The ODR-1 has been something of a secret weapon among guitar players over the years. It’s long been the tonal weapon of choice for Nashville’s top session players - like Tom Bukovac - and in recent years it’s started to break out and become one of the main stompboxes in discussions about transparent overdrives.
I’ve owned the ODR-Mini for a few years now, and love it - it's affordable (around $79/€79), it's built like a tank, it always adds the right amount of sparkle and grit to my tone without changing the character of my guitar and amp too much, and it can also rock with the best of them when you dime the gain too! However, I’ve always wanted to try the ODR-1 BC too. This model features an internal Bass Cut switch to remove any unwanted low end, and Nobels say it should work particularly well with humbucker-equipped guitars.
Time to put that to the test! In this video, I compare the ODR-Mini against its bigger brother - using a loop played on the single coil bridge pickup of my Fender Telecaster - to see how close they sound, and what difference the bass cut makes. Next, I test the ODR-1 BC on its own using a loop played on the bridge humbucker of my Epiphone Les Paul.
Here are some links to the various playing samples and info bits:

My setup was as follows: I ran the pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loops. Here’s some links to those bits of gear:

What, only three timestamps this week?! Crazy:

02:14 Single coil loop comparing both pedals
06:02 Humbucker loop with just the ODR-1 BC
Enjoy!
I know a lot of people go crazy over the old 90s one, but I think the mini and new one sound great too. Don’t get me wrong, if I had the 90s one I’d use it all the time, but these two are great. Also recently i saw the new one used at 18v instead of 9v and felt it subtly made it sound more like the original - in a blind comparison too so not just placebo
Both sound freaking incredible. My favorite overdrive. I need two!!
Yeah, having both is of course the best of both worlds as well 😎 And they're cheap enough to do that! They stack beautifully too... go for it, I say!
I have Nobels ODR Mini, which I successfully bought on the occasion. I could not purchase the full version of Nobels ODR-1 in Russia and was worried that she would lose by sound to her big brother at the expense of SMD elements on the circuit board, but this did not happen. I only regret that my version does not have the ability to reduce low frequencies if necessary...
Thank you! Great review! You did everything right when you showed these two pedals and it's also right that you did it on the Alder Telekaster and mahogany Lespol because the red derv guitar itself has a lower tone spectrum than the alder guitar and this should be taken into account already in each specific case in practice!
A really nobel sounding overdrive! I'll see myself out!
You left some sarcasm behind, is it ok if I use it?? I love that stuff
@@PooNinja Sure, why not?
Ha ha, you guys! I certainly felt very distinguihed while playing it.
@@RichWordsMusic Good!
Did you use my silk suit advice on packing light, did ya get any cool souvenirs?
Mmm I’ve been looking at the mini , but the bass cut full-size unit is pretty intriguing.
He he, in the end I didn't pack any silk, but went thrift shopping to see if I could find any there... no dice :( Next year! Otherwise all I got was this pedal. I went round all the local used guitar stores looking for a bargain too, but nothing to be found. Perhaps other NAMMers got there first!
I'm yet to really get into the BC model, but I do think that little switch could be a godsend for all humbucker-equipped heavier rock players! And it's really not much pricier than the Mini... just chunkier!
The Limited Edition metallic paint version is closest to the original 90's version for some reason. This has the BC too which I thought was a bit over done.
Oh, I've seen the limited one recently online... looks very cool. Interesting to hear that it's closer to that 90s sound... might have to try and track one down! Thanks for watching :)
I had a silver Nobels ODR-1 from the 2000's and then suffered through a house fire and lost many things including that pedal. I was extremely disappointed to see how outrageous the things are pricing. I just want my pedal back.
I'm really sorry to hear that, Michael. At least you are OK. I sympathize with you on the pricing, though - I've had my eye out for some older Nobels pedals for a while, and the prices are crazy high! Hope you manage to get another one day :)
I have the mini. I don't like the very clicky footswitch. For me thereunder is similar enough not to need to change, apart from the click.
👍🏻👍🏻
Cheers for watching as ever!
The one to compare to is the nordlander
I totally agree! That's on my list to try soon too :)
obligatory comparison with the Tone City Nobleman
Oh yes, that one's got to be done soon!
@@RichWordsMusic I'm pretty much set with a triple combo of Tone City Blues Man, Bad Horse, Kaffir Lime - not sure if I need the Nobleman but would still love to hear your opinion 🙂
@@quiksilver78 I will endeavor to get some Tone City pedals in to try then! As we've talked about before, it's high on my list :) Maybe I should do some kind of 'affordable mini board' project, and they'd be ideal for that!
