      +jlc012 Yeah but talent is simply a jump start, we all sound like shit in the beginning, some of us less then others, and that is talent, but in the god damn end, it comes down to hard work and effort that make you good at something. Thinking otherwise is completely ignorant. No one can "just play", and when people right off my art as "talent" or say something along the lines of "he can just play" I want to punch them in the nose, because hours and hours, and years of work go into honing my skills to become good at drawing, and yet many people act like "i can just play", and "i just want to give them the middle finger".

    I never liked this scene because it implies that Mozart (and Beethoven) didn't become geniuses at what they did by practicing for years and years. Mozart himself said (translated) "The idea that I don't work is a myth. I write as a sow pisses." Just like being 6'10" doesn't make you a great basketball player, having a huge IQ does NOT make you an automatic great musician or mathematician. It's simple potential that you have to make use of by PRACTICING relentlessly, for years.

      Have to disagree. What you describe is the very difference between Will Hunting and Gerald Lambeau. Will does not strive to be Gerald, or to impress Gerald, he simply "Is". Gerald, on the other hand, wishes Will had what Will has. Gerald will never be there and says as much.
      The Mozart quote references work ethic rather than apptitude. Mozart was still beginning his labor on another , even several, level(s) beyond his contemporaries. That prodgeny works at employing their talent rather than working for and applying a learned discipline.
      The topic of"Genius" was much coverd in other such films,
      Amadeus, and "Searching for Bobby Fisher" to name two.

      When I was in college I would read books and write drafts for my essays whilst listening to music on the subway. Shit was really loud lol. There comes a time when you learn to ignore loud noises and become capable of focusing on the task at hand. You just block it out. I read 4 books in 2 months just riding on the subway cause that was the only time I had when I could actually chill. That one and a half hour ride was the only time I could sit back and relax. So I read and wrote. You just learn to ignore things.

I tend to listen to melodic trance music when I'm studying or working on a project and it just puts me in a groove. Once in an exam somebody's mp3 player started blaring from the bag and was playing a trance album. We couldn't figure out where the noise was coming from but I actually performed better on that exam than I had in a long time.

      Yall missing the point, she was on a date, just grabbing some lunch with Will. Sometimes the only time you can spend with someone is just keeping them company while you study. The first 15 seconds of of this clip was Will seeing how difficult it was for her to study in an open location like that just to spend time with him.
      Its not that she was studying in a noisy location because "thats just how students do", she was studying there because thats the only time/place she could spend with Will.

    01:33 The firemen driving the firetruck blaring in the background, rushing off to a fire or an emergency of some sort somewhere in Boston had no idea that moment was being recorded during the making of what would become an enormously famous, Oscar winning movie. I always think about things like that when watching movies and you hear sirens in the background, or see a train going by, like in Wolf of Wall Street where an Amtrak happened to fly by when they were filming an exterior shot of a diner, or like in Goodfellas, when they were filming the outside payphone scene and meanwhile some car was honking at another in the background. :D

    The funny thing about life and academics at universities is ... that they ... I mean students & professors ... do really believe that all what they call "knowledge" is real ... means "vaild" ... ;-) ... BUT (!) ... as Daniel J. Boorstin had once said ...
    ... "The biggest obstacle to discovery is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge!" ...

      In many ways, being unencumbered by other people's information and knowledge is an advantage, because you see things from a fresh perspective and the ability to see things others don't is what marks out geniuses from the really flipping smart. Someone with an IQ of 210 isn't necessarily a genius, whereas a genius might only score 150 on IQ, but they can do and see and think things that the 210 never can.

    Matthew Paige Damon (Cambridge; 08 de octubre de 1970), conocido simplemente como Matt Damon, es un actor, guionista y productor estadounidense. Desde temprana edad se destacó en sus estudios y comenzó a mostrar interés por la actuación durante la secundaria gracias a sus maestros. Aunque ingresó a la Universidad de Harvard, la abandonó antes de poder graduarse para mudarse a Nueva York y conseguir mejores oportunidades en el cine. Tras varias apariciones como extra, hizo su debut como protagonista con la película School Ties (1992) y después logró mayor reconocimiento con su papel en Good Will Hunting (1997), que le valió una nominación al Óscar como mejor actor y un galardón por mejor guion original.

    Everett01While I understand what you are trying to imply, I think an important piece of context is missing. You argue that the scene does not fully acknowledge Mozart's work ethic and I disagree. I disagree because Will also has a strong work ethic. He purposefully becomes a janitor at MIT ("the most prestigious technical college in the whole fkn world") and practices his skills on problem sets that very few people in the world could solve. I that instance, he works just as hard as Mozart at perfecting a skill set he was obviously born to master.

    Nonsense. Both Beethoven and Mozart had hyper intense fathers who had them studying musical composition from very early childhood. They obviously had special talent, but their success was 100% nature and 100% nurture. You cannot skip the hard work.

    • @fifthbeatle
      @fifthbeatle 4 роки тому

      Bill Cook Wait really? That’s a fascinating way to put it for sure. Are you sure hard work is always necessarily needed to reach success? Or do you think pure talent typically lets you reach the top immediately.
