    Just to make sure it is clear, you need to calibrate the Hanna with the calibration solution, not 35ppt water. The calibration solution is a conductivity solution, which is much more accurate for calibrating that type of device.

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  5 років тому +2

      Tyler Jaax correct. It was calibrated it its calibration solution provided with the meter.

    Love when you remove the plastic wrap on the display of the Icecap :P :P, good video like always ;). I love the poseidon because it's so simple to use which make me test more often, i don't really care about digit after the 0 either, but yeah if they make another version would be great. The waterproof one from Hanna is a big deal. Take that like button.

      i return poseidon ,,, twice ... after i calibrate the unit 15 minute later the reading is different ,,need to calibrate again .. and no i never touch the temperature calibration ... i dont trust my milwaukee . my pinpoint i think is accurate but slow to show the result .. i like the Hanna probably my next purchase .

  • @ReefDork
    @ReefDork 5 років тому +4

    Nice comparison - I love the precision of digital testers. The max cap looks quicker but the Hanna feels more reliable (albeit slightly irritating to have to calibrate so often). Hanna gets my vote 🙂

    Well great video but you missed the number one thing that I like about the ice cap salinity pen. Which is silly but handy I love how narrow it is at the end so that means whenever I want to calibrate it I just take my bottle of calibration solution and stick it right in there then pull it out put the cap back on and I'm done. The other salinity pens are too big to fit in the bottle. As long as I make sure there's no dirt debris or water on the pen when I calibrate and I make sure and put the lid back on Fast I'll never have to buy calibration fluid again. Lol

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  5 років тому

      Solid point! You just need to make sure that cap is on tight or you could have some evap which will swing your calibration over time :)

    Question? I have read that the hanna meter will not read your tank salinity accurately at all. Is this true Devin? Thanks

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  5 років тому

      They all read accurately in my tanks. If you dose a ton of random stuff it may mess with the conductivity of the tank. So it’s hard to say 100% for every tank.

    I Love my hanna checker but just broke after owning about a year and a half! It wont calibrate and just keep getting error. I called hanna and followed their directions to clean with carboard pieces and also used their cleaning solotion and still wont work! Its ridiculous how much the solution to calibrate costs and can only get one maybe 2 uses out of it! It would be great if they sold it in a big jar but then they couldnt make so much money off of us consumers! I like that the Milwaukee sells much cheaper solution but it costs a lot more for the unit and I also like being able to just dip the tip of the hanna in the water in the water!

    How do you find it compares to an Apex Salinity probe that has been properly calibrated (assuming you use one)? This is where I find the largest deviation in readings.

    • @ReefDudes
      @ReefDudes  5 років тому +1

      Much more precise. I have always found the apex salinity probe to be a bit flakey as it’s very susceptible to interference. I do have one but ignore the actual number and just is it as a trend line

    • @sandrarattray1202
      @sandrarattray1202 5 років тому

      @@ReefDudes Thanks... and that's also my experience. I no longer torture myself with the reading from the Apex probe and also just use it as a guide - which is helpful when traveling. Makes it easy to spot something going wonky.

      ReefDudes great job on the testing and it’s good to see the Hanna works well. I’ve seen mixed reviews based on measurements in the tank vs.freshly mixed. I was about to purchase it and saw that everyone was still using their refractometer to get baselines. Figured if they’re good enough for baselines, why play around with something so crucial as salinity.
