  • When installing a gutter downspout drainage system be sure to avoid some of the common mistakes made. Remember, a gutter downspout system is a containment system. Designed to capture and convey water from your gutter downspouts and discharge that water to an appropriate area.
    In this how to install gutter downspout drainage system video I go over, and show 2 common mistakes made when gutter drainage systems are installed. I also show the correct methods and tools used to install the drainage system. Underground gutter drainage should incorporate the use of solid pipe. Never use perforated pipe, of any type, for you gutter downspout system. Also, when bringing the system to daylight make sure the water from the system is not discharged in an area that could cause other problems.

    I would recommend getting rid of the stones at 9:50 and fill with dirt. Also, cut slots in the black edging so water doesn't pool so close to the house.

    I'm confused as to what I should put in the trench with the pipe. Should I place rocks, fabric wrap, I mean it's not perforated so will weeds still get in there? I have 3 down spouts and I plan to put 3 basins. Two 9 inch basins on two of the downspouts and a 6 in basin along the path to the discharge/emitter.

    Good video. I have completely converted over to using SDR35 pipe (or pvc but it's pricier). I will not use corrugated at all anymore.
    And, yep, perforated pipe of any kind is a big no no for containment systems.

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  6 років тому +1

      Matthew McKinney thanks Matthew. Yes pricier and harder to install. The one section of pipe on the footer turns a 5 min connection using corrugated pipe into 30 min job using solid pvc pipe. Cut this, cut that, this elbow and that elbow 😂

    • @matthewmckinney2709
      @matthewmckinney2709 6 років тому

      Very true. Corrugated is much easier to use. I just am not sure about its longevity compared to hard pipe. But I suppose it just comes down to how much the client is willing to pay at the end of the day. haha

    In my experience many cities and states do not allow discharge into the storm sewer because it overwhelms their system in the event of a storm. Many projects we landscape are required to hold the rainwater of a 100 year storm on site.

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  6 років тому

      Carson Jensen not in our area. And if a 100 yr storm is the holding requirement...no one could afford the cost. These are residential homes.

      In our town they highly encourage it. If you are willing to pay the freight and have a bonded drain layer do the final tie-in, they love it because there’s less surface water annoying the crap out of everyone

    • @robertmagyar4735
      @robertmagyar4735 4 роки тому

      Here in Connecticut too, it is very difficult to get approval for emptying your private property water into City storm drains, if they even do allow anymore. I haven't even asked in ten years because of the response from City officials. And if caught doing so.... Huge fines. The storm drains are not built to handle all that excess!! And also, I've been told by many engineers and others in the field of laying pavers( we specialize in that also) , that pretty much every where , municipality's are all heading towards making it so each property will be responsible for containing any and all run off from ones property, on that property. This will be fact very soon. Especially because of contamination of water. Pollution.

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  4 роки тому

      Robert Magyar where do your city officials think the run off on someone’s property ends up? The surface runoff from a roof eventually makes its way to the street, if the property is correctly sloped at the 3% rate which is recommended. The original comment stated holding enough water for a 100 yr storm event?!? Do you know, or I questions if he has a clue, how big a system that would need to be!! I can tell you now it would be cost prohibitive to any residential client.
      I think the original commenter is confused and got his codes and requirements confused. Many cities are going to the first flush rule. Which requires you to hold the fist 100 to 300 gallons of a rain event on your property. This is because during the first 15-30min of a storm the largest amount of containment’s can be found in the initial run-off from that rain-event.

    You said that you tied several (3?) lines together in the back of the property. How many can you tie in to a 4" corrugated pipe connected to a pop-up end?

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  5 років тому +1

      JJ Deadhead that would depend on the total surface area to be drained. One of these downspouts was from a very small porch area. If I remember correctly there was less than 1200 total sq ft being drained from all the downspouts. There was only a small portion of this system that was corrugated pipe. The rest (120 ft) was solid pvc pipe. The flow rate of any pipe can be increased by increasing the pitch of the pipe. 4” solid pvc was more than sufficient for this system.

    I may have been doing it wrong all these years but I have found a mattock to work far more effectively when facing the opposite direction. The downswing drives the mattock into the soil and lifting it up pries the soil towards you, rather than trying to drive the mattock under the soil and having to lift it another 45° or farther to pry the lump of soil out. Bottom line, it looks like you are working a lot harder than you have to, wasting energy.

      I prefer to use pop ups when I do installs. My reason is that I seems to help limit debris that may fall into the drain pipe. How ever I try and run the drain system to a ditch or a storm drain system upon approval and proper permits depending on where you live

    I don't understand the use of silicone and screws to hold stuff together. Use pvc cement.

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  5 років тому +2

      Christopher Charron have you ever used silicone? Or are you basing your thought process on the assumption? I use both silicone and pvc. And they work. Both. I’ve used it for 8 years (silicone) and not one has separated or leaks, to this day. The homeowner, or DIY might actually find some advantages of using silicone as compared to glue. Which I will go over in a upcoming video.
      And regardless if you use silicone or glue you should always screw the adaptor to the guttering. If not...this happens.

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  4 роки тому +2

      Stephen Schindler you do not understand do you? Plz refer to the pictures I referred to in the above link. You MUST screw the adapter to the gutter. If you don’t...you will regret it. You cannot glue the adapter to the gutter. Nor can you silicone it. You screw it.

    • @Josh.1234
      @Josh.1234 2 роки тому

      Yeah not understanding silicone in the PVC joint.. obviously you would screw the gutter to PVC fitting but I have never seen anyone use silicone in a schedule 40 joint. I guess it doesn't need to follow plumbing codes or best practices but personally I would want to use the tried and tested method of connecting PVC plumbing.

  • @drummerrck
    @drummerrck 3 роки тому

    What size screw do you use for the connector joints?

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  3 роки тому

      Quarter inch in most cases. And sometimes a half inch. Always secure the downspout adaptor to the gutter using a screw. If you don’t, it will separate eventually.

    Is it OK to do 20' or so of french drain, and then let them flow into the same pipe that I want to tie my downspouts into? I've got 3 downspouts on about 650 sq feet of roof. It will all be run into a storm sewer in the front corner of my yard. I figured I would want to split the french drains and 1 downspout into one 4" pipe, and the other 2 downspouts into another 4". Or tie them all into a single 6"?

    • @Bellislawns
      @Bellislawns  6 років тому +1

      Andy Kilmer the water flow capacity of pipe relates to slope. The greater the slope the greater water capacity of the pipe. A 4” pipe at 4% slope has a greater gpm flow than the same pipe size set at 1% slope. So, you might be able to skip the 6” pipe if the slope is great enough.
      It’s okay to tie downspout drain lines into a French drain discharge line -only. Never tie directly into the French drain section of the system with downspout drain lines.
