Oak nosing for tile. Often times when finishing a tile floor you have to install some kind of transition from a different type of floor, or in a doorway, or in this case leading to the stairs. In this video I show you how to install a nosing at the top of a staircase to protect the edge of the tile from chips as people go up and down the stairs. There are several ways of doing this, in this case I use a narrow piece of oak fitted to the top stair to make that transition. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. Transitions are always a huge part of my projects. They can make or break a flooring job. Thank you so much Sal!

Sal doing carpentry, drywall, flooring, tiling. Goes to show how much you need to know to be a great tradesman. Folks don't realize how much work goes into the smallest of jobs let alone big ones.

Exactly, so many things to do to prep, build and finish the install.

Would love to see more videos on transitions. From tiled bathroom floor leading to wooden floors. Always find the metal transitions don't look so great. Thanks for the video

If it were permanent, and you used construction adhesive, you wouldn’t still drive eight finish nails in a 36” nosing, would you? Seems like a lot of eye sores after filling / staining.

Did you not think it was a bit high on left (your right) side, there was a definite difference in height which at the top of some stairs could prove hazardous. Banging nails in is also a very crude method of fixing, secret fix screws would surely be a better job

I love this channel and Sal is great to learn from. 1st time I've really disagreed with his approach.
Here is my approach . That transition should be glued down with PL 400 type material, any quality polyurethane subfloor material will work, no nails or screws, use weights to hold it in place, along with tape to hold it horizontally. I would never use any type of silicone on the gap, a polyurethane sealant or something like BigStretch can be tooled flat to both surfaces, and will hold the gap with good stretching capabilities. I've used that product between oak, cork, and floating floor material and tile, it looks great years later, I'm talking a small 1/8" gap or so, where I've prepped the floors so they are equal height.

Thanks for your comment! I just did a stair edge and I screwed down a beautiful oak board. It looks amazing. I hope the screws remain in place for years to come. Why do you say no screws or nails?

Don't disagree with the adhesive, but I did say that It was a temporary molding and that i would have use construction adhesive if it were permanent. Stairs need to be done at a later date, so a new molding will be added then. As far as the silicone goes, that is what is called for where a tile meets a dissimilar material , astm c920, according to ANSI EJ171

@@SalDiBlasi Thanks for your thoughts Sal, I could not tell how long this piece would be in place, my experience is the next job can be a long way off ( stair change). I'm thinking you are using the recommended solution for a water exposure situation where silicone is absolutely the right product. I would not use it here, my experience with other products that hold up to foot traffic has convinced me. Thank you for all your excellent work and video production, this is a fantastic channel.

Did you have to fabricate that nosing yourself? Or is there any for sale?

It looks really good. Don’t get me wrong - I like it, but I don’t understand the logic of paying the cost for tiles that look like wood? Please explain what the benefit is over an actual solid wood floor? I know these tiles are the current fashion.
I understand laminate flooring - it looks like wood but is much cheaper and easier to install. But tiles are probably the same price and skill level to install as a proper solid wood floor so why chose tiles over wood?

Durability, easy of maintenance, much more sanitary, greeter range of colors and textures. Will not scratch or ware, will never need to be refinished, will never yellow and is not damaged by water, just to name a few.

@@SalDiBlasi I get it now, thanks Sal. I was stuck in the mindset that laminate is a cheap alternative to wood that looks like wood. Love your work!
