I ran into him in a bar in Gatlinburg, TN. In 1989 I think. He and another fella was sitting at the bar, I sat down beside his buddy without noticing George. They were drinking whiskey, I noticed, and asked for the same. His buddy said “ Good choice brother” and I said “thanks, next round is on me”, That’s when George leaned in to the conversation and said to me, “ that’s really nice of you man, but not necessary”. That’s when I noticed who he was. I asked him if he was George Thorogood, he said “sometimes I am”. We laughed, and talked for about 45 mins. I ended up buying one round anyway, and George returned the favor. Super nice, and approachable guy, just an average Joe. I also play guitar, we talked about music, the blues mostly. Years later, I won a guitar on a radio station signed by him. I still have it. Small world.
George is a guitarist I have admired for a long, long time... I saw one of his shows in Milwaukee several years ago, and marveled at just how GOOD he sounded! It also didn’t hurt that he played one of my favorite songs, “I Drink Alone.” Not too shabby, I’d have to say. Keep on pickin,’ George!
This is incredible. I will never come close to touching this guys skills, but its really cool to know he likes the same style and players I admire. What a cool cat.
What a legend.I never play with a pick,it dosent feel natural cause i cant play with it.Im playing on acustic guitars too and i juse my tumb as a pick sometimes and fingerpicking feels natural for me.
HOLY CRAP! I remember when Guitar Hero came out I was like 'this is nice, but I wish we could use it to really teach guitar, not just push buttons" I can't even begin to express how effing happy I am about this!
That first bar of that first song on that first record "You Got To Lose". 1977. I was sold on lonesome George in the first 5 seconds. 36 years later still love him.
3:07 Elizabeth Cotton. If you've never heard her play " Washington Blues " give it a listen/ watch here on UA-cam. She finger picks like nobodies business. She lays down the beat, bass line, lead, and rolls it all into one. Just amazing.
Underrated guitar player? Yup. Understated musician? Uh huh. Under-acknowledged throughout the blues idiom? Sadly enough. Under-credited in the pages of most guitar publications? No question. ...why? How could any fan of guitar NOT have the urge to cop an open G tuning, grab a glass tube (or an 18mm socket like I do) and channel that buh-buh-buh-buh-BAAAD Thoroughgood vibe!? Here's to Lonesome George...a real guitar hero! Cheers.
George has it right, most everything about blues guitar playing stops at Robert Johnson.

+tp10488 no it doesn't. johnson didn't influence old blues, he was a son, not a father, if you get my drift. go see son house, charley patton, blind arthur blake(no vids of him, just listen) and mississippi john hurt and blind willie johnson. and others who played in the 20's. johnson influenced rock more than he did blues. he turned out to be one of the greater ones as we look back today, he really honed his stuff as ike zinnerman told him to do. but if you stop there, you're missing out on a great deal of stuff
I'd like to know how he controls feedback and noise on those P-90 pickups. Gotta love those P-90s pickups. Beautiful and chimey one beat and down and nasty growl the next beat..
normally, the kids these days think that a lesson is something that they see couple of hundreds notes in a minute.. I tell you what folks : yess this is a lesson.. because music is not something you can mathematise.. it derives from your emotions and thoughts.. listen to him, and listen to him good..
@Jeanytherocker i met him at a bowling alley in los angeles during the 80s. I told him i thought he was an amazing guitarist. His response was "wow, no one has ever said that to me before"....No sarcasm, he was serious!
This video is titled "George Thorogood Guitar Lesson". Very little guitar playing in this lesson,, just an observation. Although, when I drink alone,, I prefer to be by myself! Paul Gilbert gives very good guitar lessons. I know from experience, dude. Well, not me personally,, this guy I know.. (see what I did there) I miss the 90s so much.
i hope other G.T fans won't be offended by what i say. notice how he talks about what he can't do.i can't play this or that."i couldn't play a strat" i can't use a pick etc...its an important lesson not only in music but in life...u gotta do what your good at.we all no well rounded players who play many styles great but would u pay to see them? being able to sing and rock like this guy takes a lot of talent. im glad he didn't go off some were and take flamenco lessons.
Yep--I'm learning blues/rock stuff now, and I consider listening to George here helpful. Expecting that the only kind of blues/rock guitar lesson can be one where you learn which finger to put where seems robotic to me. Listening and studying helps playing in the long run.
So hard to believe that a fab player like him cannot use a regular pick ... but hey .. he says it .. just baffles me though. Meanwhile, as I poke around over the years .. I find that so many of the top guitarists do not use picks ... one notable is Mark Knopfler ..another is Jeff Beck .... but it would be a long list if you tried to make one.
Definitely an intelligent AND talented individual - if you consider yourself to be a serious rock guitarist, listen to the entire segment here...it just might improve AND change your attitude about playing.
Judith Gould Cool! Yes, they are awesome dogs! I had to put my big precious Hank down in August last year broke my heart. He's the pooch in my avatar. We have 3 rescues still an Aussie, a Border Collie and a Catahoula Leopard Dog.

+HerdingDogRescuer go find videos of as many old blues players as you can. the thumb is the most important digit on the hand for doing what george does and for all of that stuff that influenced him. there's good teachers as well. stephan grossman is one. that should lead you to many others.
jean-pierre mercier Thanks. I've been a big George fan for years and tried slide with and without thumb picks for years. I can do a little, but I just never took to it. I'm more of an SRV type player.
DAMN usually people such as myself struggle with finger picking but good at pick playing. Robert Johnson got his talent by selling his soul to the devil.. \..../\m/

That was thoroughly good.
A lesson in rock ALWAYS starts with the history of the blues....
Saw him in NJ last nite. He rocked the house as always. This guy is an awesome guitar player & entertainer. Amazing energy.
Keep on pickin,’ George!
i never thought myself a thorogood fan but i blast his songs in the car when they hit the radio. 107.7 the bone!
This is incredible. I will never come close to touching this guys skills, but its really cool to know he likes the same style and players I admire. What a cool cat.
wish george would tour with the black keys...now that would be a fun show worth watching
He is a rock legend. He should be in thr rock n roll hall of fame.
To those of you who say that " this is no lesson" keep in mind your listening to yoda speak. You must first listen before you speak-
You are so right! Well said.
If you like sermons go to church!
If you like being tricked go to guitar world!
If you like clickbait, find excuses!
What a quality musician. It's all gold when he touches the fretboard.
What a legend.I never play with a pick,it dosent feel natural cause i cant play with it.Im playing on acustic guitars too and i juse my tumb as a pick sometimes and fingerpicking feels natural for me.
HOLY CRAP! I remember when Guitar Hero came out I was like 'this is nice, but I wish we could use it to really teach guitar, not just push buttons"
I can't even begin to express how effing happy I am about this!
I can't imagine George Thorogood imitating John Hammond! They're both at the top of their game they just keep getting better with age.
man this guy is so freaking cool even his voice rocks!
The message of George's little talk here is (to quote John Prine), "You are what you are and you ain't what you ain't."
Glad he didn't say you is what you is.
"Well, you know who you are? You are what you is!" -- Frank Vincent Zappa (1940-1993)
Thanks George, you’ve been a big influence on my guitar playing 🎸
That first bar of that first song on that first record "You Got To Lose". 1977. I was sold on lonesome George in the first 5 seconds. 36 years later still love him.

One of my ALL-TIME favorites, and an absolute magician. :o)
Underrated guitar player? Yup.
Understated musician? Uh huh.
Under-acknowledged throughout the blues idiom? Sadly enough.
Under-credited in the pages of most guitar publications? No question.

OMG! as soon as i started watching this bad to the bone came on my tv!
My favourite guitar player hands down.😘
Respect for that Canned Heat shout out...
Alan WIlson aka "The Owl" - love his playing on Refried Hockey Boogie
Thorogood, he's allways been great!
AMAZING guitarist :) One of my favorite. Love watching his finger picking
Amazing player
Saw him twice in CA. Great entertainer.
saw him live Dunedin town hall here in new zealand back in
early 1980s. Amazing hes still going in a world of lady gagas
I saw him Wellington-same tour. Great guy.
you say DUNEDIN NZ a lot of good bands come from there
Love the way this guy credits John Hammond, he seems to have become the forgotten man of great blues guitar.
Saw him in concert a few days ago. He was incredible.
this is a lesson in what a real man is.
Love the 125. The 135 Gibson had out in the 90's was nearly identical looks-wise. with they were still making one or the other.
would be really good marketing to have a link to the lesson in the vid...
It may not be.But I found it interesting to hear what he had to say.

it`s only a preview of the lesson that you get with the dvd
I'd like to know how he controls feedback and noise on those P-90 pickups. Gotta love those P-90s pickups. Beautiful and chimey one beat and down and nasty growl the next beat..
To those of you who are wondering where the lesson is, you're not getting it. The first three seconds of this video tells you all you'll need to know.
Way to provide a link, guitarworld.com.
Nobody is better or worse for using or not using a pick, its just what is comfortable for you.
Legend.
great news. i am seeing him in kingston, ny late march for the 1st time
So ?
I saw him live in 1983 and he played a lot of the show with a bud bottle😄
And he was drunk as fuck.
Awesome show🤘🏻
Bad to the bone....just love that.
Where is the rest of this interview
G.T always had great feel.great live to

normally, the kids these days think that a lesson is something that they see couple of hundreds notes in a minute.. I can’t use a pick either ! Makes me feel a lot better 😄
i saw the destroyers live all i have to say is WOW
As well as being an amazing guitar player, Elizabeth Cotton remarkably played the guitar upside down
Brownie McGhee grew up bout 5 miles from me!
Went to school w McGhees/McGees/McGues
Is That Guitar Gibson ES-175 Or ES-125 Or what And What Efects George Use i wanna get that blues rock sound its awesome!

@Jeanytherocker i met him at a bowling alley in los angeles during the 80s. I told him i thought he was an amazing guitarist. His response was "wow, no one has ever said that to me before"....No sarcasm, he was serious!

Does anyone know what es125 guitar that is? A es125ec? or tc or tcd?or What? Thanks for your help !
@goerge4 It's an ES-125 TDC. Very special model . . .
Hes smart because he basically studied the roots of rock and roll..😎👍
YES THIS IS A LESSON
Just because hes no showing a lick doesnt mean its not a lesson
@TheFith , Rock on!!!!
It's about time. George has been needing one for years..... JK.

To all the would be guitarists that I can see are posting..there's more to guitar then "shredding".

i hope other G.T fans won't be offended by what i say. notice how he talks about what he can't do.i can't play this or that."i couldn't play a strat" i can't use a pick etc...its an important lesson not only in music but in life...u gotta do what your good at.we all no well rounded players who play many styles great but would u pay to see them? being able to sing and rock like this guy takes a lot of talent. im glad he didn't go off some were and take flamenco lessons.
Go listen to, and study on these people he is talking about. Dumbasses. There is your lesson.
Yes! That's inspiration and motivation. The biggest lesson of all that really can't be tought as a lesson.
+San Luiseno OTC you are obviously the biggest dumbass of all
+Andykog : - )
Yep--I'm learning blues/rock stuff now, and I consider listening to George here helpful. Expecting that the only kind of blues/rock guitar lesson can be one where you learn which finger to put where seems robotic to me. Listening and studying helps playing in the long run.
FUCK YEAH!!!
Man. Those Glasses make George look like Burt Reynolds !!!!
No lesson here other than his personal history of discovering blues, which is interesting but not at all what I was seeking.
he should have a gibson signature series
So hard to believe that a fab player like him cannot use a regular pick ... but hey .. he says it .. just baffles me though. Meanwhile, as I poke around over the years .. goes way up that ole blues tree just like ole keith richards and that ralph machio's crossroads character
mmm, show nuff
THIS IS THOROBAD
so who originated the flat-pickin' style ???
"Lesson" is a bit of a leap. "Influences" would be more accurate.
Thats 20 seconds I'd like to get back
More of lesson of George talking about himself
Mick Jagger playing Bad to the Bone!
Not much of a "guitar lesson".
+HerdingDogRescuer Aussies? Had them since rescuing one in 85, love thme
Judith Gould Cool! Yes, they are awesome dogs! I had to put my big precious Hank down in August last year broke my heart. He's the pooch in my avatar. We have 3 rescues still an Aussie, a Border Collie and a Catahoula Leopard Dog.
