I'm all over your keep it 70s, keep it merc, approach to aesthetic. I love this Dr. Evil 007 thing valve had going on. The characters themselves do so much to make this game timeless, despite it being set in a specific time period. The silly stuff is only funny the first few times you see it, but the classic stuff looks good all the time.
All I want for Smissmas is a selection of good cosmetics, a good selection of war paints, some good maps with at least 1 map that's year round material, good unusual, and some good taunts Yeah that's a lot to ask Valve for but still one can dream
a big issue i have with something that a lot of people dont really talk about is new taunts. they arent really "taunts" anymore, theyre "emotes". Soldier putting an L on his forehead, demo shaking his butt at you, sniper crossing your name off a list, spy throwing pity money at you are supposed to make you get mad at the guy for killing you because they "taunt" you. when i die and see a bumper car with some hell portal underneath it driving away from me its just dumb because FUNNY VIDEO GAME CHARACTER DOES FUNNY ACTION
As much as I don't want to get sucked in to the argument, I don't think you can directly compare partner taunts and regular taunts, partner taunts can be emotes, but the same should not go for regular taunts (at least in my opinion)

As a member of the TF2 mapping community, let me tell you that a lot of mappers almost gatekeep the workshop. I keep seeing them bash you any chance they get because the same members who make maps are either the one who make cosmetics or are close friends with workshop creators. At this point we should start to wonder if we should be pointing at specific members or at the fact that everyone has become creatively bankrupt.
It's all those "TF2 Emporium" freaks. They're all one big circlejerk that pump out bog standard crap and have a laugh about it when they get added because for some reason Valve always keeps picking their shit to be put in the game.
Okay so I blanked an Altitude and Cascade, nothing of value was lost because- 1) Cascade is a mediocre competitive map RESKIN plagued by typical koth design issues 2) Altitude is an uphill battle for blu right outside of spawn, met with a first point that is defensible by a single engineer, and the map is terrible in general Added to the vanilla rotation? Yes. Garbage? Yes. That's just me.
Fair enough, I do feel like Cascade is pretty mediocre, the raised platforms near the point aren't unique enough to distinguish it too much from other KOTH maps (I even had to search it up to remember which map it was). As for Altitude, I think it is pretty unbalanced but I don't really play on it much since I just don't queue for it most of the time.

tried out a map called ctf_chimney on the TF2Maps testing server that had you escort presents from the center to the other team's chimney and it was a TON of fun. It was one of those tryhardy maps with like a dozen mapmakers and custom models/textures/sounds so there's a high chance that it'll get added, but I think they should give more solo devs a chance. The current state of maps that get added are starting to remind me of what happened with the last few Saxxys. A ton of people pile on to one mega-project, and then it's basically guaranteed that Valve will give the thumbs up to the most above and beyond stuff (see: Cursed Cove, Monster Bash, Sinthetic, Farmageddon). That turbine map gives me hope though, one guy can make something awesome without having to be part of the mapping clique

I've never looked into workshop maps, but damn that smissmas themed turbine looks phenomenal. My only complaint would be that it'd make playing on normal turbine make me wish I were playing on the smissmas one.

Looking back at the 2021 case, there IS a single item in there that would've been fine if it was the ONLY holiday-themed addition: Shoestring Santa. Damn it for being all-class (and for looking hideous on like half of those classes), but it's a fun rendition of Soldier's "Mall Santa" outfit from the comics. As for the Particulate Protector, I would have honestly been fine with that if they'd released it as a free item for everyone who logged in that month. A fun little PSA for the pandemic, plus it would've been entertaining to see all the mercs fighting with them on over the next few months, like even these murdering lunatics are making sure to abide by health and safety guidelines.
12:31 My guess is that the one janitor that works on the game has little to no prior experience of what Smissmass was and just thought it was supposed to be a Chrismas only update (that could also explain the crate from yesteryear)
I won't hold my breath for it, but I have hope that Smissmas this year won't be worse than 2021, maybe even 2020. This year's Scream Fortress, although still suffering from some modern TF2 event issues, had a much better hat lineup, and although still not great; war paint lineup. It might be a sign that although still far from grace that it once was, the selection of new content for TF2 perhaps is gradually improving once more. Really do hope for a good Smissmas in the end though, I agree with all the points in this video. Thanks for showing off some awesome, underrated creators!

This is entirely unrelated, but I really like the skins in Deep Rock Galactic, they fit really well with the game's art style and most fit well with the variety of weapon reskins the game has to offer. In case you're wondering (you probably aren't), my favourite skin is Slate as it heavily reminds me of the Civic Duty Mk.II and it's simple but decent design.
The sudden shift the Christmas-themed crap back in 2019 is PROBABLY for the same reason we've seen maps like Wutville get added: the game clearly got handed off to some low-level intern with no understanding (or care) for TF2 whatsoever. Luckily this year's recent shift away from this crap makes be hopeful that someone competent at Valve noticed what was happening and intervened.

Hey Zesty, for the longest time I've thought someone in the community should spearhead some sort of quality-listing of community maps based off actual playtesting. Since it's painfully obvious Valve can't gather the manpower to playtest the maps they add, it could offer them some much-needed guidance. If it was a big enough endeavour (with the right connections supporting it), I'm pretty sure it'd get Valve's attention.

Serious comment: i fully agree with you about reskin maps. But i will say some of them take the theme and absolutely run with it and somehow dont mess up the map in the process. I wouldnt say its a lot of them. But a few of the reskins i really dont mind. That might just be bias as i like the regular version of the map and perhaps its just that but WITH spells thats winning me over. But i definantly like the idea of it being a way to "fix" or otherwise improve outdated maps while having a seasonal theme.

To be fair, taunts were emotes when they added partnertaunts like the highfive and those are in my opinion essensial to TF2s identity.

This might be the first time I have seen Zesty actually say something nice about cosmetics. I'm so used to him trashing on war paints that him actually being nice is surprising
Watch his workshop review streams on his second channel, he talks positively about cosmetics a lot more than you'd think, and he gives actual criticism to the cosmetics that aren't obviously bait or made with zero artistic intent

oh man i remember talking to a friend years ago about a Turbine reskin based off the Teufort Mall from the comics. however, I'm not masochistic enough to learn how to use the Hammer editor, so i never really went anywhere with it. thank god someone way more talented than me got the same idea!

Hey Zesty, for the longest time I've thought someone in the community should spearhead some sort of quality-listing of community maps based off actual playtesting.
Since it's painfully obvious Valve can't gather the manpower to playtest the maps they add, it could offer them some much-needed guidance. If it was a big enough endeavour (with the right connections supporting it), I'm pretty sure it'd get Valve's attention.

I will defend 1 xmas map. pd_sawmill. xmas sawmill being a player destruction, improving the map a little and the deposit points changing from 3 places.

Serious comment: i fully agree with you about reskin maps. But i will say some of them take the theme and absolutely run with it and somehow dont mess up the map in the process.
I wouldnt say its a lot of them.
But a few of the reskins i really dont mind.
That might just be bias as i like the regular version of the map and perhaps its just that but WITH spells thats winning me over.
But i definantly like the idea of it being a way to "fix" or otherwise improve outdated maps while having a seasonal theme.
