Korg DW-8000 - Synth King "Analog Wave Expansion"

  • The Korg DW-8000 is a great souding hybrid synthesizer. However, the single cycle sample waveforms of the internal wave ROMS. are a bit outdated and not really useful. The E expansion offers another 16 waveforms of acoustic instruments. Due to the analog VCF/VCAs the Korg DW-8000 can sound like a classic analog synthesizer.
    My idea was to replace the E expansion eproms with new eproms filled with 16 classic waveforms like saw and pulse plus a few variations.
    You can download the image file of the four eproms with instructions here:

    Just bought one this week dit needs a basic repair (keys contact cleaning and battery changing), but I can’t wait to play it and download your patches :-) Thanks for your nice sounds!

    Lovely synth. I don't own one, but i have a DSS1 which share much of its technology and allows you to make your own waveforms.

    A lovely update. I have an EX-8000 so hopefully the EPROMS in the rack do not differ. Unfortunately your link just goes back to this video and not the download site...

    Just came across this when looking for info about that rare expansion (extra button and LEWD and input). Great stuff and nice video! I'm just confused, are those new waveforms stored in that special expansion? Because I have the same expansion in my DW8000, but it contains entirely different waveforms. Or did you replace the very original Korg waveforms, that came with every DW8000?

      I replaced the additional waveforms of the expansion with my own waveforms. The Korg expansion gives you a few more waveforms, but they are even more boring than the stock ones. The DW8000 is a synthesizer with subtractive synthesis, not a wanna be sampler.

      I see, that's what I assumed! I didn't check the expansion waveforms deeply in sound programming yet and in the end, as you say, there are thousands of waveforms out there, which could be tried. I definitely agree that the DW8000 is a great synth, not a wanna-be sampler. But I could imagine, that this is exactly what Korg had tried: more realistic "acoustic" instrument sounds, as Yamaha's FM synth could do. Still they all were quite far away from samplers and other modern methods. It was the best they could do and probably musicians were satisfied enough. Nowadays we consider it as unique synth sounds and we are happy as well. ;-)

    Hi Bernd! Great video & great work - thx for that!
    Do the new eproms hold those new waveforms of yours in addition to the "regular/old" ones? I'm asking regarding backwards compatibility with old preset libraries..

    • @Bernd_Bruening
      @Bernd_Bruening  2 роки тому +1

      The new EPROMs replace the old waveforms. The old presets are replaced by the new ones as well.

    Hi Bernd - this is a great idea thanks for making them available. Having looked in my EX and as there is no instruction in the read me, its probably obvious but thought i should check :) i assume this mean de-soldering the 4 128 EPROM (mine are labled C43-46) replacing with IC sockets and install with new eproms? Just a question on the waves themselves can i ask where they were derived from? And is it possible to mix and match with the factory waveforms like are they allocated like "4 to a ROM" so you could, for example keep first 4 factory wave in ROM 1 (if you have patches you want to keep) but put the new waveform roms in other slots? Sorry for all the questions but couldnt see another way to contact you. thanks

      Installation is exactly as you described. I went through thousands of single cycle waveforms I’ve found on the internet and selected my personal favorites. As far as I know you can’t mix the waveforms with the factory waveforms. My expanded DW8000 has a dedicated bank for 64 sounds made with the expansion waveforms. I don’t know how the EX8000 is organized. Hope that helps.

      @@Bernd_Bruening that's great!, thanks for answering my questiont! As an aside I really do hope someone does go step further one day and makes kit for selection of beyond 16 waveforms (I know been done been done by individuals but that level of mod beyond my meagre skills☺️). Thanks again!

    the Arturia Microfreak just got update 4.0, and they added a user wavetable. Bernd, would these be something of use for Microfreak users?

    • @Bernd_Bruening
      @Bernd_Bruening  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t know the Arturia Microfreak in detail, but if it’s able to read single cycle waveforms the ones I’ve used for the DW8000 could be of use. I suppose the Microfreak reads wav files. Search the internet, there are tons of free waveforms.

    How did he get the new waveforms into the synth? O thought it could only hold 16 dwgs waveforms???

    • @Bernd_Bruening
      @Bernd_Bruening  6 місяців тому +1

      This synth has got the E expansion by Korg Germany providing 16 extra waveforms and 64 additional patches. I then replaced the quite boring waveforms with my own selection.

      @@Bernd_Bruening can I do that with my dw8000?

    • @Bernd_Bruening
      @Bernd_Bruening  6 місяців тому +1

      @@amonster8mymother unfortunately not without an E expansion board . However, it would be possible to replace your stock DWGS waveforms with your own ones.
