The best new 2025 Ibanez basses: Multi-scale fanned fret, Talman 5-string + more with Tommy Lee Depp
Today, I’m joined by bass master Tommy Lee Depp to take a first look at the Ibanez 2025 bass lineup, including the Ibanez Bass Workshop EHB5MSBSP 5-string fanned fret multi-scale in Midnight Arctic Ocean Matte, the super affordable offset Talman TMB425B 5-string in Black Flat, the stunning BTB945 in Cosmic Blue Low Gloss, and the premium, made-in-Japan SR3505 Prestige in Black!

The 2025 Ibanez bass range includes a multitude of new models of all different shapes, sizes, colors and styles, so Tommy and I picked out four models that we think really showcase the best of the launch. Naturally, Tommy is coming from his perspective as a pro bassist, and I’m the opposite - a guitar player on the lookout for a bass to add to my collection for recording, playing, and possibly even play live with at some point.
First up is the monstrous Ibanez Bass Workshop EHB5MSBSP. This multi-scale, fanned fret 5-string is as modern as basses get - and pretty alien for someone who’s used to your standard Fender Precision and Jazz basses!
The EHB5MSBSP is a true all-rounder for the contemporary bassist who wants pro quality for stage and studio at a not too painful price point (the launch pricing is $1,999/€1,899). It has a pair of Fishman Fluence pickups with a 3-band Fishman EQ, single coil split mode and a three-way Voice Select switch.
The bass is also surprisingly light, thanks to its basswood body, pale moon ebony top and the 9-piece panga panga/walnut neck (which features graphite reinforcement rods). For ultimate playing comfort, the multi-scale neck takes you from 33” at the 1st string to 35” at the 5th string, and you get 24 medium stainless steel frets. You also get rock solid appointments like Schaller S-Locks strap pins, and it comes with a gig bag too.
Next up we have the more slightly more traditional Talman, although the TMB425B is a 5-string model in satin Flat Black. This is a load of bass for a great price - the launch pricing is $499/€449 - and simply looks built to rock! Here, you get a Dynamix P and J pickup for classic bass sounds in any style, alongside an okoume body and a 34” scale roasted maple neck with an ebanol fretboard.
As well as being a great choice for a beginner player, I feel the Talman may be a top choice for a guitar player looking to take steps into bass territory - and there’s a 4-string version available too!
Next up is the 5-string BTB945, and this is another real all-rounder. Coming in at $1,399/€1,349 at launch, the BTB945 is equipped with a pair of Nordstrand Big Single pickups and it features 24 medium stainless steel frets on its 35” scale neck-thru-body construction. The body is okoume/ash, and the 5-piece neck is maple/walnut with a rosewood board.
Finally, we take in the top of the range Prestige SR3505. This Japan-made 5-string is top of the line and has everything any pro bassist needs for a lifetime of superlative performance. This is reflected in the appointments and the $2,399/€2,299 launch price!
The SR3505 features an ash body and a 5-piece maple/walnut neck with a rosewood fingerboard housing 24 medium frets. Tones come from two Nordstrand Big Single Coils and an Ibanez Sonitech preamp with 3-Band EQ, plus a three-way mid frequency switch with Hexa Mid system.
So, if you’re looking for a new bass in 2025, hopefully this video will give you some food for thought on which is the best value for you and your needs. Let me know which bass was your favorite in the comments!

NUX 63 Diamond Overdrive | Turn your amp into a Vox AC30 for $50! Review & Demo
I liked B and C best, maybe, oh, I dont know, its so hard just ell me which is the most expensive and ill dream about it and go buy the Behringer. Edited after the reveal, it just goes to show I have cheap taste then, will defo be buying the Behringer.
17:06 Muchly is a word in my language lmfaoo it means fish XD
to my ear, the Talman sounded the best. Tighter and more focused.
Talman 405 is a beast, and the 425 is basically the same bass!
Send them over.. I need to try them! :D The EHB5MSBSP and the SR35005.. damn.. The BTB945.. tbh don't like the blue. I have the BTB806MS and the TGF colouring beats this blue-ish. IMHO the only thing that is missing in this lineup is a Fretless 6, since the Portamento (SRF706) seems to be discontinued.
Eric Clapton spent half of the Cream reunion concerts on the middle pick-up.
12:11 he did it.
I'm a big fan of rat pedals. Speaking from my experience, a Rat pedal rarely needs to be boosted but most of the time it need an eq. In that regard, the basscut of the Timmy works well in this demo. I prefer to put an od after the rat. So, I find this way to create the gainy tone I like: I run a rat dialed as a boost, in Klon clone, in a edge to break up amp.
I thought A and C were the best I was happy with B but not C I think it had too much bass....so I will go with B because of price 😊
Going to need a more than just one capture to get as much diversity as the pedals can give you. Keep in mind that people's captures are apart very different in gear used, etc.... Captures and modeling are pretty different technologies
Hi sir, can u demo the bass with both pickups on? Correct me if I'm worng, i think u demo the basses with front pickup only😊😊
Im totally enamored with the Revstar line-up. Ive never even seen one in person. This was a great comparison for a dude like me. Ive also got it in my head that the Godin Radiator would be a contender in this hotrod race. Either way, both companies deliver high quality gear for unbeatable prices. Hard to go wrong, i feel.
Dear Ibanez, we *NEED* guitars made in through neck construction like that BTB945, please do a RGRT421 with a locking trem, and in a clear coat as colour option. Pretty please?
Henning is knowledgeable, talented, and it's nice of him to collab. But his distracted, wandering, weird "jokey uncle" style is counter to what I enjoy your channel for: Thorough reviews that are concise, thoughtful and don't stray far from why the viewer clicked. We want the presenter's personality, but when it feels "about them" I find it off-putting and padded out.
The blue one
Blue is always a solid foundation for a choice!
I'm getting the Behringer, spraying it Orange and putting my DIY Colorsound Power Boost in there with it.
Thanks again for inviting me to make this video with you, that was really fun :)
Cheers Tommy, and thank YOU for taking the time! This was loads of fun and I will probably acquire at least one of these basses this year ;) See you soon!
Cheers from a bass player! Nice overview! I'm waiting for the day when Ibanez brings back the ATK basses, they were so iconic and cool, and the world is definitely ready for this!
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it. Yep, I know the ATK basses... sure, I think it's time for them to earn a comeback as well. There's always room for some slightly different designs, and it would be another slightly more 'retro' design for Ibanez these days. Hopefully they read this and do it ;)

hahaha subscribed! loved the interaction and ... man !!! you have nerves of stainless steel because who wants a steel that stain etc etc
Thanks for sharing a great video! I'm just wondering. How's the neck profile of the new AZ standard line?? Is it the same as premium and prestige's Oval C?? Ibanez website says 'AZ oval c' for the premium and prestige but just 'AZ' for the new standard.
15:44 that's what I like about Ibanez and some other brands. The cheap instruments they sell are still good instruments. Unlike some other brands we could name.
This is the most detailed and comprehensive guitar comparison demo I have ever watched. Thanks a lot!
Absolutely wonderful test, really helpful too. I was definitely the most drawn to C, though in some cases it sounded a bit thin. A was my least favourite just too wooly for my taste, and B and D both had great moments and short bits that didn't sound quite as nice to me. I didn't try to guess which was which because honestly, I'm not worried about which name is on the box. XD Knowing what they are now, it's very interesting to me. C definitely would have the room to adjust for that thinness I heard. The ToneX sounded great, but when the fuzz was really pushed it sort of retained more of the clean signal under the fuzz to my ears. That could be desirable depending on preference, but is also probably not how the fuzz is supposed to work and could be a pain if someone really didn't want that defined sound coming through.
I got every one of them wrong! Yeah, the digital pedal sounds surprisingly good. I have ordered a Behringer Fuzz Bender - last I heard, the place I ordered from didn't have it in stock, but I hope to get it soon; can't wait!
They're listed as actual flame maple tops. I enjoy y'all but if you're incorrect about the veneer that's a pretty major bit of misinformation.
Well it all depends on what guitar with pickups and tone controls... every guitar sounds different so every pedal will sound different with any guitar.
I have one that comes from Thomann, just like this!.. I didn't know the instrument, but it seems to me that mine has a percussive tone only with very little support, but very little (too much!) Looking at the video it doesn't seem that short to me and just percussive.. I would like to understand if perhaps there is something wrong with mine with the pickups.. The sound is deaf, only at the beginning does it have a voice, as if it were only percussive... I don't know if I can explain, as if the tone was at its lowest and almost all the frequencies were missing... Maybe it's just that I'm not used to that type of sound, but even by adding distortions, it changes little: it's as if the sound were ultra-compressed.. I ask everyone for help! Thank you for your solidarity
The behringer is definitely the best looking pedal of the bunch
A and D
Keeley is phenomenal. Thnx for the review. Rusty fuzz is also pretty dark, but it is more versatile, so I'm gonna stick with it ✌️
How about if I write which letter I liked with zero context? That'll probably be useful to nobody. /sarcasm But yeah, cool demo. Thanks.
As much as I hate to admit it (since I just bought that Ibanez), the humbuckers on the Fender sound better. They just seem fuller and have less of a "bite," especially on those indie rock and Strokes-type sounds @15:46, You might be able to EQ that stuff out, but I think the point is that the Fender just sounds better without needing to. This was a very nice and thorough comparison, though. You gained a sub here. Much appreciated!
I dont care what is the best, I want them all!❤
thank you Rich - i have the OG odr-1 mini, but like you it was to phat. However your demo convinced me to order an ODRmini2!😎😎 to my ears, it appears that turning up the drive circuit imparts some HPF to the overall pedal tone....🤘 bass totally roll off test(more details): full @17:24, full with less drive @18:25 10 o'clock @17:37 (sounds more scooped here), 10oclck with less drv@18:37 noon @17:49, 2 o'clock @18:02, 2 o'clck with less drv@18:50 off @18:15, off with less drive @19:02
what is the nut material? Ibanez website doesn't say anything so I assume it's plastic (???)
I don’t hear much difference. Would just depend on stage requirements. Otherwise meh. I run the rat alone.
He doesn’t like him.
14:36 🤣
Amazing demo! And the guitar is very light! That's exactly what I'm looking for.
Very informative & more importantly, hilarious 😅👍🏾
Thanks a lot, glad you enjoyed! Having Henning in a video always makes it more fun ;)
Why do lots of bands have two guitar players? Because: one can play the most beautifull chords (and rythms), and the other can play the most beautifull solos (and melodies). This gives an original song the right vibration. As ofcourse do the bass player and the drummer. But somehow we all play an Ibanez.
Yes, exactly... it's all part of the musical atmosphere that makes great music and bands. Being the guitarist in a band with only one guitar it is certainly much trickier to fill the space. But yes... at the end of the day you'll see an Ibanez on most stages ;) They make wonderful guitars and basses, that's why! Cheers and rock on!
Nice comparison of these Ibanez guitars! Unfortunately I always chose the expensive ones.... but it is the right decision.
Thanks Robert! Hey, if you try them out and the expensive ones happen to be the guitars that speak to you personally... they're the right ones :) Nothing wrong with that at all! Cheers and rock on!
I like the blue chameleon guitar better. I am into more Metal and Rock and i like that ones sound a bit better. I might be cheating on my Fender for an Ibanez geo 😂 this is a new one for me. It kinda reminds me of my old Yamaha RGX112
Here we have a matter of knit picking. When and if these models of guitars are recorded in a song with effects in a range of musical styles will you hear it? Will you care? No, because the song sounds good.
Yep, in a mix or live these differences will be way more subtle. And, of course, 99% of the audience won't be listening for those subtitles in the guitar tone. Still, for us as players it can make a difference, and that's why we do it I guess ;) Some bits of gear simply make us have more fun and be more confident as players...
@@RichWordsMusic after 40 years of playing I learned a lot. If it feels and sounds good to you then it is good. You rock btw.
Great video
Cheers Howard, glad you enjoyed it!
After pontificating about knowing chords, he misnamed a Dm add9 chord as a Dm9 (yes music nomenclature is obnoxious but they are two completely different chords)
See, if I'd known my theory I could have admonished HP during the video there! Shame on me I guess ;) But that's actually one of the reasons why I find some theory quite intimidating...
The size of the trem block doesn’t add sustain not according to material science or acoustics.
With this guitar I think most people will be blocking it off anyway. That's another topic where I have limited knowledge and should look into it more!
