If Gondor/Arnor and the Numenoreans are what man can be when granted divine power, Rohan/Dale are what man can be with their greatest self-potential is achieved.
That's so beautifully put. Aragorn has never been the most compelling hero to me, because he seems too perfect; especially in the movies, he always does the right thing and always seems to be right. King Theoden, by contrast, had such palpable vulnerability to him as a King. When he went to his fathers, in whose mighty company he would not now feel ashamed, it felt so earned. Needless to say, the same goes for the recently-late Bernard Hill, who brought so much to Middle-Earth through his supremely Shakespearean portrayal of one of its most compelling figures.
I love that moment when Galadriel conjures a mist to help the Eotheod move beyond the shadow on Mirkwood. In a way, she directly contributed to the establishment of Rohan and it's little moments of continuity that makes you love the lore of Middle Earth
One cannot help but admire her mental fortitude. She told Frodo that she is constantly aware of Sauron's power pushing against her own, which means that she basically engaging in a nonstop mental battle against him for centuries...
@@untruelie2640she kept her ring on, after all. She's basically left the backdoor to her mind open, and is just standing there in the doorway for centuries, refusing to admit him.

Bernard Hill’s portrayals have helped me through all of my exams in uni. *A Sword Day - A Red Day - ‘ERE THE SUN RISES* echoed in my ears when I rushed to review my materials and calmed my nerves to ride to war to my professors in my trusty Civic. Rest in Peace, Théoden King
I believe that some of the Edain who survived the War of Wrath but didn't go to Númenor fled over the Ered Luin as far east as Rhovanion and merged with their ancient kin who never traveled farther west. As an interesting note, the two marriages of kings of Rohan to women from the line of the princes of Dol Amroth introduced an Elvish strain into the royal house of the Rohirrim.
Probably my favorite faction of Tolkien's work. Just some tough people, grit and steel, against the dark forces of Middle Earth. *Forth Eorlingas!* RIP Bernard Hill, my favorite king.
He sure was. For me, the scene that touched me the most was the death of his son. Really felt that acting, with Shore's music and Peter Jackson camera angles etc.. could go on and on here.. a lovely mix of skilled an talented human beings working together.
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! spear shall be shaken, shield shall be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now, ride! 🐎 RIP
Hail the victorious dead....Long Live the King!..... Be at peace Bernard Hill, you made us fans feel inspired to fulfill our oaths and ride to another's aid. Thank you for an everlasting Legacy.
Ride now Théoden King, through the grey rain curtin of this world. Onto white shores and into that far green country. To the halls of your forefathers, in who's great company you will now find rest
Hail Théoden, King of the Mark! Everyone in the movies was perfectly cast, but it was Bernard Hill that makes you get the most lumps in your throat. From his grief at Théodred's death to his speech before the ride of the Rohirrim to his last scene.
A wonderful recounting of the history of Rohan! Thank you so much for your knowledge and appreciation of Tolkien's work. Best vid I've seen in some time!
Curious: Was anyone else at least a little sad that Theodin did not also honor Theodred with his final speech to Eowyn as he was dying on Pellenor Fields? I wanted this instead: “I go to my fathers. And to my son. Even in their mighty company I shall not now be ashamed.” I understand he’s speaking to the glorious bravery of his ancestors and how he now feels worthy to join them in whatever afterlife awaits. Yet as a man who has lost both a father and a son, I could not fathom my final thought on this earth-no matter the circumstances surrounding my death-excluding my child who died before me. I loved my father deeply and my heart broke when he died, but his death-like the death of his father before him-followed the natural course of things. My son’s death turned the universe upside down. It has never been righted, but I have adapted to an upside down universe. I had to. For my living children. I still cannot hear Theoden’s anguished line to Gandalf without weeping. “No parent should have to bury their child.” Read that dialogue out loud and out of context from this film. It is bare, howling and universally, eternally true.
Hail the victorious dead! Hail Theoden King!!! The ships have come to carry you home! Bernard Hill’s performance is one of my favorite things about the lotr trilogy. His epic calls to battle in both two towers and return of the king have stuck with me, inspiring me through some of the hardest times of my life. There was never a moment he wasn’t fully convincing as Theoden, an incredible, powerful performance. He will live on in our hearts!

I hope the credits for War of the Rohirrim this year starts with ''Dedicated to Bernard Hill'' or something like that.
That would be a great tribute.😁👍
How about just “For Bernard” ala Aragorn’s “For Frodo.” ❤
That would be very fitting!
