Crayfishing from the bank

  • Crayfishing season 2018 has gotten off to a great start for me. The crayfishing itself was a little bit slow, however I managed to catch 5 or 6 in an area that is not really a red hot crayfishing area.
Here in Victoria the cray season opens on the first day of June each year and closes on the last day of August. It is literally only open for the winter months.
There are a lot of different species of freshwater crayfish in Australia, and in this video I was fishing for the Murray spiny freshwater crayfish which is endemic to the Murray River system.
Here in North East Victoria we have three main types of crustacean. We have freshwater shrimp, yabbies and Murray crayfish.
In the United States crayfishing is exceptionally popular, and they too have many different types of freshwater crustaceans and many different names for them. Some names include crawdad, crawdaddy, crayfish, mudbug, and crayfish.
It does not matter when on the planet you are, catching shellfish, or crustaceans of any kind is always great fun.
Personally, of the crustaceans that we get here in North East Victoria, yabbies are my favourite. I love freshwater yabbies. I find the meat to be a bit sweeter than the crayfish and they're much easier to shell, to get the meat out. When shelling a yabby you can do it with your fingers wheras it often requires pliers or some other type of cutting device to extract the meat from crayfish,
In New South Wales, it is not uncommon to hear people call Murray crayfish lobster. I assume they call them lobster due to the fact that they are so big.
Euastacus armatus is the scientific name for Murray freshwater crayfish

Nice pricklebacks! Down Hamilton way they have the southern version I have seen them as big as that big one; I saw one ages ago now that was the size of a footy; it was massive! They are ultra cool. The ones in the Otways don't get that big and the ones I have caught tend to be reddy/brown in colour. I am surprised you didn't throw a line in and drown a few worms. Oh you will catch them on worms too!

I wonder if it's illegal to catch an oversize breeding pair, raise up a whole bunch of crayfish babies and then release them back into the water from whence the parents came? I think you'd need a permit or something, but replenishing crayfish stock in popular areas would keep the future going!
