Actually you don't have to run water for back pressure at all...simply turn on the water like normal with the valve closed and make sure the entire hose and tube are full of water. Invert tube in tank, get rid of any air bubbles in tube then go to the sink and open the valve. The back pressure will kick in on its own, no need to run water (not practical if you have a long extension it will take forever and waste loads of water).
I adopted a 55gal tank two years ago and it came with one of these and I had no idea how to use it and became super frustrated with it. Now I feel like a fool for not looking into!! I was using it backwards and didn't know it hooked up to the sink. Been muscling water buckets forever now. Ugh. I'm so excited to use it properly. Great video! Tanks a lot!! :)
Thanks for the video. I did my first water change/gravel vac with the python today. It was easier than anticipated. the hardest part is getting the temperature of the water right as your faucet can be a lil tricky to manuver. Although I was able to get it within 1 degree.
Thank you so so much! I've been needing to do a water change on my Axolotl's 20gal (soon to be upgraded to 30gal) and I had no idea how to use the python. My parents knew but whenever I asked them to help me do a water change or if they could teach me how to use it they said "later". I've been watching other python how-to videos and I just didn't get it, and now I do! Thats so very much!
I just learned about this magical siphon . Im buying one ASAP. I used to siphon all the water into a giant 45 gallon trash can... then I would put an electric water pump into the trash can ... then drain everything down the drain . this is definitely worth a try, im tired of making water messes.
Sweet. This looks like a good buy. I was a little amused at the force of the water at the beginning of the refill process. Make sure all your plants are well rooted. Thanks for the video.
+John Shea - It's definitely a must-have, we've never looked back! We were pretty amused by the force of the water too-- the hook is best for larger aquariums like the one we worked on. It points straight down, so it may kick up gravel in shallower tanks. That said, it's a great product if you want a "hands-free" refill!
okay, I finally, (after 2 years of hauling buckets of water) bought a Python water changer kit! Wow I am so happy I finally did it! It works great! My one hour water changes now take about 10 minutes! I was a little nervous to add the water back into the tank because I normally put the water conditioner into the bucket and then pour into the aquarium. So I put some of the conditioner in first as well as half way through the fill and then a little more near the end. I have a 120 gallon tank and this is going to save me a lot of time. Thanks Big Al's! Love your store!
Thank you my mom is wanting one of these systems and I wanted to see how easy it was to hook up and run with the hook attachment this was just the kind of video I was hunting for. Thanks for being informative, easy to watch and not having annoying music overlaid lol
Ok so I received my python and watching the videos I was able to clean my tank and refil in under 10 minutes. This product is Insane. Just add water conditioner after removal of partial. Also new tanks remember to cycle the tank. Man this is a game changer. Upgrading to 125 gal from 55 gal and now looking forward to it.
I'm wanting to buy one of these, and for years I almost did,but I always wondered about the whole water conditioner issue, how it would be added to the tank,if there was a reservoir on the python to add it, I really had no idea how it worked. As many people that rave about it, I assume that the method they show here, adding conditioner as it fills, that this is safe, but still I worry. I was always told that you had to add water conditioner before you add any fresh water to the aquarium, any time you fill a bucket you had to add conditioner before the bucket of water is added to the aquarium, and this had to be repeated with every bucket of water. If I knew we could do it this way I would have just added the appropriate amount to the aquarium as soon as I drained enough water so I wouldnt have to beat myself up whether I forgot to add conditioner to a bucket of water when it usually takes about 15 buckets of water to fill mine back up. It's so easy to forget one time and I've definitely worried myself sick a few times trying to remember if I forgot one time,so I'd panic and dump several capfuls just in case.
If you're concerned about your water bill (depending on how close you are to a widow or door), you can run your Python outside and simply use gravity to move the water while cleaning your aquarium.
Good videoI picked up this water changing system a couple weeks ago...the cost was my only hesitation but after one use I was hooked. Like the tip on the extended gravel vacuum and will be looking to pick one up for my 90G Tank. My LFS did not have the water fill attachment and may have to look into that too but not in a rush. Now I use my bucket to store the Python...
i have 2 turtles in a 60 gallon tank and this thing saves my back from lugging buckets of water back and forth every 3 weeks. Best investment i've made outside my canister filter with the UV light.
You do not have to leave the water running when siphoning unless the sink is too high. You only need to do it until the water starts suctioning. I always fill using my kitchen sink, but it's too high to continue the pressure for suctioning, so I just drain into the toilet. My python is a set of 2 50 footers attached together, so it makes it super easy. edit: Also be very careful when filling. You cannot just casually turn on the sink to fill it with the valve closed at the siphon end. The pressure will straight up force the python off the sink or break your piping. (personal experience, I've had to replace the attachments more than once).
Seems like a great idea APART from that you have to have water running the whole time while emptying the tank, that's a LOT of wasted water... I've done a similar thing where I've connected a siphon which had a pump to a hose, and that hose I can just connect to the water faucet to refill the tank again. It's not pretty but it works.
So I want to ask WHEN I drain water out from my tank, do I always have to keep the water by the sink running? I mean thats the way to create pressure so the water can be sucked down the tubing. Isnt it waste of water coming out from the sink faucet?
I've hauled 5g Homer buckets around for years changing water. This video almost has me convinced to switch, especially because I'm doing EI-method dry ferts on my 60g, and that specifies a weekly 50% water change. My only reservation continues to be about water treatment- I can add Seachem Prime to the bucket I just filled and be positive I've reacted/outgassed all the Cl- and choloramines. The Python method is less precise.
+John Daly a cheaper way is go to your local hartdware store HD Lowes etc. and get the hose and make it urself. I fill up with a 5gl empty water bottle to dose the tap water before I put it in the tank. But using the hose to empty the tank out is much easier.
No you don't! I turn it on once quickly to get the suction, then turn it off. It will drain faster if you keep your tap running though, so if you need suction to do heavy-duty substrate cleaning I'd recommend it. With sand you probably wouldn't need a strong suction, but I use river rocks as my main substrate in my tank so I don't need to keep my tap running.
Depending on how close you are to a window or door, you can place the end of your Python outside (I tie mine to a post on the ront porch) and use gravity to move the water and drain the tank.
Avani is correct as long as the sink is below the water level of the tank (basically it just becomes a massive siphon). If the sink is above the tank water level, the water will just drain back to the tank
I just ordered this product, cant wait to use it,should get it by the end of the weekend just intime for my next water change... I use buckets and refill with a plastic container...lol btw I made the change to go barebottom and have gotten all the gravel out except for some pesky little pieces, with this work to get the remainder of the gravel? the gravel is tiny tiny.
I wish I had this product this past weekend. Had to setup a new tank and water change two more and I did it the "old way". Atleast I'll have this for next time. Great video

My Aqueon broke yesterday. I finally found a place here in NY that has the python I'm going to pick it up today. Too bad the water quality in my complex won't allow me to use tap water. I have to use bottled water either that or condition the snot out of it thanks Al!
You can also buy a cheap submersible pump for less than $20 from like Amazon or maybe even Big Al's that way you don't need to have the run water to drain your tank. Saves on your water bill & more environmentally friendly. That's how I use my Python & I love it.
This is exactly what I was thinking about. The system seems great, but running the water the entire time definitely makes the product a "no" as-is. How would I use it to suck up the dirty sand/gravel though, with the pump submerged, without clogging it?
A M I've never had an issue with clogging. I have the Ecoplus submersible pump from Amazon & hook up the Python to it first to drain the tank to whatever level I need for that water change. Once drained I remove the pump & use the Python as intended to vacuum the sand & fill the tank back up. Hope that helps.
I have a sprayer-style kitchen faucet. Is there any way for this to work with that? It looks great! We are upgrading to a bigger tank and this would be so much better than what we’ve been using for our little tank.
Wow, this would be helpful! I find myself carrying at least 10 5 gallon buckets back and forth, and then I spill one. Then I have to soak it up and bring out the box fan from my attic! So much work for one water change.
I get my step ladder and put it next to my tank, then I put my container of water on the top of the step ladder so that its at a higher level than my tank and simply sython the water in using gravity, simple no cost method .
God bless Lance Reyniers my friend and the inventor of the Python No Spill Clean and Fill. I met him while I was working at Hoffer's Tropic Life in Milwaukee where we both lived and worked, it was cool watching him get this apparatus off the ground! I even got a tour of the "factory"! Lance was REALLY cool! He claimed that his product "really sucked", lol! He may be gone, but his stubborn ass will NEVER be forgotten! We love you Lance, now you can ride the eternal highway in the sky! RIP ❤ 🐟
Would any substrate in the tank be fine? I’m getting an aquarium of my own and I don’t know what kind substrate would be best for the python. I would prefer to get fine gravel or sand but I don’t want the python to suck that stuff up
Having something called an “Eco-cloth” to “save paper towels” in the middle of an advert for a product that literally requires you to leave a tap running - wasting thousands of liters of water over the products lifetime - is the single most hypocritical thing I have ever seen. Theres a water crisis, we shouldn’t be cool with this!😂 Just start a siphon and put the end of that big ass tube outside. Water your plants with it or something. No need to have it constantly attached to a running tap🤦🏻♂️
The only thing thet sucks about the python or the aqueon cleaner is that they use about 3 times the amount of water you would normally use since the water has to remain on for the suction to occur. The cheapest way ive found is just to use my gravel cleaner to clean and drain into buckets and then use a cheap garden hose to fill it back up. The faucet adapters are between $1.50 to $4 depending on whether they are plastic, copper, etc.
The water has to be on for the suction to START. It does NOT have to be on once the vacuum is created. As long as the tank is higher than the sink it will continue to suction.
Does this only work from the sink faucet? What if I need to fill my tank with salt water mix that I made in a barrel or bucket? Will this product work for that?
Using a barrel or Brute container, you would then need to attach the python to a pump to allow you to fill from this container to the aquarium. You need to ensure that the water is treated and mixed before adding to your aquarium, obviously.
What if the water straight out of the cold is warmer (like 10 degrees Fahrenheit) than the water in my tank? PS. I live in Texas so during the summer our cold water out of the faucet is really warm.
Brilliant I've just had mine delivered I'm watching this and doing it for the first time by by buckets....... why o why did I not buy this bit of kit years ago.....#easywaterchanges
Thanks for this video. Sold on the Python. As a first time aquarium owner, I did have a question. I'm preparing for my first water change. How much water do I actually remove from the tank? It's a 10 Gallon Tank. Thanks for your help.
I am curious, I have city water and they add chlorine and the much deadly chloromines... should I try to fill my tanks then add the conditioner? Sounds like a fish risk with the poison they add to the water. I love my Python as it makes emptying the tanks wonderful, and makes it easier to fill the buckets right at the tank so I just have to lift and dump. I would love to just fill them from the sink though. Thanks!
What about needing to condition the water that you’re putting back into the tank? I’ve heard you need to mix it first then pour? I’m still learning I’ve had many fish die in the process it’s breaking my heart I’m trying to learn as much as possible to have them safely! 😭
It can certainly remove the water, but you can't refill a saltwater tank with straight tap water - needs to be premixed with synthetic marine salt well before hand.
I recently just purchased a 10 Gal tank yesterday, I have it up and I am beginning to cycle it for a week. I am so investing in this so I save time and energy. I have a few questions, one is how often should you do a water change? also do you think that a Kuhli Loach would be fine for my tank, I don't have real plants because my lights aren't bright enough to support them but I really love the Kulhi Loaches and really want to put one or two in my tank with my other fish! any advice would help
With a 10g tank I wouldn't bother purchasing a Python. You will need to do a 30-50% water change once a week. Removing 3-5 gallons or less is so easy it would be more work to set up the python and all that you would have the water change done before you even had the python ready. Don't get me wrong, love the python - I have 5 tanks (55/30/20/10/5) and I don't mind doing changes on the 10 it's so fast and easy. A regular gravel vac would suffice. This is meant more for a larger tank say 55g+. But don't let my opinion stop you from getting one! As for the Kuhli loach, they can get up to 4" so a 10 gallon some may say would be too small but you can give it a try - just do your research beforehand.. Good luck!
I have 2 aquariums, one on the main floor and my biggest one in my living room basement. My facet is upstairs, pretty sure water filling up the tank wont be an issue but what about pumping the water, will it work?
Now I have a 30 gallon tank for my turtle but its only filled to 15 gallon what would you suggest is a good way to clean the gravel and do water changes. Is this product what I should get?
I've had a few mishaps with dossing with water conditioner ( by which I mean forgetting... Once for like ten minutes!) but I haven't seen any problems.

Hmm. My taps don't seem to have any kind of screw attachment like that. Come to think of it, I've never seen one that does (apart from outdoor hosepipe taps). Do they make a rubber adapter that just slides over the end of the tap, like those old-fashioned showers?
It isn't always apparent, and usually is disguised to look seamless, but It's likely that the end of your tap, right where the water comes out, can be threaded on and off, much like the one in our video (ua-cam.com/video/V3dhg5ylCnQ/v-deo.htmlm). If you twist, you'll probably see that it starts to detach, revealing a threaded pattern where the Python can screw on!
Vailwolf, I just used the python 2 days ago on a sand tank. I wish python had an adaptor. I saw a video where someone used a pen cap taped to the end, to stir the sand and suck the floating particles. Someone suggested using a plastic fork, that's what I tried. I still got sand in the hose and down the drain. I'm hoping I'll get better with practice. It'd be so much better if they made an adaptor. There are videos on how to make your own sand cleaner, I wish I would have seen them before I bought this.
Hi, is there a shut off valve on the water "extractor" near where I am working so I can shut off the suction in between tanks without having to return to the sink?
Big al’s is a great store... but I hate the employees, a lot of them are pretty unenthusiastic about their job. They get annoyed when I ask for help. And they assume I know nothing about fish-keeping. I was there with my friend and he picked out some kind of Molly and without even knowing his setup they didn’t let him buy it because they thought he was inexperienced. I was once picking out plants, and the employee was very annoyed and didn’t have any desire to be helping me. After he’d take out a plant I like, he’d sigh and say unenthusiastically if there are anymore, when I say yes I almost get an eye roll. And my first time I was there a couple of months ago I was wandering aimlessly and it was obvious but not one employee had any desire to ask anyone in the whole store if they needed assistance... people have to go out of their way to look for help from employees. The store is great but the employees make my shop their a lot worse.
I love the emphasis on bucket spilling and shaking when filling up the tank. It really captures the moment. :)
Hahaha thanks! We knew everyone could relate...
You should see the pictures on the python package. It's pretty funny as well.

This was the best and simplest review. Other channels were pissing me off not being thorough in explaining how to do this. Nice job

Lol
How lol I got back pain now because of it
I have a reef so I use two small pumps one out, one in for changes. And when I vacuume, I hook it up to a filter and pump back into sump
this product is genius, i love it, no more buckets for me, i cant believe lived without this for so many many years
+Cathy K - it's a life (and time) saver!
That's for sure! I just got one. Was so tried of water buckets. And spilled water!😉
This beautiful invention put the love back into fish keeping

Adjust the water pressure at the tap.
@@BigAlsVOD Couldn't you just adjust the water pressure at the hook shut off valve itself?
You could probably adjust the pressure using that control valve on the end of the hose.
Great product. I have a 20 46 and just started a 75 discus tank. Save so much time. Watched video and directions were spot on. Highly recommend.

but wait theres more.
Keep lugging buckets! ENJOY!
The fact that you didn’t realize that before you started watching is kind of funny

Yes, the water is wasted down the drain. You can’t avoid it.

I love my Python, makes cleaning and water fill easy.
I need this in my life!!I have to do water changes for a 3.5 gallon and I struggle with that!😭😂
Wow week
Awesome video. It definitely clear all my questions about the python .
Good product. I am just not sure about adding the conditioner directly.
Wow, this would be helpful! I find myself carrying at least 10 5 gallon buckets back and forth, and then I spill one. Then I have to soak it up and bring out the box fan from my attic! So much work for one water change.
is it normal for small cloud/dust-like particles to come out from the gravel vac when filling up the tank?
You forgot rubber o ring on the sink lol great video👍🏻👍🏻
I get my step ladder and put it next to my tank, then I put my container of water on the top of the step ladder so that its at a higher level than my tank and simply sython the water in using gravity, simple no cost method .
I do the same
I think this python siphon is really only necessary for aquariums > 75 gallons
God bless Lance Reyniers my friend and the inventor of the Python No Spill Clean and Fill. I met him while I was working at Hoffer's Tropic Life in Milwaukee where we both lived and worked, it was cool watching him get this apparatus off the ground! I even got a tour of the "factory"! Lance was REALLY cool! He claimed that his product "really sucked", lol!
He may be gone, but his stubborn ass will NEVER be forgotten! We love you Lance, now you can ride the eternal highway in the sky! RIP ❤ 🐟
I just got a tank and that looks super helpful
We just bought this yesterday . Using it now
Would any substrate in the tank be fine? I’m getting an aquarium of my own and I don’t know what kind substrate would be best for the python. I would prefer to get fine gravel or sand but I don’t want the python to suck that stuff up
Another well produced and informative video..thank you.
That thing would make a great bong.
What tank is that? it is EXACTLY what i've been looking for!
The aquarium with the African cichlids is a 150 gallon aquarium (48" x 24" x 30")
Thanks for the reply! Is no specific branding or way I can find it online?
If not, that's fine! Thanks again for the response :)
I got a 40 gallon tank, so to clean it I don't need to drain all the water out? so dirty water will still be in my tank?
Dear God I need this in my life now.
Does the hook come standard with this?
Thanks, Thomas, I like your demonstration with the Python the best.
No need to have it constantly attached to a running tap🤦🏻♂️
calvin mcmenamin I empty with a normal siphon and use the water for my plants then just use this to refill!
Hello Calvin - do you 1) own fish or 2) also water your plants with your bathwater? What about your #2's, great fertilizer right?
Doesn't this consume a huge amount of faucet water while using?
I just got the squeeze siphon starter. How do I attach it to my phyton?
How big is the tank in the video? It is a nice tank.
I like the size of that aquarium. How many gallons is it? Thanks!
Does a new tank have little bubbles I just filled my 55 gallon tank and it have little bubbles is that nominal.
Can't wait to buy one
You forgot to get the inner rubber band thing for the copper adapter
What if the water straight out of the cold is warmer (like 10 degrees Fahrenheit) than the water in my tank? PS. I live in Texas so during the summer our cold water out of the faucet is really warm.
@Big Al's I have one of these systems and use it all the time but don't like how warm the cold water is when I put it in my tank.
Great promo man...I’m sold...
What if your faucet doesn't have a thread?
you can buy Universal Faucet Adapter.
Where could buy a universal faucet adapter?
@@dianeperez2967 home improvement store like Lowe's or home depot
what if the threading on faucet is on the inside? do you have brass adapter for this application?
If you close the faucet after the syphoning stars will the water keep flowing out? that way there is no waste of water.
How long is the reach of the line?
Brilliant I've just had mine delivered I'm watching this and doing it for the first time by by buckets....... why o why did I not buy this bit of kit years ago.....#easywaterchanges
It's good and all but what if your sink's faucet doesn't have the correct end?

Thanks for this video. Sold on the Python. As a first time aquarium owner, I did have a question. I'm preparing for my first water change. How much water do I actually remove from the tank? It's a 10 Gallon Tank. Thanks for your help.
esobel2009 depending on how many fish you have, 25% to 50%. a python might be too strong for a 10 gallon tho
@@anoukveen4197 Thanks Anouk, we have 2 Molly Fish.
@@esobel2009 hi, id recommend adding 2 more mollies then, they like to live in groups, and a 10 gallon tank has room for 4 to 5 molly fish ;)
@@anoukveen4197 Thanks for the advice!
Does Big Al's ship to Australia?
@Big Al's, so when I drain the water from the tank to the sink, do I have to keep the sink on while I'm sucking up the water to the sink?
Can this also work with saltwater tanks? Removing the water I see will be the same, but how about filling it back up?
Good luck!
Doesn’t the pressure build up in the tubing when you turn on the water but the end is closed
What size tank is that and brand? that's a beautiful tank.
Big Al"s commented below: The aquarium with the African cichlids is a 150 gallon aquarium (48" x 24" x 30")
Is it suggested by Big Al's to use the mix of cold water and hot water from sink to add to a discus tank ?
Thank you for the post! Great Job.
Many thanks to you, Big Tuna!
Is this product what I should get?
this was a great video
Gives me panic attack that tap water goes directly into the tank 🤦🏻♀️
I had the same concern! Just did it last night, added the conditioner to the tank before filling with tap water, and the fish are happy...:)
I add conditioner like he does, after starting to fill the tank. Chlorine/chloramine isn't immediately harmful. No problems yet!
@@pyr0static or is it

I'm thinking of getting one of these for my 30g Axolotl tank. Do these work well for sand substrate?
Vailwolf, I just used the python 2 days ago on a sand tank. I wish python had an adaptor. I saw a video where someone used a pen cap taped to the end, to stir the sand and suck the floating particles. Someone suggested using a plastic fork, that's what I tried. I still got sand in the hose and down the drain. I'm hoping I'll get better with practice. It'd be so much better if they made an adaptor. There are videos on how to make your own sand cleaner, I wish I would have seen them before I bought this.
no good in most British homes as we have 2 taps. one for hot water and one for cold water.
Hi, is there a shut off valve on the water "extractor" near where I am working so I can shut off the suction in between tanks without having to return to the sink?
What if my sink does not have any removable parts?
How suction of water is done?
Is it manually or you have to attach a pump
What city was this store in?
Aquarium Co-op is much better. Never have I had a bad time there.
Would you do great job working min wage
