The worst part about learning/lvl'ing a tank isnt the class nor the buttons to push. Its the "YOU SUCK!", "GO FASTER!", "BIGGER PULLS!" kids screaming in Timewalking dungeons. The Hunter thats running ahead and pulling -everything- MD'ing to you. And the mage and retri paladin that doesnt give you more than 1,5 second to get 2000% threat before they go apesh!t crazy with DPS pulling aggro on everything you're trying to tank. My best advise if you wanna try/learn tanking is doing it with friends and not randoms.
If you plan on learning in timewalking youre setting yourself up for failure. Time walking is literally a race to get finished because everyone is using it to level. If you want to learn Id recommend TWW dungeons. If youre doing timewalking for more exp you have to understand why ppl are there
As Graavytrain said, I recommend running War Within dungeons to learn. You should be pulling big in Timewalking. Those are all old mechanics anyways and not any of the tank mechanics you’ll actually be dealing with in the modern game. People are in Timewalking to level faster, so you can’t be surprised when they want to speed run.
Funny I got kicked out of a time walking because I took a different route in a dungeon and hunter was pulling everything then he started complaining and kicked me out for no reason
I enjoy my Brewmaster, even though (or because?) I don't tank at the highest difficulties. Been playing the game since the beginning, and I find that the passive mitigation afforded by Stagger can be very forgiving due to its reactive nature. When the amount of damage queued up in the stagger bar starts to be a concern, we can just delete big chunks and pretend that it never happened. It can heal, absorb, and mitigate damage. Fairly well rounded. Folks talk about button bloat, but it's fairly simple to break into. Keg Smash and set baddies on fire. Two different ways to kick them in the face for good measure. Then spend excess energy on either a punch to the jaw or a third spinning kick for AoE. Utilize your "tank" buttons as needed while using those DPS-type buttons.
One of the best advice for people new to tanking (and even more so if you’re new to the game) would be NOT to start your journey on a dh tank as if you fuck up you turn to ashes in a few seconds. Also, tanking is not as hard as you think, fearing it will be what makes it harder. Start with normal mode dungeons, pull little packs of mobs, go slow, take it easy, you will get used to it and will eventually limit test by pulling way too many mobs and still survive like a boss. So don’t fear it, you’ll see that it is very rewarding when you’ll know your spec :) have fun !
Go at a pace you are comfortable with as a tank? Do you want the DPS to lose their minds and run ahead overpulling because you are being too slow? Everyone knows that tanks aren't actually real people. They are NPCs whose only purpose is to pull the whole dungeon so you can do fat deeps.
Best advice for people new to tanking: _don't!_ Second best: if you must tank, _disable the chat!_ I wish someone had been there to tell me this years ago.
I'm a long time Havoc main who learned Vengeance DH this expansion and I'm having a lot of fun tanking. I feel more useful to my guild with the ability to flex roles and the faster queues are nice too.
I like playing vdh too, but compared to other Tanks its just not as durable. Alot of Tanks can swap chars in a week since you can gear up Quick and do higher content with low item level, and thats what pretty much most of the vdhs did. If you look the top rio dhs they mostly do +10s now for weekly

Prot Pally has been my favourite tank for some time now, definitely very easy to play and has some good survivability . (Throw shield and cast cds ) I’ve been considering a second tank and I think you’ve convinced me to play blood dk, it looks fun!
I also recommend Pala instead of BDK for beginners. It forgives more errors than BDK and is great for PUGs (let alone the option to be the king of interrupts and heal others in the group).
bdk is fun but its stressful af. Managing runic power and death strikes and watching you health bar go from 100% to 10% to 100% over and over again is crazy. If you like that, you will enjoy it
I play Prot Pally because I don't trust my PUG to use CC or interrupts. I can also help the healer out with self-healing and the odd clutch heal thrown onto a DPS that won't get out of the stupid.
Tip for War from Quazii: Have shield block and ignore pain on mousewheel up/down. They are off GCD so you can spam it while pressing buttons. It's amazing to deal with button smash.

Blood DK imo is the most fun tank to learn and master. Mechanically complex but on the surface is a quite simple if you take time to learn how the spec functions. A skilled Blood player will often feel immortal once the plates are spinning. Playing Blood is a mini-game in itself of micromanaging cooldowns, buffs and resources. With a minimal amount of external damage reduction from healer, they will never need to heal you. With the 4-set bonus, bone shield regen is passive. Do yourself a favor and avoid class discords for tanks. They will mislead you into thinking that simming for damage talents and trinkets is important in mythic+ (it’s not). These guys often spend more time with theory than actual practice.
9 yo me fell in love with blood DK back when DK’s were basically dps/tanks on all three specs in WoTLK and then cata came around and had me thinking, « this spec is the funniest sh*t ever invented by blizzard ». As you said it is easy to pick up but just how obnoxiously good the class is when mastered has imo never been matched by any spec in the game. You’re virtually unkillable, amazing in PVE, same in PVP, the utility you bring with cc and allowing heals to slack off a bit is also fantastic in raid. Love what they did with the talent trees as well. All things considered one of the most fun and consistent classes throughout the years 💪🏽
I played Warcraft in 2004 and quit. I just started again with my 9yo and 7yo and chose Blood DK so that we could romp around without a healer. So happy I went with this class.
This list is great for new players! After a few dungeons probably the best thing to do would be learning when to use defensive and how to track them to avoid overlap 😊
Im new to tank recently reroll from dps. im playing bear is fun and easy, and now i want to try warrior since tanking with Big Shield looks awesome. Cheers great content as always
Prot Pala is just a blast; i have 10,4 Million hp, 5 cooldowns and 6mill dps on big packs, insane amount of Interrupts and so much utility. 11 Keys are a breeze, 12 are hard
I am not a very good player but I really enjoy tanking. I tried all of them and by far the one that gave me the least amount of anxiety and best time was Guardian Druid. Fewest buttons, most simple rotation.
Guardian Druid. Easiest tank by far. Spam thrash and iron fur and occasionally frenzied regen if healer sucks or you take spike dmg. There ya go thats the TLDR; prot warrior is no super easy. Been playing for 20 years with five more in other mmorpgs before wow. When to use spell block, other abilities and planning ahead are things you need to do as a prot warrior. Meanwhile bear is almost like sleepwalking through content. Pally is good early on and when you are well geared but in the early end game it can be a bit squishy because they don’t have all the block mechanics of a warrior or the higher hp of a bear. Brew is good but more complicated with stagger mechanic. I have literally died because I could not clear my stagger because I got stunned at the wrong time. DH isn’t hard but needs a little more planning. More movement involved.
@ I think you mean DK. With my DH all I do is jump in. The one ability pulls in the surrounding souls healing him. I think one or two major CD’s like most classes when things get really rough.
I agree that warrior has very intuitive spells, but playing prot on a high level can be very punishing. You absolutely have to have shield block up for 100%. The way the rage of a warrior works makes it very easy to get baited into spending too much rage, tho, and as a result having none for shield block. Managing your rage is the true difficulty of prot. It's very different to bear, where you can just infinitelly spam your generators, use iron fur off the global CD and whenever your rage bar fills a bit too much, you just press a spender. You'll never struggle to generate or overcap rage as a bear. What makes it even more punishing is, that warriors have great passive mitigation, but compared to other tanks little tools to be independend. Which means when shit goes south, it goes south.
I really loved the content here, but I wish you would have added another few minutes to briefly discuss the other tanking options, their pros/cons and things you would have to consider if you wanted to go that route.
I’ve been tanking pugs for years, I loved it and still do. I’m skipping this season. The affixes are not pug friendly. The dungeons are not pug friendly. Pugs are not friendly. I’m enjoying delves 😅 where it’s just me, myself and my own. I hope next season would be better.
I can imagine 2/3 of those are going to be better unfortunately, the community issue is not something Bliz can fix with a single patch. that is 20 years of damage they need to undo on that one and Pugs not being friendly is primarily a community issue
@@The0nlyy yeah… the affixes in TBC were easier than these. Still the problem remains. What? You never had a mage dying twice and people complaining about 30 seconds away from the counter, starting to insult each other and leave? Do you think that 15s penalty is good for pugs, people you don’t know and don’t care?
I wanted a change of pace from Frost DK so I rerolled onto Blood, as I'm also quite new to tanking it's good to rely on Death Strike to heal the damage taken. As I'm not doing the high mechanical end game content I don't seem to regret the change from Frost to Blood. DK is a great class fantasy ;)
Prot warriors are powerful if played correctly. Not activating their mitigation can be punishing because of their limited self healing abilities. Druid is probably the most new player friendly tank
Hello there! How about we have another fun tier list? I've recently leveled up a Feral and a Havoc, but I didn't find them particularly enjoyable. In my opinion, their gameplay feels a bit clunky and unsmooth. It would be great to hear your thoughts again on which classes are the most fun to play at the moment. I always enjoy getting your perspective on these things! Looking forward to your response! Best regards
Ive tanking in MMOs for years and I thought i didn't need this guide but tanking in Wow feels so different from tanking in SWTOR or FF14. Theres so much crap you have to pay attention to even in regular dungeons and aggro in this game is kind of a pain in the ass to maintain, that being said I think the difficulty makes kt more engaging at times and ive been having a blast on Prot Warrior.
I like arcane bear because you don't need to spend fury on ravage, so you can just ooga booga ironfur spam, like so: #showtooltip /cast thrash /cast ironfur #showtooltip /cast mangle /cast ironfur #showtooltip /cast swipe /cast ironfur
I'd like to make a point here, prot war is "easy" at a low level of tanking ability, but difficult to master as you have many many tools for many different situations and your fingers will fall off if you are actually playing it at an expert level.
To me Tanking is more of a knowledge check of the dungeon/Raid your running more than the class your playing, because in the end most classes have CD's equivellant to others. Sure others may be easier to pick up which i dont necesarily think is prot warrior but we all gotta start somewhere.
I played Prot Warrrior in BFA it was fun until the spec was nerfed to the grouond, never again. Besides some of us don't know the mechanics or the dungeons in general taking longer to finish each run.
lol i have problems to tank as Death knight... idk if i am suck at rota or something else, my dps is not as much as other tanks with 614 ilvl... 400k dps, others have 700k round about
I love to tank but not in rnd grp. In every grp you will find a dps who pulls and pulls because he has a proc or youre to lame. Also dont look at healers mana and then the fun for me is over -.- I tank for my friends and have fun
Wait wait, does wow have any evolving armor? I saw that intro and I’ve never wanted anything more 😂 big fan of gw2 legendary armor changing when in combat
It’s not difficult to keep spikes and immo aura up, when you’re going into demon form every 30 seconds. I’d rather have more self healing like last season over more DR.
You know. I don't really think prot warrior is the easiest. I think that's an old idea that doesn't really apply in all areas. Prot warrior at the START is easy. Nothing can kill you, you charge in put up shield block and you'll be ok. High level tho? You need to really use DEMO shout, avatar, and manage ignore pain very well along with shield block or you'll flop. And on top of that needing to make sure enemies are in front, along with the lack of mobility outside of charge you're quite slow. And heroic leep has a criminally high CD with one charge. it's also very spammy, one of the highest APMs. ALso you have no way to really bring in casters. Which makes getting aggro pretty tough . What's more you can't really heal yourself. And this limits your ability to manage yourself outside of healers. Honestly? I think vengeance demon hunter is easier. Hot take? well here is why. You have allot of mobility, and allot of power Over bringing enemies together, and youc an get out of dodge very quickly. You can also do allot of healing, you also have a oh shit button (meta) where you're a god. While there might be a slight curve to learn what you're doing, I think most learn that VERY quickly as they do a few dungeons and then it becomes quite easy. Where as prot warrior starts out easiest to understand but actually becomes much more difficult in the long run. That's my op.
blood death knight tank is s tier! by far! healers can ignore me entirley and i can solo raid content or tier 9 delves! druids are squishy as fuck even with gear. i can still get one shotted, also healers have the fastest ques!
People are really mlg at complaining back in the day we where happy to just have a healer we never complained unless they where over the top bad ofc but we helped the healer to heal by not pulling the whole instance and communication was key that was the same for tanks aswell ofc but now no one talks unless they complain and they kick tanks and healers just becuse of one wipe its expectations is over the top and people need to get over themself's really if they are so pro at it they should roll a tank or healer but they dont becuse they are to scared to be critiquet lol
W....why is there no prot pally on this list? Just a heads up to anyone looking at this list. Prot pally is currently the best tank in the game. You get the tankiness of warrior with the damage of a dps. I say this as someone who mains a prot warrior and has an alt that's a prot pally.
They were a bit late on the update. Until the LightSmith Hero Buffs Prot Paladin was getting death by a 1000 cuts little nerfs here and there that added up. Also to be fair in terms of easy... Prot Paladin is not quite as easy as the ones in the video.
If you check the hardest keys, those are the best _players._ Kids just don't get that difference, and I can't blame them: the Devs don't get that either, they look at the hardest keys, and mess up the entire game for the rest of us.
Tanked last 2 df seasons and played to 3k, honestly i’d rather sit on a electric chair than listen any dps whine who are oblivious what’s happening around them lol. My tip to new people is to stay away from m+ high keys, since no matter what happens, it’s the tanks fault🤷🏼♂️
Tanking is way easier now than it used to be. I'd say bear is the best starter tank because it really is so simple. Personally my favorite is Brewmaster, it's actually a lot easier than people make it out to be.
@@The0nlyy every pull you should be able to lead with dancing rune weapon and vampiric blood. Then you blood boil and roll from there with your rotation. If you are rolling tombstone and bone storm during pulls dancing rune weapon should be up for most packs. Also make sure you use ams as much as you need to to mitigate casters. On really dangerous pulls also weave icebound fortitude and lichborne. The biggest thing to remember is always have bone shield up as you approach a pack and a defensive. You are insanely squishy until you start going. Also upgrade your gear using runed crests. Higher ilvl means more health and armor.
Don't fall for this. They want you to try tanking just so that, when you fail, they get to abuse you and to blame you for their own shortcomings. Particularly now, that the job is even more shitty than it used to be. There's a reason everybody armchair-tanks and nobody actually tanks: it's a thankless job, full of frustration and pain.
You should do a deep dive into BrewMaster and its current flaws. Maybe Blizzard will listen to you and buff it up to at least decent.
Monk hands down is the funnest but so needs a tuning pass
Switched to pala tank out of desperation and pushed to 3.1k rio within one week... Its easy to get into keys now but I hate tanking 😂
I like arcane bear because you don't need to spend fury on ravage, so you can just ooga booga ironfur spam, like so:
#showtooltip
/cast thrash
/cast ironfur
#showtooltip
/cast mangle
/cast ironfur
#showtooltip
/cast swipe
/cast ironfur
Im surprised pally isn't on the list
I'd like to make a point here, prot war is "easy" at a low level of tanking ability, but difficult to master as you have many many tools for many different situations and your fingers will fall off if you are actually playing it at an expert level.
To me Tanking is more of a knowledge check of the dungeon/Raid your running more than the class your playing, because in the end most classes have CD's equivellant to others. Sure others may be easier to pick up which i dont necesarily think is prot warrior but we all gotta start somewhere.
The only difficult part of being a tank is dealing with the entitled and/or idiot players (mostly dps) who will blame you for their mistakes
I'm not afraid to leave group if they acting dumb. I don't need that
I played Prot Warrrior in BFA it was fun until the spec was nerfed to the grouond, never again. Besides some of us don't know the mechanics or the dungeons in general taking longer to finish each run.
The yoyo of the dk healthbar is crazy😂😂😂😂
the best is prot pally, you are the tank healer and dps all at the same time
Tanks for that :)
lol i have problems to tank as Death knight... idk if i am suck at rota or something else, my dps is not as much as other tanks with 614 ilvl... 400k dps, others have 700k round about
Yes, pull big in timewalking dungeons, no one does them for fun. We do them for the gear so lets hurry that up okay? I say this as a tank main
Biggest pain and that as a veteran are routes or wich pack to pull as a tank
I have mained a prot tank at beginnig but shall I try prot pala? I always loved paladins.
Been tanking since BC but this season has me being a solo quester as Dps
It is warrior.
Have a nice day
I love to tank but not in rnd grp. In every grp you will find a dps who pulls and pulls because he has a proc or youre to lame. Also dont look at healers mana and then the fun for me is over -.- I tank for my friends and have fun
Wait wait, does wow have any evolving armor? I saw that intro and I’ve never wanted anything more 😂 big fan of gw2 legendary armor changing when in combat
the fact that Vengeance DH isn't even on here says a lot
I play all tank specs and I agree with him. VDH and Brew are the hardest to get right.
as a bdk main id say guardian is the easiest tank, just macro ironfur into thrash and mangle lmao
I main brew so BDK can’t be that scary right? Right?…
BLIZZ!!!!! More Love to DH Tank PLS, we need more dmg reduce CD
Just have to kite.
Agreed!
I think ima pick up my Blood DK again but ill keep my ass/resto sham in the loop still
As blood dk I like being an S tier healer
blood death knight tank is s tier! by far! healers can ignore me entirley and i can solo raid content or tier 9 delves! druids are squishy as fuck even with gear. i can still get one shotted, also healers have the fastest ques!
Skill issue
Who is spending hours filling their dungeon? Unless you’re doing a +0 I have never waited more than 10-15 minutes to fill a party lol
Guardian druid was very boring to play. i ditched it for prot pala, waay more fun.
if you check the hardest keys done, best tank is pala atm...........
If you check the hardest keys, those are the best _players._ Kids just don't get that difference, and I can't blame them: the Devs don't get that either, they look at the hardest keys, and mess up the entire game for the rest of us.
i love my Blood DK
*cries in Vengeance.
Barkskin? Laughs in fiery brand
Shaman tank.... earth shield armor. Have it act you take the least amount of damage when your earth armor is full
BASED! Make it happen please!
What it means to take it to the face...in a video game. Outside of that - it's Riley Reid.
Don't do it! Trust me you'll get depressed, I've stopped tanking I don't give a damn . Only braindead DPS 😂
Tanking is way easier now than it used to be. I'd say bear is the best starter tank because it really is so simple. Personally my favorite is Brewmaster, it's actually a lot easier than people make it out to be.
I prefer Pally/DK tanks. I find warrior tanks harder to heal this xpac...or maybe its just shitty warriors.
its a druid you can just spam shit and press ironfur
Why tank when you can play Rogue? Exactly.
I actually enjoy tanking mythic plus and currently enjoy doint it on Vengeance DH and Blood DK.
What key levels? I’m 613 ilvl DK and get squashed on 8s
@The0nlyy I run 8s and 9s. You have to know how to begin each pull. Once you have that it's a breeze
@@pyramus7958 I’m 612 DK and feel insanely squishy (one shot territory) in 7s but I’ll keep grinding I guess!
Choose life.
World of Queue Simulator
Blood dk for beginners is the worst Statement i saw in a while. Brewmaster and blood dk are the most unfriendly beginner tanks with a huge gap
Port Pally seems more squishy than the other tanks.
It's not the tankiest for sure
Couldn't be farther from the truth
Hello!
What's up?
@@MarcelianOnline Great content as always!
rawr
Boink!
get massed reported over nothing and suspended while blizz does nothing about it
:(
They’re not going to change anything about the report system unless there’s enough backlash and money lost.
the community is hot garbage… sad
What does that have to do with this video?
I was one of the ones who reported, you were dumb
Outdated pally nr1
Prot Paladin is the easiest out of them all, everyone go play Prot Paladin and skip this video.
Wait after 20 years wow is still unbalance ? Fotm game
You can't balance the sheer amount of classes in game ....
Dont do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
lol paladin
Stopped watching when you mentioned Patrion. Bye.
Brewmaster is better than dk in every way except healing
