I read all Tolkien books as a non-native English speaker when I was a kid and I was proudly thinking that I knew quite a lot about the lore. Watching your videos made me admire Tolkien once more and brutally showed me how little I actually understood his words. Thank you. Off to reading them again I guess.
I first read The Hobbit when I was in the fifth grade in the mid-90s. Being a fan before the movies did create somewhat of a different perspective then those I know whose first exposure to Tolkien was the movies. Still, this channel, and Tolkien Untangled's channel, have really rekindled my love for the legendarium. Thank you. Truly.
Incredible work, thank you. I think you missed your calling as a screenwriter. You have a real gift for condensing detailed subject matter into a concise and entertaining story.
That is a GREAT cover of the entire story of Sauron. There's a lot readers of the side books by Christopher Tolkien could follow along with, but the nuances of the stories and how and when they all tie together is a great refresher. Wonder if you ever thought about doing a WHOLE STORY coverage over many videos based solely on timeline? where you do not skip ahead to other parts but keep everything in concise order, from start to finish? it would be a lot of videos and a lot of planning, but I've always wondered if it could be done. And who better to ask than you.
The extraordinary feat of Tolkien, is to have imagined a timeline so vast in only a small portion of his own mortal existence. Great summary. Thank you!
If the writers of rings of power had simply watched this video and considered the massive amount of material they had to work with, it would have actually been good. Idk who they had interpret the source material but whoever it was did an abysmal job. They completely fumbled such a massive opportunity for something great. Such a bummer. Never looked into this stuff before, such a rich world that Tolkien constructed. Lovin the vids! Does anyone know if there is anywhere in the lore that references the line from Anatar in the latest ROP episode where he says he was tortured by Morgoth? I'm curious about that story in particular, or if they just made it up. Lol
I just entered the LOTR universe and watched Hobbit the trilogy last weekend for the first time in 31 years of my life 😂 have always been a Potterhead so I never watched LOTR growing up although I heard greatness of it. Now that I have experienced the Hobbitses myself, I find the whole universe extremely fascinating - hence why I'm binge watching your videos now to understand more about it! Thank you!
I always wondered what Sauron and Finrods duel would look like from outside and how he became Morgoths right hand despite the fact that Melkor is the one who brought all this imperfection to world. Something he hated beyond all things. It makes you wonder how his relation with Melkor actually worked.
@@luudest The reason why he joined Melkor was that he loved order and hated wastefull friction as Tolkien says. And such things are the result of Melkors corruption upon the earth
@@oguzhanenescetin5702 Arda did not start out in a finished state. The original thought was for Melkor to start implementing the designs for Arda and then Manwë and the other Valar would bring those ideas to completion. But Melkor basically wanted everything his way and attempted to take complete control of Arda. I think that is what attracted Sauron; having one being at the top rather than something resembling a committee so to speak.
Maybe Sauron didn't see Melkor as bringing imperfection. Maybe he saw Illuvatar's plan as chaotic due to allowing everything free will, and saw Melkor's dominance as forcing order. Under Melkor, everything would be subservient to a single will. Without Melkor, freedom would mean that everything would have its own will and direction, constantly conflicting with one another. Therefore maybe he saw freedom as chaos.
Thank you so much! I've tried SO many times to read Tolkien's books but found the names impenetrable and hard to remember. Explanations like this are absolute gems!
Thanks for this. I’ve always been afraid of tackling massive undertaking of a story because of the overwhelming amount of lore. These videos are helpful🤘🏻
Hot take: Silmarillion is better than LotR. While LotR was the OG quest fantasy, it really can't be set apart from the many similar works that have been made since. The Silmarillion, however, is a different matter altogether. It gives a lot more meaning to LotR and also gives some characters more depth.
I wouldn't call it better. Just different. LotR is a MUCH more engaging read, and easy to follow narrative. The Silmarillion is an important history book that compiled the events of the first 2 ages and gives us a background and in depth understanding on the events of the third age.
Lotr: great, but not utterly exceptional story made incredible by the worldbuilding and Tolkiens pure chad style and language skills Silmarillion: the definitive epic history. Absolute masterclass in how to make a world feel like a legendary tale
I would love a movie, or movies, all about the tale of Beren and Luthien. So much fantastic mythology in that story and plays out in a very heroic fashion (not to mention the love story).
I've only ever watched the movies and TV Show I wasn't aware of how many times Sauron failed. It's actually insane how he never gave up. If his cause was good he'd of had Bards singing his song through the Ages. Even with him being Evil I respect his incredible perservearance.
Your Sauron and Gollem voices are shockingly well done, even for the caliber of your voice work with other characters. I almost stopped the video when I heard you start speaking the One Ring's inscription in the Black Tongue itself! I always love watching your videos. Thank you for sharing your passion with us.
Excellent, so well done. I am under the impression from reading all the books many years ago that Morgoth was still giving orders to Sauron even throughout the third age.
Thanks for your work. I havn't read the books, and it helps me understanding Tolkien's verse a lot, as why some fans are that disappointed by the current RoP show.
Dear Nerd of the Rings, from my young years I've been a fan or the world of Tolkien, I've read the lord of the ring and saw the movies (extend versions of course) more times then I can count, but I've never really been able to get my hands on all of Tolkien works and has a person who has a thirst for knowledge in the fantasy universe you are the best teacher I could have asked thank you to help me understand (and so many other ) the world ney the universe of the man himself
I think a video on how LotR has influenced fantasy media would be interesting. In particular, examining what elements of Dungeons and Dragons would be pretty cool.
Dude I love these videos, readings the books and the history is all good, but it's so cool to see it explained in a video, it's even way cooler with the artwork! 😊
Such black speech in one video will surely bring us darkness.. The enemy, The great eye, the darkness, The dark lord, murderer of Finrod, most evil of servants...Great job Mellon. Hope all is well. Remember, in your darkest hours...you are not alone.
Even Bard-dûr shows Sauron’s intricate personality. A physically impossible, grotesque but at the same time genial mountain-sized fortress, which fuses darkness and black metals with ‘adamant’. Sometimes Barad-dûr is mentioned in place of Sauron himself, and seems to embody the Dark Lord. Sometimes he is incarnated by metaphors, such as the Eye. Sauron as immensely more depth than one could think, but it derives from subtle details and other works such as The Silmarillion.
Whenever I listen to these stories, I have to remind myself this wasn’t part of real-world history but Tolkien’s fictional universe. It’s just so good and so real!
It really says something about the strength that Tolkien saw in men that Denethor was able to resist Sauron while Sarumon was not. It's sad that the movies do not treat mankind with the same reverence.
This is an absolutely amazing revelation. Hats off. With so much trash on this platform, this video is really a badge of relevance to it. This video is really an introduction into the part of the iceberg underneath the water that is the world of the mind of Tolkien, to those of us that are “dabblers”. Dabblers being HUGE fans that have read the three big books, and seen all the movies- both Jackson & Bakshi. Thank you for this video.
The show seems to date hop back and forth between events, and isn't very consistent, plus way too many stories going on and it feels like season 2 was just a build up to the siege of Eragion.
A minor quibble and correction, at timestamp 17:34 - The "Blue Wizards" are of the Istari, the group of five Maia that also included Gandalf, Saurman and Radagast. These five assume the forms of elderly human wizards, but they don't appear in Middle Earth until sent by the Valar in approximately the year 1000 of the THIRD age, over 3,000 years after the events of the Second age war between Sauron and the Elves of Eregion.
"While this development is not ideal for Sauron, his plans march on." Sauron's ability to adapt to things not going his way is admirable despite the fact that he is one of the villains.
In both movie triologies especially Ian McKellen as Gandalf but in some scenes also Christopher Lee as Saruman, excellently portrait how deeply traumatized even the Istari are from all the events layed out here. The horrors of these times haunt them.
This was epic. Currently reading my young sons The Hobbit and was inspired to watch the extended editions for first time. Completely gone Middle-earth mad, not for the first time in my life.
I would love to see the fight on the bridge of Tol-in-Gaurhoth onscreen. Benedict Cumberbatch would make a great Sauron, if only to pay homage to Peter Jackson's version of Middle Earth.🙂
Thank you so much for making this. It got me back into LOTR lore, and I've spent the last few days reading, and loving it. Also, excellent editing. Made it so easy to follow, especially your use of the maps. Bravo!
I don't think PJ intended for us to think that the Eye of Sauron was literally him but rather the magical way he is able to see out from his tower using whatever evil devices. It's a great prop for Sauron's gaze. Sauron's gaze is upon us! - meaning he knows about us, he is worried about what we are doing and he is sending forces to stop us rather than Sauron is literally stood in front of us right now and staring at us.
7:00 I was gonna say "oh you forgot to say it was only for her hand in bla bla bla" but then i remember this is the one of the few place everyone probably knows what happened and it just makes me so happy
Thank you "nerd" (and I mean this as a big compliment) for such a great insight into the LOTR lore. As someone that knew nothing more than the story from the films, this made me realise how Amazon's show completely deviates from the original story. Although it's entertaining, it's also terrible that someone has given the writers green light to butcher such a great story. I could understand if they had no source material (GOT example), and I could even understand if they had to omit parts that could be less relevant, but they've completely changed it. It seems to have nothing to do with LOTR except character and places names. Buuuuuu Amazon!!!

@@grayden4138 I was speaking of the events of The Return of the King, not the Last Alliance. but yes, he got too cocky and left the safety of his fortress even though he could have easily waited out the siege.
You both right, but let’s not forget that if valor didn’t cheat by asking eru to intervene when Sauron swayed numenor to wage war on them, the war of a last alliances and everything that happened after that would’ve taken an entirely different form.
If only this had been used as a background story for Amazon's The Rings Of Power series. Great job with putting together this narrative from many different sources!
If only they cared enough to not make a terrible fanfic series.
There's a lot of flexibility within what has already been written.
But showrunners are too impatient to let stories build up.
Peter Jackson's vision 'created' millions of fans of The Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings, Amazon could only create millions of critics of the abomination it created. So, clearly, there's ample room for a future director who shares Jackson's evident love of the lore to step forth and do better. (Couldn't do any worse anyway).
Sauron: Has awesome epic story of driven evil where he corrupts the world to outdo evil the god of evil
Rings of Power: Hey lets make Galadriel/Sauron fanfic where he acts like a weird soap opera character and basically an average Joe
I love that this is kind of narrated like a history channel documentary.
Also your Gollum is so good
pretty sure its just a clip from Andy Serkis reading the Hobbit audiobook
Even if we talked about Sauron for hours and listened to his story for hours, I wouldn't get bored. The most iconic evil character in all fantasy universes.
In addition to being a great reformer who would bring law and order in a scenario of cultural decay after the War of Wrath, I think Sauron saw himself as a Promethean figure who would lift Humanity out of cultural prehistory and technological ignorance: The Silmarillion says that the men of the East and South built cities of stone and had access to metallurgical knowledge.
And bringing economic benefits: he proved himself a good economist in Númenor by multiplying the Island's wealth.
Furthermore, he had to see himself as a deity of a great world unification: a single theocratic government, a technocratic political-economic system and a religious reformer to bring true belief through dogmatic ideas.
A Emperor of some sort, one could say ;^)
Would've been Pax Mordoria
That is the very reason he is evil
In The Occupants of LOTR story
He wants one world order that bends to his will, and not let all of them advance of their own free will.
At the end of the day
It was just A clash of interest and conflict of intentions in wich beyond the existing moral standards there
The Winners of the struggle where painted as the winners and the Good side lol.
I repeat "Beyond Moral Standards"
So you can Pass What I am saying as Bullshit and just do whats right.
Or Relate it, Take it to heart, and stsrt a rebellion in your country as an advocate of FREE WIILL😂 and fail miserably like this sad fool
Who goes By the Name. Wich Shall Not Be SPokEn HAHAHAHA
The perfect Dictator-God.
You keep on making this comment in multiple videos. This is not normal.
I read all Tolkien books as a non-native English speaker when I was a kid and I was proudly thinking that I knew quite a lot about the lore. Watching your videos made me admire Tolkien once more and brutally showed me how little I actually understood his words. Thank you. Off to reading them again I guess.
your English is terrible, I can understand why you didn't gain much from reading the books!
Its amazing how just someone simply delivering the source material is more compelling and a better story than Rings of Power could ever hope to be.
This one video is more faithful and respectful to Tolkien's work. Truly a treasure above the billion-dollar Amazon series.
he should be the screenwriter
That billion-dollar is pretty good tho. I wish it stayed true to Tolkien's lore 😭😭😭
Thank you. Truly.
Tobad you cant read. Ha!
I'm so obsessed with this universe there's so much lore
These videos make it so much easier for me to follow the events of the legendariun
J.R.R Tolkien is the best writer of all time. He has the perfect amount of mystery and depth to his characters. Makes the mind just wonder.
How do we know that Sauron hated imperfection beyond all things?
@@luudest The reason why he joined Melkor was that he loved order and hated wastefull friction as Tolkien says. And such things are the result of Melkors corruption upon the earth
@@oguzhanenescetin5702 thx 👌
Best Tolkien lore/etc out NERD OF THE RINGS ain't even a question!!
Thanks so much!!
Lotr: great, but not utterly exceptional story made incredible by the worldbuilding and Tolkiens pure chad style and language skills
Silmarillion: the definitive epic history. Absolute masterclass in how to make a world feel like a legendary tale
We got Tom Bombadil, one of the namesless things, and got to see Sauron up close and personal. Things i thought I'd never see, but in my mind.
You are from another league concerning the storytelling of Tolkien. Amazing!❤ Also helps out since I started reading the Silmarillion lately.
I appreciate your videos so much but even more incredible is you using artwork from real artists and crediting them, this is really appreciated!
Very nice compilation. This only reflects your dedication and love for the professor's work.
incredible rendition of this facet of Tolkien's history. Wonderful!
What I love about the power scales in LOTR: Sauron, powerful as he is, is merely the equivalent of an ant compared to his master, Melkor.
Thanks for your work. I havn't read the books, and it helps me understanding Tolkien's verse a lot, as why some fans are that disappointed by the current RoP show.
Fantastic work. It is so great to see the puns moving to have a better understanding of the timeline and the actions.
That sauron impression was bang on as i hear him.
Dude I love these videos, readings the books and the history is all good, but it's so cool to see it explained in a video, it's even way cooler with the artwork! 😊
8:43 Shout-out to the dog (Huan?) that just straight up beat Sauron in (almost) single combat. I had never heard that story, that's absolutely insane.
After watching this explanation of Sauron, I was hooked on all videos created by Nerd of the Rings. They’re awesome….
Finally, a worthy video to fall asleep to. My sleep will be legendary!
I really like this Sauron Compilation!
i cant get over the fact that sauron got clapt by a good boy, Huán the Hound was a badass.
What an *OUTSTANDING* video!
Thank you!!
All the dude wanted was to get his rug back.
I was so engaged in this video, thank you for such an amazing experience.
Such black speech in one video will surely bring us darkness.. The enemy, The great eye, the darkness, The dark lord, murderer of Finrod, most evil of servants...Great job Mellon. Hope all is well. Remember, in your darkest hours...you are not alone.
wooow was playing BDO and watching this and for real thought that andy was speaking in video has to go back and see GREAT impression bro!!!!!!
I rarely have the focus lately, to watch things like this on Yt, but you nailed it! It seems like it lasted for only 10 mins.
Watching this while building the LEGO Barad-ur. Amazing video!
Whenever I listen to these stories, I have to remind myself this wasn’t part of real-world history but Tolkien’s fictional universe. It’s just so good and so real!
They may not be true historically, but psychologically they are real stories...
It really says something about the strength that Tolkien saw in men that Denethor was able to resist Sauron while Sarumon was not. It's sad that the movies do not treat mankind with the same reverence.
Wow !!! That was awesome!!! Absolutely beautifully executed.
This video is better than the amazon show the ring of power.
If only this were high praise...
The show seems to date hop back and forth between events, and isn't very consistent, plus way too many stories going on and it feels like season 2 was just a build up to the siege of Eragion.
I'm only here because of the Rings of Power.
"While this development is not ideal for Sauron, his plans march on."
Sauron's ability to adapt to things not going his way is admirable despite the fact that he is one of the villains.
In both movie triologies especially Ian McKellen as Gandalf but in some scenes also Christopher Lee as Saruman, excellently portrait how deeply traumatized even the Istari are from all the events layed out here. The horrors of these times haunt them.
I wish they did movies about these
What an excellent chronicling of the history of Sauron and middle earth!
At what point was he on a raft in the ocean?
Rings of power is a great show
And when was he trying to rizz up Galadriel?
It’s nice they changed some bits otherwise you would know exactly what’s going to happen
LOL
That show is the worst
@Webxhed great show
Excellent overview video. Excellent visual work. As someone who recently has read the silmirilion and unfinished tale,
Maybe if Amazon watched this they would not have destroyed their show and not follow any lore
I could watch these and learn all day. But when I try to read the books the names just mess with my head and I can’t keep up. Visual learner👍🏼👍🏼
So technically sauron killed himself by not killing gollum 😂
Why do you hate American?
Why is it your channel description?
Lol
Good Guy Gollum
Check out the AI wolf jaws on the right at 4:28 lol. seems to have a set of Alien jaws and a tooth pointing upwards. Pro art right there.
Nerd, did you play middle earth shadow of mordor and war games? It's weird you didn't review them yet!
Thank you so much for making this. It got me back into LOTR lore, and I've spent the last few days reading, and loving it. Also, excellent editing. Made it so easy to follow, especially your use of the maps. Bravo!
People call Sauron a shallow villain, but they never take into account the fact that he couldn't perceive depth (hehe, get it? ONE EYE)
This is written better than ROP
This is very interesting I just bought the audiobook of the first book but I wanted to hear the prequel first
💙💙💙 keep doing what you do bro we are here for it 🔥🔥🔥
This is one of the best historical videos I have ever seen. And. Factually… found great job man!!!! Loved it
Thinking about the Eye of Sauron I can draw only one conclusion. CBS Broadcasting must be under Sauron's control.👁️🗨️
This video is essential watching for making some sort of sense of these grand and numerous events.... Thank you!
Someone should make a trilogy ablout these writings.
