I hope folks enjoyed this week! There was a couple of songs what I might have swapped into different places but there was no decent recording of it, but at least the lads know a bit more about our bard now!
Thanks Chris. Love your work.
This was lovely, thanks for all your hard work, with all,our comments, they maybe get it now
Great week Chris, have really enjoyed it and as these weeks are supposed to do, it has inspired me to investigate further. Thanks also to Alex and George for sprinkling a bit of pixie dust over the presentation. It’s going to be a long fallow period but hope everyone has a great break and comes back firing on all cylinders for ‘season two’.
Really appreciate your work 😊
Chris you legend. Can we get a week 2 cos we all need more Paul Kelly in our lives.
I drive past the silos, and the non functioning clock every day on my way to work. I can never drive past it without remembering a day in 1988, on an RMIT Student Radiographers "Booze Cruise" up the Yarra on a party boat. We were all pissed. My alternababe girlfriend (later wife, until cancer took her) was taking deep drags on a Benson and Hedges Special filter, because another friend had pierced the top of her ear with an ordinary earring! That's how drunk we all were. She was shaking with pain and cold. "Matt.... it hursts SO MUCH!!"
Then this song came on the boat's PA. We were just passing the silo. Everyone started singing along, even my lovely Susan. The Clock flashed up 11degrees, and the boat went fucking wild.
Sorry for your loss, fkcu cancer.
Hard to convey how hard it is to sound this good at the 'G ... for contrast look at how Meatloaf sounded.
Asking someone to listen to Meatloaf’s MCG performance could be considered abuse. 🤪

This.
It’s one thing to take perverse pleasure in visitors trying to come to terms with our wildly shifting weather, but to make them endure that performance is cruel. I think it may have been outlawed by the Geneva Convention.
Strangely Leaps and Bounds seems to hit Aussies right in the feels, it just captures the feel of Sundays spent in the city.
How has Neil Finn looked like a 3rd year uni student for the last 30 years, and yet Paul Kelly looks like he should be picking cans out of garbage cans for the last 30 years
He's like a national icon. just wholesome and ingrained into most Aussies psyche.
'Wasn't as emotionally pulling as some'
For an expat Melburnian it was!!!
Nice to see the Bull sisters.
Back in about 93, I used to go to my nearest music shop, Music City/Drum City in Greville Street Prahran, opposite from the Continental Cafe, you know Paul used to perform at.
Used to be open all weekend and you could buy strings, picks, stick, skins, whatever. One hot sunny Sunday morning I showed up there, and it was empty. Shuttered. I'd literally bought a delay pedal the previous afternoon! Cleaned out overnight. Gutted, I started heading back toward home to see Vika walking toward me. She was probably heading to the Continental for a latte and their famous eggs bene.
"Vika!" I said, pointing to the gutted shop. "Do you know where this shop has gone?"
"Mate!" she replied, "how the fuck would I know? I'm a fucking singer!"
And yes, that actually happened.
Paul Kelly, the Bull sisters then Neil Finn. If I fall off the perch now it will be as a happy man.
Was great seeing these two legendary artists at the Sydney Opera House, unforgettable!
I believe the clock and the silos are now heritage listed -thank goodness because everyday when I drive past them this song is in my head and that's how it should be for generations of Melbournians to come. 😁
Much appreciated the time and thought Chris put into this week, thanks Chris, Alex and George, very nostalgic week, specially for us Aussies. Good to see such great commentary from first time watchers/listeners, so many of our musicians deserved to be recognised among the giants in the world music industry, better late than never. 😘👌💞
Top stuff, Chris. A great set of choices from an impossible task.
Thanks to you gents for taking the time to listen to Paul. Glad you enjoyed him.
Loved the last 5 days, great reaction. Shout out to Chris as well. Cheers boys.
I saw the Paul and Neil concert. It was truly amazing and tears were shed
I loved Neil’s gag/tale about his mums predilictions
The first track was a very fun rock song, which I truly was entertained by. The second track was absolutely incredible. Great writing with Neil Finn thrown in for good measure! Really loved it.
I'd recommend you both as hourary Australians. You get us. You appreciate our musical talent. You get my vote!

Linda / LindyLu from Oz.
My gosh, what a fabulous performance of "You Can Put Your Shoes Under My Bed"! (Neil's small error on the keys towards the end of the song didn't even matter, that's how great it was!) Happily heading over to Patreon to catch the rest of the week. Thank you, Chris!
Paul Kelly is Australian, Neil Finn is a New Zealander together they are Antipodean… which is how Tim Finn described himself. It’s the best description I can think of.🐨
Two great performers & two great songwriters.
To Her Door !!
100,000 people in that stadium on the day. The reason why Kelly made the point about Andrew McLeod the great indigenous player for the Adelaide Crows who won the Norm Smith (the award for best player in the Grand Final) in the Adelaide Crows' two wins in the 1990s is that he (Kelly) is originally from Adelaide and barracks for them. Adelaide were playing in this grand final against the Richmond Tigers, and the song was written about a time in the early 1980s when Paul Kelly was living in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond in a shared house literally a stone's throw from the MCG. Richmond, as it happened beat Kelly's beloved Crows to win this grand final and the after-match entertainment included the Killers singing various hits including "Mr Brightside". There's a youtube video with one of the Richmond stars from the game, a forward (like a striker in soccer) called Jack Riewoldt being invited on stage and singing along reasonably competently with Brandon Flowers. Apparently he was always a huge fan of the Killers and it was his go to song for karaoke, and so he got to sing it after just winning a grand final.
the band were from the SBS TV program Rockwiz. maybe check out their version of The Weight
I went to a show on that tour. They played each other’s music and had the audience spellbound for over 2 hours. Great memories
Neil Finn and Paul Kelly concert together at Opera House was recorded and released on DVD it's called " Goin' Your Way". I watch it quite regularly to this day and never tire of it. Absolutely brilliant.
A quick note on "You Can Put Your Shoes Under My Bed", and I don't know how true this story is, but it is a great story that sums up Paul Kelly very well. Apparently that song was heard in Nashville, and thought it could be a surefire, 100% guaranteed hit. But Paul was told he had to change the word spastic out, because the Americans couldn't handle it. He refused, that is the song, if you don't like it, too bad!! Again, don't know how much truth is in that story, but it one that sticks with me!! Great week!! Paul Kelly week 2 coming soon?? 😂😂
I've always thought Leaps and Bounds was about Melbourne in winter, not footy per se - but that's the beauty of music; you can make of it what you like 😊 As for Neil Finn ... just brilliant.
It is. An interview with PK in the late 80's when people wanted him to play at the then VFL Grand Final he said he wouldn't do it because he knew they'd want him to play leaps and bounds because they think it's about sport, but it's about a new love affair when he was living at a run down flat on Punt Road Hill. I think it was the woman who first gave him the dodgy substance. Probably why he was stumbling around with his feet not touching the ground.
Beware, are you ready, Kerrang released an interview of “Nightwish have announced details of their 10th album, Yesterwynde“ - 21st of May comes out the first single from the Album..
We don't claim either Finn brother as Australian, but Neil is hugely respected here as is Paul. Wonderful music.
Enjoyed the week. One song was not my cup of tea. But the rest were really good most enjoyable. Really enjoyed the musicianship.
Enjoy your time away. Hopefully in your next session you can look at expanding the play list
Take care. Gordon Lightfoot the patriots dream. Canadian railway trilogy.
Looking forward to seeing the new home of the thanesmen
Glad you enjoyed it
@@TheThamesmen if you want a tune to break up your day check out a Tina Turner. And Bryan Adams. It’s only love great tune great emotion great Canadian showing some Character and feelings for each other Tina flashing a bid smile. Worth the watch.
Hope you are enjoying your break. One more for your enjoyment. Duane Allman play slide on Aretha covering the weight
@@TheThamesmen Why didn't PK sing "If not now"? Not the successful subject matter he hoped for, said over 60% of Australians.
Every time I come along the freeway, I see the silo and think of this song, it is so Melbourne. I have seen it live at the MCG. And you know for us it is kinda emotional, cos it’s our town.
If you want to get a better idea of the context of this song then find the clip where they perform it on top of the silo they mention.
The MCG holds about 100K fans for the AFL Grand Final so a huge crowd. Melbourne is the Sports Capital.
It was huge!
You should check out Matt Finish, in my opinion one of Australia's greatest live bands.
Aussie bands. Choir Boys, Silverchair and singer Guy Sebastian. Love your review, please.
Chris does it again. Leaps and Bounds is so Melbourne it sips wanker coffee while speeding past East Richmond station 😁
The only wanker coffee in Melbourne is from Starbucks or McChucks.
@@sean---the-other-one Agreed. Just a joke man.

@@sean---the-other-one 👍
Finn just murdered a great song. I’m not a big fan of his but our children liked him when they were little. I didn’t think he would be capable of whatever that was.
I think this song loses a bit for audiences that it doesn't resonate with. It's probably his most well known and loved track, but it holds a special place in our hearts.
As the footy players say, keep giving 110% lads. Great week again. Well done Chris. Leaps and Bounds one of my favourites.
Check out.....Morning of the Earth from 1972
The Neil Finn song.... Not everyone can turn a slightly saucy comment into a sweet romantic sounding song... also there is a song you can look into with Paul McDermontt and Gatsy. Doing the song Stone Crows. They are playing it in a stairwell. Gorgeous song.
Paul Kelly was using the Rockwiz house band.
As they played with Paul first, it's more that Rockwiz borrowed the Paul Kelly band!
This is in 2017, when the Adelaide Crows got beaten by the Richmond Tigers. Crows last Premiership flag was 1998 and they also won in 1997. Andrew McLeod won the Norm Smith medal both years. I hate both teams, go the Mighty Blues!
That day in September in 2017 was sensational!!! Go Tiges
Nope, you’ll see a couple of people in the background wearing an orange, it was 2019 - I was there. This was the only good part of the day (apart from Jezza kicking the opening goal) all downhill after that.
2017 The Killers were pre (& post) game entertainment.
@@ichabodnoodle9595 I initially typed 2019 then edited it. Thats the problem with being 4 Jack Daniels in on the way to a good to a good night out. Yeah you are right. I shouldn't post comments while drinking.
Gentlemen was sitting here at the table waiting for the next artist when it clicks in you are on holidays hoping you are enjoying your time off to recharge your batteries. I was going to limit interaction but then I began to realize why am I hesitating. At my age my inappropriate go your own way is expected
Got one for you perhaps the best cover album out there
If you have check out Aerosmith. Honking on Bowbo (sp) hope you enjoy it. If time would love to hear your reaction to Teenage Head they were our local band and started to make waves in NewYork when their guitar player was in a serious car accident that did major Damage to his back putting the band off the grid.
Brian Adams with Tina Turner duet on it’s only love must see with emotion guitar fill pure emotion must see.
Take care enjoy your time out of the booth
Last one Humble Pie at Fillmore West I believe.
Well, thank goodness for the bonus. Probably just my view, but the first track was below par for PK, hints of retread and some stock phrases. Not keen on the latter track either, but it was a well performed and written song even if not my taste.
Been an enjoyable week, thank you to the three (or more) of you.
What a marvellous song the last one, Neil's voice and piano playing sublime, Paul's harp sounded sooo good...the only downside was when I put you two Muppets on full screen, scared the living daylights out of me..😂😂😂
Thanks Chris😢😊
latest news hot off the press . cold chisel reformed and touring again after 50 years .
Neil Finn is a Kiwi lads!
Is that different?

@@andrewmccluskie2682No, it’s just a thing that - even when your nation has lost colonial power or other kinds of influence - it takes a long period of time for the inhabitants to correct their world view with reality. Brexit is a good example, mashing colonies together on the basis of elite colour spectrum is another.
Always nice to see Ashley Naylor on Guitar, as he often is with Paul Kelly. He’s now a Guitarist in ‘The Church’, though he first came to prominence with his Band, ‘Even’, in the mid 90s. They had some great releases, like, ‘Black Umbrella’, ‘No Surprises’, ‘Shining Star’, or ‘Electric Light’, to name a few. They wear their influences on their sleeve like ‘Oasis’ did back then, but with that Aussie sound, and it evolved over the years. I’m sure Chris would be quite aware of them.

Look, these days it seems we let anyone in 😂 I think you've enjoyed enough Aussie music to almost qualify as honorary Aussies 😀
Haha, Chris is going to roll his eyes at this, but I have gone through my life thinking that Leaps and Bounds was about Cricket, not AFL. Sometimes even my cloak of shame can't cover my ignorance.
Alex and George, thank you for giving Australian artists excellent exposure from extremely credible hosts. I love your work. I also like how respectful you are when you can't really understand how important sport is in the Australian psyche, you still gave Leaps and Bounds the respect it deserved.
This love of sport can motivate artists to write songs that are lyrically targeted at a specific audience, but you can, as non-Australians, still get an understanding of how impactful the songs are, just by their delivery. You don't have to understand what the lyrics mean to understand that they are important. We sometimes see this level of songwriting from bands that sing in languages other than English. Some artists can deliver emotion and feeling without the listener really understanding what is being said. Paul Kelly just did this in Leaps and Bounds.
The second video, I have never heard that song before, but I am going to have to track it down, just to see the variance in how it is performed. Lyrically, (I need to listen to this again, but) I didn't feel it was that strong; however, Neil Finn's vocal delivery and piano playing was magnificent and turned what I suspect was an album filler track, into a showstopper.
Alex and George, Leaps and Bounds was performed, I assume, at the half time break at the AFL Grand Final. There would be around 90,000 people there for the game, but you are right it's really hard to find a way to get your sound across the massive playing area of the MCG. A fun fact, you saw Meatloaf getting booed off stage at a festival in Reading, to the point the crowd threw bottles of urine at him. It seems that there is a common theme, about 10ish years ago Meatloaf performed at the AFL Grand Final half time break and a similar thing happened. His performance was terrible, and the 90,000 strong crowd let him know he was shite.
Alex, in one of your videos you mentioned that your dad had played at the Budokan, that's very cool. I have played several times at the MCG, a few times at the old VFL Park and 10ish times at the old Princess Park (now Ikon Park). Sadly, I had no instrument in my hands, it was just junior representative football. Your dad still wins lol.
Have a great break guys. I'll see you in a couple of months.
Don't worry Len, it's not about either! As for You Can Put Your Shoes Under My Bed, it may be a little light on the lyrics but the line, "No one else could have such grace and be so spastic." always resonated with me and some of the ladies that have been in my life. Must have with Neil too for him to choose that one!
@@christhecurator Chris, that is the only lyric I remember from the song. I don't quite get it, perhaps we can discuss it over a beer sometime.
I haven't gone to the Day Six on Patreon yet, but I will tomorrow. So far, I am amazed by the lyrics of Paul Kelly. I am a word person, more than a music person, which is why I own two guitars, but can't play either.
Chris, I don't want to put you on the spot. but Paul Kelly has a lot of albums. If I was to buy three Paul Kelly albums, which would you recommend?
@@lencooke944 Honestly, just get the Songs from the South, it's a double best of album. Forty three songs and if something grabs you head to the album it came from. Then get his autobiography, where he uses songs to start each chapter, one of the best music autobiographies I've read. If that seems a bit too cheap of an answer, actual albums Comedy, Gossip and maybe Words and Music. That's two early-ish career ones and one mid-late. But hopefully some of the more interesting stories!
In fairness, he’s spent half his life in Australia, and we adore him as our own…
But Neil Finn is a born and bred Kiwi…
New Zealand were happy to give us Russell Crowe, because he’s a bit of a prick…
But we can’t, in good conscience, steal Neil Finn…
You’ve been gone for a while. When you return please have a laugh at Randy Felt Face buys a bookcase on Gumtree
Around this stage of the five days of Paul Kelly is when people are gonna start getting annoyed about what Chris hasn't yet chosen to showcase. Me included. He could have bowled them over with Kelly hits, rather than with Kelly's deep cuts.
Well to be fair check out tracks we have already done by Paul and then start asking for week 2!
@@TheThamesmen My comment reads harsher than i intended - really enjoyed the week
Is it too soon to ask for week 2 of PK?
Never too soon to ask! Will just take us a while to get to it!

Has Paul Kelly or Neil Finn ever written a Bad Song??.....The Answer is NO
I’m going to be that annoying Kiwi, and just point out that Neil Finn is not an Australian but rather a New Zealander 😄
The question is not who dunnit, but WHY?
George is going to get murdered for calling Aussie Rules "rugby".
Not if they heard him correctly. He said " rugby or Aussie rules" or being important there.
