- Fleetwood Mac's legendary guitarist Lindsey Buckingham gives an exclusive lesson for Guitar World. In Part 1, Lindsey talks about his Picking Style, and demonstrates how to play the classic hit "Landslide."
One of the most underrated guitarists of our time. Not fancy, but his riffs are iconic and poweful. I personally salute you Mr. Buckingham.
He number 100 on Rolling Stones, he’s guitar players of all time
That’s why I’m here!
Not fancy you say, but I don’t know to many people who can cover his songs correctly.
@@texasviking1 Good point. He has a very distinct style.
@@texasviking1 Indeed. Try playing Stephanie or Long Distance Winner from the Buckingham Nicks album. Crisp picking with impeccable timing.
One of my favorite guitarists of all time!
I have always loved his finger picking style. He down plays his genius which shows you how genuine this man is. God Bless you Mr. Buckingham! Loving your music since the 1970’s.
Seems like a very lovely man.
The very definition of the word musician...
Saw F M live in Birmingham, he started the show saying "we are here with no new album to plug, we just wanna play live and hope you enjoy it as much as we do".
The gig was superb, but Lindsey's playing was bordering virtuoso.
Possibly the most underrated guitar player ever, people love "flashy" guitarists eg Eddie VH, Steve Vai, Joe Sat etc, great players but can be hard work to listen to. But watching this guy play is an absolute effortless pleasure.
He makes it look so easy! He's an amazing guitarist, and song writer, and vocalist.
This man takes time out of his life to give a free lesson, something that is rare and unique in this day and time, and people complain, I'm just speechless.
Aaron Freeman ... no doubt...I agree... this player can bring tears to my eyes...complaints aren't necessary ... one of my favorite tracks is The Ledge.... how bout you ?
what else is he doing?
John Mayer: "Bro, hold my beer"
And here we are eight years later and not a single negative comment to be found.Good job drumming up thumbs up over nothing .
"Rumours" and "Fleetwood Mac" are still two of the strongest albums ever recorded and Buckingham's playing was integral to the band's sound at the time
JoJo Mama in your opinion?
tango in the night was also amazing
@@333daveh5 no, I think the fact Rumours sold 40 million + copies and remains one of the best selling albums of all time suggests it’s many people’s opinion…
They’re not even the best Fleetwood Mac songs…. Peter green has way more hits
The real Fleetwood Mac✌️
LB is an incredible player ❤ one of my favourites , he’s also very humble .
Buckingham is one of the most under rated players on the planet.
I think only to those who do not know what a great guitarist is. Buck Dharma is also in that group of "underrated"
MechanicalMartialArtist Buck Dharma is one of the best rock guitar players around. He has originality and sense of melody
I cant agree that he's under rated because he's the lead guitar player in Fleetwood mac. The biggest and most well known band on the planet. My hero
I don't really think he's under-rated. He's been on the covers of guitar magazines for decades.
Good to see people still commenting on this video. I agree he is in no way underrated as a player, singer and writer. Underrated by who?
He may not be quite as famous as Page, Hendrix, EDDIE, or Gilmoure, but anyone who knows anything about rock and guitar history include Buckingham on their list of innovative and influencntial players.
Plus he is very well spoken and humble.
But wow....I see I made comments on this 6 years ago.....how the heck did they let that guitar pass??? Filming for a major guitar mag to be distributed to how many 1000s, and the guitar is painful to listen to.
Humble like only true legends can be: "... It's an extension of my limitation."
"... It's an extension of my limitation." means applied talent.
Wow, thanks Lindsey for actually teaching this lesson! Very special. Now when anyone asks how I learned this song, I can say "Lindsey Buckingham taught me how." :-)
And you wouldn't ne lieing
Always wanted to learn how to play , "Never going back again," , seems like it may pretty hard.....maybe some day
Very encouraging to hear you describe your playing technique in such a humble and self-effacing way.
Thanks Lindsay.
Love your playing.
I've enjoyed it and your songwriting for years.
I’ll never get tired of watching this video every so often as I learn guitar. There are new nuggets of info in there you can understand more as you gain experience, thanks Lindsey!
He is so amazing. He seems like someone that would be really interesting to speak with. I love his primitive, natural way of playing. So thankful for him!
A real pleasure to hear a true legend speak with such humility
One of the most underrated guitarists in rock and roll. I rank him way up there.
Yep, top 10 easily...
One of my favorite guitarists of all time.
"Don't read music and never took lessons." Amazing !!
Not a bit unusual. None of the Beatles knew how to read music.
Same here learned to play guitar on my own and never learned how to read music,I guess you can call it a gift...
Not amazing. Reading music is nothing but a limit. Imagine not being able to speak unless someone typed it all out for you first. The best musicians couldn't read a note of music.
How nice if him to demonstrate his picking style and the chords by slowing it down for the rest of us mortals. That was a gift. Thank you Lindsey Buckingham.
Lindsey is a very modest genius.
+Electric Ether 101 When you invite abuse...it's impolite not to accept it graciously.
+StratsRgreat This is actually against my grain to banter with people like this on the net. I'm actually sorry it came to all these comments. I was truly just disagreeing with something you said. Nothing more. I'm erasing my shit... It doesn't sit right with me to look at it. Peace.
@@Vibration1129 I have no idea what the mess was that you are referring to, but please understand me when I say to you:
*Bravo Sir! I love people with REAL integrity and straight up class on the internet.*
You are probably a wonderful person in the real world.
Me when I play a chord and it sound right: I’m a guitar God
Lyndsey Buckingham: I’m a limited guitar player
Just saw him perform in Franklin, TN. Was front row/center and only a few feet from him. He is absolutely amazing. I'll treasure the memory forever.
I have always loved and appreciated his playing . He's so underated. He's truly a master of his instrument. I love him and Fleetwood Mac .
For anyone who has never heard it, the album "Buckingham Nicks" (available as an import only now) is fabulous and foreshadows Buckingham's great work later with Fleetwood Mac. Some of the tastiest electric guitar solos ever written (e.g. Go Your Own Way) and deliciously delicate acoustic work (Never Going Back Again), as well as just crazyass go-nuts guitarslinger stuff (Eyes of the World).
This man is the reason I got back into guitar recently.
It's a great release. It's one thing I could do all day and forget about everything else.
same
Me too. Yesterday started learning " Never Going Back again"...
Greetings from Germany, O
Same. I'd got burnt out on traditional picking guitar and needed a new inspiration. So I learnt how to Travis pick and used this man's songs to motivate me as I love Fleetwood Mac. 2 years later I can bust out Big Love, Never Going Back, Landslide, and Rhiannon. Currently learning Chet Atkins' version of The Entertainer which is a challenge for sure but so much fun, I've never been this passionate about playing.
I finally saw Fleetwood Mac live a few years ago and realized the extent to which Lindsey Buckingham's unique fingerpicking style was the driving force for nearly every Fleetwood Mac song.
The outpooring of love and respect for this guy i really love it.
Thanks for sharing your time and insight Lindsey! What a legend :D
Thank you Sir. Your time is appreciated.
absolute legend!! love his playing and love his tuning!!
I’ve always felt like Him and Stevie Nicks should switch names
LoL Me too
@@dieselyeti So very true rotfl
Hahaha excellent observation.
I was a young buck at a record shop back when the album "Buckingham/Nicks came out. Looking at the cover I said " wow, Lindsey is a cutie pie". The clerk said "my man, you do know that Lindsey is the dude don't you?"
Let's just say we had a good laugh. You learn something new everyday I guess. And hey, I went on to see them at Day on the Green with Gary Wright and Peter Frampton in 1976. Wow, that Stevie was a cutie.
😆
He is a quiet genius. He took his talent and he took it up - to unimaginable heights. What a kind, gentle, demure, modest, amazing musician. He has brought inestimable joy to the world through his brilliant guitar playing. We are immensely grateful.
Amazing how humble he is even though he is such a genius .
Appreciate Lindsey's sharing 'Landslide' with us.
I remember that when I bought 'Buckingham - Nicks' album before they joined Fleetwood Mac I thought that Lindsey was the girl and Stevie was the boy. GREAT 'Raw' album and you can definitely hear the style that they brought to Fleetwood Mac in it.
Exactly this! The song, Don’t let me down again, is a perfect example. It could easily pass as a Fleetwood Mac song.
Fleetwood Mac is not Fleetwood Mac without him, period...
Unless they dumped Stevie and Christine as well and got Peter Green and Jeremy Spencer back in the band.
A New Horizon everyone knows fm are mick, John, Lyndsey Stevie and Christine and has been for 40 plus years.other early lineups were very temporary and musically totally different
So true. I miss his sound. Voice and guitar.
@@chiefbrody3406 I understand what you are saying, and yeah, from about 1971 until 1974 before Lyndsey and Stevie joined are not exactly the greatest years, but there happen to be a lot of fans of that first lineup. The influence that the Peter Green years has had on aspiring guitarists and bands for the last 50+ years is worthy of any Hall Of Fame induction alone. Watch the Peter Green "Man of the World" documentary and you will appreciate that version of FM a heck of a lot more. Long live the Green God!
The Mick/John/Christine/Lindsay/Stevie lineup is by far my favorite, but I think you could make the "Fleetwood Mac isn't Fleetwood Mac without" comment since the very first lineup change. They've gone through so many lineup changes that it's hard to say what is and what isn't definitively Fleetwood Mac now. What bothers me about the current lineup is that they're playing a Crowded House song and a Tom Petty song. They're both great songs, but that's weird to me. I know they played Stand Back and Don't Let Me Down Again as Fleetwood Mac in the past, but those don't bother me too much because I love those songs and they were written by people IN the band. Wait. I'm being a hypocrite. Stevie and Lindsay wrote Don;t Let Me Down Again before they joined the band, so... Ok. I'm done blabbering. :)
Lindsey, your style is what inspired me to pick up guitar at 58. For all the technical snobs, I fantasize about being able to play guitar like you. Thank you for that.
OMG,.......I Bow Down to One of my Musical gods......A Fantastic song..............Thank You Guitar World
Bend down TWO times.
Lindsey is a true class act. As is the rest of the band, Mick, Christine, Stevie, John. How cool is Lindsey to sit down and show us all how to play Landslide. What a giving thing to do. Teach us all how to feel the music of FleetwoodMac. With all sincerity, Thank you Lindsay! It's a kind of magic.....
I love this song so much.
I hit a brick wall with my playing and this amazing song inspired me to carry on . Thank you
So humble...amazing guitarist, and one of my fave songwriters and guitarists. Even named my daughter after him in 1993...
Reupload this in high-def please!
Thank you Guitar World and Lindsey Buckingham... one of the greats for sure!
"I consider myself a refined primitive." Great line.
I loved watching him and Paul Simon on SNL years ago. Not a shred of competition or vindictiveness between them as soon as LB started jamming during a sketch, PS just can't contain himself, like an excited puppy or gofer, is just amazed and overjoyed that someone is playing the guitar. Its hilarious and wonderful.
Thank you for doing these lessons Lindsey! This and Never going back again were always two of my favorites, now if I could just play them like you do! Thanks for all the great music you’ve made over the last 50 years, great music never grows old.
They say "Never meet your heroes", but he seems like an exception. I could listen to him talk for hours. I love it when people who are 'that good' are also super low-key and easy going... :)
The third iteration of "The Mac" took a while for me to accept. Listening to Lindsey Buckingham's guitar playing and C. McVie's, Nick's and Buckingham's songs won me over, after not too long.
Hope he recovers 100%. Imagine getting a guitar lesson from this legend. Damn.
Finally! After scouring the internet for the right way to play this and encountering so many tabs and 'how-to's' that are clearrly missing something, I stumble upon this video and all becomes clear. Thanks you. Such a beautiful song.
very under rated guitar player. love his style.
Underrated? Not in our household! :-)
lol....good answer :)
An utterly amazing and hypnotic player.
The way he explains his playing techniques corresponds perfectly to the way he played with his band: not as a showpiece, but as a suitable part in a perfect song.
This guy is in his own league. Incredible musician, singer, songwriter.
Really like the stuff I've heard him do, he seems like a really nice guy.
He is one of THE coolest guys ever! One of the world's best guitarists.
Not very nice from what I've heard which from various all say he is a big jerk who was very physically abusive to Stevie and his ex girlfriend after Stevie. Drug usages also came into play as well w/ all that and the shouting that he did.
@@cmissshelleymichelle This is the absolute truth. One of my favorite guitarists but not a very nice person from what I've read.
@@Paul-fb1em They were both on drugs. And the abusive went both ways. Stevie wasn't a saint in the situation either. I'm not excusing what he did, but that was then, he's different now.
God Bless you Lindsay for sharing this for free on You Tube xxxx
Such a humble man. My 1st husband had explained to me that Lindsey Buckingham was the backbone to Fleetwood Mac. What an incredibly talented man and group. I wish he and Stevie could have worked through it all. ❤ She didn't understand him.
Thanks for sharing. Fun to hear Mac’s discussion of how his guitar picking evolved.
"the fact that I play lead without a pick is just an extension of my limitations" ... says the genius o_o. Definition of underrated.
Lindsey is a top inspiration to my guitar/songwriting abilities, always has been (since the 70's!) Have seen him play live twice, and would always go to a show if he comes to the Portland, Oregon area again! I'm playing in an original band now, and most of the covers we are selecting for live shows are Fleetwood Mac songs so it's alot of fun for me! I agree, give credit where credit is due.
This guy is in love with music!!!! Genius, he is!
His guitar is tuned down a half-step - Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Song is normally played with standard tuning and capo on 3rd fret. It is much easier to follow his playing by ear if you match his tuning.
What song name?
I'm here after watching Paul Davids and I look for him all over UA-cam, who's with me?
Me
@@qwertyzxcv123 Oh Thanks! I thought I would be the only one doing that😅
Same
🙋🏻♂️ big fan of LB here
Me
I was 15 feet from Lindsey Aug 11,1980 in Mobile AL far left stage, my right, at the Fleetwood Mac general admission concert and yes was amazed he jammed like a beast on the guitar with fingers only. He is in my mind one of the guitar Gods and is very talented.
Gotta give Stevie some serious props for her melody line over those beautiful arpeggios. Pure harmonious magic.
Disagree Stevie has never been a strong singer. She is a great entertainer. Christine McVie and Lindsey were the ones who made the harmonies and melodies sound great. Stevie is just a glorified background singer.
He's the only one in all these videos not using a cappo and he's performed this song more times I could dream of! Beautiful!
The most underrated guitarist ever. Glen Fry, Zappa, he blows them all away.
Duh frey rulz duh zappa rulz duh eEveryone else losers lil
Thank you Lindsey. The guitar parts you come up with are amazing. You are like the ultimate chef adding just the right ingredients to make the perfect stew!
He’s being very modest in this video. Especially with the song “landslide” One of the most beautiful acoustic songs ever written. it is not a simple. It took me close to a year to learn it, but I included the lead as well.
It inspires me that someone who I consider to be one of the greatest artists of my lifetime does not read music. There is structure in music theory, which gives us a place to start, but when we get past that, to a higher creative level, that structure can become a cage and a means to over-analyze/criticize the beauty of the music. I love this man... free, humble and genuine. Thanks for sharing.
Actually I wasn't thinking about his b string being out of tune when I watched this. I was only thinking what an incredible privilege it is to have Lyndsay Buckingham giving us a guitar lesson. For free. I would have killed for stuff like this when I was 16. People's sense of entitlement these days is sometimes breath-taking.
This aint a gig. He's taking time out to show us how it's done. So fucking what if his guitar is slightly out of tune.
I couldn't agree more, LOL!!!! Some cheese with that whine,eh?
+James Pardee yes!!!! exactly.
Very well said. But damn that thing is out of tune. I think it's more than just one string. What an idiot. Just kidding! Awesome video.
As a bit of an aside, for some reason this brings to mind when Neil Young was on Howard Stern this year and someone handed him an out of tune guitar. He said he didn't know how to tune it, that he had world class guitar techs maintaining all of his gear for him and didn't have to know how to tune anymore.
I am still baffled by that. I have to assume he just didn't feel like playing, because I can't imagine forgetting how to tune a guitar. I can imagine never having learned how to tune a guitar, if I had started playing since the advent of the now prevalent digital tuners, but that's not the case for myself and certainly not Mr. Young.
And yes when I think back to what I used to go through to try to learn different songs, etc. it's almost upsetting. It's amazing and awesome that we can now just look up anything about anything.
OllytheOl is not for free you still have to pay for Internet to watch the video jijijijijijij
I agree, who cares about the tuning? Lindsey is so, so talented. I'm not as proficient as everyone else. Has anyone else found this video at HD resolutions, so we can see his Travis pick method more clearly?
Who wouldn't want to learn from the guitarist of Fleetwood Mac? The way he talks about classical music intertwining with all these genres is amazing.
Very kind of him to lay down a version for us mere mortals...if you've ever tried to learn one that mimics the studio recording or his live performances you know what I mean..
Timeless masterpiece by one of the greats and a hansom chap to boot!
"It was always about the song..."
It shows.
Thanks for this.
Much more interesting than band exploits.
all the best guitarists taught themselves-Jimmy Page and his delta blues heroes, Clapton, Hendrix list goes on forever
Guitar World ~ That's pretty cool getting to talk with Lindsey Buckingham one on one like that . He's as cool as they get and then some . Thanks
"Refined primitive" my eye... The single greatest guitarist of our generation...
Had the blessing of meeting him several times in a previous career. Late 80’s..
He was ever so cool then too.
Very real dude.
Talent just - in every atom of his being.
But nice as can be,
At least to me he was- and I’m nobody important.
Tuning: Try tuning to 432 Hz, and down 1/2 step in standard tuning. I tried this and got a match. The 432 hz tuning I find really warm, harmonious, beautiful for both singing as well as guitar. This is one of my favorite songs by the amazingly creative and talented Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks since I was a kid. GREAT song!
Ahh, this is known as Verdi's 'A', (instead of the standard A at 440 HZ) which is an alternative tuning that is mathematically consistent with the universe. Music based on 432 Hz transmits beneficial healing ...
I was wondering what i was doing wrong
Dats how tune😁😁🗿
@james taylor.com, he mentions that guitars are supposed to be a tad off tune. I forget the technical reason why, but he explains in great detail. Interesting.
ps.....james taylor.com
By Far the most underrated 🎸 player ever.
What a great sounding guitar that is. One Shure SM 58 the only thing picking up the
sound, no onboard electronics, just the guitar, the player, and the feel. Marvelous.
He is a great player, whether or not his 2nd string is a touch out of tune or not! Come
on, people. Picky, picky, picky. He could play most of us under the table and you all
know it.
Such a fabulous guitarist!!! ❤
Lindsey and Mark Knopfler are the 2 best guitarists on the planet...
O wow, that could be my line!! Yes! Agreed!
Not even close.
Neither one of those guys can touch SRV.
Now SRV could play ANYTHING those 2 can/could play, BUT....neither LB nor MK could play anything/everything SRV could play.
....listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan or Rory Gallagher and come back to us 👍👍
I'd imagine Mark Knopfler can afford a tuner, while Lindsey is recently unemployed. ;-)
My excitement to learn he sang and played holiday road from national lampoons vacation was immeasurable..some of his best work lol.
Pretty damn great for being a "limited" guitarist. Great!
Thanks for loading
Thanks, Lindsey!! I love the guitar/vocal duet on this the BESTEST!!!
agreed, watch Big Love live, he's incredible
Absolutely beautiful sounds...
7:09 - 7:30 "if i leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me..."
Free bird
Same chord progression as the first couple lines of freebird.
I coukd listen to that "picking" all day long. My grandfather was a gifted musician. He was well known as the "fiddler" and at one point was even offered a position in the band of Patsy Cline, but he was also a well known beer drinker so he missed out on the opportunity. He could also play a banjo, and because of this, he also played caustic guitar. His "specialty" happened to be "picking" when playing caustic. "Landslide" and 'never going back again" are two songs that i will ALWAYS dedicate to his memory.
It's cool to know that Lindsey never took lessons and never learned to read music and I'm in good company... I'm not saying I'm even close to his talent but learned to play guitar on my own and can't read music as well...
Love Lindsey's guitar playing. there is no one like him. Without him Fleetwood Mac would never have reached the hights it did,
Haha yeah sort of but not exactly. I think if Peter Green would have not had a mental breakdown we would have know Fleetwood Mac as a epic British Blues band. Oh Well and Black Magic Women (Santana covered that song) are musical gold.
Finger picking level: expert.
No mate, a very simple, basic picking pattern:/
06:39 slowed down to help us learn finger picking on 'Landslide'
05:12 faster version for once we've mastered the slower version.
V grateful for him taking the time & trouble to do this tutorial. And I was so relieved to find there was such a thing as a professional musician who doesn't do guitar picks - I've never been able to get on with them either, so it gives me hope.
Who cares about a slightly out of tune string? We're here listening to HIM and no one is listening to US. Lindsay is legend.
Slightly out of tune? HE is very great in your mind no doubt, but my God--that fiddle is way out of tune.
I want to see you play what he just played on a guitar in tune...go ahead try it.. i am thinking his out of tune guitar will sound better...lol
Blows me away. Can't read music (so would not know how to fit chords together my theory) yet writes/ plays some of the most melodic music.
Landslide at 3:45
He is so humble. One of the best.
sounds like he learned to play almost exactly the same way i did. everything was about learning songs
i first saw stivie in a concert in chicago and i really loved it so i followed her all the way to wisconsin to see her next concert it was an unforgettable experience for me of course that was 30 years ago she is still an incredible singer
Lindsey is a great guitar player and he's giving a free lesson! Wow! But what do some douchebags here complain about? - Lindsey's G string might be out of tune a few cents!?! Wtf ! It's moments like these when I hate the internet, youtube and all the so called social media...
