Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing - Recommissioning an Automotive Icon | Tyrrell's Classic Workshop
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 бер 2021
- In this episode, Iain introduces us to the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing, a car that has every right to be considered an automotive icon and considered by many to be one of if not the first examples of a 'Supercar'. Iain delves into the history of how this car came to be, a true race car for the road. This particular fine example is in for recommissioning after a few years off the road, so after undergoing the necessary work, it's time to gently bring the car back to life on the road before seeing if that legendary performance is still there.
Note: @04:20, Iain's third point was meant to be that it allowed the engine to be mounted lower, rather than repeating the first point. Such are the perils of filming in one take and from memory!
Thank you once again to everyone for the overwhelming reception of these videos and for all the support of likes, subscribes and wonderful comments.

There's not many things cooler than pulling out of your shop in a Gullwing, with one door open.
To be met by a jet fighter parked infront of you🙈
Yes there is. 2 doors open.
Well, Dry Sump seems to be twice as cool (when he told us the three advantages @3:58 😁)
I was actually shouting no no no thought the door was going to hit panic over though great insight into this iconic car thanks Ian made my evening
CLUNK..... oh shi....
The knowledge Iain Tyrrell shows in these videos is just mind-blowing, making TopGear seem like a kid's show.
And most of the automotive UA-cam crowd. Harry Metcalf is my favorite car enthusiast collector / reviewer and Ian is my favorite technical expert.
Pretty much pointless comparison. Iain is sharing his knowledge and love for classic cars. Top Gear is an entertainment programme.
It is a kids show, is it not?
Thank you Harry's Garage for introducing me to this channel. Not only do I enjoy Iain's description of the cars he's reviewing, but I also get a fascinating history lesson. I only wish I had a car that warranted Iain's attention.
For all the high tech that went into this car ,the one thing Iain was most impressed with was the wind up clock. I have not seen him smile so much before .
He smiles pretty big when that big Merc 6 is wound up tight.
The day that keeps on giving - 1st a Harry vid closely followed by Tyrrells Workshop - in heaven! 👍
Next up will hopefully be RetroPower's Sunday upload.
Couldn’t have put it better myself. These two make Sunday evening compelling viewing. Always learn a few technical things from Iain as well which makes it all the better.
Ah, not the only car-nerd thinking that. Now if Ratarossa and/or no 27 upload, I'm set for the night.
@@GeneFraxby LOL I just said that then saw your comment. Have a great evening.
Doesn't it half feel like Xmas in Spring ?
Even though UA-cam is completely oversaturated with car channels it just goes to show that unique content can still be created, provided that is, you have 40 years experience working on exotic supercars and an encyclopedic knowledge of how they were made. Another incredible video, Iain.
yes
"You can't buy that noise". And he's talking about a door! Brilliant.
Yeah I could listen to him all day long, He's just brilliant, a charming true englishman, with that trademark humor. Not only a living encyclopedia but a man of many talents.
Best classic car commentary in the business.
Because Iain is a true petrol head..
Yes that gentleman knows his matter and most of all is able to really ''partage'' his obvius pleasure
Another great Sunday night brought by Tyrrell's classic workshop and Harry's Garage

The 3 advantages of dry sump lubrication:
1) It keeps the oil cool.
2) It offers a consistent oil supply.
3) It keeps the oil cool.
Now that’s cool 😎
The sound that car makes when you open it up is quite amazing. Lower down it’s a guttural roar but then when revs climb you get the beautiful song of an in-line 6. I could listen to that car do pulls all day.
We’re extremely proud to be one of Iain’s sponsors! Swing on by to our UA-cam channel to see the video on our 300SL Gullwing as well!
Thanks for helping to make this amazing channel possible!
With your help, Tyrrells Classic Workshop is one the best classic car channels on UA-cam. A mix of both videos would be perfect. Tech Talk with the glorious Mr. Tyrrell and driving the car with him. View from outside, to see the car driving - like the short views in your video - this would be perfect.
I cannot think of a better ambassador for your company.
Good job guys, keep it up!
everyone's a winner here.... a quality product and a legend of a wrencher presenter imho. Bravo
One of the best videos I've ever seen on UA-cam.
This isn’t only an extraordinary history lesson, it’s an Automotive engineering degree a la UA-cam! Brilliant content.
I have to say of all the videos I've watched on Iains wonderful channel, this has to be my favourite. This Mercedes is a work of art.
“Pulling like a train...” and then the beautiful noise topped off with Ian’s smile from ear to ear. As close as I’ll ever get, though
That sound. Bloody hell that’s good.
Absolutely... I might even settle for digitally engineered in via the speakers for that sound, if they could replicate it. Makes you wonder what AMG were thinking
Yes, all the exotic layouts like V10, V12, flat 12 etc sound nice- but a good, angry inline six can still compete with the best for pure sound.
Glorious.
The sound that straight six's make are often overlooked/forgotten.
@@NORWAYORNOWAY yeah, the problem is that's the sound of a fart can, no sign of engine sound left in it. Try to listen to an unmolested BMW straight six. That's the sound of a straight six. This is one is just "straight piped" I guess, fart noises producer.
That door close, the sound of quality and engineering.
I wish I still had my W123s .
and you can't buy it
Iain - Sir, ALWAYS remember that the vast majority of us cannot afford to buy, but just as importantly perform the PROPER maintenance and care these cars need...
Therefore watching the relish, the joy, the satisfaction you express AS WELL AS the history lessons, putting these cars in the context of their time- finally watching a Master Mechanice use the simple tools (a tube up to the ear for listening) to perform complex tests (a true learned art and skill!)...
Well, all of it is often the FINEST of things to sit and watch...
THANK YOU From all of us, we APPRECIATE YOU !!!
This channel is a piece of art. Thank you very much.
Exceptional video - encyclopaedic source of information
I hope that this mans knowledge will get passed on. Just awesome to listen to
Totally agree.

Cant agree more!
This is a masterpiece of a video.
Yes.
Thanks for taking us out in this, got goosebumps listening to it roar!
I drove a Gullwing in the late 80's. It's so far the best driving experience I've had!
If only Iain had been a teacher at my school, I might have lernt sumfin !
Stunning video of an incredible car, I love the way you bring a "real world" view of these supercars most of us that can only dream of seeing let alone sitting in and driving.
I sat in one...
Only recently discovered this fine channel and just wanted to commend you on how amazing it is to a car enthusiast. The level of detail Iain goes into on each car he presents is testament to his vast knowledge and experience. Each episode for me is like pouring over pages from favorite car magazine. Outstanding, thank you.
That smile tells the story about the 300 SL! LOVELY~
When you put your foot down I think that has the most pleasing acceleration sound I’ve ever heard, like a sound you might in a Star Wars moving going into hyper space!!
I agree. I've actually never heard anything like it? Most gullwings are museum pieces, how often do you get to hear one at full throttle with the car mic:ed up?
@@ingvarhallstrom2306 Not only mic'ed up but done properly, without the mics driven into distortion or wind noise. Very rare for YT vids.
You should try one of the W06 S SS SSK or SSKL series with the blower engaged .
@@ingvarhallstrom2306 I’ve passengered in one , also had a seat in the 300SLR Uhlenhaut Coupe and met the great man himself . The best sound ever though was my run in a 1927 W06 Mercedes S with the Rootes Kompressor which engaged at full throttle and made that wonderful scream ( but you could only use it in high gears and for just a few seconds ; except in the SSKL with the ‘elephant’ blower )
When Mercedes built properly engineered cars, you can feel and hear the quality in every thing it does. So rare to find this now.
Sadly so very true. Ask any experienced MoT tester. During my MoT "while you wait" appointment sat in the viewing area, a broken suspension spring rolled towards me. I asked what was that from. The friendly tester pointed to a nice looking Mercedes Estate parked next to my Rover 620ti being tested..
Some of the things he finds are shocking and undermine so called German engineering and reliability myth now. That since the main core of German car manufacturers decided to enter the volume car sectors mainly occupied by the likes of GM and Ford Worldwide as well as Japanese stuff. That they did very successfully as a glance at any UK road or car park would soon confirm. Thus unit costs means somethings had to suffer... and it shows.
Move on a few years and my immediate next door neighbour has a new Chinese built MG ZS EV parked where previously a Mercedes or Lexus stood previously. He told me that he is delighted with his MG EV and his final comment... "I'll never go back to petrol or diesel cars again". Now that is some change of mindset!
@@mgjohn8534 You are talking bullshit, buddy!
As a german Engineer (60) : true, it was all gone beginning of the 90th, when the Number-count-Dilberts took over and the Engineers got less and less power; plus other "funny" developments
Mercedes electrics are rubbish now
Thank you for taking us for a drive in such a wonderful car.
I've never heard such a sensuous, rich sounding I6 in my life. What an absolutely gorgeous sound 😍
Who needs Top Gear when you've got Iain, Harry's Garage, the Ratarossa and Number 27. That there folks is your 'real' Top Gear, how it's supposed to be. Thank you so much gentlemen!
If you like those then Furious Driving is well worth a look
ha! the same 4 channels I watch religiously...
Who ever needed TG since Clarkson appeared?
Iain and Harry yes. I will have to check out the Rat. 27 is not near the same experience or league, but is a nice guy. Iain and Harry are floating on a cloud in a special world.
So very true. They along with Edd China and Mike Brewer fill those massive voids in every edition of Clarkson's version of Top Gear. Clearly a "spannerphobe". Suspect he is one of those many car "Enthusiasts" who do not know where the bonnet release is on his cars. Not interested to find out what goes on under the bonnet at all and castigates James May at any attempt to explain things...
Always nice to hear LJK get a mention...
Much missed
THE guru.
Hi Neil, it's always nice to hear LJK mentioned. Much missed, I remember reading about the Toyota Soarer by LJK. He brought it alive for me.
I saw a Gullwing at Mercedes Benz World a few years ago. Such a beautiful car. Your knowledge of this car along with Lamborghini’s is amazing.
Surely in the top 10 of the most beautiful car designs simply a gorgeous example
So soon after WW2 to be making cars of this quality, amazing 👍.
Mercedes always had the most beautiful dashboards... up until the mid 70's...amazing car. Harry & Iain back to back on a Sunday... good stuff.
Then they started making safer dashboards in case of accident
As a fan of WW2 aircraft, I was impressed to learn that the BF109 had two, Bosch fuel pumps, the same as in the 300SL Gullwing. Spitfire’s Merlin motors used carburettors, and these would starve the motor or be way too rich under different fighting conditions, such as inverted flying and especially in a steep dive. “Miss Tilly’s orifice” was a restriction device that solved these problems.
“Miss Tilly’s Orifice”
😅
Wonderful. I was driving home from Goodwood once in a new Lotus. I thought I was pressing on, when John Surtees flew past me in his 300SL, I then followed him for a while. Very special.
That sounds so good, I think I need a sit down in a quiet room.
10/10 Ian, 10/10. You smashed this video out of the park. Bravo!
I could listen to Iain talk about cars all day.
Thoroughly enjoyed every second of this episode.
Imagine living on this road seeing Iain road testing these cars coming right past your home.
I’ve thought this too, probably every video I watch! Could they really be complaints?? Play it, play it again Sam…!!
And “When driving a 7 figure car….”!!
Tyrrell's Classic Workshop - the channel that keeps giving!
If only there were more frequent uploads. I wish he would've started making videos sooner. Just think of how many awesome cars went through his shop prior to his UA-cam channel.
Don't think I've ever seen such a big grin on Iain's face when he test drives a car. Wonderful stuff.
Or winding the clock.
How many can honestly answer "nice day at the office dear?".
I always knew the Gullwing was one amazing looking car, but I never knew all the details. I hadn’t realised it literally was a race car for the road. What a glorious sound when you’re ‘on it’, no wonder you’re grinning from ear to ear. Thanks for another fabulous video Iain.
This is as good as it gets, spitzenklass in other words. It is the channel to listen to, fantastic topics and stories.
With new Euro 7 emission standards we'll have nothing like this anymore, we have to preserve these cars at all costs to enjoy them
I used to live around 3 miles from these roads and still know the bends and straights like the back of my hand! It's completely amazing to see these cars in the hands of one of the most knowledgeable petrolheads on earth, driving these incredible vehicles on the roads I learnt to drive on, especially now that I live in a completely different country. The internet makes it possible - what a time to be alive!
Iain you did an admiral job of giving the viewer an excellent feeling for a Gullwing. Right down to an accurate sound track of the big pipe exhaust rasp, so special to the 300SL.
I'm a retired Star Technician award winner, multiple times. I serviced all M-B's from the 1950's up to 1990. My first 20 years of working with M-B, then 27 more years with BMW. I never felt the same sense of heritage, prestige, factory support, engineering and build quality with BMW. I'm reluctant to part with my 300SL manual, parts book and operation manual because of the great memories they give me. What a time for prestige automobiles in the 60's and 70's. I'll continue to view your other episodes. Cheers ✌️🇬🇧,🇺🇲.

Beautiful engine sound. This is the the first time ever, that I’ve seen one of these cars really driven. Kudos.
The noise this car makes is intoxicating... Just wow

What an amazing sound. Imagine seeing and hearing this car back in the day. Must have been truly mind-boggling.
The sound is unreal.
These videos beat anything on tv. You learn so much every time. Mercedes paying royalties to Jaguar. Unreal.
I rewatched intro several times listening to acceleration and seeing Ian's big grin.
Best classic car content I've seen.
Of all your videos that I've watched, the first time you got on it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I screamed, yes! Best engine sound yet.
The noise. Oh my god the noise. What a machine. Thanks for the content, loving this channel 🐐
As an enthusiast, I consider myself truly blessed to consume the wealth of knowledge Tyrrell and his team has to offer.
As a North American Scottish Frenchman, I don't know what to think.
I have always loved the 300 SL on looks and reputation alone but watching you drive the car through the onboard camera has made me love the car even more. Unless I win the lottery I will never be able to afford one but I still adore this car for its pure class.
I couldn't agree more, my lifetime dream car is a 300SL but I'll never be able to afford one. I can live my dream through people driving them so well like Iain.
Oh my.... There aren't too many car vids on UA-cam that make my knees go weak, slack jaw, and actually buy a lottery ticket, all while watching. Stunning car, a glorious showpiece for the skills of Tyrrell's Workshop.
What a gorgeous sound from that engine....
Loving this channel and all those incredible classics - kudos to Harry for introducing many of us to this wonderful workshop!
Another glorious video. I find it impossible to believe that someone could give this a thumbs down. Miserable souls the lot of them. Keep up the wonderful work. Each video is both a treat and an education.
Absolutely gorgeous.
2 UA-cam channels that represent the pinnacle of classic automotive, Harry’s Garage and Tyrrell’s Classic Workshop…
My mother absolutely adored these. Talk about the most exotic car us southerners had ever seen! It started a lifelong obsession with most of the SL series up to the end of the 80's. There was a gentleman here in Houston who owned one one these original Gullwings back in the early 70's that we used to drive across town just to get a glimpse of. He had a lot of neat stuff, but the gullwing was pretty much his daily driver for 20-something years
Harry Metcalf has created a monster, this channel is now better than Harry's Garage.
Absolutely agree.
Both are a bit different in their own right
@@yodaddamilkman8422 I love them both. My regular fix of car-admiring would have a great chunk taken out of it if either of them were to disappear. Thankfully no sign of that happening!
Couldn’t agree more. Favourite episodes are when Harry takes one of his cars to Ian. Pure gold.
That engine sound, even better when you let go of the accelerator!
Thoroughly enjoyed that. Well done.
Twelve year old me travelled up to London by train in the mid-1950s to attend the Motor Show at Earls Court. Castle Class steam locomotive hauled was another fine experience for a twelve year old schoolboy. Soon after arrival found the Mercedes-Benz exhibition stand but... NO 300sl Gull Wing! What a disappointment!
After the Exhibition, wandered around London looking at the sights. Guess what. Parked outside the Dorchester Hotel, a silver 300sl Gull Wing. There is a God after all ...
Last time I saw a silver 300sl was about twenty five years ago passing through Andoversford in Gloucestershire. It was being driven preciously slowly, actually holding me up in my MG Montego Turbo. Now there's a thing. Truly fabulous car and to see one in the still somewhat WWII impoverished for most working class folks in 1950s UK was a very special treat for a schoolboy. Soon after the London experience, saw another one parked outside a Hotel in Cheltenham, schoolboy me passing on my Bike... maybe the same one. Cannot say.
Still my all time favourite car. Double ...👍..👍 from me.
So, if it had not been for that visionary North American Entrepreneur offering to fund a thousand, that fine example of 1950s Motoring would be even rarer ... possibly extinct now except in Museums.
The opening scene of that engine tone. Music to my ears.
Never a faster click!
I will be watching this a great many number of times. Many thanks for posting.
Spot on
I just love to hear him say, “ She’s pulling like a TRAIN!” Of course, with the background music of that engine/exhaust.
Wow, now this is one of my all time favourite cars, would be a dream to own one, very very nice!
Always loved the shape and look of this iconic Mercedes but had never heard one put through it's paces. Now I understand......Wow, what a sound that engine makes. Thanks Iain.
I was sitting in one of these yesterday - a wonderful experience. So beautifully built and finished - the switchgear still so precise after all these years. Didn’t drive it though, so it is wonderful to hear and see you driving this one.
Wish my brand new E Class was made with as much quality- oh how Mercedes’ has fallen!
Just glorious. 2 of my all-time favourites. Mr Tyrrell and his team are motoring royalty.

What a soundtrack, so addictive.
The sound of this Mercs engine is sheer poetry in motion. Always a pleasure to watch and listen to. Cheers.
The videos, the cars, and the damn history lessons - they just get better with every video. Thanks again Iain + team!
Such a beautiful and incredibly well engineered car, which fully deserves it's legendary status. What a sound from that six cylinder engine too.
I could listen to Ian for hours. He could talk about the most mundane thing and make it so interesting going into everything into it finer detail whilst also referencing things you could never image would be linked
OMG that opening soundtrack!!!! Clicked like before 10 seconds had played. Thanks Iain.
Hi Iain, thank you so much for your in-depth report of the Mercedes SL300 and really enjoyed it and I am looking forward to your next review. 👍👍👍
I had the rare pleasure of seeing a 300SL Gullwing parked on a street in Surfers Paradise in the early 1960s. Actually it was a double pleasure as a young lady wearing a dress was clambering in to the passenger seat backwards across that wide sill as I passed by. I didn't notice the colour of the car.
I have heard and read many people describe the unobtanium that is the Gullwing. Being born in the early 50s the Mercedes SLs always interested me, from the Gullwing and it's roadster sibling through the Pagoda and on into contemporary models. The Gullwing will always be special and this posting sets a standard for automotive video journalism - Iain's description of the Gullwing makes the car come alive - through it I can see, hear and almost feel the car and come to an appreciation of it's advanced design and technical implementation and the joys of classic supercar maintenance.
Bravo!
The sound of the straight six and manual gearbox defined an era.
Fascinating video. I'm blown away by the link between a bf109's fuel system and the 300sl!
Daimler Benz constructed and build the V12 watercooled engines for the Me109 fighters, whereas BMW did the same with a 14 cylinder, aircooled double- starengine for the FW190 fighter.
if you had to sum that video up in one word what would it be ? my go ....... poetry . thank you for such an enjoyable video , its the smiles that did it for me
Thank God for blessing us with this channel.
Thanks Iain, fantastic video. What an engine note : puts all the modern ‘performance cars’ induced pops and bangs (and usually) DSG cars to shame .
I said it last week , I'll say it again !! Soo nice to really learn and understand how vehicles came about. Thankyou so much Ian :)
The smile on your face when test driving says it all, beautiful car and beautifully restored 👌👍
