- Wild camping with the DD hammock in a remote forest just north of Alwinton in Northumberland. I found out a little of the history of Whiteburnshank, a remote cottage that sits in the heart of Kidland Forest. A fascinating and eerie place to spend the night. I had a bright idea to use the alpkit cloud cover as a hammock underblanket which was at least partially succesfull.
Nothing except hearing a branch snap in the night and Nicks feeling of being watched while collecting berries spoiled a peaceful night.
Also, I had some beer, which was nice.

my family volunteered and sponsored and kept the place going from about 2003 to 2016ish alongside some amazing volunteers Adrian, Ian and Paul especially, the trust was a collective group of volunteers who kept the place going, private investment charity kept the place going for years we had the inside like a lodge showers new kitchen all done out, then the people who owned it said its not safe due to logging operations chased us out rent it to loggers for 30 seconds and the place got smashed up boarded up and ended the post apocalyptic overgrowth you see now, the whiteburnshank trust now operates another cottage called chartners farm that you can stay in, not the dramatic backdrop that old shank had but still a nice place.
we all miss it alot, and had great fun in winter christmas when the snow was wild climbing the hill opposite and sliding down with the dogs and the kids was great some of the best weekends of my life were up there volunteering, quadding hiking or just messing about with a big fire next to what was a woodshed not a green house, we sunk the container into the hillside and set a wind turbine top of the hill which is no longer there
Thank you, it's great to hear first hand accounts of folk who knew the place. What a shame the owners decided that the volunteer group was no longer necessary and it got trashed. It's a lonely place now but I can imagine what it was like when it was busy and full of life. Many thanks for letting me know just a little more about the place, ATVB, Graham
Just rewatched this, great video and pitch. I’ve passed there literally hundreds of times and I’ve got to say I hate that hill up to it. Me and Bob had lunch round the back of there in thigh deep snow once as it was the only shelter we could find 👍
Thanks, I loved it up there, felt so remote. Must go back sometime. TFW, Graham 👍
Can't believe that place is abandoned!
My old work company (Life Engineering) used to sponsor the place years ago..
Stopped there many a time , I remember it got so dark up there, it was hard to tell if you had your eyes open or not when popping to the toilet during the night.
We did the whole place out, wind turbine at the rear just up the bank.
Solar panels.
Battery shed at the rear behind the barn bit on the side.
Water came from well and was pumped up...
A few scout groups and a naughty boys home used to rent it now and then.
Must be 15years since i was last up there.
Had some great times at the cottage, sad to see it like this....
Great video
Thanks for the info, it’s great hearing about the history of the place from someone with first hand experience. My mate Shaun had some memories of being there as a kid when it was some sort of outdoor centre. Glad you enjoyed the video, ATB, Graham 👍👍
Wezlaaaaaa was outstanding fun miss it alot
The pink plants are called rosebay willowherb.
Thank you 👍
Cool video ,just subbed after coming across your channel via mountain hopper57 ,Epic Landscape up there, love hearing the sounds of nature ,my eldest daughter lives up this ,settled down after uni now (Newcastle), so thinking of coming up yo see her and stealth camp some of these stunning places, I visited Northumberland last year on family holiday and just so beautiful up there, bit different geography wise from the forests of Nottinghamshire/Lincolnshire for sure, looking forward to watching your other videos ,good health and safe travels, cheers craig
Hello, thanks very much. I think we are lucky in that Northumberland is the least densely populated county and we have hills, moors and forests and coast to explore which makes for some great wild camping but there are also really beautiful areas all over the U.K. as well.
Thanks for your sub, appreciated- Im going to have a look at your channel, ATVB, Graham 👍
Hi graham, nice hammock camp, like the stir fry, watching this while camped on a hill at st Abbs, my trail cam failed last night, I had it out for the hedgehog’s on the front garden,
Cheers Adrian
Keep em coming
Thanks Adrian, hope you’re having a good camp. Is Jed out with you? 👍
Brilliant stories, Graham! Poor cows. I think the tall plant is rosebay willowherb. It has a sweet, cloying smell in flower. Spreads like wildfire. PS. I looked up the alpkit cloud cover and it's on sale at the moment! In case any watchers are interested.
Thanks Kirsty, good to know, I’ll remember that for future. The Alpkit cloud cover is a nice bit of kit: you should nab one! 👍
I'll never eat oxtail soup again that's for sure 😬😁 class video Graham mate, good banter and your stir fry looked really nice 😋 All the best Chris 👍
Ah, thanks very much mate !
Fantastic mate, great set up. 👍
Cheers mate, was canny 👍
Another excellent video mate. Looked a very comfortable setup.
Cheers, hammocks seem to be much more comfortable than ground sleeping. Not giving up my tents though! 👍
Nice one Graham 👍
Thanks very much, good little place, that one 👍
Thats a stunning looking spot you've got there mate. The timelapse looked brilliant by the way. Glad you didn't get eaten anyway.
Thank you 👍 We didn’t get eaten but I tell you what, if I’d been camping alone when that branch snapped in the dark, I would’ve hoofed it back to Alwinton 😂 ATB, Graham
Nice video Graham 👍
Thank you very much ! 👍👍
Belta mate. Purple plants are Rosebay Willow Herb, makes a nice tea and you can eat the young shoots like asparagus 👍
Ah, thanks, was hoping someone would know what they were, cheers mate 👍
Cracking video pal.. what a lovely place 👌was out at harwood over the weekend for a two day solo and couldn't believe there was no midges.. must have moved over to you 😁all the best Lincoln 🤙👍
No midges at Harwood? Nice, sounds like it’s time to go back and explore. Haven’t really been since storm Arwen. TFW, ATB, Graham 👍👍
Nice one Graham , well hidden away in the trees . A pretty gruesome end for the cows, looks a great little cottage but a bit out my financial reach lol atb Dave
Bit out my price range too! BTW, been checking out your channel- very canny, not sure why I haven’t subbed before now, ATB, Graham
Nice little spot there matey. Showing us some interesting places again.
BTW have you seen the latest promo video from Visit Northumberland called 'Love it like it's yours 2022' with a subtle hint at discouraging wild camping? 🥴
No, haven’t seen that, I’ll check it out. Ah well, think it might take a bit more to discourage me. I tend to think those kinds of things aren’t aimed at sensible LNT campers- hope so anyway. Thanks for watching- appreciate it, ATB, Graham
@@grahamswildcamping I was thinking on the same lines. Aimed at fly-campers.
@@wvo2m let’s hope so 👍
Another great trip Graham.... so envious! Surprised you found blackcurrants though..... not blackberries or wild blueberries? Didn't think they grew in the wild? The cottage would make a nice bothy! My son recently went bothying, he went ahead of his friend who was supposed to follow on, but even though it was a simple path to follow, his friend some how missed the bothy all together! There was no phone signal either. Luckily he had a tent, and joined him in the morning. It's strange how some places have an unexplained spooky feeling about them..... that's happened to me several times..... its like something from the past is still there!
Thank you. Nick said they were blackcurrants and I just trusted him tbh, he usually knows his stuff- I’ll ask him again!
Yep would make a great little bothy.
Some places do seem to carry a little bit of the past with them, don’t they?
TFW 👍👍
Last September we had a holiday in Herefordshire, and one evening my husband wanted to visit a disused railway station, it was in a very remote woodland. We were enjoying the evening and the countryside, driving up a lonely lane, when for no reason I started to feel very uneasy.... seriously freaked out.... my husband looked at me and said he felt the same! Have no idea why we should have felt that, but we turned the car around and got out of there fast!
@@louisesouthgate5231 wise decision I bet! Instinct is older than reason- trust your gut feeling!
They were blackcurrants, Nick found them in an old walled garden
@@grahamswildcamping ah, thanks Graham, that makes sense! 👍
