's how I remember it without bothering to actually look it up, anyway.
Ohhh yessss
Three of the big players in the Seattle scene who weren't from Seattle. Vedder/San Diego, Grohl/D.C. and Smear/Los Angeles.
Hell yes!
What a star-studded backup band
I saw fIREHOSE in Tuscaloosa Alabama and Dallas Texas.
How many strings did Mike break?
EDDIE VEDDER PAT SMEAR AND DAVE GROHL ALL SUPPORTING MIKE WATT :) NICE , THE 90S DEFINITELY HAD BETTER ROCK N ROLL MUSIC WITH REAL SOUL TO IT
Mike's supergroup fantasy CREW was SICK 😎
Saw him open up for Primus at the Greek theater in Berkeley
Pat Smear is just a mood
God i love his bass he is so good and hell look at this super group but this song got me before ik eddy and them.where on the cd
Wow some of y'all really need to listen to the Minutemen cuz you don't know Mike Watt at all
Wow ....I seen the Minutemen & Circle Jerks at the LA STREET Scene I seen Firehose too when they use to have it ....years ago they set the PUNK stage right upfront by the Station...needless to say a riot broke out found out later it was said a guy we went to high school with thru a beer bottle...not sure but we ran ...reminds me of Pretender video of foo cus it was like that and also that was the last time they had the Punk bands there! At least we got to see some bands before that happened. I cant remember the year cus I seen so many!
Minutemen are one of the most unacknowledged bands along with Meat Puppets, sst label mates
Super groovy!
cool!!!
I air drum the beginning of this and it's gets my friend laughing hysterically
Pat Smear is a bad ass
