Very rarely does this tool work for me. I work on a lot of older plumbing and these usually slip because the tub shoe is so tight. I just use a Dremel with the small cutting disk, cut around the shoe right underneath where the lip meets the tub. Works every time.
I have had such bad luck with using tools like this for removing drains, I usually make some cuts with a recip saw then chisel it out the rest of the way.
That's the way I was taught when I was doing my apprenticeship as a plumber. Imq Lic Jrnymn plumber, that's specialty tools rarely work , some luck if you find that tool that does work over the 80% of the specialty tools never work in real.life applications , and that cool tool.that may or may not work, is probably $60. no bs.
@david shaw Same for me. Sometimes I use a bad wood chisel. Start a line in the metal, then carefully hammer the chisel to start knocking the metal counter clockwise until loose. Of course you have to be careful not to slip and hit the tub
Tubs don't have a p-trap under them. The have a waste and overflow assembly that's made of cheap thin wall plastic and can easily be stripped out. Yes, you can get it out with other items but for $3 you can buy a tool to easily and safely remove it. I agree with the premise of this video. Before anyone says anything I am a plumber, I've built hospitals, multiple apartment complexes and did many custom homes.
@@jacobchristian8608 ok let me clarify. Yes they have a trap but it is not located under the tub stopper like a sink does. You trap them either underground/ under the floor. What the video is saying is its attached there. Let's use common sense here.if it's trapped under the tub ot wouldn't be to code either...
@@jamiecurtis2974 I wasn't being a dick. I thought you were stating there was no p trap on a tub. My apologies. I own a renovation company and I'm also a certified inspector. Sorry I took your terminology literal.
This tool is good for like 1 job. If you're a plumber you need the n one that connects to your ratchet and has a swing arm that grips. That way, the more force you need to break it free, the more the arm bites into the drain and gets grip
I want this tool because it looks similar to cartridge puller or similar mechanism that makes it easier no take it out. I would really appreciate it if you know where I can find this tool online

Hey so my bathtub has a hole rusted thru it and mold in the wall. My landlord just had the repair guy throw some bondo over the hole and call it a day, is this the correct way of doing that repair? (I mean I know well it's not, the hole is already back open and only getting bigger. Plus a second opening came up. My landlord only refuses to rip out and replace the tub because he knows he is gonna find black mold, and thus be held reliable.)
Smash the tub with a sledge if its steel. Cut it with a sawzall. Why take it apart all careful if u redoing it anyways? I am the guy in the comments.... Listen to meeee!!
As a plumber I can tell you that it’s never this easy to remove a tub drain. This particular tub drain I believe was already loosened before this video to make it appear as something that is easy to do. Don’t be fooled!

Use C4 to demo the tub. This way the tub can't plan an insurrection against the basin later . This is an important step.
Amen to that.
Finally somebody who ACTUALLY knows what they are talking about
Now that's some good advice
Nice! I was a service plumber for 23 years and have never seen this tool.
What is this tool called and where can you get it
Generally you replace the trap because the shoe on the waste and overflow usually doesn’t line up
Honestly haven't worked on runs or showers. Didn't know they had P traps as well.

Heat the drain first with heat gun
I hit 1 once with the sledge and it's out hahahahaha
Sawzall 2 notches and stick a flat bar across the notches . Acts like a big flat head screwdriver . Then a wrench to turn the flat bar .
Most of these videos never say what's the tool.
My trap remover comes with an extractor that looks like a broken bolt extractor but a lot bigger.

Why are we taking it out at all if it's getting trashed?
Cut the drain out with a grinder then push it inward out the hole of the tub then remove tub then cut your drain to size ez no extra tools
