The downfall and confessions from the Dan Schneider interview and Nickelodeon is as disturbing as it is denial. From his interactions with Amanda Bynes, Jeanette McCurdy, Ariana Grande, Brian Hearne, and countless others, Dan Schneider’s creations of child fame, to multiple alleged crimes and bad behavior, Dan Schneider’s strange apology and documentary are eye opening about Nickelodeon and Dan Schneider. Who do you think is to blame? Is anyone? And what is next for Dan?

Like I’m supposed to believe the children of 10/20 years ago, the children of any amount of time ago, were somehow less human or less children. Regardless of cultural differences in what “a childhood” looks like, humans all have basically the same developmental stages where we move through time and do all the physical chemical stuff, like, pretty damn sure those kids from the past were in fact literally just kids.

true. Before I was like "I don't like Miley. I don't like Ariana" and while yes they still have accountability over their actions... a lot of them have trauma that they have not fully dealt with yet. Yeah some of them have "f you money" and can get therapy for these things, but it's like... it shouldn't have happened in the first place. It's like having a shirt and it getting stained. Of course you can get a stain remover or buy a new one, but that's extra steps to something that could've simply not happened if things were better. In this case it's not just accidentally spilling something on yourself, but the neglect of adults in the room and of course the awful audacity of the predators doing these actions.
I still don't like many celebrities because some actions, while correlated with trauma are still awful and any child can tell you it's wrong even if you have a troubled past (plus my opinion is my opinion. Ariana isn't losing on millions because one unemployed person dislikes her). But I wish them all the best with healing.

The thing that gets me is that the problem wasn’t that the kids didn’t want to be in television, and by saying he wants a therapist there to make sure the kids really want to be there is blaming the children again for their bad experience, because he’s implying that their trauma is a result of not wanting to be there.

I'm a former child actor. Older than these kids, I wasn't on Nickelodeon, but I can tell you this abuse started with the very first child actor Jackie Coogan, and has gone through pretty much all of us for over a hundred years ago down to today. I didn't want to be an actor, and repeatedly told people that, and they didn't care. Also, I WILL criticise Dan -- his solution is to make it clear to children that they might be working around predators and will possibly be assaulted, are the fine with that? Just sign the dotted line. I have a huge problem with his closing statement.

A very important point needs to be made. Nickelodeon has been getting a ton of blowback over these revelations, all of it deserved. But this isn't a Nickelodeon problem, it's an industry problem. As long as young kids desperate for stardom are in the media industry, it'll be so easy for adults to abuse/manipulate/take advantage of them that serious oversight and vigilance are going to be required to protect them. Without major reforms in how the industry operates, nothing's going to stop the next Dan Schneider from wrecking lives.

I was a Nick era kid, and that “well the law said so it’s fine to depict create and perpetrate this predatory material shrugs that means it’s fine” was _everywhere_ in fanfiction culture in the 2010s. There are so many things so many of us were exposed to as kids that are not okay and were never okay. Because kids grow up and learn that they fundamentally can’t comprehend predation against children as anything but apocalyptic violence against another human being, that can only elicit whatever personal version of divine fury against the perpetrators.
The excuses adults made around people who were kids then don’t hold up now that we’re their age. They deserve accountability.

Regarding the "people could have spoke up with jokes," that's very hard to argue with children's shows of the era. Animaniacs, Ren and Stimpy, and Rocco's Modern Life writers would basically complete to see what they could get past the censors, and is a large reason why those cartoons are still enjoyable for adults all these years later. One of those shows said "to get a joke you want in, make a joke that's so inappropriate and so when it gets rejected you can propose the joke you actually want."
Key word, cartoon, animation, work done 100% by adults, no children were harmed in the making of this program. How many times were there jokes that were "10 steps to far" to be "replaced" with jokes "1 step too far (that was the original joke)?" Chances are, a lot.

@@alyssabrown-carleton6173 I'm not surprised or disappointed because honestly most of Hollywood is disgusting. Rider being most concerned about the legacy of Boy Meets World was ridiculous. BMW was a sitcomised 90s version of The Wonder Years. Middle male child with a brother and sister trying to figure out how the world works as he grows up.
The ~legacy~ of Boy Meets World-- a very forgettable sitcom- over the mental health and well-being of a human. Really gross.
But I find it awful that Will and Rider spent the entire podcast trying to make it sound like they were the victims and not even apologising for writing the letter. Danielle helped them a lot by insisting they were groomed, making it sound like they were kids when all this happened.
Rider was 24. Will was 28 years old. They knew it was involving a child. They sat in that court room and looked that boy in the eyes and still said nothing. I find that really gross that they didn't take accountability and apologise, and just made excuses instead.
I find it even worse that a few days later they're like 'hey we are thinking of making a documentary about our show!' knowing that it would push the articles about them writing letters down further because news tends to show what is most recent. Classic techniques to escape accountability and jump over the fence to change the topic before anyone realises it.

I'm getting so tired of perpetrators always wanting to come out and "apologize" for harm they cause to others when they get caught. They all think the same way. Oh I got exposed let me try to make things right. Like no! It's too late for that. You had the chance to stop doing what you did and you didn't. It's always the same old thing they do. Deflect, and "apologize" when their caught.

I hope Dan and everyone who protected him, looking at you CEO of Paramount, as well as the parents who purposefully looked away instead of protecting their children - all get charged and serve time and are listed as child predators.

More and more people need to continue to protest for that and support these alumni child stars. That’s the only way, they’ll take action and hold him accountable. Obviously the higher authorities won’t take the initiative and do it on their own. 🙄

I don’t think Nickelodeon cares about all of the things that have happened, only about their image and money. Dan should definitely be held accountable for his actions as well as Drake Bell. I am very sad for Drake though for what he was put through, I’m sure this is what led him to his inappropriate actions.

The point about having therapists in the hiring process “to make sure they really want to be in this business” feels like weeding out the ones that will talk. Those that really want it will stay quiet to have the career they really want. I think having a therapist available during filming would be better to be a safe place to voice abuse concerns and help get kids help.
But in a world where Drake was a jail bate tempter, how could that be successful?

I grew up on so many of these nickelodeon kid shows and although I didn’t understand most of the jokes never knew how bad they were until seeing them again now. The more I hear about the situation with the 3 convicted C predators that worked on many of Dan’s sets/shows, and the whole sh*t fire show that is the Dan situations in general. I want to know how Nickelodeon never saw any of this going on, or saw any warning signs, nor did anything to fix the numerous problems until far too late and so many people were already hurt by them. It all kinda comes back to Nickelodeon to me. If they never hired Dan and possibly the predators (still haven’t seen anything proving weather it was Nickelodeon or Dan who hired them) none of them wouldn’t have gotten the power and potential to cause so much damage and trauma, to so many people throughout their times and it’s just horrible.

  • @Politoed89
    @Politoed89 Місяць тому +5

also, you mention other Nickolodeon shows having inappropriate jokes (like the Rocko one), and how dan was sort of implying that his shows were similar to that, but like. nobody on the crew of rocko's modern life was an actual child, or in direct physical contact with dan. while those jokes are still inappropriate in general, it's insane for dan to try to treat what happens on a cartoon to things that are done to children in real life by someone with real power over them. at the end of the day, the wallaby from rocko's modern life doesn't have to carry this trauma for decades afterwards, and it's so gross and disingenuous for dan to treat it otherwise

Something that struck me as odd in the documentary: several of the former child stars said that, as kids, they viewed Dan and other adults as “friends,” which is very messed up. Also, I was surprised that the children were separated from the parents while on set. This is messed up too. The parent (or whoever is responsible for the child) should be there at all times with the kid.

So I was four maybe five when I did a casting for a modeling agency in San Francisco, my mom dad grandma and aunt were with me, there WERE a few celebrities there and one was screech and another actor from saved by the bell, this was late 90s and I liked screech but I wouldn’t talk to look at touch or be around the other male actor from saved by the bell and it cost me the job but I don’t regret it AT ALL my mom and dad knew that I could sense something wasn’t right. Turns out, there was truth in my intuition. Trust your kids, they will know and believe them.

The damage that Dirty Dan did and allowed to be done will stay forever. Learning of the horrifying details behind the scenes of a lot of my favorite childhood shows has been a kick to the heart. While I was being entertained, the performers and writers were being traumatized. That's a hard pill to swallow. The fact that Dirty Dan, Brian Peck, and the rest of the degenerates aren't behind bars right now is a shame but at least, the truth is out there and continuing to be added to as more people speak out. They will never be able to have the power to harm others ever again. What's done in the dark always comes to light. On a brighter note, my Petty University hoodie arrived and I absolutely adore it! I'll be picking up 2 more for graduation gifts for my sisters ASAP. Thank you for everything that you and your team do. It's not drama, it's dangerous and you guys are helping people on their healing journeys and sounding the alarm. ❤
