Crayfishing from the bank

- Crayfishing season 2018 has gotten off to a great start for me. The crayfishing itself was a little bit slow, however I managed to catch 5 or 6 in an area that is not really a red hot crayfishing area.
Here in Victoria the cray season opens on the first day of June each year and closes on the last day of August. It is literally only open for the winter months.
There are a lot of different species of freshwater crayfish in Australia, and in this video I was fishing for the Murray spiny freshwater crayfish which is endemic to the Murray River system.
Here in North East Victoria we have three main types of crustacean. We have freshwater shrimp, yabbies and Murray crayfish.
In the United States crayfishing is exceptionally popular, and they too have many different types of freshwater crustaceans and many different names for them. Some names include crawdad, crawdaddy, crayfish, mudbug, and crayfish.
It does not matter when on the planet you are, catching shellfish, or crustaceans of any kind is always great fun.
Personally, of the crustaceans that we get here in North East Victoria, yabbies are my favourite. I love freshwater yabbies. I find the meat to be a bit sweeter than the crayfish and they're much easier to shell, to get the meat out. When shelling a yabby you can do it with your fingers wheras it often requires pliers or some other type of cutting device to extract the meat from crayfish,
In New South Wales, it is not uncommon to hear people call Murray crayfish lobster. I assume they call them lobster due to the fact that they are so big.
Euastacus armatus is the scientific name for Murray freshwater crayfish

I have just added you into my will. Thanks Robbie you are the man.
Good to see still small crays around. The biggest one i have caught was on a rod and line and was a total length of 42cm.
Another great video mate, I really enjoyed it, that was a very nice cray, I liked the video of him backing away to freedom. Keep them coming mate.
Gavin Clark Thanks heaps Gav.
That's a great fishing day, nice big fella at the end, good to see them go back!
Lambs fry and bacon yum. Lovely big cray. Glad you put him back 🐟
YES... finally someone that agrees with me. LOL I LOVE lambs fry and bacon. Thanks, even if he was protected I think something that big and old has earned the right to rule the river. Beautiful old creature.
Good job robbie on the video's I think I've seen them all now. Keep up the good work and thanks for the tips...
That's a hectic video Robbie! I caught a small one of these in the Yarra River - could not believe my eyes!
Good effort mate, season start and you are all over them. I am heading out this weekend mate, two nights, three days on the Crays. Going to be a ripper. Cheers Moose.
Lamb's fry and bacon and brown onion gravy with the hearts and kidneys on the side, a delicious breakfast great videos robbie keep up the great work
Thanks Martin. YUMMO...you're making my mouth water!
That's the biggest crayfish I have ever seen. That is a monster. I am going to link this video to the United Kingdom crayfish association group page on face book. Wow, that's how they do it down under. I amgoing to give your channel a massive plug on my next video too. Awesome video mate, way to go.
Wow thats amazing, didnt think they existed anymore
Nice pricklebacks! Down Hamilton way they have the southern version I have seen them as big as that big one; I saw one ages ago now that was the size of a footy; it was massive! They are ultra cool. The ones in the Otways don't get that big and the ones I have caught tend to be reddy/brown in colour. I am surprised you didn't throw a line in and drown a few worms. Oh you will catch them on worms too!
Hope to see a cray episode with Shane Orr again. Love the cray vids Robbie.
Hey Robbie, Noah here from Texas, USA. Hey great video. Quick tip for catching crawfish, use canned cat food. Just poke holes into the can.
Hi Noah thank you so much for watching from the USA and thanks also for the great tip.
Absolutely amazing Robbie, so entertaining I love it, do some more Murray cray vids, keep up the good work!!!!!
Jess Gedi Hi Jess thank you so much for your wonderful comment. Hopefully I can make more crayfishing vids this winter.
Oh my god. This is my favriot video from you robbie by far!
Thanks do much Merv. With this weeks rainfall I'm not sure when I will be able to go craying next.
Ah rito. Thats all good. Keen 4 the next one
Love ya work Robbie, fishing for the future 👍🏼 great vids mate
Hey Ruby love this bed I'm going to be going crayfishing this weekend by myself cuz I got no one to go for Crowe fishing with
Hey Jaycod, that sounds awesome buddy. Good luck on the weekend.
Spell check fail?
Hey UF he's only a young kid mate. He goes to school with my daughter. He's a legend!
Haha ok then! Just some of the word substitutions looked LIKE predictive text. Cheers Rob!
When you lifted he net that had two in it [ the first net ] they looked liked yabbies
Nice job RobbieFishing! Keep it up 👍🏻
These are beautiful, I would keep them in aquarium
I think the same. If they are in the aquarium trade they are also protected from extinction
Really enjoy your videos, monster crays!
Awesome bro to see these videos and all the hard work of editing
Robbie we love your videos go fishing etc from home
damn those were some big yabbies! haha
Great Video! That Cray was huuuuuuuge!
Thanks mate that's what I reckon.
Glad to live in america, no size limit, no female restriction, and no worries of overfishing
Hi Robbie, Once again another top quality video of yours, it seemed like a good day, would have been better if it wasn't so cold i reckon, lol. Correct me if i'm wrong but that looks like the Ovens River, I'd be happy with the day u have had, thumbs up to you Robbie keep up the good work
Adam Vallentine Thanks Adam, it was a great session mate. The cold is all part of the fun when crayfishing mate. Sorry I couldn't talk last night, I had my wife and kids in the car waiting for me.
robbiefishing Hi Robbie, that's okay no problem at all, i'm pretty sure we will cross paths again seeing that we live in the same area, maybe one-day i could go and wet a line with you
Cool stuff mate. I've got a wee package set, and will get it in the mail in the next little bit. Should produce a few fish for you hopefully.
Kiwi Fisher Thanks so much mate, you're such a legend!
robbiefishing no worries at all

Thanks so much mate. I love yabbying as well.
Great video mate can’t wait for more
Thanks Seth.
Nice one Homie! that steep bank was making me nervous it looked a tad precarious!
Alexander Hector haha I wasn't nervous but kind of expected to fall in. LOL
Great video Robbie!. I'm wondering how often you check the nets? Hard to tell from the video.
Brother, you are cray cray. cheers legend.
haha I sure am. LOL Thanks mate.
Loved that Hat!!
i actually loved this
Mmmmm........I think I'd fancy a bit of lambs fry now.
Wish I could catch them here Robbie, but unfortunately I cant . It is all for the best I guess.
Hi Phillip, hopefully they return mate. It's a wonder they do not do any restocking after blackwater events and natural disasters like they do with other species.
You are correct Robbie.
I live in Vic and I really wanna go yabbying and crayfishing but we don’t know where to do so, can u please help me?
so cool
good on ya robbie keep up the great videos!
Thanks Nardi.
Hey Robbie great video! Just wondering do you no any good cray spots near Echuca way thanks
Chandler Culph Thanks mate. I don't sorry buddy, I don't know that area very well at all.
Cant wait for more crayfishing videos
Thanks mate, hopefully I can make a heap more this winter.
Sad to learn that the Murray crayfish isn't generally found downstream of Mildura due to past overfishing, and environmental change :(
That's very sad Marc.
Awesome video ✊
Got to go in the murray river
Well done keep it up Robbie
awesome video. Hey mate when did you get a go pro and what do you think of it
Thanks James. Yeah mate I have been using a gopro Hero5 for around 3 or 4 months and absolutely love it. I love my HDVCS sunglasses camera too, but the gopro has a lot more manual features which I enjoy.
Hey Robbie, whats the hottest that water has ever been? Im wondering what the maximum temp for Euastacus Armatus is
Hey robbie ya legend! Awesome video mate as always! I'm yet to get the nets out this season, I better get my ass into gear!
Which video editor do you use?
Cheers, Will 👍
I haven’t watched the vid yet but I know I’m in for a good one
Thanks so much Jordan, I hope you enjoy it. :)
Lobster bisque recipe with thos would be GREAT!
Are crayfish around here are nowhere near that big they're a different type but still wow! I just posted a video of me Ryder and Cora fishing and we catch some crawdads and rider shows how he can hold one without getting pinched LOL
WOW Awesome, I will have to check it out. Thanks for the heads up. You guys have crayfish, crawfish, crawdads, mudbugs. LOL I get so confused!
robbiefishing LOL yeah there are so many different common names I grew up calling them crawdads most people here call them crawfish down Southern United States they call Mudbugs there's a handful of different strains but for the most part they're the same thing
Good lord, those things are huge! But what we lack in size, we make up for in volume. In Louisiana, the catch is 45 million kilos a year. I live in Tennessee now, and people use them as bait up here (unwashed heathens).
Em 7:45 a patinha pegou no dedo e apertou, imagina a pata grande. My God...
I'm not sure what you said, but thank you for watching and leaving a comment.
@@robbiefishing I live in Brazil and I enjoy a lot of his videos, in the comment I wanted to say that the little paw took his finger and squeezed it, imagine the big one? Congratulations on the channel, I wish I could one day go to a place like that! Good night, and thank you for your attention.
@@flavlog_motos WOW thank you so much for your very kind words. Have a happy new year my friend.
@@robbiefishing Thank you, my brother, for you too! Happy New Year.
That good practice follow the restrictions. Return the undersized 👏🏼
Whos hyped for cray fishing !!!
Me. LOL
Lol last time you were catching crawfish you were in shorts and armless, now what the difference in the two? Last time you were keeping them and they were small. Awesomeness by the way
4 DA KIDZ Fishing Hey buddy, they're a different species. The ones that I catch in summer are yabbies. They're much smaller and live better in stagnant water. These ones are crayfish, they live in fresh flowing water and are active in the colder months.
great vid Robbie
Thanks heaps Bluey.
Hi Robbie, would you know if there are any crays around Kyneton area?
jock578 Tom Hi mate I'm not sure sorry, I don't know that area very well at all.
Good on ya robbie
Bloody awesome video mate I am going to have to give it a go. Can you tell me When does the season end?
Thanks Brad, you will love it! The season ends at midnight on 32st August. Essentially the season is open for every day of winter only.
robbiefishing thanks mate..
Spikylicious!
Hey Robbie I have a question, any good Crayfishing spots near geelong and anywhere I can catch rainbow trout?
Hi buddy, I honestly do not know sorry mate as I live so far away. I know that the crayfish that we get here are different to the ones you get and subject to different rules.
robbiefishing thanks Robbie it’s hard to find I good place around here!
Bloody cold out lately
Onya Robbie for letting it go you're a @#$#@#$& legend
Thank you so much mate.
Terri Alexander homemade bycicle rim drop net Robbie as a kid: dad dad there's a Cray in here
Terri Robbie's dad: here we go again
Robbie as kid: that's one heavy bycicle rim
Hahahahahaha
Robbie with rubbish that is going to stink if it is a small amount I freeze it and put it in the bin when I put the bin out.
Wise minds think alike Ritchard, that is exactly what I do. Those two plastic bags that had the meat in them are still in my freezer right this moment waiting for bin day!
Nice!
Hey bro, where were you when you were shotting this video?
My friend caught a male cray ar barooga creek and it was15 cm the body
Hi 😎 what is the best bait . That you catch more crayfish on ?
Hi mate lambs fry is great bait. Fresh wild rabbit also works very well.
Awesome 👍 Thnks dude 😀
lets go
what do Murray crayfish taste like yabbies????
we eat lamb offal in nz all the time. it's so fucking good
Heyy Robbie I just want to introduce you to me that I have eaten a different picese of sea animal such as snail, Tortoise, eile fish , cat fish and many more different fishes.
I m from Bihar State in india.
Hello my friend. WOW such a diverse diet. I could not imagine eating a snail. Thank you for watching.
Awesome
Thanks mate.
Do a catch n cook please
that one looked like he had his hands up for (i give u know under arrest)
Okay, what is the difference between a Yammie and a Crayfish? Inquiring Moron would like to know.
Hahahaha Keith. Your comment made me laugh. A yabbie is basically an Asutralian version of a crawfish.
Scientific name is Cherax Destructor.
The word yabby is derived from the aboriginal word "Yabba"
I wonder if it's illegal to catch an oversize breeding pair, raise up a whole bunch of crayfish babies and then release them back into the water from whence the parents came? I think you'd need a permit or something, but replenishing crayfish stock in popular areas would keep the future going!
Excellent idea but you would definitely need a permit as you would be in possession of oversized crayfish.
@@robbiefishingTime to write some nice letters to the local council! Also I love your fishing videos, they're a great way to de-stress while I'm studying for exams!
no to the lambs fry mate
Too much work for my liking, especially with such tight size limits. 90% head and shell even when a legal one comes along. I'll just stick to Murray/Darling River cray and shrimps. I love good size shrimps.
They crays are so dark in colour
i like to use bacon. when crayfishing
Can one use Crayfish as bait?
rly nis Hi mate there's a minimum size on them. Anything over that minimum would be a huge big spiky bait!
robbiefishing thanks for the response, Robbie :) say if I were to catch a legal-size crayfish, could I use to flesh of the crayfish (after humanely putting it down of course) as bait for trout?
Not first!!!
You must have been very close though Jedi!
O
The biggest catch is your breath lol breath my friend lol
