Driving through Atlanta Georgia 1989

- Was on my way from Florida and did this road video coming through Atlanta, Georgia. Notice all the old automobiles in Atlanta. This video will give you a history of the interstate through Atlanta from around 1989. I was traveling on Interstate 75 to Knoxville. (I was reviewing my video this morning 7/4/2019 and I did not see any intestate construction in 1989. That makes this video even more unusual. Sure would like to get some comments from safety and construction people about what they see and don't see in this video) ALSO... I have received comments about the audio track. I am using a sound effect from UA-cam because my wife and I were recording this inside the vehicle and I am sure our dialog would not need to be heard. LOL

What I notice, that you breezed through Downtown, like 3 other cars on the road, the skyline is sooooo different. I actually enjoyed taking this ride with you thanks!

Look at no traffic and no folks from other states being here! My peaceful Atlanta I do miss thee. I was 7 years old in 89. All our trees has been cut down for apartments and buildings, as they drove through the city to Howell mill I’m like I can’t believe how chill this used to be. Atlanta is a mess now!!!! Imagine 25 years from now OMG 😳

The Atlanta Metro in 1989 had about 2.8 million people. Today, it nearly has 6 million people. The population has over doubled.
I was only six at this time and i remember when traffic use to flow like this smh old school ATL this the city i remember
The thing that surprises me today when I look back to the day when my wife and I were traveling up I-75 through Atlanta. We almost decided to bypass Atlanta because we knew the traffic would be heavy. Can you believe how surprised we would have been if we had a crystal ball and could see the 2019 Atlanta traffic. It is amazing how times change. Thanks for your comment because I love to hear stories from people who have experienced 20th and 21st century traffic in Atlanta :)
Thanks for the video, I've grown up in and around metro Atlanta my entire life. Now at 52 I remember those days so well. All through the 80's into the early 90's Atlanta and the Buckhead area was considered the best area in the south for the social scene.

Reading all the comments about traffic, Atlanta has tremendously grown. Metro Atlanta Population was under 3 millon in the late 80s, early 90s. Today the population is almost to 7 million. And the metro Atlanta cities and state havent done anything in regards for transit with the population growth. Anyway nice video.
Makes me wonder what technology will do to the big metro areas. Many have discovered working from home remotely works just as well. Thanks for your comment :)

Thanks for this memory. I was at Georgia Tech from '85-'96. I could drive from the airport to my apartment by muscle memory! In '85 the downtown connector was absolutely terrible because of construction. In some spots it was a single lane or two split singles under the bridges. As a freshman on the airport shuttle I remember having to time it right so not to miss the flight. What we see in this video is the result of that construction and the early traffic flow that was based on maybe four or six lanes total just a couple of years prior. Now, when visiting, it is always a nightmare. Like other commenters, traffic looks so orderly. The funniest thing is that I always thought people drove crazy around the downtown exits (which were a little challenging at peak times). Amazing what happens when cars are just a bit less capable, wider lanes, and no cell phones are in the picture. After visiting Atlanta recently, though, I can't say I miss it. Heck, I can't miss it, because I can't recognize where anything was anymore. It's all gone!

That is funny. I was wondering if someone would notice I was using a sound effect loop from UA-cam. The audio of the VCR tape would be incriminating if added to that day on the road in Atlanta LOL
At the time, this section of 75/85 (the Downtown Connector) had just gone through a massive expansion and reconstruction project. Took about 5 years or so to finish. It didn’t take too many more years after this for traffic to fill all those lanes back up.

This is interesting. I’m actually surprised at how little Atlanta has changed. Watching that drive into downtown felt similar to driving downtown on a light day in 2020. Things got VERY different approaching 17th St and into Marietta though.

You made my day! 🤝 I was born in 1989 and was raised in techwood homes, which was across from The Varsity, and right directly across the bridge was a Wendy's (11:10-11:17) we used to go to. which was quickly torn down as well as techwood homes to make way for the 1996 olympics.. Thank you🤗

It's crazy how different, yet how similar Atlanta looks. It's my home city, for sure, but so different. No traffic, no massive construction, no giant Bank of America Plaza.
History is amazing
Wow! 18 minutes from Forest Parkway to Mount Paran Road. The lanes were wider before the HOV lanes and the Olympics came. Not as much white knuckle driving. No Turner Field, no Olympic Village housing at North Avenue.

No Atlantic station either
Atlanta Airport has grown. I remember when there were no HOV/HOT lanes. No 17th Street Bridge at the time. Bank of America Plaza wasn't even built yet. Former Atlanta Fulton County Stadium is long gone... may it and The Omni RIP. Westin Peachtree Plaza and Georgia State Capitol are still there, along with the Equitable Building, and One Atlantic Plaza (also known as the IBM Tower). The following year, IOC awarded Atlanta the 1996 Olympics. Atlanta and Georgia have changed and grown so much.
Thanks for the excellent information. At the time of this video my wife and I were returning from vacation in Orlando. My wife was operating the VCR camera, and I told her to keep it pointed down the road. When I can find the time I plan to get this video digitally enhanced. When I do I will post it. :)
Even for back then, this had to be on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Rush hour traffic has never been this light.

We had some flooding in Tennessee, and I mistakenly thought you were asking about that. My mistake and thank you for watching my Atlanta traffic video. I will try and get this digitized and re post someday.

I can remember talking to my wife about bypassing Atlanta because of the traffic. In my memory I believe this was the last time I was in Atlanta. If I was worried about being on I-75 back then I don't think I would attempt to drive in Atlanta now LOL
Nowadays myself going to visit my wife's mom in Florida we usually journey through downtown Atlanta at night. And even then around 10pm EST it's still pretty busy😯😯

The exit numbers didn't match the mile markers, they were in sequence!

yeah today the exit numbers match the mile markers(increasing from 1-355 south to north on I-75) so in here from example i think spring street was exit 101 but now its exit 249. back in the day i guess each exit number corresponded to number the exit was coming from south to north(so the first exit crossing from florida to georgia would be exit 1 and so on and so forth) not sure though

It may have seemed sleepy back then but it was actually in the midst of an incredible growth about to bust wide open even more after being awarded the 1996 Olympics. It was ranked in the top fastest growing areas in the country,

The audio doesnt match the video. Crickets and doors being shut in the background, not to mention the same sounds are being looped over and over. The audio was recorded on the side of another road. Weird.
You are absolutely correct. This was back in the old heavy VCR days. I could have picked a more appropriate UA-cam audio loop :-) anyway thanks for watching the visuals.

I noticed different that the traffic is flowing nicely no Hov lanes or anything. The way traffic is now in ATL I wouldn't be surprised if they get tolls in the future. I also don't see police cars and firetrucks back then like it is now.
Another thing I did not see was construction work :)
They just in the recent years got rid of the toll on 400.There's plenty of funding and no more need for anymore tolls. Plus there's nowhere else to build any large roadway,
Times have changed big time since then traffic is a mess.

LOL - What I did because my wife and I were having a conversation while the VCR camera was rolling. I went to UA-cam for some free sound effects. Thanks for asking and others had the same question :)
There was plenty of traffic then, particularly around Sandy Springs then up 85 to Duluth. I visited maybe eight years ago and was sad that the area between Suwanee and Alpharetta was all built over. That was my way to work and it was a pretty drive. Is the Sears house still there?

What month in 89?
I don't remember and I ask my wife who was using the VCR camera and she could not remember either. I was searching some of my old VCR tapes and found this. Sure wish High Definition digital had been available during those days. I also have a video entitled "FLORIDA 1989 FROM UNEDITED OLD VCR TAPE" You may see something in that video that will give you a clue. This VCR was recorded the same week as the "Driving through Atlanta". Thanks for asking. :)
How is living back in 89 then today
Like being on a Galaxy a Fur-Piece from Earth. LOL - I thought the Atlanta traffic was bad in 89 and I cannot imagine driving it now. I wish someone would take the same direction on the Interstate as I did in 89 and video it with a good GoPro. This video was recorded on a big VCR camera and the quality back then was not good.
