Spithope bothy was our refuge being put off wild camping on the border ridge by weather and cows

  • We intended to wild camp on the border ridge in the Cheviots between Northumberland and Scotland but the weather, darkness and a herd of cows put us off. Despite boggy ground, difficult navigating and a couple of mishaps, Spithope Bothy proved our saviour that night. One of Northumberlands best bothies. No need to get the hilleberg akto wet was a bonus: it came in handy as a very expensive pillow though. Mint night!

    I like the bothys,I wouldn't want to leave it! Belly pork,all the flavours are in the fat,the most flavoursome pig dinner! Yum, a bed time whisky or brandy, either a hot toddy or in a hot chocolate with a little honey. I couldn't catch all the words you say, I'm in the west country, the best part of England.

      Yeah, I love a good bothy and we’re quite fortunate in Northumberland to have a few. It’s interesting what you say about not catching words, I usually have quite a strong accent but I’ve been trying to talk a bit ‘posher’ on the vids so I’m understood 😂 All the best mate, and thanks for watching 👍

    Stayed in that bothy about 4 times now,first time it was still in the trees, last time it was getting very busy,me and me son got in there just as a family of 3 leaving and two groups turned up shortly after

      I've only started going fairly recently (maybe 5 years ago) so I've only ever seen it surrounded by trees in pictures- it seems to give a totally different aspect to it. I tend to go mid-week in autumn / winter for the best chance of missing other folk. ATB- and thanks for watching 👍

    I've never liked the idea of camping in a bothy because of sharing with strangers, although a stranger is just a friend you haven't got to know yet. I was impressed with the performance of that torch, it just goes to show how remote and deserted the place is for your torch to still be there the next day. Just a few hundred years ago and it would have been a very populated place with the medieval village and Roman occupation before that.

      I agree there is always a risk when heading to a bothy because you never know if it's full or if you're going to get on with folks there but to be fair, so far I've only met like minded folks. I think I prefer camping though and even at a bothy I'd usually camp outside if possible. Interesting area of the Cheviots though, I'd love to see how it was in the past. Thanks for watching 👍👍

      The route from the south, parking at Byrness will be clear. So should the route from the North, if you park at Chew Green, but to be honest the walk and the navigation is much easier if you park at Byrness. Hope you have a good night there, and cheers, ATB, Graham

    What night was this with the wind,
    Do you like setting off in the dark With no views or was it last minute after work,
    I must visit that one as never been there, socks are a great idea as it’s so boggy up here.
    It was nice to see a well looked after bothy with books as well how nice and welcoming.

    • @grahamswildcamping
      @grahamswildcamping  2 роки тому

      I hate setting off in the dark, but Shaun was at work that day 😂 it makes filming and navigation difficult. It was just last night, one of the Cheviot forecasts was for 75 kph at the summit so I reckoned the wind would be bad at most of the peaks. I took a chance but the wind was quite heavy even at Chew Green carpark. It’s a lovely bothy and I love the book idea but I always take a tent as it’s a small place. Thanks for watching 👍

      @@grahamswildcamping yes it was windy last night I looked out and the trees were moving well, I hope to catch some wind to test the winter tent I just picked up.

    Encephalitis of the brain it can cause instant death if your lucky coma for three weeks upwards and possible full recovery or permanent life changing issues, good job it’s cold there, and the rice you ate was not the already cooked packet type , like you said rice can be dodgy, in fact rice is the worst food poisoning you can get, I don’t know why you were so desperate that you ate rice that was out of date three years ago, but in the future let us know when your going and I’m sure that there would be people willing to buy you some rice before you go.
