Barry, I just ran into this one and that is a spectacular looking fly. The intricate thread work up at the front looks to be quite the challenge but a beautiful result for sure. Nobody bends feathers better than you!

Thank you Barry. It is a beautiful and effective pattern. In Spain it is known as "Pardón de Meana" (Rhithrogena genus). It is the one known as March Brown, but that uses the feather of Gallo de León (Coq de Leon) in a wing that recalls the Comparadun style. His tying dates back to the 90's. Beautiful fly. Mr. Clark I tied this one up in a bigger size for fishing smallmouth during the willow fly hatches we have in our lakes here in the south. This pattern is really challenging to tie but I think I did a really good job. Something I have realized from tieing panfish jigs and bass jigs is once you cross over to the fly tieing world your eyes are the most important part of tying a good fly. Unfortunately, my eyes with age are not as sharp as they were when I was younger but I make due. I do know trying to tie some of your patterns have made me a better jig designer because I gained more patience which translated into finer detail on my crappie and bass jigs. Watching you tie your patterns is therapeutic for me. Thanks for being so willing to share your knowledge and skills with us viewers. You Sir are a legend. Unbelievable skills and knowledge. Further to my previous comment, and after maybe two dozen (always given away). I love making these because they are SO ferociously demanding. More recently, for the two prominent tails, I've been using the long whiskers from hares' masks. They bob the fly up nicely, and are less inclined to kink than stripped CDC stems. They're even better when soaked overnight in Nikwax to make them VERY buoyant.
An (arguably) even better version of this fly can be made using CDC stacked behind the CDL in the Petitjean stacker method.
Losing one of these (millionaires only) flies high up in an alder tree is a matter for great weeping and gnashing of teeth. If it means felling the occasional alder to recover a fly - so be it.

Hey Barry you rascal, what a great job on this kind of a challenge fly. Coq de Leon is such an expensive and difficult to find material, would you have a reasonable substitute ? What looks beautiful on the vise appears differently when in the water and all wet. Similar wet looks material can be acceptable . Thanks for all you show. Always a pro job.
Hi, yes a challenging pattern. I have used Whiting coq de Leon and that works fine. Whiting CDL is sold in patches so you get loads and it's a tenth of the price of the real deal, but most defiantly not the real deal but a decent substitute.

Thanks Joe, Yes I do use the TT bobbin. When you use it! Look carefully at the tip of the bobbin you have one open side and one closed side, always use it with the closed side towards you. So when you hold it in your hand keep the closed side towards you.
Marvellous. Expensive, time-consuming, and quite tricky to tie. CdeL is super stiff, and non-compliant. This video offers the best demonstration by far. Not a beginners' fly.

Awesome pattern, although it is too intricate and too heavy for Spanish style fly fishing which is the up and coming fly fishing style. Great tying.
