I moved to Atlanta in 1990. This is traveling from downtown, north to midtown. Jin's Wigs at 1:04 on the left, is where most drag queens bought their hair back then. The infamous Backstreet nightclub is on the right at 4:48. The stories that came of that place could fill a library. The Margaret Mitchell house (last shot at end of video) is missing it's exterior wall on the right, due to a massive fire. it sat for years in the same condition and looked like a giant doll house, because you could see all the rooms from the street. It was eventually torn down and a new museum house was built. Loved Atlanta back then--it was a lot of fun.
There was some place downtown that had giant plaster neon green slime on the front. I can't remember where or what it was

Well, as fun as it may have been, the 80's were a lot MORE fun (at least early on). Actually, as far as "fun" goes, the late 70's topped the 80's (if you know what I mean). Frankly, it appears that culturally, and socially, we've been on a downward spiral ever since 1982, when all the fun came to a head and abruptly, changed gears, as it were. Why, well, it was all we could do, to carry on, as if nothing had changed, when indeed, everything had. We do seem to manage though, don't we? We make the best of things as they are. I just wish the show could have maintained its "bright lights," so to speak. That way, I'd still be entertained by it. Oh well, it's all for the best, I suppose. Those of us, in the know, find other ways to fulfill the days of our lives. Carry on. Carry on.
When older Atlanta residents say we miss the old Atlanta, videos like this one bring back haunting memories. Before Freaknic, before Music Midtown or before Atlanta became Hollywood south, we came together as a city during the late 80s and early 90 for events such as 'Light Up Atlanta". We ditched our cars and walked and mingled down Peachtree Street. The Arts festival in Piedmont Park was an event the whole metro came out for, literally fun without drama. Atlanta had a certain charm, young dudes like me on our own for the first time could actually make it in Atlanta, jobs were literally one next door to the other, I bought my first car for cash and rented an apartment between downtown and midtown, and I could afford to take a girl on a date,[they actually spoke to young men back then] Then suddenly there was an effort to build Atlanta into an international city, that effort continues, but the charm is long gone. Freaknic, The Olympics, Hollywood, 6,000,000 metro residents....

I think the Olympics were the beginning of the end of Atlanta. What exists now is barely recognizable as the same city ...so much has changed and not for the better.

I kinda love that though. A 20 year old car and a 10 year old car and a brand new car all look similar enough (and pretty) to the point where all the cars on the road are pretty now. No more ugly 80s or 90s cars. It’s all well designed 2000s + cars and the styling all looks new

They’re still pretty clean for a major city imo 🤷♂️. Occasionally you’ll find a trash on the ground but people are trash and sometimes they’ll throw a piece of garbage onto the ground
This is when downtown was vibrant and full of life. Midtown was basically a dump and a shadow of what it is now. Now it's downtown that's a dump and midtown is thriving and vibrant. I miss the old days but without the crime that came with the crack epidemic.
One interesting thing I noticed is just how many recognizable skyscrapers were already present in the 90s. I thought a lot of them would be newer. There also seem to be so many more smaller roadside shops and retail all of which has now been transformed into big supermarkets and restaurants. The city looks much better than in the 90s I’d say but the downtown area certainly seems so much cooler back then. Midtown is so completely different now. The modern glass and steel aesthetic has taken over and buildings are going up quick filling up the skyline.
Hello, I was wondering if it was possible to use a piece of this archival footage for an upcoming non-commercial video? We would give credit if allowed.
I've always wondered what Atlanta looked like during the days of "Too Legit to quit" Falcons. I still can't let go of my Saints losing to the Falcons in the Wild Card Playoff game.
This is when i grew up in ATL. Pre Olympic ATL...when u could still go straight down west ptree at 4:04. Pre Olympic ATL had more mom n pop shops and places to eat down town. And midtown was a lil run down, unlike the overpriced area it is today
They're driving past Woodruff Park during the third minute of the video. I live in ATL but never knew those beautiful historic buildings are there! I'm gonna do some sightseeing there.
I notice that downtown Atlanta was a lot more happening back then. There isn’t nearly as much foot traffic now. They are building it back up since so many people are crammed into Atlanta.

This is when you use to park your car and not return to something with the glass bust out. The time when it wasn’t a sea of homeless near the capital or underground. Everybody had an opportunity back then. You could work at radio shack and still own a home
fun fact : hmm the crysler at @5:21 is a official government car. Lime green ,used by military police and recruiters could spot those anywhere back then. Ugly cars
Centennial Olympic Park wasn't there, nor the Georgia Aquarium, World Of Coke, or any of many other attractions around the park. There also weren't some buildings there at the time that were constructed around Ivan Allen in the early 2000s. Georgia state dorms were not there. Truist Plaza Building (SunTrust Plaza) was still being constructed. Macy's was still in operation in downtown. There have been changes, but the changes do pale in comparison to what has happened in midtown, "West Midtown", and Buckhead since then.
MARTA buses never really changed much throughout the 80s and 90s. The difference is that by the late 90s they started phasing out a lot of the accordion type long buses.

The difference is attributed to the FMVSS rules allowing composite headlamps rather than mandating sealed beam units in the mid-1980s.
