Many decades ago I went deep down the rabbit hole of New Wave in my first few years of high school
I always found Robert Smiths voice so unique and it sounds no different live to the studio version.
I love this song, I have been been a fan of The Cure since their early days and have seen them live a number of times...once was at The Sydney Opera House during the Vivid festival, where they performed their first 3 albums in their entirety, all with band member changes, then an intermission, followed by an hour and a half of their most well known tracks. It was a perfect performance lasting well over 3 hours.

Wow, that was genuinely amazing! Also, I had never thought of Midnight Oil and The Cure as having anything in common but this performance reminded me of early-mid 80's Midnight Oil in ways I don't understand.
I feel old. I saw Peter Garrett and the early Oils in a pub in Perth around 1976. We dropped in for lunch and not many in the audience. It was like the genesis of something very unique. And, yes, he danced the same way then as he does now. ☺️👏

Another band that I’ve never seen any live footage of, but it was unmistakably The Cure.
Really cool to see them working as a 3-piece, as I’d always assumed that they’d had keyboard players from the very outset.
Robert James Smith was born in Blackpool on 21 April 1959, so he was 22 in 1981.

The version on Show (recorded in Detroit) - is amazing. It has an extra verse and shows how the song evolved as a result of this very concert. In later shows it has a lot more breakdowns and solos - which was a direct throwback to what happened here.
(That's also some fans underwear he has on his head).

I saw the 3 piece Cure in 1983 at Sands Royal Antler Hotel in Narrabeen on Sydney's Northern Beaches.
I was 22 and life was exciting.

Very interesting, experimental song. You're right, they do like the depressing lyrics with upbeat melodies. Which is why I like most of their songs that I hear.

Not sure if you have seen them but over the last week I saw two great videos. Dylan covering Neil Yonge Old Man at Madison Square gardens and Neil young covering Dylan’s blowing in the wind.

I think that might be the best of the Cure's songs, really good performance here. But, if I had to make a choice, the studio recording is even more creepy and claustrophobic, more skin-tingling.

Hi it steve in uk again huge music fan love nightwish and the cure .seen the cure live to great band got all the cure cds dvds rareities even from there early days when they was called easy cure and when they did joint collaboration with siouxsie and banshees they was called the glove album called blue sunshine .love the cure .a forest is a classic legendary track .and they still goin now since 1977 .hope you guys ok

I had a love/hate thing with the cure too, but only because a friend played them over and over again,full boar, on a very long trip in a car. I ended up with a rotten headache and couldn't bare to listen to them for years.
Anyway, this one is one of the best, along with love cats and close to me, for me anyway. 😘💖

Wish we could do some Sisters of Mercy in that genre but would get three views at best and two of them would be Alex and I!

I had to google to see who Robert Palmer was. I was born in the 70s but thats not a name I am familiar with. Amazing song by The Cure though. A Forest, Seventeen Seconds, Secrets, are some of my absolute favorites.
The Cure are like Tim Burton movies. Such sweetness and romance amongst the depression and death!

Very much appreciate the lyrics. Not terribly significant for this song, but almost all of The Cure’s lyrics are amazing. If you liked this I think you might appreciate Charlotte Sometimes, Cold or Lament.
By the way, those were really good notes so kudos to Alex who wrote these I believe. I have to say that notes are a weak point for me, my notes are usually quite bad. It's just not a strength of mine.

This song did nothing for me being an old man from Canada. My punk experience was a local band from Hamilton called teenage head. The problem for me with the punk scene was socially we were not exposed to the hardships that led to the scene in Britain.
The song was about loss.
