Small Pedals Big Sound

- Today I am showing you that size of pedal does not have anything to do with size of tone. Size of pedal ≠ Size of tone. Pedal size ≠ Tone size. I prove it as I show you some of my favorite small pedals. In the comments below let me know your thoughts about Salad Days and any music that is new to you even if it's old to the world.

The PolyTune Mini is my favorite-sounding pedal.
ravenpascal aww fuck you beat me to the punch.
If you hold in the footswitch as you power it on, and then say Rumplestiltskin three times, it enters a buffered/boost mode, which gives you Haunting Mids. Just a nice 'easter egg' from TC.
Of all my pedals, that one definitely makes me sound the best.
thirtytwobars that is techically correct
Yeah, the best distortion pedal in da market....
I just realised that, with that red t-shirt, you look like an older version of Scott Pilgrim
Dan VS hahaha funny observation.
you just ruined me the enjoyment of this channel. thank you sir.
I always thought he looked like the Brother of Jack Black's roommate in School of Rock.
Josh Scott Pilgrim
I wonder if Josh can play the bass line from Final Fantasy 2?
I really wanted to see Josh play these tiny pedals with a ukulele through a lunchbox amp. lol
The Lunchbox is no joke though
Now we're talking! 👍
Or one of those tiny Les Paul guitars that Van Halen used.
"You walk through the wardrobe of tone."
Brian Wampler, you owe Josh $1000 for his marketing genius.
Come on Brian, your competitor is doing you PR. Pick up your game!!
To be fair, I don't think there is any competition in the pedal industry. Especially considering how they all seem to be friends, and they are making identical copies of the same thing.
That, and JHS did put EVERYONE's version of a Tube Screamer into the Bonzai.
You should do an episode where you show underrated pedals, and then do another with overrated pedals
A JHS demo of underrated pedals would only be accurate for the first few minutes after uploading.
He's too nice to do overrated pedals
Legit barely 2 weeks after posting great pedals under 50$ the reverb pedal I wanted to buy jumped to 70$
And somehow the boss metal zone would be on both lists lol
He loves everything, he's not gonna call anything overrated.
This channel is going to cost me an absolute fortune. That you not only produce wonderful pedals yourself, but advertise your closest ‘rivals’...and make us realise some of the more affordable lines are very good too...you are the master enabler Sir!
Hey everyone! Please check out the full description for info on the gear in this episode, our JHS Show Website, our new Patreon page, and links to gear and the record in Record Time. Thanks for watching!
Wait, last week was BIG pedals, this week is SMALL pedals.....I can't wait for the medium pedal
I've been digging the new Sturgill Simpson, not a guy I had listened to before. Wondering, have you ever heard of The Grifters? Post grunge band from the mid-90s. Seeing some of your musical taste I think you might dig them.
Are you familiar with the Schaffer replica by SoloDallas?
I just discovered a Canadian band I'm digging right now called the Sheepdogs. They've been around since late 2000's I believe but the album I've been listening to is Learn & Burn. Big blend of classic rock influences.
+1 for the Mythos Golden Fleece
The Mac Demarco album named "2" is even better! Go listen.
I agree, 2 is a masterpiece to me
Hugo Carvalheiro my favourite demarco
Robson Girl is a jam! Makes me think of summer
Yea man that’s my favorite of his and probably even one of my favorite albums ever
You mean the guy who wants to burn all pedals in a pyre?
Pedal Idea: make a JHS “brown sound” pedal that teams well with the Whitey Tighty, and call it the Baggy Browny 🤗😂
Michael Best and it could have a viable voltage “sag” option. That would be perfect
Zachary Petty or possibly even “bagginess”? 🤔🤷🏻♂️😂
Or the racing stripe
Brown sound + whitey tighty= Laundry
Full Load
Mac Demarco is great. I think 2 is his best album, should definitely listen if you are into crazy/wacky sounds and riffs. Close behind is This Old Dog which is more of a recent release. Alternatively, that album is more intimate and acoustically driven but still feels just as fresh as Mac Demarco has sounded and imo is mixed very well.
You missed the chance of saying "its many mini pedals".
shoot out the last two episodes: biggest and smallest possible board with just 5 pedals.

2. Check out some Battles, Sweet Trip, Fishmans and Jai Paul
3. Please check out some bananana effects. Weird you don't know about them, they are the most big sounding pedal brand in small package.
Mac Demarco has been such a huge inspiration and pioneer in the indie scene and has really inspired a new wave of sound and artist (myself included)! I smiled so big when the record of the day was Salad Days! amazing colorful sounds and catchy songs! Don't forget to listen to the rest of his music, you wont regret it!
Check out Type O Negative, October Rust
new old band: Failure. I am puzzled why this didn't cross my path 25 years ago.…
If you like Failure, be sure to check out Pinback.
Salad Days has my all-time fav Mac song, Treat Her Better. I like This Old Dog better overall, but it's only a hair ahead of Salad Days for me :)
I might be showing my incompetence here, but the first ever pedal I bought back in high school was a Donner Chorus pedal, it was small, $35 and I used it for like 4 years because it had some really good settings. I think if you’re looking for the basics in an effect, Donner has some good options
Jake Custer I absolutely agree. Donner has some great stuff for a very reasonable price.
I've got a Donner wah pedal. It's small and it falls over if you step on it too quickly. But it sounds great, and the price couldnt be fairer
I was thinking of possibly getting the Donner 5 band EQ until I can afford a Guyatone 8 band EQ
Correct me if I'm wrong.
¿ I don’t know all that much about EQs, but Donner has some coupons here and there if you use their website, so if you get it at the right time, you could even save some money on it
I picked up one of their fuzz pedals for like $10 during the amazon prime sale this summer and have been pleasantly surprised with what it can do, turns out cheap doesn't always equal bad.
When do we get to see Josh's personal board? OR is it just the wall behind him.
Allan Kaufman he did a vid on it I think..he’s got an even tide,a couple of JHS,a morning glory.. definitely saw it on one of the vids
If you could fit it on the screen the pedals would look like dots
Opening chords of the Tumnus demo... "Bowie's in space. Bowie's in spaAaYace."
It felt pretty freaky
Do you wanna borrow my jumper Bowie?
I’m jamming out with the mickjaggernauts ooo and they think it’s pretty cool man!
What exactly are those ch-ch-ch-changes?
How far-out are you MAN
PLEASE do a looping episode!
Yes! And include the budget end.
Listen to "2" by Mac Demarco, I think it's his best and what really made him into what he is.
agreed on this, "2" is my favorite album by Demarco but I think salad days is a better intro to him for someone who hasn't listened before
Idk if its necessarily "mini" but it has one knob: Earthquaker Devices' Acapulco Gold
That thing is a gain monster
I use mostly mini pedals because I'm cheap and don't want to lug a huge pedal board around. My current favorite is the Mini Spark by TC Electronics.
Its alright to just splurge on a good fuzz distortion overdrive or reverb/delay pedal once awhile 🤷🏻♀️
Music that is new to me: Alan Parsons Project. Really good and well done stuff. Check out the album Eye In The Sky. Easy entry point. But after listening to each album several times, not sure I could pick a favorite.
"the wardrobe of tone" that was good. wampler has some great stuff
Totally! I'm surprised I don't see more Wampler mentioned on this channel
Isn’t Mac Demarco the guy who freaked out, stripped down to his tighty whiteys, then used a lighter to burn all of his chest hair off at some festival?
I have the whitey tightey. Was gonna get the keeley comp. but you’re right. The little underpants is such a cool logo I went with that.
I love the Tumnus and the HOF mini. Own the SL drive by Xotic, which is great. Plan to get the Acoustikar by Mooer and perhaps another mini boost pedal - on the pedaltrain nano plus board there is only room for two regular sized and three mini pedals. Honorable mentions to the MXR carbon copy mini, and MXR mini boost.
Now that You used that Whitey Tighty once. If You don't mind I'd love to do the laundry! Just send it to me! (I don't have money for a new pedal... Please...)
I really like the MXR Phase 95. It's a mini with both a Phase 90 and 45 circuit, each having a modern and script setting. So... Four phasers in one mini format.
And for the bass players... Get yourself an SFX MicroThumpinator. It's an always on filter/buffer. Mine is rigged under my PT Nano+ at the end of my signal chain. It eliminates all those unwanted frequencies and artifacts starting around Bb below the B on your 5 string. This reduces your speaker excursion and helps save some wear and tear on your drivers.
Did I mention it's a killer buffer circuit, too?
Do you listen to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard? Whybnot? I bet you will love it!
Every time I play through polytune mini I have to stop an remind myself how I would sound if I didn’t play through it. Polytune Mini is a tone GOD.
What do you mean? Do you have the 2 or 3? Is it buffered?
Have you ever tried stacking them? That's where the magic is
I assumed Tumnus would be on here and it was first lol. I’m a huge Tumnus fan. It never leaves my board.
Honestly, I love what you are doing Sir
Do you made mini JHS bonsai type pedal??
My favourite minis: Donner Morpher, Phase 95, Any of the Fuzzdog fuzzpups kits, Mooer reecho (in tape mode) wampler mini ego.
How could you not include a few of the HoTone Skyline series pedals? If nothing else, they look kind of cute. And as my daughter told me, when I unwrapped a few of them that she bought me as a gag gift, " You can make them do funny things with their eyes, just like you, Dad".
I like the mini Mooer pedals, especially the Radar cabinet pedal. I have learned to stay away from Mosky really quick because their pedals seem to not last more than a week or two and then they do not want to hold up to their own policies of refunding or replacing. I uploaded a video showing them that half the pedal didn't function on the plexi m pedal. They gave me a line saying they would send out a new pedal. I waited 2 weeks, still nothing I contacted them, they said it was on its way. This went on for nearly 2 months. Nothing ever came, no refund, NOTHING! Stay far away from them.
Only one of those I own is Tumnus, and it's great. It's like instant 90s indie/roots rock in a box. And then it's super versatile as well. I think I'm gonna get one of them there TC Ditto Loopers though. My undergarment of choice is boxer briefs, therefore I have the Keeley Compressor +. It compresses and it's profile is small but not regular jockey brief small. Classy, and the chicks dig it.
Yeah Tumnus, my always on pedal. Yeah got an EP boost too, and a ditto. I’m chuffed that I have a few of the pedals you featured - not usual. I recently bought a Moer reecho- I’m impressed and I own Strymon el capstan and a timeline and a TC alter ego. Thanks always love your show.

Probably a stupid question, but are mini-pedals less good than their full-size counterpart?
"New sounds" to me, because i discovered recently, is Chelsea Wolfe, great great great sounds, Love it!!
Demarco is literally the prince of indie rock. He’s influenced 90% of all modern indie and pop music since 2013
Unfortunately indie died around 2000
😂😂😂💩💩
Oqsy indie’s existence has been a slow constant death, and that is why i love it
Sadly
Oqsy are u kidding me?? That’s literally the only form of real rock that’s out right now.
FIRST
For the fist time in my life
No Joyo Ironman pedals? They are so tiny
fkldosofldsg´sd
I wanted to buy a Klon clone and went to my favorite store to try a Wampler Tumnus. The employee there plugged in a Tumnus, as well as a Belle (Wampler's take on the Nobels ODR1). I was blown away.
I spent 1/2h going back and forth between the 2. I finally chose the Tumnus... and came back 2 weeks later to buy the Belle 🤩
Yes please, a looping episode would be the best thing on the planet.
So cool to see the mini Tumnus on your list! I’m a BIG fan of it. See what I did there? I really like how you do business!
Fruit Bats “Tripper” 2010 album. Fantastic from start to finish. Great songs, great guitar playing, and great use of effects. Check it out!
You gotta listen to:
Sister Irene O'Conner
Number Girl
Yuragi
Superheaven
Fiddlehead
Roosevelt
I've had the HOF mini for a few years and had no idea I could load different reverbs onto it. LoL.
Came for the pedals stayed for the Record Time... very chill! Thanks :D
Thank you for inspiring me to play today. Because sometimes the inspiration just isn't there. Your intelligent humility is refreshing, and the quirky humor makes me laugh out loud... Thanks again :)
Music I just have heared of:
Connie Converse
Vashti Bunyan
The Mona Lisa Twins
Looper episode!!! One sugestion, please include the most interesting looper pedal of ALL time, THE Digitech TRIO Plus. Its such a great thing for us who just never managed to form a band (I did try though). Alone at home and yet you have bassist and drummer on the go + the Looper for 2nd guitar or synth if you have one.
The Tumnus with the gain at 9:00 into an edge of breakup AC15 is my bread and butter rock rhythm tone.
Looping episode? Yes please. There is a lot interesting material I'd like to see you cover. The history of looping. All the various pedals out there and their capabilities, from simple loopers like the Ditto, to complex loopers like the RC300, to the weird loopers like the Chase Bliss Blooper or Montreal Assembly Count to Five.
Maybe have a guest on who can go over some techniques and things to think about such as tones and eq levels that will give you a good mix when overdubbing lots of layers.
Maybe this has been brought up before, but I think not putting that LED smack in the middle of the whitey tighty was a missed opportunity.
"Walk through the wardrobe of tone" needs to be on a t-shirt.
Love the Mooer Yellow Comp, cheap and amazing!
Mac DeMarco got so big he's early sound inspired an entire genre of music known as Bedroom Pop which in turn has had quite an effect on the indie pop/rock scene with bands like Gus Dapperton, Boy Pablo and Clairo.
I've heard Cuco is also a pretty big deal in this scene now
For a second there I read "Boredom Pop".
..though probably not much difference :)
Kidding!...just kidding!
That Mooer reverb pedal also has a freeze feature which is pretty cool and in my opinion makes it worth $60.
6:45 we all think of Susanna Hoff. You're the only one thinking of David Hasselhoff, Josh. The only one. I don't know what else to say about this.
I have to say it: This channel is unique. Josh layers on maximum schmaltz while cutting through the bullshit. Who could resist such a thrilling combo?
I recently became aware of Constantines -- they have a 2003 release called Shine a Light that is pure awesomeness. Young Lions, Insectivora, Nighttime/Anytime are all crazy good tracks.
I have been digging the ultra-cheap ultra-sketchy Mosky pedals...their version of the Klon/Tumnus type thing “Silver Horse” lol made it onto my pedalboard!
Is it weird that I'm super proud to have my old Nobels pedals featured in this episode?
I bet the Tumnus into the ODR1 would be amazing
Bro! All those Chinese mini pedals? The mosky rat? Sho? Eno bmf? Some of them are rad. Some of them sound so close to the boutique pedals they are clones of... the rowin chorus? They sound great and can be had for $17-40. Or you can go fancy. The Mooer Analog delay? It’s real analog lofi delay. It’s great. Sure there are $200 versions cloned by Americans and made with Chinese parts... and I know this probably gets close to sensitive ground- but you did a behringer episode- so why not mention these little guys?
RAASH he mentions them and they are no longer $17-40
You’re not looking in the right place. I bought some for $19 new as recent as a couple weeks ago. Obviously if you buy from certain places they will mark it up 100%+
Picked up a Mosky BC-108 Fuzz Face for $35. Great pedal!
I just started liking demarco too. I have not heard anything but “here comes the cowboy” but I was surprised how much I dig it. You need to listen to Volcano! right now!
I recommend the new DIIV record, specifically Blankenship... I really love how the song is structured-the chorus starts unexpectedly.
I just started liking demarco too. I have not heard anything but “here comes the cowboy” but I was surprised how much I dig it. You need to listen to Volcano! right now!
Try previous albums. They sound quite more interesting imho. "...cowboy" is still good tho
Holy shit listen to “2” its far better
Listen to 2 by far the best album !
I love mac demarco listen to more of his stuff he's a really cool musician a new band that im getting into is a band called death grips
The chord progression that you did for the Mooer Reverb pedal (the last one I believe) I absolutely love it. It so simple but it works
An excellent video, thanks for posting that, Josh!
If you've never tried them before, I'd STRONGLY urge you to check out 2 mini pedals from Rowin: their Plexion and also their Dumbler. The Plexion can go from drive to distortion depending on settings, while the Dumbler is an overdrive pedal.
I love both of them, but the Dumbler is one of my all-time favorites, #2 on my drive list a little behind the Angry Charlie v.2, which is easily my favorite drive/distortion pedal of all time, and I'm an OLD geezer, been playing guitar since 1965, so I've tried a LOT of pedals in my time.
Playing around with volume and tone on the guitar will yield especially great results and sounds great with either single coils or humbuckers. VERY affordable too.
Keep up the great videos. I look forward to Thursday afternoons now specifically because I know you'll be posting something new. :-)
Getting a like just for saying "The wardrobe of tone"
Hey I'd really like you to do and episode of pedals that can take different voltages, 12v, 18v etc
Maybe showcase what changes when you up the voltage. Something like that. I'll let you worry about the script. :-)
Listen to mac`s perform on jimmy fallon show.
Best mini format pedal - Old Blood Noise Endeavors Slider Expression
Check out Mac DeMarcos album this old dog my personal favourite by him
Also checkout Oncle Jazz by Men I Trust. GREAT RECORD!!!!!
If you enjoyed De Marco probably you must give a chance to this band "Nicolas y los Fumadores" from my point of view really simple but really good guitar...
My favorite mini pedal is the MXR Phase 95!!!
(And the Malekko Vibrato)
Watch any interview with Demarco. He’s brilliant.
For Danes, Hof is the age-old name of the basic Carlsberg pilsner beer.
Could you do an episode on solid state amps and if pedals are good with them?
Bands that I've just been getting into in the past year: One Eleven Heavy, Garcia Peoples, Thee Oh Sees, Howlin Rain, Snail Mail, and Mountain Movers. The only mini pedal on my board is the Xotic SP comp but I'd like to try their boost. Also curious about the Whitey Tighty. Check out Dead Meadow for cool fuzz, vibe, etc. Comets on Fire is another one.
I live by Mac Demarco's rule of thumb for jeans "you only need to wash them when they start to smell like pee"
The Puppet Head I dread the day I can afford moving out, because my mum wont do my laundry no more...
Tc HOF was a let down. Sounds great but there’s always this low level/high pitched squeal when engaged.
"Act your age and try another year"! Love it. Never heard of him till now. I'm getting a bit of Ween. Thanks for the turn on Josh. Love your "Record Time". More people should do it.
I'm not sure why, but after listening to Record Time's Mac DeMarco, Salad Days, I went to my CD shelf and picked out Matthew Sweet's Altered Beast, which I haven't to in years...it's a wonderful album, with great guitar and songwriting...what else haven't I listened too in years..? Every time I see/hear it, I want the Beano Boost...
Hard to take recommendations from you when you seem to like everything.
I really want to comment but it says there’s 666 comments and I don’t wanna ruin it...
Wait
Josh, check out “The Dance of Life” by Narada Michael Walden. In particular, the songs “Carry On” and the title track (The Dance of Life).
Mac Demarco is legit. Check out Alex G's new "Hosue of Sugar"
The JhS little black box practically saved my marriage so yea, thanks for that.
Ah actually I have a question about those- I'm looking to get an amp attenuator and I'm trying to decide whether to get the jhs lityle black box (which I think goes in the effects loop) or a "proper" attenuator that goes between the power amp an the speaker. What would be the difference in tone and what are the pros and cons of one or the other?
New name for your Bilt Revelator, the frankenscott since it’s got all the pickups
Alright man, I have to be real for a second. You are da GOAT in the pedal world, hands down. Not only are you a phenomenal resource when it comes to pedals in general, but because you also make the things you also know a TON about the specifics and the technical stuff. To top it all off, you have a great attitude and approach to your craft that opens you up to your audience, keeps you honest about the competition with a lot of sincere respect and admiration for the good work of others etc.
I can’t give you enough praise brother. I’m about to get me some JHS pedals for my board, I’m convinced your judgement and overall philosophy leads to great sounds and great pedals.
Much obliged señor, and keep on rocking.
The emptiness of that shelf in the back is disturbing. I think you need a few more pedals Josh. ❤️
