- An functional guide to starting the Airbus A310-300 from cold and dark in Microsoft Flight Simulator - programming a route, starting the engines, and configuring the plane for take-off. I'm still learning, so I take you along for the ride with me. It's a wonderful aircraft - particularly for free.
Here's where you can find the checklist:
ko-fi.com/jonb...
I work though programming custom views (CTRL+ALT+NUM) then using them (ALT+NUM), powering the aircraft up, aligning the IRS system, programming a route, configuring the aircraft for flight, and then taxiing out and flying some of the departure just to show how it functionally works.
Before anybody comments about it, yes, I miss a lot out in the start checks - that's intentional, based on the default state of the aircraft in the simulator. In the real world the pilot and co-pilot would make no presumptions.

Thanks for the chi list and walk through from cold and dark great job ! Are their any manuals with the various aircraft released with the update if so where can they be found possibly sim objects then aeroplanes?.Thanks again Jonathan . BR Charlie
Thanks for that.
I have done every check list possible and I can never get the engines to start and ideas :(
@@flightmasta I had problems during an impromptu live-stream last night - it's to do with timing. I'll do a video specifically about it.
Just a quick pointer. The runway length and tora(take off run available) are not always the same.
The tora from each take off position is given under note 5 on the bottom right of the chart.
best A310 tutorial on youtube. Quick and succinct. Was really hungover this morning before heading to the airport, but made my flight schedule and sustained minimal injuries to the passengers
Cheers!
Succinct, word of the day.
😭✋
I have to agree. The level of preparation is showing. These videos are getting better and better.
The injuries the passengers sustained were NOT from the turbulence though...
I really love these old analogue gauges looks so much nicer than digital ones
It's just evolution though - the digital ones carry more information, and are more flexible. I like the analogue guages too though.
@@jonbeckett I know, we can't stop advancement in technology just cause the older stuff looks prettier but it's sad all the same. I'm sure in the future when we have holographic instruments we will look back at these digital ones in the same way
by itself i don't like the old ones but being in the cockpit just gives off a whole different vibe and I love it. Would much rather be able to fly this plane good than the a320
Finally, finally, I got my sim fully updated. It took a whole night of downloading. Still feeling groggy from staying up, but I'm glad it's done and I'm doing my best to follow tutorials here and everywhere to catch up with how to get flying in an enjoyable fashion. Thanks Jon for all the effort you've thrown into this.
You're welcome :)
I like how you explain what the systems do as you are turning them on. Much more complete lesson. Keep them coming because you have a new subscriber.
Thank you!
1 year on and I have to say there is something about the way you teach which relaxes me and makes me listen closely.
There are is one highly qualified chap here who sends me to sleep instead, so thank you for keeping my stoopid brain alert
with your genuinely fine tutorials.
Best to you from lesser London
Barty
Hi Jonathan, I just want to say a big thank you, ive had the game for over two years, and today i successfully started up the old girl, and made a successful flight, i tip my hat of to you sir, many thanks.
Best teacher by far. This is my first planning and start up in msfs. I will definitely keep doing it because of the ease you’ve made it. Thank you!
You got this!
Man, I always learn so much from watching your videos. When looking to start studying a plane, I watch yours, along with a couple others, videos before setting up a flight and putting together a checklist. Your format of simply walking us through your process is extremely helpful.
I tend to cut out ALL of the checks - presuming that a simulated version will be "good" before we get in it :)
@@jonbeckett … same. I want the plane setup properly within the sim, but I dont want to spend my sim time doing checks that arent necessary within a simulator.
Thank you so much for this well presented and informative guide to starting the Airbus A310-300 for MSFS2020. It's just what I needed! Thanks too, for putting together the checklist - so helpful and much appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
Even though I primarily mess with the 737 I particularly appreciate the fact that Airbus designs their craft with an in between of digital and analog instruments. Really is the best of both worlds.
Well... the A310 was a stepping stone on the way towards glass cockpits - a bit like the MD-82. They didn't design it to have a mix on purpose - it was just the technology of the era it was developed.
@@jonbeckett ah that explains it, so many model names I hardly know which ones are built when lol, for example the X Cub I have yet to fly and just learned today it was actually designed around 2016 which explains the g1000 navigation in it. Really interesting interior design for something built so recently.
I’ve been wanting to fly the a310 since it came out and could never figure it out until i watched your video. Thank you my friend i love the plane. Keep up the awesome videos
Glad I could help!
25:54 "That's not looking good" LOL I think he was looking for thermals🤣
Hah - comment of the day :)
This video helped me out immensely. Thank you for your time and effort doing this.
Glad it helped!
Super Tutorial. Keep up the good work. We need people like you. Nice and slow and clear instructions. 😊👍🏻
Fantastic video Jonathan 👏 Learned a ton from you this morning! The flight plan entry isn't as intimidating as I thought it would be 👌
The weird thing with it is the differences from the newer Airbuses - it's interesting that you can see the evolution from it when you look at the newer aircraft.
@@jonbeckett I'll have to see how comprehensive the included a320 Neo is on Xbox compared to the study level a310 since you can't get study level a320's on Xbox unfortunately. I'm tempted to learn airliners with the a320 since it's more modern but I'm already noticing inoperative features on it that make me want to go back to the a310
The only thing you missed is that, after entering a "TNT" VOR/ waypoint, you are required to exclaim "BOOM!".
Dad jokes aside, thank you so much for this! I've yet to dip my toe into the airliner side of the sim. This new addition has me very tempted and I shall be following your excellent guides.
Hahaha - Dad jokes rule (I have three daughters) :)
Thanks for the tutorial, it's a bit challenging compare to the newer aircraft I always fly, but it still great fun
It really is!
Great video! After watching this I completed by first flight with the A310!
I think I know the reason it took so long for APU ignition. You didn't hit the APU bleed switch after turning on the APU master.
Real world A320 driver here. This is one very interesting aircraft.
It seems Airbus were still following the path laid down by Boeing and MDD at the time but taking baby steps into new terrain. An interesting hybrid that probably gave them the confidence to throw the rule book out and do their own thing.
The A320 has very little in common with a 737.
I haven't had time yet to do a full flight on the A310, but from what I have seen so far I am looking forward to it.
Thanks for the tutorial.
I'm not a real pilot but judging from the sim, I find it stunning how bad the ergonomics are of the 737 cockpit compared to a 320. It's basically an unlogical mess.
I love that you can see how decisions were made to evolve the layout. The closer you look at the A310, the more you see of the Boeing cockpit - down to little things like the bank angle selector, and the three position gear lever. Oh - and the starters for the engines :)
@@jingle1161 an Alaska airlines pilot told me that Airbuses were great for low time pilot pools, i.e. countries with few high time engine experience. Also,!I have a friend who flies for Southwest Airlines-they have an all 737 fleet, and they love it.
@@joshiasbaja3934 I would fly any plane if I could make a living out of it 😉. But I understand regarding the 737. It's probably more challenging/fun to fly than a 320.
At least that's my impression in the sim.
Another excellent comprehensive video by Jonathan!Well done!👏👏👏👍👍👍
Cheers
Always a pleasure to watch your videos. Exactly what I needed. Thanks for the checklist !
You're welcome!
Thank god Jonathan you saved us with another amazing tutorial
You're welcome :)
good tutorial, i tried first without help and had to give up, couldnt figure out how to start the damn thing haha. so thank you!
You're welcome :)
Just finished watching the first iteration of this JB. I do like a perfectionist 😀 Will watch this one too of course 😀
Yeah - sorry about that. Serves me right for recording at 1am :) lol
Massive thanks for this upload Jonathan. And massive thanks to Asobo and MS for this. It’s a lovely gift to the community.
@@markscars1069 You're welcome :)
Thanks for doing this. Amazing how different the cockpit of the A310 is from the A320. Obviously, much older tech.
Indeed it is. In fact, this is a case of modern technology grafted onto an older design. Not unlike the later versions of the MD-80 series.
Yep - it's the direct ancestor of it.
amazing tutorial. I start MSFS first with your video and follow along until I take off. I wish I knew more the "why" I am doing but I guess its a step by step learning curve. Thank you! (btw I'm SBGR-SBRJ at the moment ;) )
Glad to help
The engines sound great on this awesome guide also learned alot and forgot alot have to watch this again lol
Great start with this plane. Looking forward for moore videos with this one. Thanks Jonathan for a great video.
Thanks for watching!
Need to spend some more time in this plane. They did a great job considering its a default aircraft. I spend most of my time in the Fenix and PMDG planes, but this one needs to be in my lineup more often
It's great, isn't it :)
thankyou for making a tutorial on this, yours are always my first pick.
Glad I could help!
Even living accros the channel, I could well understand your video. Thanks a lot and lets do it !
Great!
Thank you Sir. for this initial procedures. I'll try right away. :) Happy new year!
This is really helpful mate ❤
Excellent tutorial really enjoyed it. It was extremely informational looking forward to your others.
Thanks by the explanation, clear and detailed. Have good flights.
Glad it was helpful!
Mr Beckett. On starting engine the ingnition A or B it is used fo alternated the system, a they use on odd number days system A and even days use system B. This is from many airliner in world do this. Those ingnition used hight voltage and the plugs worn fast and to be sure they both work they used alternatively to spread the worn out even.
Did I not say that in the video ?
This was fantastic, thanks a lot!
Great, another one from Jon !
Thankyou!
Well! finaly I find a very intuitive video.I leared so much more .even better than reading the true manuals, only got to get my MCDO working on a kindle then will be happy bunny thats the problem with the 70yr old brain but hey ho onward and upward ,hopefully
Glad it helped!
I was just picturing Jonathon casually running through the checklists with us whilst sucking all of the ground crew into the engines because he didn't put the becaons on lol
Hahahahaha
Another great video and well explained! Well done again!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the tutorial!
Fantastic tutorial. Very detailed and interesting. Keep it up!
Much appreciated!
Many thanks Jonathan, it was a great help👍
No problem 👍
Thx realy a SUPER clear explanation flow to do a cold d’art start! Fantastic
Great video, thank you👍🏻
Thanks for the clear instructions
You're welcome :)
Great tutorial, many thanks. You have a new subscriber. Happy flying.
Awesome, thank you!
@Jonathan Beckett yesterday I installed the new Honda so I can have my navigraph charts while flying. I noticed that my autopilot is not responding once in the air when changing altitude or speed. Have you heard of this issue?
14:22 I’m not sure why Navigraph gives OAT in F here. Even here in the United States, Fahrenheit is never used in aviation. Only Celsius is used.
hi Jonathan, I use to operate A310's long time ago. You did well with yr checks, missed few things but for the sake of flying it in sim is fine. what you really need is the SOP's (standard operating procedures) in order to make it realistic 100%
Random question but in the scratchpad at 11:40 do you put tnt for all flights or does it depend where you are? i just don’t get what TNT means. thanks in advance
@@ReesesPeanutDogger TNT VOR is navigation facility used by old fashion navigation
Is there a way you could add time stamps to the description so that I can jump to the different steps? Great video though!
I'll get there eventually :)
Thanks!
Thank you :)
Amazing tutorial as always! 😊😊😊
You're welcome :)
Great Video, Great Tutorial, thank you
You're welcome :)
Really good guide thank you earned a new sub.
Awesome, thank you!
thank you very much.
You are welcome!
love it and thanks jonathon
You're welcome!
Thanks for the great video. I can’t get my aircraft to follow the flight plan with AP engaged. Any help appreciated. Xbox version. Thank you 🙏
I just recorded a video doing exactly that.
I can confirm this video just told me how to fly a A310
You're welcome :)
if you press the arrows you can move around
thanks for info did ask another flight simm for help told i was rasist ? most odd and not allowed to ask why ,lets hope i can start the engine from stand still now
How do you get rid of the gps lost primary on the routing screen
Press the CLR button? Also, make sure you've swiched on the inertial navigation system overhead.
Really useful tutorial thankss
You are welcome
Great video
Thanks!
As always your explanations are complete and easy to follow, my only problem is starting cold and dark at night. I can turn on some flood lights but it only helps with the main panels in front but the top panels and the centre panels are dark. It's imposible to do anything. Any ideas? I am using 40th Anniversary on the xbox
Try pressing L :)
@@jonbeckett I should have said I am also using the controller so no keyboard, however I have now found it on the left side of the pedestal. Lights up the overheads and the pedestal like it should. Just can't get the autopilot panel to light up.
Great video as always, been meaning to ask why no one seems to use the flight planner within the Sim, all the tutorial videos on UA-cam for all aircraft seem to use the FMC direct and third party programs to do the route. I get lost by that, all the extra info you put into the programming from those charts for example.
The more accurate aircraft don't work with the simulator flight planning tool because they require much more information. The more accurate aircraft aim to replicate the experience of a real flight crew - so the avionics and flight management systems work much more like the real aircraft than the out-of-the-box Asobo built systems. I find learning the systems as much as flying.
Great job very clean and to the point. Keep up the videos, look forward to more to come
Dear Jonathan, Many thanks for your tutorial! Would you mind letting me know where could I get my hand on such programs that I could use as a learning display tools please?
I'm not quite sure I understand the question.
Very nice, tx... One thing I can't figure out, how do you map the throttles so that the reversers don't automatically deploy when bringing the power levers back? OK found it! You need to disable this feature in the EFB!
Yes - it's also linked to the axis you have chosen for the throttles, and the sensitivity curves you have configured.
The games says something about squwak... where is it in the a310?
It's the transponder code - if you're talking to ATC on IFR you'll need it. The controls to set it are just behind the start switches for the engines on the central pedestal console.
Seems taxi light are very weak here.. i see no difference with them or without from coctpit
It's difficult to tell in broad daylight :)
@@jonbeckett i tried at night) ( 23. pm local time)
I love It!
Cheers :)
Thank for the tutorial.
But I got a problem that I can't turn on the engines and I can't press any putton on it.
Can any one help me?
Not sure what is going on with my sim, following your guide and the INS never alligns and I can't get either engine to start. Just sits on crank, it's like the fuel is flowing properly but I have turned the pumps on etc.
is this the order a real a310 pilot would of one it in?
A real pilot has many more checks and balances - I just go through the essentials WITHIN THE SIM :)
@@jonbeckett ok thank you. would they start the apu the same time you do? on the a320 i normally only start it when i’m about to start the engines and get push back
The 26:00 minute mark made me lol 😂😂😂😂
No matter what i do the irs is not able to align its showing gps primary lost. i dont know what the problem is could you help please
There are two steps in the A300 and A310 - switch on the IRS switches overhead, then in the MCDU press the button to initialise the system. It's covered in the checklist I linked in the notes of the video.
Im having some issues with the a310 locking up. No CTDs, but just freezes up and wont come out. Still not sure why.
I've never had it lock up...
What settings do i need to change so the game doesn't automatically start engines and all that stuff?
Start from a gate or parking position - not the runway.
It's gorgeous indeed, but I was very disappointed that they didn't include any of the ground support equipment (not even the chocks) that they have in the X-Plane 11 version.
You got it for free, and you're complaining? :)
@@jonbeckett I'm just making a true observation. I also acknowledged that it was gorgeous, which is true as well.
brill thanks for taking the time to help us really enjoying the a310 there is a lot to it now I hate the default airbus, lol
New shiny things are always fun :)
Hey. I'd love to know where you got that map. it looks very useful
LittleNavMap
@@jonbeckett thank you very much
I follow the first steps exactly when turning on all IRS to nav and selector but my ATT and HDG are not turning on now matter how long I wait, so I get stuck when I need to pitch the trims as it won’t allow me too. I have IRS alignment on instant too. Someone help please
Very helpful video. Thanks for sharing us! How can I customize instrument views with keys as you did here. I find it very convenient. The default views: ctrl+1, ctrl+2, … from iniBuilds are terrible, they just zoom unnecessary parts of cockpit instruments.
I explain it in the video. Move the camera around with the mouse and the cursor keys. Press CTRL+ALT+NUM to set a custom view, then ALT+NUM to use it.
Thanks ..
Cheers
Can you do a Airbus A320 startup in the FlyByWire? (Like a beginner guide)
I believe I already have... if you search my channel for FlyByWire you'll probably find it.
Whenever i try to go to next page from INIT it says not allowed. Watched several tutorials on this and still cant find the answer.
Did you set the INS system to align ?
@@jonbeckett For the INS I did not, where is that? If you mean IRS system to align on the INIT page then yes, otherwise I’d say no.
I still can’t get the Artificial horizon to display, I’m getting a blank screen with ATT on it
That's because the inertial navigation system has not aligned. It takes several minutes unless you go into the tablet and speed it up :)
@@jonbeckett ah gotcha. I think I did it wrong. I switched the 3 dials at the top to Nav and then the larger dial to the mode on the right, I forgot the name but it’s a long acronym. I’ll have to look at the way to speed it up on the tablet
It’s a buggy mess on Xbox can’t program a flight plan the tablet on the left doesn’t work the cursor is somehow above where you click and it crashes at certain airports
There was a long list of issues released with Sim Update 11 - I imagine IniBuilds are busy working on it.
@@jonbeckett i hope so i was really looking forward to flying the first study level aircraft on xbox
my rudder and nose wheel steering is not working on the ground. its on in the ipad what should i do when i spawn on the runway it works fine
Arent you supposed to click *insert, instead of "return" when you choose the sid and star in the mcdu?
Yes.
Thank you, I have question... what is the profile auto pilot function?
Good question. When I've had a chance to learn the plane properly myself, I'll record some more videos. Until then, the documentation is with the plan in the packages folder.
I have a constant beeping noise with no way of finding the root of the problem, please I need help
That's part of the fun of old planes - knowing what might be causing an alert :) Without sitting and watching you, it's almost impossible to give you an answer - could be 101 things.
@@jonbeckett I’ve just realised what the issue was, I accidentally clicked on the landing gear while I was still on the ground. Your video did well with explaining all the preflight procedures for the A310!!!
I did everything you did in the video but my plane follows a few points after taking off then goes straight and doesn’t follow anyway waypoints. The distance of the next way point increases rather then decreases I’m on Xbox btw.
It appears there are some bugs in it...
question.. how do you check how much block fuel you have im stuck..
Thank you for this clear expert explanation. After the citation CJ4, I am now ready to start with the airbus A310-300. With your explanations, I managed to do it well.
I made the same flight.
However, I still have a question: when I choose RWY 04 instead of RWY22 with a different SID in the flight plan, ATC still sends me to RWY22. Can I change this that ATC sends me to RW04.
Thank you!
You have to put the plan into the map screen for ATC - they take no notice of what you do in the cockpit.
Why hasn't my PFD not displayed?
No idea.
Heya, this is really informative but think aircraft does not have an LNav VNav mode gets replaced by the profile button on autopilot panel.. think you confused that for VOR/LOC mode..
I am not an airbus guy though but this aircraft is so much similar to Boeing.
I often say one thing and mean another :) It has a form of LNAV - but you are right - it's not called that.
