We love our Defender, bought it some 21 years ago in London as we both were attending their Royal Free Medical School. Weekends were often spent touring with classmates. Initially, we had planned on selling it before returning, then decided a road trip of Europe and China would be nice. We joined the Peace Corps as physician's and spent some 11 years touring the continent. On our return to California, shipped our rig to Port Elizabeth, NJ and drove to San Francisco where we purchased a Townhouse in the Tenderloin District and began a total interior refit. Our youngest girl is an avid skier and she uses Mulberry for trips to Tahoe.
Your customization of this truck is so fucking cool, it doesn't even look real. It looks more like something in a good graphic novel! Can't wait to see the interior tour!
Feels strange to have finally caught up after bingeing. Lots of Defender fans here in Kenya, spent many hours in them and they do love to leak 😂. Looking forward to seeing Uma sailing on the east African coast!
I’ve been waiting for this tour! I think what you guys have done to the truck is really cool. And that you can ship it anywhere in the world when you want to mix things up is really convenient.
@computiNATEor totally agree, but it's turned into more than a farm truck. When all the gamies come down to the village sometimes to meet in the village and there's 20/30/40 of these on the street its amazing. To be used by the SAS during the WW2. It's more than a farm truck, in my opinion.
If I may...your 'farm truck' is actually a brilliantly engineered British innovation. In 1947 Maurice Wilks took the Willis Jeep and redesigned it as the Land Rover to meet the restrictions of materials in the post WW2 world of Britain. It went into production in 1948. The resulting innovation has many unique features including low gear 4 wheel drive, locking differentials and a power take off that allowed British farmers to use the Land Rover to pull a variety of farm machinery across fields. The Land Rover quickly became the 'must have' vehicle for expeditions, armed forces, farmers and adventurers around the world. It stayed in production (subjected to engineering advances) for 75 years. Your adventures and life on your Land Rover has a deep history of development and worldwide use. Welcome to eternal British engineering!!
I drove a rover all over Germany on road and off road from 72-75. I was in the Brit. army. If we drove a truck it was a Bedford hi-lo ratio, 4 wheel drive.
I just love seeing the systems you've designed to work for you. Like the removable storage on the roof. You identify real problems and find such organized and aesthetic solutions to them. Clearly the minds of architects at work.
Lived on a DZ in my 24' Class C motorhome for 15 years. LOVED it. I'm whatever's the opposite of claustrophobic. Got married, bride was having none of that nonsense, so I had to get used to home ownership again. BUT, we did not buy a couch. We bought a futon ... 😁
If you do a Norway winter road trip and fancy company (a second truck for potential recovery purposes), gimme a shout. I drove up into the Arctic Circle from the UK in 2020. There are some epic roads and routes. I have a good schedule which can be adjusted to accommodate whatever speed you like to drive and how long/per day you are comfy driving. I've just had my truck fully serviced and need a snowy road trip to test it out.
Love it! So much personalization for your travels. It’ll be interesting to see the cost of shipping to different parts of the world when you’re back on Uma.
From what we've seen so far, if we don't need it fast, we can ship a 20ft container anywhere in the world for about $2k. So not cheap... but better than buying, or even renting something when we get there. And we don't need to ship it everywhere, just across the major oceans once or twice.
I lived in a 34' motor home for two years. You guys have more stuff on the outside of the vehicle than I had in my whole rig. Amazing. And we haven't seen the inside yet.🙂🙂
Wow all those modifications are really impressive. It would be very interesting if you could also explain how you do it for the regular car inspection. ;) Thank you for these awesome videos
Great adaptations. The paint flake that had come off on the bonnet/hood had some rust on the now open metal - question is if the rust came after the flake fell of or if the rust pushed it off. Seems a thing to look a bit deeper into. The awning - first thing I thought, wow, you only need a few tent poles, some cloth and you can turn that into a bungalow tent.
The awning has velcro all around the edge, and has poles/legs that can be deployed. They already make an attachable "wall" that wraps around it for added enclosure. We just don't have it....yet.
Love how you guys have fun and also create top notch videos, do seriously good truck selection and upgrades! Then the whole boat project too. As the truck is the nearest thing to a couch, perhaps she needs some re-touching every now and then? There's nothing like regular maintenance.
Hey kika, it’s actually called a snorkel. It’s used to raise the Air intake to keep water spray that can hydro lock the engine. In fact, if it’s installed properly, you can drive through a creek without hydro locking the engine. Do some research and take note that you already have a proper off road snorkel and it should work so long as it’s installed properly.
As always, you plan and implement projects like superstars… you took a plane assed Land Rover and tweaked it to be the coolest functional home on wheels anyone would ever want … ok, wow us again on the inside mods, can’t wait!
Excellent truck and great updates tour. You could 3D print a new extended and curved mirror arm. That would give you a better rear view, and clear the rain guard. The arm won't hit the uh snorkle due to the curve of the printed arm ??
I bet you could transit the farm truck to any country in the world with one of Nate and Kara's daily drop Pro plane deals! if not, my uncle drove his Mustang from Germany back to Canada I'm sure you can go anywhere by land or by Sea in style! Thanks for Sharing!
Small point of little interest. The "Diamond" pattern on your protective plate is widely known as "chequer plate". Those that play board game will understand. The raised bits can come in a different pattern known as "Durbar Pattern".
Simply an awesome vehicle and your upgrades to it have been fantastic. I'd say she needs a name, and at least by the end of Uma's refit, she deserves a new paint job. :)
I love you both I enjoy your videos please let me know how much you bought the truck and how much you spent on upgrades so far are you planning to sell the truck in feature thank you
Cool video! Reminds me of growing up in northern Australia in the late 70s/ early 80s. My sister and I as little kids bouncing around in the back of the Toyota Landcruiser on bush roads on our way to school. Really enjoyable show and good information. Thanks!
Since the mirror arm can flip out of the way if it's bumped, could you add a small block/protrusion between the air intake and the mirror arm that will cause the mirror to fold in when you open the passenger door? Maybe something with a roller at the end so as the mirror arm hits, it's not being scratched by the block?
I am sure a customizer would pay you, for an official design on that truck as a side job. You are architects so I am sure you could do the drawings and spec. Or you could just put it out as a book.
People in North America would give kidney to own that "truck". I didn't say my kidney, just someones kidney. 😮 The upgrades were well worth the effort use you 've gotten out them.
Farm Truck!!!! As a big fan of the Land Rover Defender (not the new one though, not yet at least), AND having spent years in one when I was serving in the British Army, it is far from being a 'farm truck', whatever that is. I hate LED headlights lol… on ordinary roads for busy areas, they blind you. Half the time it looks like the person has full beam on, when really they don’t as it’s just the LED strength.
Not the lights fault. They just need to be adjusted properly. We have a dial inside that turns the angle of the beam up and down so we can dial it in depending on how much weight we have in the back.

@SailingUma Yes lol, having owned over 60 cars I found that to be true also. In several video shots, one wheel appears to be pointing forward while the other looks to be toed out significantly. Didn't know if it was just the video angle, but I saw it twice. You got new wheels and tires so I assume you got it aligned at that time? Literally exactly the same experience when I discovered this channel a couple of years ago
I can't believe I was engaged for half an hour when I usually skip ahead to the inside on boat, car, or house tours. Well done.
That was a very cool episode! Love all the work you have done on the truck! Very Smart! Looking forward to the next episode.
No frills, everything has a place and a good reason for being there. Can’t wait for the interior.

It’s not a farm truck, its a land rover, an amazing piece of British history.
… which was designed to be a farm truck. It had a power take off like a Model T or a tractor. Nothing wrong with that.
@computiNATEor totally agree, but it's turned into more than a farm truck. When all the gamies come down to the village sometimes to meet in the village and there's 20/30/40 of these on the street its amazing. To be used by the SAS during the WW2. It's more than a farm truck, in my opinion.

...and a seriously lousy turning circle. Only Americans would find it acceptable. But you can't have everything.
As a British person, it’s a farm truck.
Once you have made it on UA-cam the Land Rover can be referred to as a farm truck.
@@vynleshmynle7372that’s a risky precedent to set there.
I drove a rover all over Germany on road and off road from 72-75. I was in the Brit. army. If we drove a truck it was a Bedford hi-lo ratio, 4 wheel drive.
Leave it to a couple of architects to build out an awesome 4wd camper for full time living ; ) Bravisimo !

Sadly the boat, no matter what they do, won't be a as good as if they bought something newer.
Any other UA-cam channel would have the truck conversion/upgrade as the main focus and theme - sailing uma does that and a boat lol.
You guys nailed practicality utility and esthetics. What a kickass unit you created here.

What inspection? Here they only check a few basic parameters every 2 years.
Great adaptations. The paint flake that had come off on the bonnet/hood had some rust on the now open metal - question is if the rust came after the flake fell of or if the rust pushed it off. Seems a thing to look a bit deeper into.

No, Kika is correct. It’s a raised air intake to avoid the dust. A snorkel needs to be water tight. Land Cruiser 78 owner here.

In my country, it is common to call them snorkels as nickname for them. You, as an engineer, used the right name for it.
Hello,
I'm convinced that somehow you managed to hide an inflatable couch in this nice truck !! ;) nice job , as usual bye
I just spent a week binge watching your videos, awesome content here! Also, I think I’ll get lasik 👍
You have been making a "Swiss army knive" kind of vehicle out of a normal Landrover Defender . Nice work you two !
The biggest benefit of those rain guards is they prevent the whomp whomp air pressure changes when windows are open.
Excellent truck and great updates tour.
You could 3D print a new extended and curved mirror arm.
That would give you a better rear view, and clear the rain guard. The arm won't hit the uh snorkle due to the curve of the printed arm ??
That tilting roof I bet really helps with your solar energy capture.
Beautiful home on wheels

What happens to the Defender when you complete Uma's renovations?
In recent past videos they mentioned they gonna keep/ship/store the Defender for land side exploration as they sail Uma. So I remember.
