Hey mat, I’m an engine builder, I did an f10 m5 engine that was completely flooded a couple months ago, same situation. You will definitely need a block otherwise the cylinder will start to score and it will eat a lot of oil. Some machine shops can sleeve aluminum blocks by cutting in and inserting a sleeve. Don’t forget to get all of the valves grinded and polished. You will have low compression If you don’t. The oil pump will have a lot of water inside of it. I recommend taking it apart to completely drain and clean it because water will wipe out the bearings first thing. On my engine the corrosion actually ate into my heads a little bit so I had to take them to the machine shop to get them decked. So make sure if you have any corrosion or rust spots that your head surfaces are straight. Otherwise everything else it just taking apart, cleaning, replacing seals and gaskets, putting back together. Good luck
Yeah, you're spot on there. When it comes to aluminum block cylinders, they usually have coatings like Alusil or Nikasil because aluminum is soft and wears out extremely quickly. The coating is very strong, however once that coating gets even a tiny bit damaged, it's basically game over for the cylinders-they start to degrade super fast. If there's corrosion, that lining is toast. Sleeving might seem like a fix but it's tough to nail the precise tolerances even for the best shops, and often doesn't hold up-ends up either wearing out too quickly or just doesn't fit right. Plus, it messes with how the engine handles heat. Really, the only surefire fix is swapping out the block.

Hi Matt! Pulled some strings with friends at Porsche and a standard safety feature is that the engine is shutdown on impact and when the air bags are deployed. Happy to share more details.
Pyro fuse blown is a good sign. It acts as a main power shutoff to any downstream electrical components including all of the other fuses in the main block. The fact that you have continuity in the other fuses is actually good news as it shows that the pyro fuse did it's job and cut power to the car before the water could cause shorts or other damage to the rest of the electrical systems. If those other fuses had popped, then you would have cause for concern.
I was about to say exacly that, thats correct. most likely the electronics will be fine as long they remove and clean any rust if present, before turning it on
Depends on the manufacturer. With the blue porsche they managed to start it even with a blown pyro fuse by push starting it, since it cut power only to the starter

Your dad is the best, his expressions are hilarious, you are lucky to be working everyday with him, doing what you both love doing. My dad died from an aorta that ruptured back in 1994, i was only 23. He taught me a lot about being an honest, hard working adult. My dad and grandpa taught me how to work on car's, and everything else you could use a kid for free labor back in the day lol. I miss them, but watching you work together brings back some good memories. I'm down fot awhile, because i had knee replacement surgery on the 25th, and the surgeon didn't get it through his head when i told him that an MRI from 2018 showed a cyst in the tibia, probably from the ACL reconstruction, and other surgeries i had back in 09 from a work accident. I also told the guy the same MRI showed a ganglion cyst behind my knee, which he kept trying to tell me was a baker's cyst, two totally different thing's. Anyway, he says it should take 45 minutes or less to fix. More than 3 hour's later, the dr. says it went okay, and he would talk to me the next day. Hi PA came in with him, started to talk about the surgery, and he cuts her off, and says it was a mess in there, and that's all i know, because he changed the subject to the nerve block pump, and some knee exercises. They came in early to take some blood tests, and were giving me i.v. antibiotics to for some reason. I felt sick after having the surgery, and kinda light headed, but went home. I started feeling worse, the stuff in the nerve block pump was making me really feel worse, so i called the company, who said to shut it down, and remove the catheter. I went to the hospital app, and looked up the blood tests they did before, and after surgery, and was really pissed. My rbc, haemoglobin, hematocrit, and cbc were all on the low side, my hemoglobin dropped by 5 point's, which means i lost a lot of blood from that surgery. My white blood count was normal before surgery, and was really high afterwards. I'm taking antibiotics for some of nd of infection they told me nothing about. The dr. also said the incision would be around 3 inches, but yesterday, i took the wrap off the dressing, and i have a huge ass incision, it's about 10-12 inches long. Tomorrow, somebody better tell me something, because we had Thanksgiving over here in the state's, i have been waiting to call and find out what the heck happened during the 3 hour's i was knocked out. This video has helped get my mind off this whole mess i have going on. The two guy's in the wreck are lucky they weren't hurt bad, or worse. I think you will get this sorted, and be driving a car on the bucket list. Your laugh cracks me up everytime, you always keep looking towards a solution, and that's how you get stuff done. G-d bless from a lady in Michigan, USA.
This car looks like a money pit and MAt quite rightly is questioning it. I'm sure he could but he would lose out massively financially. What does he even have worth anyhting at this point?
I’ve rebuilt a Porsche flat 6 due to crank damage. The biggest hurdle is that you require special tools to put the pistons back onto the rods on one side of the engine, it’s all done blind hence the tools are an absolute must. I made the tools when I used to work for a large machining company. I may actually still have them in my garage and can check for you. Essentially it’s a couple of long rods with specifically machined parts at the end to allow fitting of the grudge on pins and the ring clips to secure the pins into the piston. I think there may still be a full build thread of mine with detailed photos on the 986forums if they still exist. Date would have been around mid 2009 ish
Matt please stay committed to this build, I was so excited when I saw another episode, this is my dream car! I will gladly watch all episodes on this build, everyone else is scared to build a Porsche engine, but I know you can figure it out and have all the resources! I Wish you well
Hi Mat, the cylinders can have the coating stripped chemically and then to be recoated, you don't have deep scoring. That is the procedure for motorcycle cylinders that are scored. You are very lucky, UK has the companies to do this process. Good luck!
This is the way to go, dont listen to that nonsense of drilling the block to install new sleeves, aluminum and steel expand and contract at different temperatures, that repair will not work for alusil coated engines. Just look at M539 engine rebuild nightmares with the Alpina B7 Project Chicago.
Motorcycle engines can be sleeved. There’s a company in California that does it. What I don’t understand stand is why nobody is willing to do the same with these engines
Ouch. So you've effectively spent £100k for an engine that is rusted inside and could be terminal. And £45k for a broken tub. Fair play... You're the absolute KING of lost causes. I might watch the video twice from 2 different accounts to help you make it back 🤣
FWIW, I'd quit while you're ahead. You're going to spend almost as much as a new one (probably OVER the official list price). For a bastardised, crash damaged one. Deffo not worth it... Unless the income from the videos linked to it makes it worth it 🤷♂️
true but if it was running at all when sucking in water it almost certainly hydro-locked and bent the rods/maybe damaged crank, practically building a new engine at that point...
REBUILD IT!!! Make this a 20 episode series! 1hr long each we’ll watch them!! The dream of seeing that car running again is what we want to see happen ❤
There is no such thing in Germany that doesn’t allow you to register a car anymore. as long you fix it and it does pass TÜV inspection, you are good to go!
sieht man ja auch an den US Importen. In den Staaten zu gefährlich als dass sie nochmal auf die Straße dürfen aber bei uns darf sowas unbehelligt noch weiterfahren...
@@sedontane you can sell whatever you want…if a car burns down, you can sell a hand full of ashes. you just can’t sell a car without accident damage when you fixed it! TÜV is checking every used car every 2 years and they decide if it’s roadworthy or not!
you are not right about those fuses... if they were blown it meant that something in circuit was shorted (for example by water) so good fuses is GOOD for you because it tells you that pyro fuse done its job fast enough...
@@alancraig248 Wrong. A pyrofuse shuts off all electrical power in a vehicle, not just the power to the starter: How it works When a vehicle detects a signal, it generates an ignition current that activates the pyrofuse. This causes an explosive charge to push a piston downward, which cuts through an aluminum strip and disconnects the battery system.
Go to Hartech in the UK they do lots of machining work and rebuilding porsche engines so you could maybe even go to a 4.2L engine. they do similar stuff compared to DeMan in the US, I'm personally using LN engineering in the US for my GT4 engine rebuild I'm currently doing going to a 4.25L engine which its getting bored and I'm putting a stroker crankshaft and it has a pretty similar block comparted to the gt3 and Matt timing the engine is super simple you use the special tools to lock the camshafts on one side, then put the crankshaft at u 3/6 then you bolts those cams down then turn the engine over 1 time to u 3/6 again then bolt down the cams on the other side.
One advantage of going that route (i.e. boring out the block), is you’ll get rid of all the issues in the cylinders, then the block gets coated with Nikasil which basically brings the cylinders back to new. It’s likely more expensive than a new block, *but* the possibilities are pretty enticing.
@@thejackamo yeah and he only would need to change the pistons as the titanium rods dont need to be replaced when doing these kinds of rebuilds DeMan re-uses the rods for the 4.5L cars they build, I've personally worked on a 4.5L 992 gt3 and that thing was mad.
@ used to own one of the first 4.5 GT4s made, absolute riot of a power plant. Rick’s since done some 991.2 RSes and 992 GT3s, so I think he’d be really interested in getting a motor out of a 992 RS in the shop
150k lost is 150k lost whether its now or when you try to get it back on sale but for my own selfish reasons I would love to see this thing get finished. you truly inspire me and make me want to actually finish my car. good luck brother
The skills you keep acquiring are amazing. It used to be replacing a panel or a sub frame and putting massive wheels and a straight exhaust on it. (Which is not trivial for most people). Now you are stripping and building a Porsche engine. Legendary.
Get the block and pistons etc to a quality engineer and get them to rebore and coat the barrels and exchange for replacement pistons and rods. Could come nicely under the cost of a replacement block etc.
You've attracted the attention of a Porsche technician since 1998, who is a qualified technician and trainer on all Porsche cars including Carrera GT and 918 spyder, and high voltage. The way you are working on the engine is painful to watch. Please get the right tools when reassembling. As for the cylinders you may not need a new block. You overbore the engine and press steel liners in. You won't be able to buy these off the shelf, but it can be done at most reputable engineering shops.
Rebuild it mate! We want u to win…we haven’t seen u giving up on any rebuild so as this one too…Mat you’ve got this man we believe in you… Let’s get this Porsche back to work 🥳🤩
You can bore it out and recoat it we do it al the time after a cilinder blows out with the high end racing scooters that run at 14.000 rpm its an nicasil coating thats sprayd on
Mat this is absolutely insane. This is easily the craziest video you've edited. Those jump cuts with dialogue are bonkers and so cool to watch. You've come such a long way in the last couple years. Keep going!
NOOOOOO Mat, rotary wire brush on the cylinder was a TERRIBLE idea.. you've ruined anything that was left of the honed finish which is absolutely critical for piston ring wear and lubrication. Worse yet you've spread steel fibres all over the engine and down the oil galleries which will destroy your bearing shells and bearing surfaces.
I think you and I go through similar struggles lol I just want uploads and that's it every Sunday last week I died and had to rewatch rashfords mansory rebuild lol
good luck whichever way you go. remember there's always a third option- rather than go ahead with the build or decide against it, this could be one you put to the side for a while, wait for second hand parts to become more readily available (and porsche will clear their backlog eventually), and come back to it after a year or two.
Well, due to the extensive damage (basically every panel on the car + the fact that it was submerged in water) this car is the perfect opportunity not to REBUILD it, but to BUILD it... Fix the engine, tune it and put a fully custom body on the car that will make it truly unique… This car will never be worth the same as one with a clean title (tho), not even as a car that has had a minor/moderate accident, even if you repair it to factory condition + the damage is extensively documented on UA-cam, once fixed, I personally wouldn't never bought this car even if the price was greatly reduced due to the intensity of the damage. This makes this car perfect for a custom build.
Not only have I learned a ton about cars and engines from watching your videos but I also know if there’s anyone that could rebuild that car it’s you and your team. You got this!
I believe you’ve overcome even greater challenges in the past, and this is no different. You’ve built an incredibly strong community, and we’re all here to support you however we can. I use to buy a lot of flood cars and salvage cars. Especially high end stuff. A couple times we bought Bentleys with lockup motors. We were success freeing the motor up by filling the cylinders with Diesel fuel. Let it sit for about 10 days, and we're able to turn the motor over.
Rebuild it man please buy all the things i know its easy to say hard to do but we all know you can do it you have always found a way to do it and you can do this too rooting for you ❤❤
If I were building this GT3, I’d turn it into a track-only car, focusing on making it as lightweight and performance-oriented as possible. First, I’d rebuild the engine by increasing the bore diameter and upgrading the pistons, as suggested in the comments. Then, I’d install a roll cage for safety and strip out all unnecessary parts, like headlights, interior trims, and carpets. This would reduce both weight and costs, and I could even sell the removed parts to make some extra money. Since it's a track-only car, it wouldn’t need to be registered with the DVLA, and it could be used in any country for its intended purpose. If everything goes as planned, this could turn into an epic rebuild.
Do it, Mat! I'm sure you can rebuild this car! It's going to be the most legendary GT3 RS on the internet! Greetings from Spain! I can't stop watching your videos... so excited for the next one!

this is by far the most impressive build I've ever seen on youtube, 2 cars from two countries where you don't even live! Amazing content as always Mat!
Send the engine out to the machine shop. They can bore out the cylinders and put in slightly larger pistons. Bigger cylinder and piston = larger displacement = more power😊
Hi Matt, The main fuse is the only one that's meant to go. Long haul rebuild only because the water etched into the block. You can do it however when you rebuild get the pro tools, do not rely on your paint marks! Great show. Cheers

Now that you basically got a skeleton of a GT3 you can go anywhere with this project, like others have mentioned it wont be profitable for anyone but it would make one hell of a youtube series. Really hope you could turn this into some insane and 1 of a kinda GT3RS.
Matt if UA-cam pays you enough money to rebuild this car no matter the cost it’s fantastic to watch. What a learning curve it will be as well. No one else on this planet would have even got this far. Do it
You should make a plan, so if you were realistically going to rebuild it look at the body work; the panels etc. First see if they actually work or no. Second, if you are going to rebuild the engine you will need to replace a few bits for the pistons. Third, take a voltmeter/ ammeter to test if the equipment works, and the circuits work, (Checking outputs and Inputs). Finally add the cost of this plan up and see would it be worth the hassle and money, because you don't want to spend more than you can make off the series for this. Although I hope the best of luck for this build and would love to see it finished. (Remember the memories you make are more important)
Can't you tell that the more impossible the rebuild is the more views the video gets? It is all 'on purpose really', and even the fuse bit, they've could have checked them before but what they show in the video is up to them. That's why these videos are so entertaining and get views, because you are constantly on edge and think - "are they gonna get over this problem or not?"
Matt, it’s a no brainier, there’s not a car out there that you and your team can’t rebuild. You have so many friends out there that know how to get things done. Forget the cost as you have so many fans out there that just want to see this car coming to life and back out on the road, so it’s a yes from me…. Good luck.
@Mat Armstrong get in touch with Capricorn Automotive. They may actually be able to help you save the block. We had a similar issue with an Audi RS4 with Nikasil bores and we’re actually able to get the cylinders lined!
You can fit different size pistons/hypereutectic pistons if you do this as well. Looks closed deck, so may have some grace on overboring these cylinders and recoating them.
This is one of those times I think only you would attempt a full rebuild like this. If the payout for it being completed is worth it go for it even if you have to rebuild the gearbox too.
If you are doing an ad, please dont do an ad in the middle of turning the engine. Just do it as a separate segment. Really killed the moment when you are turning the engine.
Might go against the grain but I the way Mat does Ads is brilliant, always includes them into the video seamlessly and half the time don’t realise it’s a ad until half way through
its happening a lot with UA-cam videos lately seen others do it as well i guess they realized most people will skip that segment this way it makes you watch the ad to find out what's happening
That's exactly why he's doing it, it's something a lot of big youtubers like Mr Beast are doing, and I wouldn't be surprised if advertisers are now asking for it, as it's the only way they can keep retention, as most of us just fast forward through the ads.
Be careful turning the engine over with no oil film in any of the big end bearings or mains, also bit late now but always remove the chain before taking off the cam caps as it cocks the cams to one end and can destroy the cam bearings as the bottom gets pushed into the ally head, we had this on a head at work this week, customer didn’t remove cam caps in the right pattern and it cracked the thrust face on the camshaft
Remarkable isn't it. Will spend over a hundred thousand on an unknown he doesn't understand.... but won't spend on correct tool and a manual. This level of over confidence is the reason we have cat a and b in the system.
So many hate comments about how he does things 😂😂😂 he has rebuilt cars most of us will never be able to afford, yet people think they know better. Keep up the good work bro, love the content🎉

Before buying parts, I’d check the gearbox, the modules, harnesses etc etc for any water damage. Then tot-up how much any replacement parts are gonna be to see if it’s financially viable 👌
The financial equation doesn't matter here. It's for content. Mat will come out ahead no matter what the loss is on the car itself.

I was about to say exacly that, thats correct. most likely the electronics will be fine as long they remove and clean any rust if present, before turning it on
Exactly!
Agreed, was confused why he was upset at that moment. Showed the electrics in the car should be good. Plus, It was in fresh water, not salt water.
I fully agree, that was my first thoughts aswell

Easy to say when it's not your money.
Thankful I survived this accident as the passenger. Coming back home to my family after this hit different 🙏🏽

I second this!
@@rmflom12any idea how many cars have aluminium block with different material sleeves? A lot.
@@rmflom12oh i forgot about that one. That was a nightmare indeed
Unless the income from the videos linked to it makes it worth it 🤷♂️
Mat, you can re-sleeve any engine with aluminium liners. Aluminium liners seal better and are used to get more power primarily.
true but if it was running at all when sucking in water it almost certainly hydro-locked and bent the rods/maybe damaged crank, practically building a new engine at that point...
Darton dry sleeves ftw

Get AC50 down the engine it will work ten times better than WD it was the American airforce and the RAF use, it’s worth a shot
you are not right about those fuses... if they were blown it meant that something in circuit was shorted (for example by water) so good fuses is GOOD for you because it tells you that pyro fuse done its job fast enough...
pyro fuse only cuts power to the starter, not the other electronics
@@adityapatki1693Wrong
Pyro fuse inhibits the starting of a car "after " the incident, not during.
Fuses will not blow when under water either!!! 😊
@@alancraig248 Wrong.
A pyrofuse shuts off all electrical power in a vehicle, not just the power to the starter:
How it works
When a vehicle detects a signal, it generates an ignition current that activates the pyrofuse.
And Hartech would let him film it as they did recently for Jayemm On Cars.

no way the car would sell now at a auction. Everyone knows the engine is dead and possibly the electronics and trans. Its a scrap car.
the guy paid $150k over sticker, so lost a lot more (or maybe his insurance lost it :D)
The car sell for about 350k he still considerably lower
@@angelicdemise6224 imagine paying $350k + $150k extra over sticker. That’s basically the story
The jump cuts between US and UK are just great. So much fun.
Yea I'm sure that's repairable by the right people and possibly at a fraction of the new block cost.
rebore doesn't work cause of the coating.
yeah , was thinking the same , rebore, coat, larger pistons, forged rods and he'll get more power and save some money.

In case you haven't seen, the engine block is trash anyways since the corrosion ate away the coating.
Always block the oil and water galleries before cleaning.

good luck whichever way you go. remember there's always a third option- rather than go ahead with the build or decide against it, this could be one you put to the side for a while, wait for second hand parts to become more readily available (and porsche will clear their backlog eventually), and come back to it after a year or two.
Well, due to the extensive damage (basically every panel on the car + the fact that it was submerged in water) this car is the perfect opportunity not to REBUILD it, but to BUILD it...
Fix the engine, tune it and put a fully custom body on the car that will make it truly unique…
This car will never be worth the same as one with a clean title (tho), not even as a car that has had a minor/moderate accident, even if you repair it to factory condition + the damage is extensively documented on UA-cam, once fixed, I personally wouldn't never bought this car even if the price was greatly reduced due to the intensity of the damage.
This makes this car perfect for a custom build.

I use to buy a lot of flood cars and salvage cars. Especially high end stuff. A couple times we bought Bentleys with lockup motors. We were success freeing the motor up by filling the cylinders with Diesel fuel. Let it sit for about 10 days, and we're able to turn the motor over.
Bore it out & put stronger rods & pistons in it Mat. It’s not like it’s gonna have any sort of warranty so build something unique.
I think that's a great plan tbf!
