Yeah, I don't like that after the Defiant was destroyed, they just replaced it with another totally identical one, even changing the new ship's name to Defiant.

I remember reading starfleet core of engineers novels for years and was so disappointed that the ship was not a engineering vessel , but it made sense when I looked back upon the novels and realized that the ship was more like a ambulance service in a way because it was the genius engineers that made the stories work.
Saber class always made the most sense to me. The dominion war should have been 20-50 sabers for each galaxy and excelsior class. From what we see depicted it was more like 2-5.

Hi Spacedock. Awesome video. Can you guys do a video on the Utopia Planitia shipyards? It feels there’s little info on it out there and this video had the most detailed footage I’ve seen on the Utopia Planitia shipyards (around 1:45).
And one underrated stat, *construction time and resources.* _How many Sabers did it take to build a Defiant,_ they are both compact and have a small crew requirement. But really unless it's more than three Sabers per Defiant, it's worth it to make the Defiant if just pure combat performance and damage dealing is the only requirement. And if the "cost" are comparable, then just pump out Defiants.
@@casbot71 Even if the material cost isn't that much different, the Saber class might require less engineering expertise. The Defiant was a failure of a mass produced ship because it required so much maintenance.
Did it? It was in the battle from the beginning and was one of the last ships standing. It survived for a long time - as long as it took the Enterprise to get from the Romulan Neutral Zone to Earth. It also wasn't destroyed - heavily damaged but it survived, which is really impressive considering the ship was so small. Considering the firepower and survivability packed into a tiny ship - there should have been an entire fleet of these things. 95% of the ships being built during the dominion war should have been Defiant classes - the war would have gone a lot better.
It's important to note that the Defiant class was designed to operate in wolf pack squadrons of a dozen or more ships and we never actually see her in that capacity.
exactly, You can make 2 to 4 Defiant class ships compared to a larger ship. Each one has the fire power of a Galaxy class as well a large amount of fortitude. Less crew and fast impulse level speed and maneuverability.... it would be much better to send 60 of these than say 25 larger ships.
1:08) It was said that the main deflector was on decks 8 & 9. The list of features listed SIX decks. It's more like a destroyer escort(DDE). 2:57) On at least 3 episodes of ST: TNG, Captain Picard stated that the USS Enterprise -D was the first of its type. That makes it an USS ENTERPRISE -D CLASS.
For the love of all that is good and right on the internet, will people check the channel before making requests? I swear 60% of requests seem to be for stuff that was already covered.
@Spacedock I first discovered your channel because of a recommendation from ElkhartLadder. I am eternally grateful to him for this recommendation!! It would be nice if we could see a spacedock video on other animes besides Cowboy Bebop like Robotech or Mobile Suit Gundam or maybe even on the history of the space shuttle or the Jupiter 2 from Lost in Space either the t.v. show or the movie or maybe even on the ships encountered by Voyager like the Kazon or the Malon or the Vidiians or the Hirogen for example or even the ships of the races encountered by the Enterprise or seen on DS9 or Star Trek:Enterprise.
One unanswered question, can it land on a planets surface? That would aid in versatility, and just in keeping them on standby (image raiding a Federation outpost or colony and a bunch of Defiants come out of bunkers). If it can land then it opens up some options. And what is the resource cost of construction compared to a Defiant? How many of one ship type do you get for the other from a shipyard.
So if it a backwater colony world say the dura's sisters and 3 birds if prey come to take control of colony with say 4000 people on base.launching 4 sabres from cloaked bases the ageing bird of preys might as well wish for a glorious death
I appreciate that the Saber-class's phaser arrays were able to cover a wider arc than the Defiant-class. Saber-class could commit a drive by- I'm sorry, a strafing run better than the Defiant. Also, the rear-mounted photon torpedo launcher gave it an advantage over the larger Akira-class, which only had forward mounted launchers. The Saber-class could tax a pursuing vessel with a spread of torpedoes.
I would like to see a video about the Luna class. Commander Riker was made captain of the USS Titan a Luna class was never seen on the movie, I had a Google to ship to see what it looks like. I'd love to see one about the larger dominion ships or the sovereign class as we saw it in First Contact but don't know too much about it. Love the videos, keep it up!
I thought this ship, along with some of the other ones that first appeared in the movie, were meant to be ships that were always there just never seen before. Hence a lot of them used the same windows and hull textures as the older Galaxy class.
Only because they built like 10,000 of them and there are literally too many to retire all at once. Even at 80 years old the Miranda class, with modernized systems and weapons, is a perfectly serviceable patrol ship.
I honestly always thought they should have used them to help the Klingons against the Breen weapon... Their energy dissipator's scary but they still have to hit you, first, and those flingey-field-looking things don't appear to actually move all that fast. :)

The Sabre is a bit less of a case of being "all weapons mags and engines" as the Defiant, but are largely the same type blast boats. That is not a bad thing for a ship meant to go fight. Ships like that exist so you can go be peaceful (Lazy) on your big majestic cruisers.
Deflector Arrays on Federation Starships are not meant to protect said ships from "angle of attack" as you state in this video; the Deflector Arrays are actually for navigational purposes. The defensive shielding of Starships that do actually protect from attack are generally all encompassing for all ships.
Fair enough, though targeting a ship's main deflector wouldn't necessarily be a great idea. In terms of combat worth, the main deflector is pretty far down the list of priority. Also, the main deflector again isn't the source of defensive shielding in Starfleet ships. One thing that bugs me about Federation design has always been the placement of the main bridge, why put your c&c in a perdition that if your shields fail your entire command staff can be killed? It's not like it's needed so they can look out into space they have viewscreens for that
For some reason some contentcreators here on UA-cam still seem to think that this ship is about 365 meters in length, possibly because that's what it says in Memory Alpha or the DS9 Technical Manual. but what they fail to see is at least Memory Alpha has put on a warning that the dimensions used are actually those of the Norway class. I mean, come onn ! A crew of 40 people for a ship that's supposed to be longer and wider than a Constitution class ? Give me break ! ven one of the designers said the went for a length of around a 190 meters for the footage..
You are correct, however the 40 man crew was for the ship as launched. as it was modified and refitted with more scientific labs to add to the ships flexibility. I think the crew should be boosted to 60
Starfleet: Here's our new pocket escort, we took a Miranda, streamlined it, removed the explodium and added some armour! Far less red-shirty!
It is unfortunate on STO the Sabre class is not very good
