agreed. He wasn't crying or yelling or doing anything big but its still so impactful because of the micro expressions. One of the best actors to have ever done it.If not the best.
@Kjthelife I doubt that he was thinking about the micro expressions while recording this scene. It is all about Robin's gift of feeling. Of being there, of living the story and let his own soul suffer like his character did. When I look at him I see true pain, anguish, happiness, enthusiasm and those all can't be faked by micro expressions. You need to be willing to expose your soul to all those feelings and then let it speak about the experience. That's a true actor for me. Sorry for the bad english btw.

There is love so pure. My wife passed away not 15 months ago, and to have felt, and lost, that love as Robin Williams describes it, is beyond common understanding. To have someone in your life, that you would go through fire and flames for just to see them smile. And that smile would turn away the darkest skies and make the sun shine. Love so powerful, that it could make your day, if you saw them being happy. And who would even give you a smile, when their day was bad. Being each other's angels, and make the rest of the world "disappear", when you saw into their eyes. Don't give up on love, because it really is out there.
@Joachim Vorbech Christensen wow. Thank you for this. I didn't know that kind of love existed anymore. What I really love about this whole scene is when he says ' to have that love for her and to be there through anything...through cancer' and at that moment(02:40), Will's eye movement looks down and the slight moving his head down, as if he is reflecting on the horrible things he said to Shaun in his office about his wife and his eye movement indicates he is understanding that he has been totally out of line talking about Shaun's wife the way he did and maybe feels a bit bad about it. It is a early indicator that Will has empathy and underneath it all, he is a good guy. The details like that in the scene and the camera operators movement of the camera to capture their expressions is brilliant. Amazing acting from the two of them.
If more therapists were willing to risk authentic, vulnerable connection like Robin's character here, there would be a lot less suffering in the world.
Thearapists examine disordered behaviour much like a zookeeper might examine the behaviour of animals I rarely meet ones that can empathise or enter on to my feelings most of the ones I have spoken to are just as cocky and arrogant as will hunting is in this film
This scene will forever speak to me. So many lessons in it. It teaches you about love and it teaches you about judging others. Despite how intelligent you are, or what your story is, how can you judge the human experience another has gone through by just looks or a brief interaction with them? Truly miss Robin Williams brilliance on the screen. I’ve never watched a pivotal moment in a movie and had it feel so real and make me evaluate how I treat others every times I see it. Love this movie
RIP to such a brilliant and talented man and a beautiful human being. His Oscar for this role was so well deserved. The depth of emotion he went into in these scenes with Matt Damon, were phenomenal. It’s not your fault…
This scene is obviously Robin's moment and clearly the scene that earned him his long overdue deserved Oscar. But, what Damon does toward the end of the monologue when Robin has cut through all his defenses to get to the heart of the matter arriving at this moment of truth heightened reality moment has always gripped me. Matt is doing very minimalist acting giving Robin all the space he needs to cook which he does and is, but then those precise specific moments where Damon maintains his poker face, but his side-eying begins here indicating to us the exact moment in time Robin's character had broken through Will's bullet proof armour and for the first time Will hopelessly attempting to maintain his facade, but desperately trying to read this unlikeliest of sage's face and mannerisms for some sort of hint or clue in how to deal with him, but literally left in a state of discombobulated confusion grasping for a way to process a meriad of emotions bombarding him not the least of which is he has no muscle memory of life experience to draw from in how to handle a situation where he inexplicably he has been outmatched, out played, out psyched by some one he now knows he respects, has hurt, totally misread, but completely has his number and calling him out point after point like some lightening round of This Is Your Life of the Damned. But, most of all, that worst creeping up feeling that all cynics and the jaded have to confront sooner or later if they're lucky: when someone does come along who suddenly does care, is a difference maker, the game changer, but all you know is pain and betrayal and putting up walls as a result so how do you relearn a lifetime of trauma to even begin to trust that gift of help or believe and let into your brutalized soul hope? Its all there in those frantic, darting eyes lost at sea flaling for a life preserver or what to do. Its revieting and a masterclass of minimist acting while giving your scene partner everything they need. These two made movie magic together. Matt got that opportunity. Ben had no scenes with Robin and never got to gave that chance. Nobody ever in the twenty five plus years has ever asked Ben that publicly and I've always wondered how he feels about that.
As I have looked back on the many successes of Robin, I see someone as grounded and desirous of showing the human spirit. That is a very special talent that few bring to the screen. This monologue exemplifies the talent of Robin and his extraordinary work. It’s sad he’s gone, RHIP.
We don't seem to have that kind of writing in movies or series anymore. But, then again, we don't seem to have those kinds of actors like Robin Williams in movies or series anymore.
May I try to change your mind? I recommend Mass (2021). It's mostly four people talking in an almost empty room. Nothing to carry the film except its excellent script (that, dare I say, rivals Good Will Huntings') and the actors' acting skills.
The genius of this scene: how the camera waits until Robin Williams' monolog has shaken Matt Damon before panning over to include the younger actor in the frame. Genius.
So true. And then Matt sitting alone and sad on the bench at the end, contrasted with families having fun around him in the beautiful Boston Common. I can't get my head around just how good this movie is.
a powerful scene that shows the extraordinary difference between knowing something intellectually and truly understanding something and the courageous vulnerability it takes to bridge that gap.
You can see the moment it stops becoming acting when robin Williams states the phrase " i see a cocky scared shitless kid" in his eyes! his eyelids drop maybe 1-3 centimeters and the light disappears, but you see the difference between intelligence vs experience! Amazing beautiful acting that shows the depth and honesty between existence itself. you can see the actors weren't just acting but in their own eyes and heart they understood it was so much deeper than what would be explained!
There is a recent interview with Matt Damon where the interviewer says he visited the bench, took a picture, and saw that someone has carved that line into the bench.
I realise now the last time I watched this, was before my wife was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Watching it again now, brings a whole new meaning to what his words meant.
I loved this man & I miss him every day. He was so good in this film, he turned a very predictable story into an unforgettable moment in cinema history. Robin Williams was remarkably without the ego that far too many " actors " have. And here, in a key moment, he is both therapist, & friend to a troubled kid . And in the process, Will begins to see Sean as someone he can & must, listen to, for once in his life. Legendary scene. -----MJL, 77 y/o
This scene really encapsulates gen-z. They have so much access to information and have so many strong opinions. But they lack wisdom and empathy. It's one thing to judge someone or have an opinion on something because you learned about it somewhere. But to actually possess wisdom and empathy - that only comes with time and experience.
Matt Damon said in an interview on the Jake's Takes UA-cam channel that he remembers shooting that scene very well and that director Gus Van Sant was satisfied with two or three takes, but Robin wanted to do more. So they did around seven or eight takes.
It’s taken me about ten years to dedicate time to find this bench in Boston. Surreal moment to sit here and finally start the next leg of my journey ❤ Thank you Boston for everything.
I visited Boston last year and found the bench and sat on it looking out over the pond reflecting, it was surreal as well sitting on that bench thinking back to Robin’s incredible monologue.
We all yearn for a mentor like this. Even really hard case dysfunctional kids or criminals or whatever - everyone putting on a tough act and being destructive to themselves and others, just crying out for such a mentor. Unfortunately though, oftentimes even when confronted with such a mentor as Sean here, some people would be so damaged, they would be incapable of recognising the wisdom Sean is imparting and might even just interrupt him and say "F off". Some people get so lost they can't even hear wisdom being gifted to them.
Yep some people's egos are so big the ego won't let me say anything to jeopardize it's fragility and instead paralyzes the person until afterwards when they may be able to honestly reflect
It’s true. There are so many young men out there with absolutely no guidance. No rite of passage. No fatherly figures at all. And then we wonder why depression, suicide, drug abuse, and general mental illness are on the rise amongst young men. We need guys like Robin Williams’ character
Just finished watch Good Will hunting again to go down memorie lane when I watch this movie when I was 19 years old back in 97 and it still hits me emotionally and mentally especially when Will was crying in Seans arms in his office for a therapy session over Wills violent upbringing as a boy. Telling 6 times it's not his fault and then emotionally crys it hits me hard inside that Will needed that Male Role Model for guidance and inspiration for a better life. 💪❤ WILL POWER
I think that lesson of male bonding is so important. Hollywood tries to emulate it, but often falls short. Men are deeply emotional and those bonds they establish early in life make them the men they are. The importance of mentorship can’t be underestimated.
One of the best movies of all time and the ending is perfect. Our imagination is more entertaining than anything we could possibly ever get on film. 10/10
I watched this movie for 1st time the other day. Someone said it was good & I knew nothing about it’s content/production/background etc. Honest to god, i was rendered speechless, in tears & completely blown away when this monologue came up. I love RW anyway, but this showed what a truly gifted performer he was. Flawless at comedy (obvs) but my word he could do deep, serious & emotional to a special level when he needed to. Up there with the greats in my opinion. In fact just Googled it and he’s #16 on IMDb greatest actress ever list. Well deserved in my opinion. Miss him a lot
Never watched this movie until now. I had to pause after this scene and collect my bearings. That had to be the best delivery. Goosebumps ran through my body… what an actor. RIP Robin Williams
Hard to describe in words but in a few it would be if you truly care for someone you need to tell them the truth even if it hurts, we are human and only our mistakes can truly learn us. Then again the meaning seems to change with every rewatch and i think thats whats so beautiful about this scene and film, it feels like its already taught me so many lessons. God rest Robbie Williams you really put everything into this.
Or maybe it's the talk every father wishes they could have with thier son, before the son learns life is more complicated than advertised and nothing can ever go back to the way it was.
I’ve sat upright at the bedside of someone I loved and yes the hospital staff knew that the term ‘visiting hours’ didn’t apply to me. Blessed to have someone to love that hard ❤
This is a great movie. Matt played a great role but I think Robin was the genius in it. The acting world feels empty without him. May he rest in peace. Thank you for this video.
One of Robin William's finest performances. But I think Matt Damon was good too, seeing the change in him from defensive defiance to realizing the truth of what he was hearing, and the arrow hit home, and he was silent. But you can feel the intense emotion in the silence.
This movie. Ugh. It breaks my soul every time I watch it. I have no idea how Matt and Ben could have written such a brilliant script at such a young age, but they did it. This is still my all time favorite movie. And the best acting Robin Williams ever did. An absolute masterpiece.
And to think the man sitting next to him on that bench, the one he was talking to, was, at the time, a 27-year-old man who co-wrote that brilliant screenplay with his costar and friend. That said, there are certain monologues, especially those out of Robin's mouth, that are so heartfelt and brilliant, that they can make you think, "Was this in the script or is this coming from him?"
I just visited Boston and sat on that bench in Robins spot a couple days ago. Had to actually look around to find it but when I saw it I could tell it had an aura unlike any of the other benches. An experience I will always cherish!
“Someone who could level you with her eyes. That God put an angel on the Earth just for you” such a beautiful way to describe the feeling of finding your soulmate
Robin Williams… a national treasure of bringing laughter and pulling on heartstrings with unassuming talent for dramatic/serious level acting… Miss him so much
When I'm feeling down, I play this scene. It reminds me that life as many twists and turns. Robin Williams is my guiding light. R.i.p my friend. I'm a scared shitless kid.
This is just so brilliant how Williams' character begins breaking through Will's defenses. Will thrives on the having power, power that he never had during his abusive youth. Power he wields through his intellect. He'd toy with any shrinks trying to 'understand' him. But Williams comes at him from a completely different angle, one he'd never encountered. There was no fake caring. Just a simple, "if you don't want to be honest and open with me, you're not worth my time". Forcing Will to confront himself.. does he really want to get better. Every scene between Williams and Damon, after this one, simply choke me up. For how honest they are.
Robin Williams is one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever known in creation. Some things cannot be faked even for actors. Things such as beauty and love cannot be faked. May God grant you peace and love and rest in the highest Heaven known to creation Mr. Williams. You have earned your wings🙏🏻😇

Robin Williams was so amazing at playing heartbroken characters. He was fantastic in Patch Adams too.
Fisher King is another great example of this.
Watching this movie now on Netflix, it's been a few years since I last watched it. What a masterpiece.
RIP to such a brilliant and talented man and a beautiful human being. His Oscar for this role was so well deserved. The depth of emotion he went into in these scenes with Matt Damon, were phenomenal. It’s not your fault…
Its not your fault
When you love someone - you tell them the truth. Robin loved him (will) and talked to him straight in the one of the most iconic scenes of all time.
That monologue could not have been done like that by anyone but Robin Williams; watching him do his thing is absolutely amazing
This scene is one of the best written in the history of cinema. YET, it was even better acted by Robin. I pity anyone who hasn’t seen this movie.
I was 18 in 1997 and only just finished watching it earlier today. Wow! 😯 🎆
Well observed and written, you opened my eyes more. Thank you!
R.I.P. Robin Williams. This scene alone made me appreciate his craft even more. At times, it still feels surreal. 💯❤️
Hard to think of a better monologue than this.. Robin was my favorite actor. RIP ❤️
As I have looked back on the many successes of Robin, I see someone as grounded and desirous of showing the human spirit. That is a very special talent that few bring to the screen. This monologue exemplifies the talent of Robin and his extraordinary work. It’s sad he’s gone, RHIP.
How I wish Robin Williams were still here. He was a gift to us all.
There’s talks about commissioning an artist to create a bronze statue of Robin and place it on that bench, so people can go and sit with him. 😊👍
No wonder Robin Williams won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in this movie.
It’s important in my life that I come back to this video every now and then. Feel like It’s good to humble myself and remember what really matters.
His passing is so sadly poetic. Pain is pain. Don’t underestimate others pain that can be hidden behind the biggest jokes or smiles.
We didn't have this writing back then either... This is just exceptional and rarity regardless of era.
This movie had the best script and delivery of any movie that I've ever seen. Still touching after all these years.
I love how silent Will is…. He’s truly absorbing each word and for once, he can’t come up with a response. Sean broke him down within 3 minutes.
‘Your move chief.’ You can hear the invisible mic drop.
There is a recent interview with Matt Damon where the interviewer says he visited the bench, took a picture, and saw that someone has carved that line into the bench.
I sure miss Robin. He could do it all...I was lucky enough to meet him once 32 years ago. He was truly a genuine person.
Finest piece of acting in one scene ever!
This speech was supposedly on one take. No cuts or second attempts. Incredible scene.
Matt Damon said in an interview on the Jake's Takes UA-cam channel that he remembers shooting that scene very well and that director Gus Van Sant was satisfied with two or three takes, but Robin wanted to do more. So they did around seven or eight takes.
"god put an angel on earth just for you.. " exactly how i feel about my wife.
God bless you!
It’s taken me about ten years to dedicate time to find this bench in Boston. Surreal moment to sit here and finally start the next leg of my journey ❤ Thank you Boston for everything.
The parks name?
@@gmanzano89gmBoston Public Garden, next to the Common
I visited Boston last year and found the bench and sat on it looking out over the pond reflecting, it was surreal as well sitting on that bench thinking back to Robin’s incredible monologue.
This movie changed my life...made me decide to chose another option in life's journey and it has made all the difference...truly some Good Medicine!
One of the greatest scenes in movie history 👏
That resulting tensions when a perceptible gap arises between expectation and reality is when wonder starts. Very beautiful scriptwriting.
"It's alright". So subtle, yet to powerful
One of the best monologues ever in the cinematic history!! Sir Robin..you are dearly missed everyday..!!
One of Robin William's finest performances. But I think Matt Damon was good too, seeing the change in him from defensive defiance to realizing the truth of what he was hearing, and the arrow hit home, and he was silent. But you can feel the intense emotion in the silence.
Ten years gone today, miss you still. I’m watching this movie to remember him today and every year on the anniversary of his passing
what a complete legend. The world misses you Robin
This movie.
Robin Williams could of only played this role. And miss Doubtfire. Incredible actor
Robin Williams was a Genius to other geniuses... and the world is a lesser place with him no longer in it. Godspeed, sir.
What a wonderful thing if each of us could be told at some point in our life that what we think we know is incomplete by someone who truly cares.
One of the best actors ever to walk this planet. And Matt Damon.
The writing perspective with Robins delivery was a brilliant spin on Matt's character.
“Someone who could level you with her eyes. That God put an angel on the Earth just for you” such a beautiful way to describe the feeling of finding your soulmate
One of best scenes of all time in movie history
Coming straight from Robin's heart. He was everyone's hero, and we will never forget him. Love you always, Robin
This really might be the most honest and great acting in a dramatic scene, ever. Robin Williams a true legend.
Robin Williams… a national treasure of bringing laughter and pulling on heartstrings with unassuming talent for dramatic/serious level acting…
Miss him so much
Brilliant writing and acting. RIP Robin. Hope you’re finally at peace
When I'm feeling down, I play this scene. It reminds me that life as many twists and turns. Robin Williams is my guiding light. R.i.p my friend. I'm a scared shitless kid.
One of my favourite films, one of my favourite actors and one of the best, strongest, emotional scenes ever filmed. RIP Robin.
It's an unbelievable scene, I found myself shaking my head multiple times out of disbelief of how great Robin was.
Rest In Peace, Robin Williams. Miss you! 😇💜💚
One of the best movie scenes ever! If not the best. Miss you robin
There's a huge difference between knowledge and wisdom and folks we got a front row ticket to see it right here.
This is the type of speech that can turn a narcissist into the most humble human being
Exactly this!
Has always been my favorite movie. Touches the soul in all its messiness and rawness. It showed me in that authenticity, lied the greatest love.
I love this scene so much, because will realizes that Sean can actually help him. This movie is incredible
