- The 1954 Mercedes 300SL has been described as the world's first supercar. I drive one (alongside ex F1 driver, Karl Wendlinger) on the 2023 Mille Miglia to find out.

Fascinating. Wonderful to see Karl Wendlinger looking fit and well. What he didn't mention was that at the very next race after the tragic San Marino Grand Prix in 1994, Monaco, he survived an horrific crash in his Sauber-Mercedes at the chicane where his head hit the barrier leaving unconscious and in a coma for several weeks; his F1 career never recovered, but he went on to be successful in sportscar racing and DTM.
I've met Wendlinger a few times on similar press events. He tries to avoid talking about the accident directly, he knows how lucky he is to have survived this without more severe permanent-injuries. What only a few know: He suffers from very severe constant headaches & tries to reduce them with strong medicine (and suffers from its side effects), has little sense of smell and no sense of taste anymore. Poor guy, but still so humble. In German, he has a very funny but very dry sense of humour.
Indeed great to see him! I did meet his Father AND Grandfather in the late 1990s via my Grandfather during a WW2 German Veteran Meeting, back then i wasn't that much into Cars yet but i will always remember Wendlingers Father taking me and my Father on a short Ride around the Bavarian/Austrian Alps in his BMW M1.
Overall a fantastic Family with Cars and Racing in their Blood. Glad this Video and your Comment made me remember this Childhood Memory!
Prost & Cheers from Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps
Well done Harry and thank you Karl and Mercedes Heritage for bringing us all along for the ride.
One of my favourite motoring memories is spending a day in the square in Brescia drinking beer, eating crisps and watching the cars trundle past on their way to having the seals applied. Simply wonderful
We did practically the same thing in 2014. What an experience, so many gorgeous cars. I remember seeing Jodie Kidd & Jay Leno competing in their cars. I managed to beg one of the race posters from a local shop, carefully brought it home and had it framed - it now has pride of place in our kitchen.
@@trevorgilson1502So did you have crisps as well?
@@trevorgilson1502 Given the location, I think I could have improved on the crisps ...
What a lovely understated gent that Carl is considering his accolades!
Exhaust tip came off @34:38 - coming down the ramp!
Great video Harry & team. ...just want to say "thanks" about inspiring a recent driving trip me and the wife took. We rented a 911 (992 Carerra) in Munich and drove over 5 days crossing Alsace, Switzerland, some of northern Italy, and back to Germany (hitting major mountain passes and some amazing roads) to celebrate a big birthday. Probably would not have done this without some inspiration from Harry's Garage and can we say we travelled with some of Harry's tips at top of mind. Cheers all and thanks again !
thats pretty cool mate. nice one
Very cool!
Fantastic! What a way to celebrate a birthday!
Good consumer advice on how to get into your 300SL Gullwing by folding the wheel …I will remember that just in case
Good to see Karl Wendlinger again - after he cheated death in F1 he is totally fine and had a great career still !
Opened the video as soon as the notification popped up…. Already 7 likes. That’s the power of consistent, quality content for you! Good job Harry.
If you want to watch a fake farmer who lives on government subsidies and can't make any money lives on hand outs he's a joke
I always remembered Karl Wendlinger of one of the young drivers in F1. Time has changed, obviously. And he is 4 years younger than me... OMG😕
Jochen Maas is a legend too - he is always a bit above the limit - destroyed some nice cars - but he "is still alive" thank you Harry for taking us along the ride!!!!! Awesome
Wonderful experience. It looks as though it was difficult to get Wendlinger to engage in conversation at first. I remember him driving in F1.
@@paulfellows2604 He is Austrian :)
@@MrCarrera28well, maybe he lives near the boarder
@@paulfellows2604 exactly Austrian , have a lot of Austrian friends they are all like this , great video
@@paulfellows2604 As an Austrian I would respectfully disagree.

What an honor to drive and ride alongside Mr. Karl Wendlinger and get overtaken by Jochen Mass. 😎 Big thanks Harry for doing the walk and showing so many cars to us. What a wonderful 1954 250GT Europa at 14:13, excellent color. Another great and special video you have made here, Harry. 👍👍
Karl's over-the-top, endless, bubbling, enthusiasm adds greatly to this video. I think he even smiled twice.
My first thought was ‘what a corpse!’ - looked real tough to get a conversation going. But later on he thawed a bit and as a navigator he really appeared to form a team with Harry.
of course 😂
Epic event and superbly filmed and edited. The lack of snobbery and VIP hospitality at every street corner is very refreshing, something i find quite intimidating at Goodwood. A much more down to earth event even with priceless vintage cars on display.
Im yelling at the TV "go get him Harry" as Jochen Mass flies by. Such a legendary event and Harry is a legend for having such class. Excellent
Thank you for recording that. When I was 9 years old, a fellow pupil was collected from school in a white 300SL. I was allowed to sit in it! I learned that the steering wheel had to be tilted to get in. The sound and everything about it could well have been instrumental in helping to seal my lifelong interest in things mechanical. What a wonderful experience you have had in Italy, and thanks for sharing it. Yes, the silver Alfa near the beginning was extremely beautiful too.
What an amazing experience, Harry. That something you heard was the exhaust tip falling off on the bottom of the ramp at 34:37 :P
Hope they managed to retrieve it, or otherwise it’s a nice Mille Miglia souvenir for someone.
Amazing! Just love these sorts of videos and I don't know if they're available from anywhere else but certainly not with Harry's style and substance. Big thanks for taking the time to record and share and thanks to Karl for having us along also.
What a moment when Jochen Mass went past! I was shouting at the TV for Harry to go get him!
The driver seems like a talkative chap
Brilliant, absolutely love these type of videos. Car reviews are great, but these take us on a journey, literally, to live a dream that most can’t. First class 👍
This type of video is why I follow Harry. Informative, entertaining and reverential towards the achievements of the drivers who raced in period. Fabulous. I look forward to the next instalment.
One of the road going versions of the Stirling Moss car, the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for £114m in 2022, making it the most expensive car even sold at auction!
I was pleased to see you focus on the Lancia Appia at 14.26; I've just done 120 miles in mine today marshalling on a VSCC rally. They are an oft-overlooked chapter in Lancia's history but were quite successful in the Mille Miglias and other rallies of the early 1950s.
Not every day 76 yr old Jochen Mass comes barrelling past you. The guy is a legend.
Wonderful video. Best moment was Jochen Mass overtaking like hell, and Harry immediately pushing the car :-)
Fantastic overview and wonderful history of Mille Miglia. Thank you Harry
Funny to observe how Karl Wendlinger seems to be the most chill person who ever had an F1 career and how he nurses the 300SL along. As soon as Harry took over the first thig he did was to give the old gal some proper welly. Lovely
What an emotive event, the history is right up there with Le Mans and Monaco. Fantastic to see Karl Wendlinger, I can’t believe that it’s that long ago he was in F1, seems like yesterday! Great video Harry, loved every second of it!
Thank you Harry and thanks to Mercedes for your invitation, fantasticly informative video 👍🏻🏴
Thanks for all the hard work Harry. Loved this one. The sound of 300SL always captures my imagination. Felt very much we were with you in the car. Great edit as well. Many thanks
Harry, thank you so much. Such a privilege to come along with you and Karl.
15:39 That's a 1954 Alfa Romeo 2000 Sportiva! Beautiful!
What an amazing experience. Thanks for sharing Harry.
Sorry -but it just seems to me the complete opposite: a shedload of cash to sit in an expensive traffic jam! 😎Just had a 3rd gear blast round my bit of the Cotswolds in a 60's scratcher, popped into the pub, and come home to a cold one and chicken. I have to say, why would you actually want to do this, apart from to say you had?
Yikes, no seat belts!
Blimey, what an invite to get! Some guys get all the luck :-) A wonderful video, as always. Sundays are Harry days.
What a great day. Wonderful to see John Fitch popping up again.
Ever our intrepid traveler, Harry once again shows us the details of locales we may never be able to see ourselves. Brilliant, as always, Harry. Well done. I had always heard that particular Mercedes was a toaster. Turns out uncle Sterling was spot on.
A delight seeing the 1950/60’s cars in such wonderful condition and surroundings. For the most part beautiful designs unlike todays boxes. I hope you can feature more in subsequent videos.
It was a treat to see some examples of the cars I once had, some Alfa Sprints and Spiders, the Dauphine. I imagine the scent of Castrol R was heavy in the air.
The owner of the local foreign car dealer from my younger days in the '60s had a 300 SL coupe, he shipped it back to Germany for restoration. I remember sitting in it and shutting the door, it popped my ears, that roof vent was closable in the road cars. Back in the day drivers of SLs and XK-Es would have the doors and rear hatches open as they cruised the Riviera.
A Salmson? Shame Ivan wasn’t there to explain.
That's as close as I'll get to riding in a 300sl. Thanks for the ride Harry and Karl!
How wonderful. As a man born to a German efficient father this reminded me of so many mistakes IU made non our journeys 18:57. I miss you daddy so much, our trips in the Mercedes across Bavaria will stay with me for ever. Your son. 19:35 my father shouting at me because I don't understand Deutschland.
I was a fan of Schumacher, Wendlinger and Frentzen from the Sauber days. Good to see Karl. Always seemed rather unlucky and should have had a longer F1 career. Seems a nice, quiet chap.
Thanks Harry and Karl for sharing this experience with us mere mortals. 🙏🏼
I really liked watching Karl Wendlinger in F1 back in the days, now driving with him in this legend of a car was amazing, thank you very much!
40mins of Harry's Garage on a Sunday, fuck yeah
Fascinating and thoroughly enjoyable Harry, thanks a bunch for sharing this with us!
Thanks Harry, true behind the scenes. Automotive royalty at this stage
An amazing experience, Harry! I loved that drone shot near the end
Brilliant film as always and thank you for taking the time to run over some of the other entrants. Next the Targa F if only possible!
Ive never done the race myself.... now I feel I have. A great interactive video as always. Wow what a great colour on that car. Beautiful. Thanks
Appreciate all the delightful details Harry, without you "we" wouldn't get to see a lot of this. Cheers!
That was epic. My two 'bucket list' cars are the E-type and the SL300. The E-type seems to get more hype, so this was a fantastic journey to see. Thanks Harry.
True, the e-type is similar but 10th? of the gullwing price
Mine are the Rekordwagen and Alfa Carabo.
Fantastic video Harry. Wonderful machine to partake in as well. Karl Wendlinger was the very real deal before his massive Monaco accident in 1994. Great to see his participation and enthusiasm coming through.
Very professional production. Well done Harry.
Harry living his best Life! Great stuff :)
Fantastic content as always. Thanks Harry!
Love to see you get involved with top European Pilots, well done Harry, 💯 and thanks to Mercedes to count us all in, and take us along with you to this marvellous event of the Italian Mille Miglia.❤ Should of geared down and put de pedal to the floor when ''Jochen Mass'' over took you, good excuse to hear the grunt of that 3.0l 6 and see the expression on Karl Wendlinger face, it wold of been funny. 🤧😨
Amazing video. I loved every minute. I kind of wish that there was a part 2 with the 300SL!
What a treat!
Thanks Harry.
Namaste!!!!
Have a chat with Ivan Dutton Harry if you want to know about Salmson…..not sure about the spelling…
Amazing video. You're a lucky man Harry, thanks for taking us with you.
Good stuff Harry, what a fantastic experience to even just be there to see all those old classics, let alone get to drive the Merc.
'Didn't know the story behind my Hot Wheels Elite "417"-It's coming out of the bottom desk drawer and finding a new home on the shelf.
A little motorsport history, a little more about the 300SL I didn't know before...and what looks like a hell of a driving experience. A great event you've brought us, Harry, and deep thanks for this. (And, yes...the Miura gets the "first supercar" nod from me as well, but the 300SL is still one *superb* car.)
I couldn't wait to see what you had in store for us but I knew I wanted to get into it asap. As usual the car, the driver with the all time great racing memories that has been produced must be one of the best events for races that I have learned about. The car is stunning so as you say Harry, crack on.
When Karl started talking about the accidents at imola I could not help but feel sad thinking about that weekend but also for Karl as only a few weeks later he was himself nearly killed at Monaco and was never the same again
As always, watching the Mille Miglia, complete sensory over load! So many fantastic cars! I have to go to see it some day. Great video, looking forward to the next one.
What an experience... and what a joy to watch this video.
Great one Harry, and thanks to Mercedees and Karl. More like this please 😊
Karl Wendlinger drove for Mercedes in sportscars alongsiden Heinz-Harald Frentzen and... Michael Schumacher. He came 4th at the San Marino Grand Prix in ´94, the race Senna was killed. In the race after, in Monaco he crashed into the barrier at Nouvelle Chicane and was in a coma for several weeks. ´94 was awful... He never recovered enough to really get back into F1, but had a fine career in sportscars and GT-cars. Seems like a very nice guy.
Great video Harry. Thank you for sharing so much yet again,... grazie mille!! Is that mini windshield there to keep bugs off the main windshield? (at 13:26).
Time for a beer indeed 🍺 Cheers mate🍻. Love you brother 😎
As usual, the perfect blend of information and entertainment. Thanks Harry.
Thank you for sharing your experiences with legendary driver, car and rally 🤗🤗🤗. Nice of you to let Jochan Mass pass you 😁
These videos are Harry's best. The road trip/race ones
Just the most wonderful film of two guys enjoying a fabulous car in a magical event. Karl seems like a perfect gent and you can sense Harry's polite deference to him which is a nice thing to see. I'm driving to Italy this week so hopefully I've picked up a few driving tips! Ha ha! The usual super high quality video journalism from Harry.
Thank you for giving us an opportunity to ride along and the stories. I felt a little bit of the experience. Thank you!
Fantastic video, Harry! Great insights of the MM; it’s a petrolheads heaven
The first vid of this channel I watched was Harry's Merc V12 convertible he'd bought for 5K or something to pop down to his "boat". Must be over 6 years ago now. And I've watched every episode since. And this was just another epic piece of entertainment. And Harry's Farm. It's just all good. Hi from NZ to all of you. Ride safe. Drive safe.
Well done Harry and thank you Karl
Fantastic video of a classic race (Mille Miglia), a very interesting review of this event. Thanks Harry. Bob
Thanks Harry, what an experience your bringing us along for, looking forward to the next video, Rj in Oz
I once drove 1000 miles on my own (actually, it was about 980 miles), and it nearly fucking killed me. I had to drive back across most of Europe from Slovakia back to England. While I saw a lot of Europe, it took forever. From memory, I started at 11am in the West of Slovakia, drove to Calais, took the Chunnel, and got back to Surrey, and arrived at 10am the next day.
That was in a diesel Peugeot on autobahns with virtually no stops other than 2-hourly cigarette breaks.
It's amazing that these guys could do 1000 miles on dirt roads nearly 100 years ago, without paved autobahns, and poor headlights in the same time.
Thanks Harry that was so informative. Love your garage and farm videos. I often think that there can’t be many people with your knowledge of cars. Still subscribe to EVO. Keep them coming!
I swoon at that 300 SL. Lovely to see some of the route.
Another amazing video, thank you so much harry for sharing all these wonderful car stories and adventures!!
Fantastic!!! A great watch. Looking forward to the next installment 😊
What an exciting episode, Harry! In my opinion, the 300SL has one of the most impressive and best sounding straight 6 engines ever, that deep bellow is just unmatchable, and not forgetting, of course, the great achievement of being the first ever fuel injected production car.
it wasn't the first fuel injected produktion car. Dr. Fritz Nallinger moved after the war to a small german firm and they produced a small fuel - injected car in small numbers. But after this Dr. Nallinger moved back to Daimler Benz and he became very famous there- being their boss at the end.
What an experience. Thanks for sharing Harry.
Superb! This just asks for a second video of the remaining days Harry, especially on the 300SL once more.
Crikey Harry you live a charmed life! Rolling over the ramp behind the wheel at the end of the day with the doors up must be a special moment for you.
one of the best, thnks Harry and Karl we were there with you.
An incredible experience to behold. Thanks for sharing Harry.
Pip pip!! Tally Ho!! Supercar, ticks all the boxes The 300 SL featured direct fuel injection, aluminum body panels, a tubular spaceframe chassis, four-wheel independent suspension, and a 161 mph top speed. Even today, those are rare characteristics to find blended into one car. In 1954, they were nothing short of revolutionary.
What a great event and drive Harry. Amazing SL Benz with a good sound. Whining sound rear differencial...love it!
Love the video, and as always, thank you Harry. Nice comment at the end, time for a beer. Always time for one last beer...
Love the 300SL iconic style with Gull Wings and awesome sound. Impressive the time Sterling Moss posted.
Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻🍷🍷🍷🍷
Such a stunning car. I love the paint! Great color, and the interior, WOW! Words fail me.
Thanks awfully for sharing! Cheers and all the best.
Always loved the looks and especially the gorgeous sound of 300SL, just for fun googled how much are they going for yesterday and WTF!😂
