Yes now I do after writing it down I followed your URL and found your page of checklists
Are you going to add more ??
@@jayteeaitch yes - I write up the checklists for any moderately complex aircraft :)
It's not a massive issue at all, but rather I don't really think the FMC's data being out of date's an issue to do with not having a navigraph subscription (it could be maybe since not got the link software running right now, but I have a navigraph subscription and the FMC says its out of date lol.
Btw love your videos, you take things back to their basics which I really enjoy!
@@jonbeckett Just a quick question the last digits most but the very left digits on the GPS L and R aren't exactly the same, does that really matter at all, though its like one digit different lol.
@@jonbeckettit makes me pay money to get the checklist is that normal
I've watched a wide range of your videos over the last two months or so, and a large part of what I know about MSFS and flying is from you. I just bought the 787-800 and this video is imminently helpful, as always. Thanks!
Thank you! :)
Small tip, unless your first waypoint from take off is within 5 degrees of the runway, LNAV will not be available on the ground. Some pilots will insert a custom waypoint in line with the departure runway so they can engage it and let it manage lateral control sooner during climb outs. Can always head direct to the next original waypoint as planned via the FMC legs anytime. Great tutorial :)
Just wanted to give you a HUGE thank you, I got the 737 last night, I watched tons and tons of videos of starting it up and stuff and none of them made sense to me. Then I watched our video and I got it right away! Thanks for making these tutorials so easy to understand. Thank you!
You're welcome :)
i know nothing about planes at all but this got recommended to me so i clicked on it
Welcome to the channel :)
thanks jonathan!
Please could you tell me your specs and which monitor
Utterly the BEST VIDEO on a plane startup procedure in ALL of UA-cam, IMHO!!! Thanks you so much for sharing your knowledge, you deserve 2 mil subscribers!!! I went to your shop and instead of getting 1 "checklist", I ended up getting 4!!! PLEASE keep the FANTASTIC content coming....I WANT TO LEARN MORE!!!
:) There's a lot more in the aircraft than the checklist covers - it really is the absolute bare bones.
I had literally been working on a lot of subjects like flight control, flight plan, nav aids, comm, approach plates etc. but they never end. You never feel like you are ready to fly this machine if you focus on them a lot. So, today I decided to take a shot and with your great tutorial I did my first take off with 737-700. Thanks a lot. As you said there are a lot of things on this plane to learn.
Thanks a lot for the good work!
You're welcome :)
Thank you very much Jonathan.
Really good tutorial.
I am switching from 320 to 737 and the PMDG has blown me away :)
Your videos really are the best ones out there for learning how to start up a "new" aircraft! Most others are just way to quick, but the way you explain and take it slow just makes it that much easier to understand. So far i've learned all four different ones that i fly from you.
Without JB I would still be flying into mountains. Who I'm I kidding....I was rolling into the airport gate full speed before JB's videos.
Just started using msfs 2020 and pmdg after 7 years of absence this video has been most informative and helpful 👍
Hi Jonathan, thanks for the tutorial. One of the best. Not in a hurry but quiet and clear. In that way it is 100% understandable. Thanks again.
Glad it helped!
9 months after you put this out and I have only just found the need for it! I’m grateful it was here. A great tutorial - thank you 👍🏻🍻
You're welcome :)
That was such a great tutorial. This aircraft was super overwhelming for someone like me who is trying to learn and shy away from the other base aircrafts on the game that more or less do everything for you. Been trying to step outside my comfort zone and try more study level planes. Greatly appreciated mate.
Glad to help :)
try the Fenix a320 😮
Excellent tutorial, very well explained. Yes cold and dark is the best way to learn the systems. Laborious for some office chair pilots, but it does offer immersion, it’s a good habit to acquire. I always enjoy the simplicity slant of your tutorials. Much appreciated, keep up the good work. Very good channel.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Jonathan, excellent tutorial. Got me flying at the first attempt. Very clear and succinct. Now I'm off to watch your tutorial about landing the aircraft.
You're welcome :)
Hey, awesome tutorial there! 😁 There are a few things you forgot to mention though:
1. You didn't mention that you have to turn on the strobe lights before starting to taxi.
2. Another thing is the auto brake setting which has to be put to "RTO" before take-off which you left on the "OFF" setting.
3. The landing lights have to be turned on when you enter the runway and need to be switched off once you passed 10000 feet.
4. Following that, the baro setting needs to be set to "STD" once you passed the aforementioned 10000 feet.
5. You said it in the video but just to add it, the TCAS needs to be switched to "TA/RA" before take-off.
You surely know all of these points but I thought I'd mention these here for next time. Other than that, really well made and easy to understand tutorial. 🙂
This was a purposely shortened procedure that doesn't include everything a real crew would do - I state that several times.
You're actually wrong about a couple of things. Strobes don't go on until you're on the runway in the real world. The last thing aircraft taxiing or ground crew need is to be blinded. Barometric pressure is set to STD as you pass through the transition level - not 10,000ft. The transition level varies all over the world.
@@jonbeckett Right, no problem. As I said, it's all good, just wanted to mention these few things.
And also, thanks for the insight, seems like I got it wrong regarding the strobe lights and the baro pressure. Now I know it better, I'm still learning all the procedures flight by flight 🤓
mate strobe lights go on when you are waiting to get cleared for take off and you need to have auto brakes on max bafoooooon
New subscriber. Just purchased the the PMDG 737-800 and looking forward to following through with your startup video. Been flying MS Flight Sim since MS Flight Sim 2.0 in the 80s
Well done sir. I just picked this airliner up and was totally clueless to it. Printed your checklist and after a few runs I’m up and in cruise. Going to look for how to set up approach and land next. Thank you…
The checklist I did is just a starting point - there are lots more tests and checks you can do :)
Fantastic. Great explanation, clearly I have a tremendous amount to learn the 737-800. I hope you have many videos such as these. Thank you
THANKS I WAS SO CLOSE TO REFUNDING THE PLANE 🙌🙌🙌
thank you for the great tutorial, managed to get my first successful flight completed with no issues. thanks again :)
Thanks, this guide actually really helped me! I just need to rewatch it enough so i can remember the startup procedure : )
If you visit the link in the notes, you can download the procedure and print it out :)
The best explanations and demonstrations anywhere. Thank you!
Cheers!
I dont have MSF, but have gone through FSX and now P3Dv4.5 . Judging by the amount of videos out now, on the PMDG 737 -800, It looks like an awful lot of people are just starting up in Flight sim. There have been hundreds of videos and discussions, on the PMDG 737-800 from start-up to shut down and all its iterations for years. So I find it slightly amusing, that a lot of people have missed out the fun and learning part of this aircraft. Have fun !
I don't quite understand why so many people held back until the 800 was released - the other Boeing 737 models are functionally identical. It is nice to see so many newcomers though.
I just bought this as my first payware plane. Definitely a lot of stuff to learn.
Oh yes :)
Good base to start on. Airbus seems almost unrealistically easy to fly after learning Boeings 😅
@@kronos711 I've been having great fun with it. I finally took some time and messed around with the control sensitivity for my Extreme 3D Pro and now it feels amazing. It was a bit skittery with default sensitivity but now it hand flies beautifully.
@@Jbay2608 yeah me personally I'm still using mouse yoke (what a scrub Ikr) until I can get my hands on a good HOTAS. Still very very fun if you can get the sensitive tuned just right.
The only thing I've learned about this is the multiple glitches and bugs that it holds.. they need to fix that asap.. as far as xbox version
Great pre-tutorial for a first try before starting to study deeper the aircraft.
Thanks from France ! 🖐
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you so much for this extremely comprehensive tutorial.
You're welcome :)
This plane is absolutly fantastic. I bought it this week and it is soo fun to fly. Youre tutorial helpes perfectly and I could excactly lern how to set up this plane. Thank you verry much :)
Glad I could help!
Thanks for the run through. Just wanted to mention it is recommended to use LVL CHG for climbs to prevent the risk of slowing too much which can happen with a climb in v speed. V speed is better for descents where you care more about not descending too quickly for passenger comfort and to arrive well timed at altitudes along the waypoints down.
Absolutely. Quite often in my videos I might choose a mode to show that it's there, and how it works. If you use the more automated modes such as FLC, there's nothing to talk about :)
@@jonbeckett Well there is everything to talk about in that particular information u gave to use V/S while climbing. Its just not about automated modes. While u were explaining u had no clue why the aircraft would not go to your set speed of 220 while climbing at a V/S of +2500. "probably something wrong with my throttle". Well mate if u are gonna give out wrong information like that and not correct it when someone points it out then that says a lot. People are gonna follow this and start putting in high V/S for climb with low speeds and the speed keeps bleeding off to a point where the aircraft stalls and just falls off head down to the ground and they'll be left nothing but a lot of questions again. I was hoping someone pointed this out in the comments and there u were with a smart reply not even trying to analyse if whatever u said in ur video is right. Well its been 7 months since u made this video I am sure u would have known this by now.
Best video on PMDG 737-800. Simple and very rich of info!
Thank you! :)
Great Video, thank you for that! 😃 You explained every button and function so well and yet compact - love that!
Glad it was helpful!
thanks, this helped, i like how you actually explain how these systems work unlike every other tutorial
If you figure out how things actually work, you've got half a chance if they go wrong :)
@@jonbeckett now thanks to you im an expert at this plane, one that seemed impossible and confusing to fly from the start. You definitely earned yourself a sub, keep up the great content.
@@Pilot_Jeff Cheers!
Great video. Really helped be. Although I would have loved to have seen the full flight.
Very good and explaining video to a 69 year old Swedish flying freek 🙂. I,ve been waiting for this aicraft a long time now and going to buy i soon. Had the 737 NGX from PMDG for FSX and loved it. Thx again for a easy to understand video. Don´t forget the autobreaks 🙂
Heh - cheers. On the beginners videos I cut a LOT of functionality out that you might use in "real-world" procedures. Notice I also didn't program all of the wind and temperature data into the FMC. It's always a balance to show enough but not so much that the video ends up being 2 hours long :)
nice age lol
Excellent video. You explain things well. I'm not an airline lover. I don't enjoy programing all the info before you take off. That said, the best value is the 737-600 at $35. That would be the model I'd purchase.
Me too. I thing PMDG are ripping everybody off quite badly.
Another good one from Jon ! Downloaded startup sequence for 737-600 from your documents. Nice with a simplified version, get up and running in no time :)
That's the idea :)
Not sure if you were having the same issue I was with the parking break. But I found you set parking break by applying the foot breaks first and then setting the parking break. Applying foot breaks again releases the parking break also.
Yes - I found that out shortly after recording (and reading the documentation lol).
Best tutorial on starting up
Glad it helped
Thanks so much I thought I wasted my money but this plane is fun thank you so much
Keep at it :)
thanks Johnathan I'm still fairly new to msfs and your videos have helped a lot :)
Wow this seems so hard I already play a game called Pilot flight training simulator this game is super complicated with all these buttons thanks for the tutorial🎉
Great video. Had no idea about that menu button, saved me a lot of aggravation 😆
Yep - it's a bit of a hidden "feature" :)
Magic, mate. Needed an in depth tutorial like this. Cheers!
You're welcome :)
Best video hands down Jonathan, thank you!!
Well you answered my question i asked in your other video haha. Awesome
Dobra robota, pomogłeś ogarnąć mi 737 ;) dziękuję bardzo.
WOW! You have explained all that really well. THANK YOU!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I REALLY LOVED IT... I FLY A LOT WITH THE A320, IT WAS A LITTLE DIFFICULT. THROUGH YOU WE SUCCESS
Lovely video. I think I bit of systems and auto flight knowledge might help you operate the-800..
I didn't show it in this video, but I know the Boeing 73 series very well. I regularly fly it for group flights with ATC (which are not on this channel). I have recorded a number of videos showing some of the deep and dark depths of the FMC programming - doing things like custom waypoints, abeam waypoints, parallel tracks, and so on. Don't presume people don't know things based on one video :)
@@jonbeckett dark depths is spot on haha.
Sorry. I think I was being ornery. Sorry if I was bit harsh. We’re flying we a lot of low time pilots to this category airplane and it’s helped me to even more about the depths of the FMC and systems.
I’ve flown the 737 for a bit now and actually love it. I mean i loved the A320 more but alas I fly what they tell me. Your content is very good!!!
Brilliant Jonathan! Thank you!
Very insightful and knowledgable thank you!
Excellent video - Thank You for sharing so much valuable information
Glad it was helpful!
thank you so much! i love this aircraft and flying this
I have always faced a problem with these planes when going from cold and dark, in which at certain altitude I get a cabin warning and I remember it had to do with the packs panel and pressure, not really sure, but I will follow your steps and give it a try. Thank you for this awesome video..
If you don't switch the packs on, you don't pressurise the cabin - or heat it. If you switch the packs on BEFORE starting the engines, you won't be able to start the engines.
This clears up so much thank you.
You're welcome :)
Thank you soooooooo much for this! 🙏🏼😊
Jonathan, thank you very much, good tutorial.
Thanks a million! Your video was extremely helpful!
Glad it helped!
Jonathan, it is just a suggestion. In one of your tutorial I did ask how works the parking brake. I do have the same TCA Quadrant captain control. The Parking brake on the control button Joystick 20 is not working with PMDG 737-800. To make it working and on the Throttle control, I have to remove (clear input) button 20 and then here is the solution for the parking brake.
RELEASING parking brake: Press Rudder pedal and parking brake release.
ACTIVATE parking brake; Press Rudder pedal & manually PULL Parking Brake.
I hope this information will be valuable for everybody or meny virtual pilots who using PMDG 737-8.
Thanks Jonathan, -Kris
I disabled the parking break for the 737 - it doesn't work with the Airbus Quadrant. The 737 has a unique arrangement that is simulated accurately - you have to apply pressure on the foot brakes before the parking brake lever in the cockpit will work.
Thanks for the great explanation..
very helpful thanks alot ❤
super introduction 👍 thx a lot and happy flights 🛫
You're welcome :)
Great video and very helpful, thanks. I have activated the "cold and dark" start up which is OK but how do I turn it off so that I can do a quick circuit practice without having to do the full procedure?
Go back into the FMC and change the state of the aircraft in the PMDG menu. To activate the FMC with no power, hold the menu button on.
Brilliant videos Jonathan, I have a question about cold and dark, If it's night time how the heck do you find the battery switch?
You use a torch :) quite literally, in real life and in the simulator! I think the shortcut key for this in fs2020 is Alt+L ✌
very nice and clear video John. p.s. I don't think the buzz at 22:10 was your USB. I think it was the T/O Config warning, as I saw the throttles moved without flaps/slats set!!
The USB causes the throttles to move.
@@jonbeckett oh dear!!!!!
Awesome video as always. Keep up the great work.
Thanks for the visit
Thanks for the tutorial
Hi Jonathan, Thank you very much for this very useful video. Just I missed the name of your flight plan site which you use now. I'' ll appriciate if you write me it's name. Thanks.
I use a mixture of LittleNavMap (free windows app), and Navigraph.
Amazing video thanks Jonathan!
My pleasure!
I purchased the PMDG 737-600. Is the starting sequence essentially the same? thanks for the vid.
Yes - identical.
Hello Jonathan, thanks for the tutorial. I was wondering wat your PC specs are? since I plan on buying this aircraft but am scared that my PC won't be able to handie it :P
My streams are never as smooth as the actual sim - because I run in 4K and down-rate to 1080p in OBS. The 737 is very light on resources. The 737 and the BAe 146 are probably the most optimised aircraft in the simulator at the moment.
I would like to see how to set the airbus quadrant. I'm flying this 737-800 with them. Thanks
Your presentation is always spot on and very methodical. I really appreciate them.
Secondly, I'm watching this no matter that I haven't bought the 800 nor do I intend to, but I've found that the sequences are pretty much the same with the other 737s, and I have the 700. So, I will again ask, why am I to buy the 800 at all??
The procedures are the same across all of them. It's 99% the same aircraft.
The 800 has different weights/balance and flight characteristics than the 700 due to simply being bigger, but it's basically the same aircraft regarding everything else so I wouldn't spend another 70$ if I were you :)
Another great video, does the battery humming noise ever turn off i can never ever seem to stop it?
The hum is the fans behind a lot of the electronics.
@@jonbeckett ty
the best , thanks ✌
tnx man it was help full
hey hello! Thank you so much for this was very clean! Allthough i cant steer the plane on the ground and i dont know how to resolve it... i tried everything and im getting fustradet maybe you could help me?
Check the nose wheel steering axis is configured.
thanks mate your vids are very easy to follow
Glad you like them!
Excellent video as ever . I'm having issues with IRS not aligning, am certain it's me doing something wrong tho!
If left on "realistic", it's because IRS takes about 8 minutes to align. You can manipulate it in the FMC - under the PMDG menu.
@@jonbeckett I'm doing something weirdly wrong. I discovered the thing about setting it to realistic. Weirdly though, when I set it to realistic despite obviously having to wait 8 mins (which realistically I'm not going to want to do all time) it actually aligned, when I set it to 30 secs it never aĺigns for me .
@@jonathandesmond8697 how strange !?
Great video
I have the PMDG 737-600. When I fire it up it says “Nav data out of date”. I did a flight from Las Vegas to Phoenix and it never found the VOR.Apparently the only way to solve this a monthly subscription to Navigraph. I don’t have that problem with the stock 747 in MSFS 2020.
The more accurate aircraft report the expiry date on the nav data :)
Hi, whenever I do a flight LNAV doesn't work. I take off and then try to activate LNAV but it just flickers and then turns off. I've also tried activating it on the ground it still doesn't work. Do you know how to fix this?
LNAV generally needs a flight plan without discontinuities, flight directors on, and the IRS system aligned and ready-to-go.
Amazing, thank you!!
You're very welcome!
Well got through the set up on the FMC for a flight from KTUL to KMCI which is pretty much flying north. Departed hit the A/T then CMD (autopilot?) and the plane was flying fine except it was heading due south? On the MCP setup I set the heading to 180 (runway 18), LNAV, V/S and altitude. It seems two be following the heading rather than where I’m supposed to be going? Any input? Thx
Great introduction. This is my first attempt on a so called study level plane and it is really a steeper learning curve than the native airliners in MSFS.
I used your checklist for the start up and also watched your other video that focus on the programming of the FMC and Little Navmap. The one thing I haven’t understood yet is how to correctly engage the autopilot. It doesn’t follow the flightpath set in the FMC and it always wants to decend, no matter what I set the altitude and vertical speed to. I click the main autopilot engage but the green light does not come on. Only the auto throttle works with the set speed.
Any idea on how to trouble shoot this issue?
If the autopilot doesn't come on, it's probably because you have a discontinuity in the flight plan legs, or the flight directors are not on, or the inertial navigation system isn't aligned (but then you would have no attitude indicator), or you have a control input. You usually can't engage the autopilot unless the controls are at rest.
@@jonbeckett yes! It seems it might have been the knob over the nav alignmrnent, the one labeled ”DSPL SEL” that I hadn’t set to ”HDG/STS”. Not sure but it was the only thing I could find that I did differently, and now it work flawlessly. :)
Thanks!
Just hoping to see Xbox release in the near future. Love how this plane looks and the reviews on it.
It's exactly the same as the others - just bigger and heavier.
@@jonbeckett can't wait to experience it myself.
Xbox version is absolutely terrible. Nothing works right.
Thank you very much Sir 👍
All the best
Does anyone else have the issue where the pilot side pfd doesn’t show anything? The copilot does but not the pilot. I can’t see flight plan or anything
Could be something else interfering with it ? Or you've accidentally turned the brightness down on the pilot side ?
When you was turning the FD on and L-NAV my LNAV wasn’t turning just flashing green for a second then went off,
That means either the IRS hasn't aligned, or the FMS is not configured.
PMDG used to have a Turn Around State back in P3D. I'd love to set one up for MSFS 2020.
It's built into it - it's in the FMC.
@@jonbeckett i've not been able to find it. Will just create it myself
I've not purchased this aircraft yet but was wondering if there is a way to load say your return flight from inside the cockpit or do you have to end flight and go back to the main sim menu to create next flight? This is what I'm finding with GA flying.
@@jayrermars8493 You can re-program the flight-plan within the FMC.
@@jonbeckett Ok but how do you get the ATC to react with the new IFR plan?
Can you plis make a good toturial on how to make a flight plan and how to innput it on the boeing pmdg 737-800 pliiiiiiiiiis a need help.
Search my channel for 737 flight planning www.youtube.com/@jonbeckett/search?query=737%20flight%20plan
Do i not have to pre load the flight plan using the sims input or can i just spawn in and load the SIDS and STARS myself?
The PMDG aircraft take no notice of the world map screen flight plan - you have to do it "in the cockpit" like the real crews do it (there is a form of simbrief integration though too).
@jonbeckett Thank you, I experimented last night and I would always get an overlap of my arrival or departure route. I tried it just like you said and got a perfect route. I knew this but the last time I flew PMDG was 2-3 years ago on FSX. Flight Simulator X flight planning was a bit different than this.
This was very helpful unfortunately there is a bug with the one on Xbox.
Jonathan - Off Topic - in the past - you have convinced me to use Little Map - but I keep running into the need for the 'Aircraft Performance" detail file
I have found a few on the LP website for a small number of MSFS a/c but I was wondering what is your source - in this video you are using the 800 aircraft - which we know is different to the 600 and 700 for instance and your many videos using different aircraft for the first time need a new AP for the LM
I rarely bother looking for the accurate performance file in LNM - I just downloaded a 737 MAX from the internet after googling it. You can of course perform a flight in an aircraft, and use the flight as the basis for performance in LNM - I'll do a video on it at some point :)
@@jonbeckett That would be useful
TA!! and thanks for the 600 checklist - I had just finished writing down - the step by step in your 600 video --- LOL
@@jayteeaitch You do realise I made the document available for you to copy/print ?
I got all the way to the APU start and nothing happened! Any ideas or help? So frustrating😢
APU takes a while usually.
First off the video/ your guide was amazing, but I’m having a bit of an issue I’m not sure if this is a bug and an update needs to happen, but I’m trying to press LNav and it’s no coming on at all only vnav anyone can help maybe I’m doing something wrong?
Just thinking out loud - make sure the flight directors are on, and make sure you have removed any discontinuities from the flight plan.
