This is my type of pattern all day long. Stunning design with a fantastic finish. Hands down thee best type of wing in my opinion and I’ve picked up several tips watching this one Barry so thank you pal, much appreciated. I’ll never quit tying, to see something as beautiful as this emerge with a few materials and a little bit of patience (and a few swear words when it goes wrong lol) still gives me a buzz.
@@dariuswhite2543 yes if you check at fly shops you can find it. There are pastes and liquids and dessicants. I hope you take it up sir, it is a life changing hobby.

Thank you for that trick with the UV resin nozzle, I am going to get myself a couple of those and spend some quality time learning how to make Wally Wings. There are some other applications like making wings for little black stoneflies that start showing up here in the middle of Feb and some of the first big fly # 16 and 14 dries fly fishing to show up. UA-cam has become a very very good instructional tool for fly tyers. Thou I still think that for new fly tyers hands-on instruction is best, it's getting hard to make that case.
Hi George, you can also use a small tube fly tube. If you use the UV resin nozzle you must cut a few mm off the end so the opening is a little larger. Yeah. I do 17-23 international shows each year but could never reach so many tyers as I do through You Tube.
I just tied a few of these and they are very nice. Pulling two fibers only did the trick, thank you for that! I tie flies to raffle off at our Trout Unlimited meeting and go to your UA-cam site to keep the selection interesting, and increase my knowledge. Thanks Barry!
Nicely done. I tied 2 of the ww spinner pattern w/ less than ideal tools/materials and they turned out ok. One problem i had w/ both was the mallard stem pulling to one side of the top of the hook. Ive been using the tip of a ball point pen to tie in the wings which works ok but the opening is a little too big. Using utc probably isnt helping either...I'll figure it out eventually. Love the videos!
Hi Evan, If you use a little fly tyers wax on your tying thread, make a few turns 7-8 of the waxed thread over the hook shank where you are going t tie on the wings and then use the waxed thread to tie on the wings the stem should stay in the correct position. You should also find a smaller dimension tube this also helps hold the wing correctly while tying in. Good luck!
I bleached a couple peacock eye feathers and successfully tied with them for about a week.I admit to leaving them out for that length of time. Now they are cracking when I wrap the abdomen s.I am wondering if they indeed dried out and if so can moisturizing them again somehow regenerate their suppleness. As always OMG!OMG!. Thank you
Hi Michael, it shouldn't be necessary, but it does sound like that you left them in the bleach too long. Try a little moisturizer on them, not sure if it will work but...
@@Thefeatherbender thanks, I never fished or tied these flies yet I like the look and will likely tie some. I’m trying to only tie the flies I’ll actually fish though. I prefer 100 of the same fly that I know I’ll catch on rather than 100 different flies and take my chance… I fish Klinks a lot and this is a variant of that at least it looks to me to be.
I don't know where to ask so here seems to be as good as any. Have you done a video on a Loop wing pattern? I have been sorting through them with no luck. Good gosh this is a nice pattern, still watching it!
Hello Berry. Great video again. I only have a question? Is it absolutely necessary to remove the binding thread and put it on again? In my case there are always too many hairs sticking together and the fly does not look so beautiful anymore because I have problems to get under the fibers!
Hi Matthaus, Only if you wish to get a nice finish on the fly. If you do it as you suggest you always have a problem with the hackle fibres getting in the way when you whip finish.
Hi Gordon, Flank feathers from mallard and teal seam to work the best but you can use other waterfowl feathers. I have used with varying success some game bird feathers but the waterfowl are the best.
Hi Jeff, it depends how thick the stem of your flan feather is. Try first, cutting off the lowest part of the flank feather stem, the thickest part, and then try passing it through the nozzle, if it doesn't fit, cut off a couple of mm and try again.
Thank you for your quick response, will follow your instructions. Love watching your videos, been tying off and on for about 35 years and there is always new materials and methods to learn. Its a lifetime journey and not a destination for sure.Merry Christmas
Barry, as I said I know Wally Lutz. He is a big guy with a big heart. I don't think he had any idea this was going to spread as it did. For this reason I do not hate him for making me feel ham fisted when I tried these, he would not have meant this....I don't think? 😁😂 I have fingers that make men glad I am not their proctologist! Actually I think every man in Canada would pay me a dollar not to become one?....wait...there are....Holy Hell Barry I may have found something I can do! Honestly I have fuined more Wally Wings than I have completed. I am a failure! 😭
BARRY , every one is saying "what a cool fly" does it float ? NO IT DOSEN'T !!!! I tied it exactly as you did put it in a glass of water , and it sunk to the bottom of the glass........ I ENDED UP THROWING IT AWAY AND GAVE YOU A THUMBS DOWN👎 LOOKS👀ARE NOT WHAT COUNTS BARRY. YOU SEE BARRY I TIE FLIES THAT FUNCTION AND FLOAT, unless their a nymph or larva. sorry for the critique. I will try an Ahrex # 12 hook NOT A MUSTAD.
@@Thefeatherbender his critique is only so valid. Ive had duck flank feathers be pulled under by a size 12 eagle claw baitholder hook that sank like a stone. Even polypropylene on the same hook did nothing. Flank feathers should float half as well as cdc oiler puffs but it was aggressively dragged under by an arguably light hook.

Stunning. I'll build-up to the Wally Wing one day. Perhaps I'll see it done at the Flyfishers close up if this pandemic ever goes away!
