      I'm wondering if the photos is why my shop sales fell off a cliff. But I've been selling our handmade items on ebay and amazon, but list everything on Etsy first, and only have a few listed on the other platforms. It's crazy how this hurt our family so much, because before Etsy grew (our sales doubled every year for 3 yrs in a row) we were barely scraping by, so when our Etsy grew, we were like Yay! We can afford shoes & gas & real meat & fresh veggies, etc...then bam! Our sales tanked. I thought we were even okay in 2020, but then after about half way through 2020, I realized our sales were slowing down....then it came to a screeching halt. How VAIN & IGNORANT for any platform to think I'm ONLY going to sell my items on JUST their platform. Or they're just plain out of touch with how folks are scrambling to get sales, you know....to survive! So the more platforms we sell on, then the more sales we get.

    I think other Sellers are experiencing the same decline in traffic and sales on Etsy currently. Economic conditions, the influx of mass produced items from Asia to the Etsy platform, and post-pandemic buyers returning to in-person shopping. The pandemic's inflated sales volume in the on-line marketplace was an anomaly and many Sellers that started shops during this time period are now facing the reality that this isn't sustainable and a fair representation of what to expect on the Etsy marketplace.

    The psychological stuff behind this is so crazy. Here's obviously a very nice Woman trying to do the best job she can, and 1 bad review messes it all up... and it keeps being done like that for months, then she gets a 3 star. You probably almost had a heart attack when you saw that second one come through. It's unnatural, part of the weird world we live in these days. Almost like cyber torture.

    Happy to see your video! Im so sorry this happened to you. How frustrating and unfair. You own your designs and should be able to sell and showcase them wherever and however you want.😢 I was thinking about starting a woocommerce shop since I have some experience with building WordPress websites. I was thinking about using a plugin to import my etsy listings to the new site. Is this what you did with shopify? Do you think etsy is also paying attention to SEO, duplicate titles and tags etc in addition to the images? I had every intention of using my same mock ups lol. Thank you for the heads up ❤

      That's a great question in regard to Etsy SEO and if Etsy is paying attention to the duplication at all. Could be! It would make sense. I did have everything down months before the infamous Etsy bot looking for duplicates from other scammy websites. But I'm sure between google and seeing what are otherwise duplicates, I perturbed the gods of the interwebs...

    This exact thing happened to me. I closed my shop as a result. It was the only 1 star review I had in 3 years of selling. And the customer was completely unreasonable and horrible, and they're the reason my store was destroyed. It was completely unfair and I'll never shop, or sell, on Etsy again.

    Gosh thank you for making this video! It was right on time. I had just filled my store with my items from etsy and i would've been left wondering the same thing! So we're ok with the same design just on a new mockup or can we just display a different color of the same mockups from etsy? Hope that makes sense.

    • @theteacherandbeyond
      @theteacherandbeyond  6 місяців тому

      I think an entirely different photo with the same design should be fine for google. It does seem that Etsy is employing a bot to determine if we have identical items to other sites that compete with Etsy, and is deactivating those listings in the hopes that the Etsy listing is selling something illegitimate (ie. buying it from a knock-off drop-shipper), and so it seems Etsy wants everything to be original too. Fair enough. HOWEVER, if your item gets copied somewhere else... it's not always possible to get it taken down...

    This was an interesting video. Thanks for sharing. Makes me think twice about following advice of all those UA-cam "experts" that advise creating your own website. Makes a ton of sense that Etsy wants to mitigate competition, but I also wonder when the lawsuits will start to be honest. Seems to be a conflict of interest with Etsy's prime customers - the sellers.

  • @henryreinders3031

    Excellent excellent points... especially in regards to running both an Etsy store and shopify store with identical products (or additional platforms). Sounds like a very worthwhile effort to take different product images for the same items found in each store - or don't sell the items found on Etsy in the shopify store.

    Etsy sucks big time. I’ve had a shop for close to ten years and gotten sales off and on throughout this time. I haven’t put much effort into it, but I’ve managed to get 100 orders with one terrible review from someone who was trying to get free product. This person literally had nothing other than one like for another shop then the one star review on my shop. Every time I go into my shop, all I see is one star. I have since gotten several orders after that review, but my heart isn’t in it anymore. I’ve informed Etsy of the situation, but they couldn’t care less. I’m washing my hands of Etsy. They have started offering a lot of $5 off sales which is a downward slope. I think Etsy is losing ground in the marketplace overall. Time will tell.

      That is terrible business practices and I never imagined another store would do something so under handed! 🤨 This is why I'm so hesitant to try Etsy! They should give back to their sellers by keeping an eye on this stuff & also allow an occasional bad review to drop off as new reviews come in. They know how bad that damages a shop! Just awful & I'm sorry it's happening!

    • @theteacherandbeyond
      @theteacherandbeyond  6 місяців тому

      My images weren't flagged, but my Etsy images were ranked highly in google. When I duplicated everything to my own website, that was the issue because google sees it as duplicate content and will not show both. The issue I experienced might not have any impact for you at all. HOWEVER, I am also leery after some of the postings in the Printify POD rockstar group that they indicated to exercise more caution with images. ie. if 50 other sellers and other (scammy) websites have the exact same item because the graphic is a purchased graphic, that COULD be an issue. Best of luck!!

I intended to leave Etsy when Shopify started showing profit. That never happened, and both shops are down. I have over 300 products, all of which are original. My reviews were excellent except for a one star review from a competitor who also sold stickers. She claimed to have not understood that 2X2 meant 2X2 and was disappointed with the size. It happens. I found it shocking that I went 2 years with no days at less than 10 orders a day only to have even a handful of days this year with 4 orders. If you look at a graph of top sellers on Etsy there's enormous variation. Some go from 800 sales one day to 500 the next. Could be the end of a discount, or that everyone is traveling for Thanksgiving or a million other reasons. It could be that Etsy cleared out the items that people had added to their cart and so customers don't see the social proof anymore. I think that happens more often that we'd like to think.

      I want to make sure I'm answering you to the best of my ability, but I don't think anyone has the answer to that. I think if we all use the exact same mockup, then the algorithm might be smart enough (at least eventually) to show the same mock-up over separate pages of Etsy. I think Etsy "tends" to show what has already sold. Not always of course! Just my experience, as with everything I'm sure there's others that would say otherwise.

      Another thing I've been seeing is that etsy wants only real photos of the shirts (or whatever) so that means you have to either buy and photograph your own or use the printer mockups. I can see that would be really difficult with the duplicate content problem on top of that. You may have a point that the name of the file might be enough to not flag it that way but then again with AI I bet the image itself also comes into play.

But if I was to pin the EXACT same photo from my own website to pinterest and that photo is the EXACT same on Etsy, I would think that it would be less likely for both of them to show up in pinterest as with google etc etc. The pinterest algorithm would (likely) need to decide which one to give priority to? Does that make sense?

    • @theteacherandbeyond
      @theteacherandbeyond  2 місяці тому

      hiya! Etsy isn't purposely sabotaging my shop, but customers can't find my shop from images in google and they previously were finding my shop from google. Fewer clicks + backlinks = fewer customers. Competitors aren't leaving false reviews; you have to be a legitimate customer to leave a review, but Etsy's algorithm often pushes out poor reviews despite many new reviews coming in for the same listing after the fact. Cheers!

      That's why I started! I still see most youtubers who talk about their numbers getting maybe 10-20 sales during the holidays. It's great that there's many who have started talking about it, but more information helps everyone.

      @@theteacherandbeyond Teacher, class is in session and we are ready to learn. Question: When the Etsy platform itself is struggling with declining sales/traffic, whether from Sellers exiting the marketplace to sell elsewhere, or from Etsy CEO mismanagement, I don't understand why you would attribute your experience of the same thing (lower sales) and the same effect (less income) to something personal that you did. Maybe all us Sellers should starting giving Buyers $5.00 refund for every sale over $30.00 after taxes and credits...meaning if a Tsunami hits and you can't swim and you drown but many other people drown also whether they can swim or not, Did YOU DROWN because you couldn't swim? OR did you just drown because of a Tsunami...just my thoughts.

    I think people who sell similar items, put out the bad reviews on their competition.

      I hope whoever would stoop that low would get some karma coming to them! Unfortunately, I've heard that some of these shops that pop on there are copycats & are willing to do crazy things to make as much money as quickly as possible, so if Etsy shuts them down they got what they came for. It's a nightmare scenario to say the least.

    You have an interesting problem. I'm so sorry you've had such a hard time with Google. Moreso, I'm sorry about your 1 star review, When you got that review, did you offer to rectify or hear the customer's complaint and did Etsy show that follow-up interaction? I only know from videos I've watched since I am a very new Etsy seller (possibly getting older with only 2 sales) My next question is about something you said near the beginning where you had 78IK in sales in 1 MONTH and how it was wreaking havoc on your finances. Well, I wondered about the "success" of a store while still living the "paycheck to paycheck" life. idk what I'd do. As it is my second sale ended up costing me money because I put it on sale and thought it was mandatory and, of course, was told if I raise prices before the sale to compensate would be illegal. So, the last day of the sale, someone made a huge purchase and I had to "eat" the proceeds from the purchase.

      Receiving funds from Etsy didn't wreak havoc on my finances, but it certainly was mind blowing! I was so busy with the shop and ensuring that each customer was receiving the correct item (so many orders that customers want to customize...) that I didn't have time to really process it at that time to be honest. I ALWAYS reach out with a 1-star review. Sometimes it's that the item didn't arrive so I send another one. They rarely change the review these days. I also used to receive many more messages from customers prior to leaving a poor review. Now they just leave poor reviews and aren't interested in a refund or getting the correct item (if there was a mistake). The psychological shift is fascinating! If I wasn't happy with an order I'd received I'd want another one or a refund. In regards to running a discount - always make sure you're making money. Even if it's a little bit because you are trying something new. Mistakes happen. Just remember you're running a business and some things are just the cost of doing business.

      From what Etsy pays her, she has expenses to produce the products and to advertise them. After deducting her expenses, she gets the profit number.

      Etsy is oversaturated. It's that simple. Millions of shops competing for few buyers. All the videos telling you what to do so you get "crazy sales" are just clickbait. Most people I know sell maybe one item on Etsy per month. The only exception are the shops Etsy pushes on the customers, there is usually one shop in every section that hogs all the traffic, and they spend thousands on ads.
