Basically the last tip is open shoulders and close shoulders concept. What you need are open shoulders, open shoulders are when your arms are behind your head and close shoulders are hands in front of your head. When you swing, you want to imagine that your hand and your head are in race to reach the floor and you want your hands to win. Hence, a. Keep your chin slightly tucked. Look down slightly and focus on the floor before jumping b. Swing really fast c. Jump backwards d. When your arms reach your ears, keep your leg straight by flexing your hamstring. (keep everything tight) e. When you reach your handstand, pop with your shoulders and snap. Here you have a correct and less painful back hand spring which utilises your shoulder instead of your wrist and elbow.
Man you did it right! I made a mistake that I started training this with one leg kicking up instead of jumping with both together. Now I can't get rid of it and all my attempts are way too crooked to be called back handspring. I gotta relearn this form the beginning I guess. Hey man, great video. I've learnt my backhandspring using the same method but the only problem I have is that my one slants to the left even though I'm looking all the way back. Any tips?
This is a big issue that takes time to fix but I think you should work your flexability and if you have good overhead mobility then it will help. Make sure you have good mobility to do the backhandspring. But I guess it tough to do it prefectly straight but I think having a spotter can help fix it or pratice some backbend if you can get that flexiblity down because it can help straight your backhandspring and help with getting going backwards. But if you keep praticing you will fix it just keep recording yourself and see how much you progress and you will do it just keep trying because it worst that will happen you stop trying and then give up ad quit do it. You need have the right movation and keep trying and pratice some handstands that always helps as well get used to being on your hands. Try not twist your body and keep it straight the entire way.
I noticed your hands are quite apart during the first flying phase. As you’re jumping back, wouldn’t sticking your arms by your ears put less pressure on the wrists and make pushing off the floor easier? :)
Totally agree! It always bugs me when I see them, potentially a mobility issue for me, I just brute force my way through which is bad practice haha, thanks for the comment! I should have mentioned it in the video as well!
I have the shoulder alignment issue as soon as I do it without a spotter because I’m afraid and just stop reaching my arms back in the middle of the skill. I am technically capable of doing it on my own but I’m always landing with my head on the floor 😶
Keep trying and push through the fear maybe keep trying with a spotter and as you get confident they will losse the grip more and more until you can just 100% do it without them but let them watch you just in case you fall and they can catch you or you can try the backhandspring on a mat with a spotter as well.
If you want to fix your backhandspring make sure to keep praticing and keep trying because it will help you understand and recording yourself helps as well. Make sure you are not looking over your shoulder and try to keep your head straight look ahead try to spot an object ahead of you and look at it as long as you can and after your arms behind you then look back behind you. Don't twist your body to the side try to keep it straight the entire way through.
Sorry I realise you posted this 7 months ago I missed it 😔 have you made progress? With bent legs issue I try to push off my feet but then imagine I'm keeping my feet as close to the ground as possible until my hands touch down. Then I whip them round. Trying to 'trail' my legs back by the floor gives me a bigger arch and more whipping room. 🤞👊
It's such a common one! Can you work on the jumping into handstands to build up the strength for it? Sometimes it's not even a strength problem its just 'bracing' for the impact at the right time. Hope you get them soon 🙂
Try to think about whipping your legs like trail that stays in straight line and push your toes as you fall back in the jump and push your shoulders and bent your elbows a little bit once your hands touch the ground. Make sure to land on the balls of your feet and bent knees a little bit and straight your legs on the rebound part.

You should jump backwards in your backhandspring so you can get power into it because you jump too high then it mess up your backhandspring.
my bhs goes sideways always ... don't know how to fix it..literally take your BHS and do like 70 degrees to a side
