1000mile Euro-trip in the Lotus Esprit turbo to find my old Spectre Defender..
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 січ 2020
- The SVX Concept Spectre Defender I used to own was sold last year to 007 Elements, owners of a new facility at the top of a mountain in Sölden in Austria dedicated to all things Bond. 007elements.soelden.com/home.... It's also where the snowy scenes in 'Spectre' were filmed, hence why the Spectre Defender is on display there.
Given this was a Bond mission, it only seemed right to take my Lotus Esprit Turbo on this trip..

Most underrated nostalgic thing he does on every road trip is looking at an actual map! Awesome!
Brian Jang Even with a onboard gps, I always have to carry one
My Buds & I ride BMW motorbikes & we always have maps with us.
Was a German map to boot.
google maps its just better bro
@@josebinladen2223 Yeah, if you don't care where you end up and which route you took to get there.
Favorite thing about Harry? He’s not a snob who buys a car as an investment, he ACTUALLY drives them.
Fantastic video - as always - MANY thanks Harry! Keep up the great work.
hes a likeable toff
Since when are cars an investment ?
Linkoas people often buy old rare Ferrari’s, Lamborghinis etc etc just to leave them sitting in a garage and never drive them in the hopes to sell them again at auction down the road for a tidy profit. They’re even doing this with brand new cars usually from a limited production run in the hopes that their value will skyrocket as they become future classics, you see this a lot with Porsche GT cars as of late so this is what I mean by buying cars purely as an investment and not for the car itself.
And my favourite farmer as well. 👌
I love that Harry still uses real maps! Plus he goes to the trouble of getting a modern but period correct looking radio.
Agreed re: maps! They are an important [non-digital] tool that we need to keep in circulation and use.
That was Epic!! Much respect Harry!!
@@YasumotoUS Forget it - Generation gooogle will misinterpret those as wallpapers or giftwrappers anyway ....
@@manfredschmalbach9023 their loss.
@@YasumotoUS Oh absolutely. As one of the users of sextants I can't agree more
It's like going on a trip with an old friend and just chatting about cars as you go along. Just so enjoyable and relaxing. Harry imparts his terrific knowledge and experience without any trace of arrogance. Showing us the route he's going to take on a map book! Brilliant! He's just a perfect companion. I always feel cheered and optimistic after I've watched one of his videos. Don't stop Harry!
absolutely spot on. You've hit the nail on the head. I was trying to work out why I liked his videos so much; its that he talks to you like an old friend. I feel the same with his videos, they always leave me feeling upbeat. He's easily the best on here
Definitely! I subbed after watching a second video. One big plus, is there's no background music whilst he's talking with us.
A huge thanks for not ruining it with crappy background music while you're talking. I don't know why some people are compelled to add annoying background music throughout their videos. I never last for more than a minute of crappy music.
A Euro trip to the snow in the Lotus, just like the Rolls. Started to watch as soon as I got the notification, everything was dropped.
Me too..the wife was fuming as she had just put her best negligee on and thought her luck was in.....
@@BibTheBoulderTheOriginalOne she might need some side hustle. LOL
LOVE my Elise!!❤️💚
He has the best wife ever going on these trips and letting him keep bunch of cars and being his camerawomen
She’s a keeper !
she is love keeper
I'm sure she does alright too.
Well he's not 20
What is so hard about that! I'd be keen but now its verbotten.... The Great RESET....that most dont believe is really happening..When will the boys grow up and get angry?
"LETTING him keep"? Harry is not a simp, bro. >8]
Watching this reminded me of being 10 years old and watching For Your Eyes Only for the first time. The sound of the Esprit's engine as it belts along mountain roads, the snow covered mountains, even the scene where Harry drove through that rather pretty little town. It was so much like the film. To these sentimental old eyes anyway. Definitely my favourite Harry's Garage video so far, which is fitting because the Esprit has always been my favourite Bond car of all time, and For Your Eyes Only one of my favourite Bond films. What a wonderful 30 minutes.
Mrs M on camera duties is an absolute unsung hero for these vids. 👍
Mrs M is a feminist icon!
Yeah, good point. Mrs M deserves a brief appearance Harry...love this vid, and she has become quite a good camera woman indeed! Are you going to treat us to more Esprit vids in the future, please Harry? 👍🏻🙏
Love Harry, he’s in a different world to a lot of the other UA-camrs, there’s no B.S or biggin himself up.
Just pure enthusiasm for the cars, and it makes for great content, I never get bored of his videos.
The “others” could learn a lot from him.
I agree. It's refreshing as most of the others are obsessed with self image like instagrammer selfie rubbish with silly intro graphics and music. That turns me off. I prefer it like this
I let his videos pile up so I can get a huge dose of Harry at a time. Palate cleanser.
He's a class act, a true british gent!
its because he is not financially dependant on youtube...obsession with generating more and more income from videos slowly ruins everything
I’d happily watch this on BBC 2 on a Sunday evening...
Beats TG, that's for sure.
He'd have to fill the car with beans and race a BMX to his destination, to get the 8pm slot on BBC 2
With a nice glass of red. Perfect.
@James Smith wow
Doesn't matter which generation, most normals don't like tasteful automotive shows, so video on demand services like UA-cam is perfect for a video like this.
"It does slow up at about 140[mph]... but I was on winter tyres so I don't really want to go too fast in it".
Beautiful.
Watched every last single second of this video, as usual. There's something wholesome about a fine, humble English gentleman who has an insane collection of the cars I've loved for 30+ years. Good on you, sir.
Harry actually lives my fantasy life.
Usual UA-camr: buys cars to pose on Instagram or get more subscribers.
Harry: buys a car to enjoy driving it.
Yes, thats why I love his videos. He’s a true ‘car’ person, unlike 99.9% of these UA-camrs. No shouting, no pointing, no clickbait bollocks like ‘I’m selling my car, and here’s why’ etc.
If you're inclusing Shmee in taht you're an assclown. The guy does more than 30k miles a year in his cars.
stubones he’s not a car guy, those who know just know. I don’t care how many miles or exotic cars he has, or how many stats he can pull out of his head.
@@stubones it's still not much per car is it?
@@jblack5323 for a rich guy he doesn't come across as a dick.
'"I'm not one to own ornaments"... thats why we love you Harry!
How the hell does he have time to be a farmer, a family man, a youtube reviewer and also go on these grand adventures. Kudos Harry.
Probably has people working on the farm for him.
I've learned that one should not simply turn off the video after Harry's final words... there's always a little bonus treat clip right at the end.
Thanks for that! In this case, the Esprit on the hairpin. Nice!
One does not simply turn one of Harry's videos off, after the final words.. Boromir.
I learned this after the Carrera GT video - the noise!! :-)
These real world driving trips are what separates this channel from the pack.
Many thanks!
do you ever get that feeling like "oh shit i wish i found this channel before"? but than you realise that you're in for hours of top notch content and its all good?
this is some truly fascinating stuff sir. thank you and keep it up!
М. Моррисон
I like this video.
12:25 I really love you add a perspective on the emissions of a fun car compared to daily transport. This is exactly why fun cars shoudn't be banned at all! Not even from major city centres.
For the rest, never knew there was a mountain complete in theme of James Bond, how cool!
Awesome drive in an 80's car like that, Love it!
A more interesting comparison would be to a brand new EV. The Lotus get's poor economy...but is already built. The EV has a huge impact when being manufactured. The greenest cars are classics that are already built!
Harry checking in to the Austrian hotel:
"The name's Metcalfe......Harry Metcalfe"
Try again, Mr Craig.. You don't look anything like Mr Metcalfe. We have UA-cam in Austria too.
The desk clerk was shaken, not stirred.
I hope they saw the car first:)
"The name's Bond....Harry Bond" :-D
He should of rocked up to the female receptionist and exclaimed the names Monk Harry Monk lol
19:35 "look round here, this is quite pretty" he says as they drive past a huge picture of a mostly naked woman in stockings and suspenders!! 19:40
oops.
@@harrysgarage must have been subliminal??
Harry's garage I bet Wifey was suitably impressed at that remark!
So funny - saw that and thought the same, we had shooting rabbits, farming, a mini rant about carbon, and a 1980's sports car, win. Harry dont change!
@@harrysgarage At least you are clearly firing on all cylinders.
When can I retire to my farmhouse with my mega car collection and go on loads of road trips..........? You are the man Harry.
Such a stunning vehicle, with such a lovely sound to it. This was quite simply a joy to watch, thank you for sharing it with us all.
This car still looks incredibly cool. I really like the simple and clean lines of this design.
Great garage but no garage queens, instead cars that are driven and driven hard, what is more we (as car enthusiasts) are able to watch them driven, a very big thank you to mr Metcalfe.
Always feel like I'm there with Harry, amazing adventures and fun times with interesting and classy motors, Harry's garage is definitely my favourite!
I'm always waiting for the trip videos. Amazing!
I would be as proud as Harry to see this Defender in such unique location. It was the smartest move.
Me: Sees notification that Harry's off on a 1k mile trip in his Giugiaro Esprit Turbo
Me: Claps happily at the screen like an imbecile, settles in for the next half hour
2:36
Wow, that shot made the car look like a toy.
Was that Harry's first Drone footage?
@@paulsims
Probably a kind of stick with a support to film.
Most Lotueses are tiny when you see them in real life, the old ones (with less safety gear) more so. It's hard to get a sense of scale on a screen. The Elise is about waist height and around as wide as a Fiesta.
What a treat, 30 minutes of joy. Thanks for letting us watch this.
What a perfect trip. Thanks for sharing it with us as always, and thanks for making your viewers feel included.
THAT DEFENDER DESERVES TO BE INSIDE great vid harry as always thanks
You know it's going to be a good episode when the map comes out.
the lotus looks so good on the mountain
You, Trish, an older car and into the mountains in winter. You’re an inspiration every time. Thank you.
First video I saw from Harry was the Rolls-Royce trip to the arctic, since then I've watched like every video of yours, and the wife likes the road trip videos too. Thanks Harry, you're a great man.
I love these road trip videos and it's great to see someone actually driving their collections!
I enjoy most of your videos but the long trips and adventures in interesting cars are definitely my favourite. I was looking forward to watching this and it didn’t disappoint. Thank you for more top quality content, Harry.
I've always loved the Esprit. Good to see one taken out and thoroughly driven to it's potential.
A well sorted Esprit is a real gem to drive. Love it! Great video, thank you Harry and Lotus ;-)
Harry is a legend! What an amazing trip. Thanks for sharing.
Love this channel so much. This guy loves his cars for the cars themselves, not just for the status. Fantastically made vids too - love the shots from the cockpit best - feel like we're in there on the road trip! Keep 'em coming Harry!
Harry, I love your road trips in special cars. You manage to capture the excitement I always feel before and during a trip but in a very humble way.
Oh, Harry...TOO GOOD! What an amazing treat this vid is, though I was a bit nervous for you at first as I feared unreliability...but this particular Esprit seems really well put together and is such a beauty. Brilliant adventure, and super stunningly impressive car. Many Thanks for this. 👍🏻
Since i was a kid that Lotus is my dream car. Great to see one actually being used properly. Keep it up Harry!
I love to see this car videos and like to hear this calm comments, no hassle, thanks...and he uses maps...marvelous 👍
Love, love, love the road trip, the Bond elements and real world use of a classic and fondly remembered automotive icon from my youth. Really cool to hear about the real world capabilities of the Esprit. Thank you!
I absolutely love watching you on these trips Harry - I’m very jealous of your lifestyle but love your attitude!
Thanks Harry, i enjoy your trips as if they were mine , such an involving experience, it’s quite fun “traveling” with you , cheers !
Love the road-trips!
Also quite remarkable, even for a salubrious Austrian ski resort, just how much impact a visit from Mr Bond has on a place.
Never tire of watching your reviews Harry, just brilliant. Your presentation style is awesome 👍👍
Thanks for taking us along Harry great road trip and the Esprit still looks mega and great to hear a fantasy car of mine from the 80`s is not a let down :)
Been following Harry for couple of years now, always made good content, and still does!
Thanks for that information.
Harry, your trip videos are the best on UA-cam and this may be the best of yours. I was SO excited to see 1) The Defender backstory 2) The Lotus Turbo 3) The Bond connection and how 1 and 2 are intertwined. Well done, full marks on this one!
PERFECT!
Hands down the best car channel on UA-cam, this is even better content than most TV shows! Looking forward to your future videos, Harry!
Thanks for another great video Harry. Down to earth, driving, giving it some beans and yet respecting it. Pack up all sorts of stuff for a nice vacation and enjoy the car. That's the way to do it. Plenty of other people doing racing on a racetrack and that's all fine. But I'd rather enjoy your sort of videos. Much more mature and enjoyable.
Happy you found your Esprit to be a surprisingly good car. Keep up your good work. And if possible, let's see some more of the Esprit later on and possibly another motorcycle offroad travel video?
Kind regards
Harry's the real deal
Love that early Lotus Esprit I was a teenager when they came out I was instantly infatuated
Great video thanks Harry
Another wonderful Harry & wife adventure. I've had the good fortune to drive through Austria and thanks to Harry, his trip brought back many pleasant memories. Thanks, again, Harry, and best to the Ms.
I like that Harry goes to the extent of addressing the emissions concerns for those concerned about the impact this Lotus has. These road trip videos are my favorite, because we get to see gorgeous machinery eating up the miles while Harry is having a blast behind the wheel.
I love the Esprit, easily my favourite car. I have found memories of a lovely gold Esprit Turbo in the 80s.
Sölden is on my list of ski destinations. I’ve stayed just up the road at the next resort. Great area. Loving the trip Harry good job.
Love this channel. Love how Harry just tells a story without trying to be funny or trying too hard to entertain. Love it.
Car and man.....pure class!!! Another excellent video from Harry full of enjoyment, facts and interesting detail. Thank you very much for a wonderful 30 minutes. Cheers, Bob
I always enjoy your road trips ... as always this one was as good as usual .. Thank you ..
Thanks for another great video, Harry. And you are such a gentleman too.
Love these adventures so much. Thank you for such interesting videos, Harry!
I love these videos how Harry actually really uses these beautiful cars the way they are meant to be.Keep up the great work Harry you are the best.
It's always a good day when you get a notification from Harry, even better when it's a road trip in something special.
Mr Metcalfe ,again a very nice video to enjoy. Thank you for the Winter Alps Tour in a Lotus Esprit .I have said allready enough.............I wish you a very long pleaseant live !
What a warm, fuzzy moment. Feels like I’ve actually been on that epic road trip, sat in the passenger seat and poking the camera up Harry’s nose just to hear the pops of the exhaust! Really inspiring me to do another Euro road trip!! *heads to the classifieds *
I love to see your travels. They are always for beautiful places. And with great class he moves to these places. Greetings from Portugal
Harry, you're fantastic! Thanks for uploading this and keep doing these trips!
Harry youre the only youtuber i can see that drives his cars and loves using them as intended. great videos and youve earned yourself a sub, ive been on the fringes of subscribing for a few weeks and you kept popping up in recommended. nice guy.
Absolutely, absolutely, absolutely loved this video journey...and I love Harry as well...what a lovely humble man.
Another brilliant video thanks Harry. We had similar problems with cabin storage when we did a similar trip. We used cup holders with suction cups that stick on the windows and storage device bags that hang from the back of your headrests. Naff but really useful.
Just remember to put your Costa in after you slam the door though. I learned the hard way!!!
It’s UA-cam channels like this that has me watching very little tv these days !
Great video as always by Harry !
Im the same. If this was on tv, id probably watch it but i find myself not turning it on at all these days.
Brilliant trip - loved that - thanks for posting....and entirely get what you mean about being at a ski resort without your skis...super annoying especially on a "bluebird" day!!
Was a cracking day...!!
Went to Le Mans on a road trip in an Esprit turbo in my 20’s which was fantastic to look back on. Now I see this and it takes me back. Best reviews ever. Nothing to prove, no bravado, just good honest reviews and a proper road trip - It doesn’t get any better!!
Thanks for another very enjoyable video. I remember entering a competition in Autocar around 1988 to win one of those but never did so good to actually see one out there being used and appreciated. Great stuff.
Can’t beat a Harry vid, this was the best for a while 👍
Harry - good to see you again; I was really saddened when you went away from EVO, I enjoyed sharing that little journey with you, but I cannae help but cringe at a landrover being permanantly parked ouside on a mountain top. That said I liked your openness about travelling with the Esprit, reminded me of my days runnign a mkII MR2.
Another lovely video. I love this real world road trip videos that Harry makes. So down to earth and beautifully presented.
Thank you for a wonderful half an hour Harry. I could watch you all day! Great car and great location. Wonderful
Always loved the esprit since I first seen it in “the spy who loved me” 1977. Could never afford one 😖. Thank you for posting this video. I have ridden my motorcycle down the same route into Italy, so I know the road. Watching the in car footage is as close as I will ever get to experiencing driving the lotus.🙌🙌. Thanks again.👍.Cheers.
i remember i saw a few as a kid, broke down next to tr7's lol
Fantastic man. Lovely GT car. I love the concept of a supercar daily driver...and that deliciously natural exhaust overrun pop crackles and boom....
One of the best car vids on youtube. I smiled for the whole 30 minutes and 8 seconds.
Love your road trip videos, love seeing vehicle being used for what they were designed to do
Love the road trip videos. Beautifully filmed. Leaving the car outside the hotel. By the front door. As you would with such a car. Well done. Thanks

where I am actually able to travel to spectacular places in spectacular cars, like you.
What a legend. So nice to see these trips. Thanks Harry, you're a proper role model.
Vicariously living my car and Euro-travel dreams through wonderful videos like this. Someday...
Go do it mate, make it happen... life’s too short to put off your dreams.
Great trip, inspiring me to take my almost identical car to Cortina in Italy, another Bond location, with a friend who has a copper bronze one with Bond style ski racks.
The wind noise BTW is from the door frames, it can be reduced by adding the outer rubber seals which they fitted to later Stevens cars, these also fit the G cars. Very easy to fit.
Fuel tanks are joined by a large pipe, so effectively are as one.
Great video Harry thank you. love to see the older cars being used. Brilliant.
Excellent little video Harry, always had a soft spot for Lotus of this era after the brilliant factory sent me a great press pack for a school project I was doing, this was when the S1 Esprit had just been released and I’ve since had a few 70’s/80’s/90’s cars when current. I live in between London and Lyon now so you can imagine where I’m happiest to drive, this really has got my juices flowing for another Lotus to float around France in, really enjoyed this.
Hats off to Mrs. Metcalfe for the filming. Thank you!
I love the fact that you use these cars and take them on road trips. I’d love to see a long road trip with the Xj c!
Harry, as ever a fantastic trip, thank you so much for making these videos. What a delight to watch.
Nothing but class and quality from Harry as usual.
