No other lore is as mastered and balanced because it took a lifetime to perfect. I tried to get into Warhammer 40k lore and my gosh it's a tangled up mess and so difficult to follow and understand. This was amazing man. Thank you. I have been watching “Rings of Power” and it’s missing so much detail and the story is not the same so I’m glad I came upon this. Truly amazing.
Its interesting to read in the Silmarillion that the elves made the rings because they wanted to create Valinor in Middle Earth, rather than return there. I think that’s why they fell to Sauron’s deception, because it was in their pride they did this. Similar to the Tower of Babel

@jedipoz it completely goes against the lore and the writing is so bad it's mind boggling. Worst tv show ever. It's blasphemy of Tolkiens works. I hope it gets canceled and the show runners never get another job in media again. Absolutely travesty
The second age is the period where Sauron was a pseudo Promethean figure generating religious engineering in Harad and Rhûn with the metallurgical revolution he made in the east and south. He was like Mephistopheles from Goethe's Faust or Azazel from the book of Enoch or Lucifer from Paradise Lost. Galadriel was supposed to be a sage and a political opponent of Annatar's reformist ideas. She used arguments and debates to fight Sauron in the Unfinished Tales version. She was a philosopher-queen archetype. Númenor is a moral and theological story about life vs death vs immortality vs human nature.
Indeed Numenor deserved its own trilogy/saga of books! It already is a fun case-study in its current form, that a fully developed Second Age would’ve been so rich thematically. First Age would be the most fun out of all 3 ages bc duh dragons, balrog-led armies, elven kingdoms, valar & Maiar. Narratively it’s exciting, But I think the themes there are pretty straightforward, good vs evil, the pitfalls of vengeance, biblical motifs, etc. Second Age is so interesting as a transitory era between two bookends, and as a standalone piece as well. In the whole Lore, it takes the huge climax and resolution of Morgoth’s wars and develops the world in ways that make sense while also showing us exactly where fates were changed by events to eventually converge upon Frodo and Friends starting thousands years back. On its own it takes critical looks into human nature that can make anyone not familiar with Middle Earth ponder about the boundaries between success and greed, fear of death, meaning of death (gift vs curse), importance/gravity of making objects a symbol (white trees, gems, armor, banners, heirlooms, specific alphabets even). And (with much bias admittedly) Third Age is perfect balance of biblical imagery and language with philosophical themes and debates. Yet, I think having seen third age on-screen we would all love the debates on 2nd age a tad more bc the topics touched on in 3rd Age are developed arguments of 2nd age topics. 2nd age-what’s the effects of placing symbolic importance on items? 3rd Age-a positive symbol of Narsil and a negative one, the One Ring, we see what we get from that question. Second age-How should one view death? 3rd Age-rohirrim charge into battle yelling “death” to accept their ruin while doing their duty, literally fighting off death. Versus, Denothor & Boromir’s fear hurting Gondor’s chances. Second age-numenor’s success was not shared and was full of arrogance, when does success sour? 3rd Age-Thorin Oakenshield successfully reclaims the Lonely Mountain but destroys Laketown. He drops his greed in order to win the Battle of the Five Armies, bc success turns to greed when you stop thinking about others but can turn back to success, when done in reverse. So on and so on. All the things we love in Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit really form in the Second Age & can see how foundational ideas turn into massive waves down the line.
Never understood how the Three diminished with the destruction of The One, as they were made without Sauron. It begs the question what these "techniques" were that Annatar used in the forging of the Rings that would still connect them to The One. Always made me wonder what magic was woven into them, when Sauron himself learned the craft from the elves?
The Three elven rings were crafted without Sauron being present so they weren't affected as much as the seven and the nine, but they were crafted with Sauron's knowledge and magic which he taught the elves, that's why when the one ring is destroyed the three elven rings lose their power, since the one is the master ring, hope this helps.
It keeps me thinking in wonder how immense the world Tolkien created actually is. Created by one person. I keep listening to these videos since it is long past since I ve read the books. All of it.
I find it interesting how, in the books, Sam actually puts on the One Ring after seeing Frodo being taken away by the orcs to Cirith Ungol, but his presence is not immediately felt by Sauron or the Wraiths. It is said that only by wearing the ring within the borders of Mordor the eye would be able to see the bearer (an interesting change by Peter Jackson that I particularly appreciate). However, do you know why that is in the books, Nerd of the Rings? Ps: I love your videos!
You know ... I like vlogs like this, not usually for the content, but that 48 minutes can be devoted to expounding on a story. I like the hobbit story and when they all stream for free I'll sometimes make it a couple day marathon of the movies in order.
Thank you so much Matt for this wonderfully full account of the Rings of Power. I’ve no idea how you find the time to do all that you do without your own ring but it is do enjoyable to share thanks again 👍👍
If that’s the case, why is Nenya the white Ring of Water (that beautifies flora) and Vilya is the blue Ring of Air (keeps his sanctuary protected by water)? I’ve often mistaken these two because their Ring titles are confusing.
It occurs to me that the possible reason even the valar could not take possession of The Ring is because they would have to dominate Sauron's will in the ring in order to be unchanged by it, and this would be tantamount to placing that will in bondage. As such, they would become as Sauron himself, needing to dominate in order to remain in control, and needing control specifically because of The Ring. And so Sauron would eventually have a successor, as this need to dominate grew and expressed itself outside of The Ring. Unmaking The Ring was the only viable option.
I think at least part of the problem with the show is they don't have the rights to a lot. But still season 2 isn't that bad. No excuses for season 1 though
Nerd of the Rings will not get involved in discussing ROP at all methinks, not now anyway. Nerd is a fence sitter on the whole ROP thing, used to be on the ROP side earlier on methinks. lol
100% when you think about how powerful the ring gets the deeper they go into Mordor and how powerful Sauron would be with it in Mordor. It really adds to the feat of Gil-Galad and Elendil defeating him in combat.
Wait im sorry WHAT!? Golem slipped!? I had to google when you said that to then find out that Eru intervened a second time at the end of the Third Age, causing Gollum to trip and fall into the fires of Mount Doom while holding the One Ring, thus destroying it. Just WOW 😳 🤯🤯
I was just watching another video, and it made me wonder. Why do you think when Saruman captured Gandalf he didn't take his ring from him? He knew he had it and coveted it, the only explanations I can think of is plot oversight or he didn't have it on him. Maybe he still wanted him on his side and believed he did not need to take it since he wanted the one ring more? Probably just oversight by Tolkien, but I am curious about a lore explanation.
In the books, Saruman has created his own ring. Possibly a matter of hubris and confidence in his own ring - or his faith that he would get the One, at which point the 3 become useless to their owners
@@NerdoftheRings Little is said about Saruman's ring, so it is difficult to guess there. Possible though. Saruman definitely was full of pride, that seems to be his primary 'sin'. My guess is that let him keep it to make Gandalf more likely to join him (he was imprisoned and could always seize it later, and his ultimate goal was, as you say, the One. A sacrifice now for a larger goal.). At the same time Sauron coveted the One Ring, but also still wanted the other rings too, his love for the One Ring wouldn't have stopped him from taking the Elven rings as well, though he also was willing to give the Dwarf rings back when it suited his purposes. Saruman could be doing the same. Just an excuse to read the books again and see if I can find an answer I guess. I appreciate the response. Awesome video!
I 100% agree with the idea that the rings, all 20 of them, enhance the nature of their bearers. Often to darker ends, save for the Elven three. Even if we know that Sauron never held the ring given to Durin III, its very existence still had a similar effect upon him. Further pressing the idea that the rings themselves, even without the enhancement by Sauron's evil, had a subtle coercive nature.
You know, the elves should have made 2 more rings for Earth and heart. If they combine their power fire, water, air, earth and heart, they can summon Capt. Middle Earth and Sauron would have been defeated.
Oh man, just imagine if Sauron had managed to coax the Balrog out of Moria to come work for him. Surely, he’d have heard of Durin’s Bane and had *some* suspicion of what it might be?
You mention Durin lll as having brought the Arkenstone to Eribor, while it was found in the Lonely Mountain, not brought there. They even named it the Heart of the Mountain.
I feel like if the lesser rings were an “essay”, and the Three were masterpieces, then the Seven had to have been lesser iterations of the Nine on a spectrum of power. This would explain how the Seven didn’t grant Sauron control over the dwarves or turn them invisible. Celebrimbor hadn’t unlocked those skill points yet, so to speak, so his creations lacked from their full potential. All 16 rings were intended to have, and would have had, the same abilities, level of power and effect on their bearers, had Celebrimbor already mastered the craft prior to their making, but he had to learn it first. The Three would have remained the same, but would be rivaled by the 16 in this instance as well.
Question: if the rings of power are all sort of "linked" in a way that each wearer can sense the presence of the other wearers (which is why they were immediately aware of when Sauron put his ring on, and they took theirs off) then does this mean Gandalf, Elrond, and Galadriel could sense the other ring bearers such as Isildur, Smeagol, and Bilbo? Or did it only work for Sauron because the ring was made specifically for him?
Still, the Redbeards and the Broadbeams were already in Khazad Dum by then… either some remnants of those clans still survived independently, or Sauron did indeed give three rings to Khazad Dum. “Three he had recovered, and the others the dragons have consumed”, as Gandalf stated… either they were lost in Moria and given back to Sauron by the Orcs, or they were consumed by the dragons in the Grey Mountains.
A decade ago I used tp read really intelligent Russian discussions from the 2000s about how the Rings were colour-coded for the Mongol Hordes - Wilya (blue), Nenya (white), Narya (golden horde). That's the level you won't see in the West. - Adûnâi

Love this series
How long does it take you to make a video like this, with research and editing? do you have help? Great job!
Shout out to NOTR for still using Shadow of wars' version of Celebrimbor, instead of Amazon's version!
U guys are amazing 🔥🔥
It should be great video!
You know, the elves should have made 2 more rings for Earth and heart. If they combine their power fire, water, air, earth and heart, they can summon Capt. Middle Earth and Sauron would have been defeated.
You need to review HOME box set 4 soon
I have them in my Nerd Cave waiting to be reviewed! Might combine it and Poems into a single video to get it out sooner. Haven't decided for sure.
@@NerdoftheRingsare you gonna do a review or at least show us the books you picked up over seas?
Happy Hobbit day and a great start to Tolkien Week!
Thank you!! ❤
Oh man, just imagine if Sauron had managed to coax the Balrog out of Moria to come work for him. Surely, he’d have heard of Durin’s Bane and had *some* suspicion of what it might be?
Balrogs are basically the same power level of Sauron and were loyal to only morgoth. They probably wouldn’t follow him.
@@peewee0224 Yes, hence the need to coax it out, rather than just go in and boss it around.
I was just wishing for this video 😮 YESSSS !!!!🎉
You mention Durin lll as having brought the Arkenstone to Eribor, while it was found in the Lonely Mountain, not brought there. They even named it the Heart of the Mountain.
Great job reciting the black speech!
the WoW music is a nice touch
A movie/show about scatha the worm would be cool
It may also have been the qualities of the dwarves as well, but this is just an uninformed opinion.
8:22 Frodo looks like he saw a ghost, which he did, the witch king has no face

I'm so much more confused now about timelines because of the show... 😆
Really love the lore and story telling but the amount of ads is crazy😅
Is it? Shoot, I’ll have to double check when I get home. I may have accidentally left it on auto. Sometimes UA-cam does way too many. Thanks for the heads up!
@@NerdoftheRings thanks for checking, I think we all get you have to get ads otherwise its to time consuming for you to keep up the upload rate etc but this was crazy thanks for all your info of middle earth and for your reaction!♡
I often wonder if Gollum had actually slipped in Frodo's blood at the Cracks of Doom.. Little extra bit of poetic justice...
If only Amazon payed attention, bought the correct rights and adhered to the lore, it might have been such a good show
