A proper crayfishing session

- After being limited to just 2 hour crayfishing sessions, I was so excited to be able to go out for my first proper crayfishing session of the season.
Although the crayfishing wasn't red hot, I was still able to get onto a few crayfishing including one really big crayfish, my biggest this season so far.

The crawfish yall have over there make the ones we have look like babies
haha Thanks mate. These are the second biggest species of freshwater crayfish in the world, second only to the Giant Tasmanian Crayfish.,
Another cracking video. That big female looked like a snapping turtle. What a wonderful place to spend the day. Thanks for sharing mate.
Hi Brad thanks so much for watching mate.
Bang on Robbie. Bloody good show fella. Top man, great craic, all good. Happy fishing! From Cornwall G.B
Before you walk out the front door, give yourself the popes blessing, up, down, side to side while mentally doing the 4 point check-list, "spectacles, testacles, wallet and watch!" -up, down, left, right!
Good catch Robbie, my youngest nephew who is 15 is called Robbie! 🦘🇦🇺🍻👍
Robbie. You seem like a great guy. Thanks for the vids.
Thank you so much mate.
👍👍👍🙏🙏❤just a little tip I learnt Robbie the crays are easier to get out of the net if you don't tip the net upside down because the spikes don't get tangled I just let them crawl out
Hey buddy excellent idea. I must do that instead of being so damm impatient. Hahaha
@@robbiefishing h,h,h,ha 😊
When your net gets snagged Robbie, try a couple of wraps around your waist/hips and walk backwards up the bank - saves raw hands (but doesn't always save the net!). See you caught another 'clock' lol. Funny you should mention horses - A pony goes to the doctor and tells him, “Doc, I think I’m dying. I have this terrible sore throat.”
The doctor assures him, “It’s okay-you’re just a little horse.”
hahaha Thanks Frank, and thanks for the tip. I laid it over my shoulder and walked up the hill. I reckon my collarbone was going to break before the net.
I went to the doctor myself last week. I had a plastic horse stuck up my backside. The doctor has told me that my condition is stable!
@@robbiefishing Lol. I put a bet on a horse to come in at 10 to 1 - and it did! Unfortunately all the others came in at 12.30.
@@captainfrank01 hahahahaha My pop use to tell me that what I was a kid. "I backed a horse at 10 to 1, but it didn't cross the line until half past 3) haha
@@robbiefishing We must share a similar sense of humour!
Love the cray videos !
Thanks so much Keith, and I love making them.
Robbie I unwind just watching you unwind. A few peaceful hours on the bank of the river is going to always be good for that.
haha Thanks heasps mate. I could feel my emotional wellbeing heading south there for a while. LOL
Wow!!! Ripper video robbie. And also what a ripper size female you got! Keep it up
Thanks so much mate. How awesome is it to see such huge female crays.
BETTER than nothing!
Great vid mate....People like you are what we need in fishing..Whether uts carp or cod, its about having fun...
You have made Redfin fishing a sport..
Thanks mate
To conquer your impatient check, maybe show us how to make a bit of damper with some home made jam?
Thanks for sharing your unwinding
Wetting a line or throwing a cray net solves most first world problems
Keep them coming
Love your work
Thanks so much Moo Moo. Being by the water always seems to calm me down and help me unwind.
Mate, the old hunt for the Red Ockrayber, man v's dinosaur. Love it.
Thanks Moose, sure is a ripper way to pass time.
Awesome video thank you robbie good to see you calmed your farm at your happy place
Thanks so much. Being by the river is very calming for me.
A rough start to the day but a good way to finish it. Congrats on the oversize female, what a beast!
Thanks buddy. The crayfishing wasn't red hot, but ticked over nicely. I caught 5 for the 6.5 hours that I was there. You caught 5 in the one net on the same day. hahaha
Now THATS what I call a yabbie! Reminds me of when I was a Billy lid
I had to do it. After you said Wangaratta, I google mapped it. How wonderful that area looks. Owens River and Reedy Creek looks like a amazing place to fish. Thanks for the videos!
haha Thanks mate. Wang is my home town, I have lived here all of my life and love it.
Nice pricklies Robbie! I did the same today, Went to my council office to pay rates notice, only to find I LEFT the invoice @ home! Drove back, got it, went back to council office to find it closed! BUGGER!
haha UF, how annoying is it. Sadly, the older I get the more things I seem to forget when I go fishing. LOL
@@robbiefishing You get too caught up with eveyrthing you have or want to do, & inevitbly, SOMETHING gets forgotten!
You are a champion for letting them go mate.
Thanks so much mate. They taste nice, buy I reckon eating them is only 1% of the fun... catching them and being there is what uts all about for me mate.
Another exciting crayfish adventure, hard work . Had my first session for the year with a butterfly net last week and struggled, got a lot of females in berry which is good to see.
Thanks so much mate. Females in berry are always a great sign hey!
@@robbiefishing definitely great to see, I get excited like you when I go after the crayfish lol.
Hi Mike ...Robbies pretty entertaining aye !!
@@livingterminal5792 Love the guy full of enthusiasm on these crayfish yabby hunts, I know just how he feels, he's just like me lol
When I was 11 or 12 we went camping down in Washington State, where I got introduced to crayfishing. The technique was to tie a string around a piece of bacon and let it sink. The crayfish would cling on until they reached the surface, so we'd use a small fishing net to scoop them. Have you ever tried bacon? For prawns and crabs raw chicken works better than dogfood. Punctured tins of seafood catfood work well sometimes as well.
Here in the states, we trap crayfish in a very different way. I make my own box style trap out of chicken wire, bait them with hotdogs, raw meat (cheap stuff at the store), drop them in the morning and retrieve at dusk or drop them in the evening and pull in the morning. If I'm feeling particularly adventurous, I go after them using my hands and a mask/snorkel/fins.
That is awesome. Those types of nets are illegal here in Australia. We can use them for yabbies, which are much smaller like your crayfish, but they have to meet strict maximum size requirements to ensure they don't catch these big crayfish.
@@robbiefishing I would love to have those mudbugs here in the states but "invasive species" laws and all that kind of prevent me from growing those huge freshwater lobsters here in Nevada.
Hi Robbie I noticed with your net mate where it’s broken if you can get a piece of tube in that same shape join it at each end and either put clamps on it or is the metal can be welded well the tube in just an idea mate 👍🇦🇺
Hey Ross thanks so much for the great tip mate. I was thinking about putting a couple of small hose clamps there but though there would be no point, but now that you mention it, if I put the clamps on plastic they will grip better, thanks so much champ.
No worries Robbie glad to help mate you have a good one and catch plenty more fish mate enjoy your UA-cam videos when are you going to do another little bit of a cook up 👍🇦🇺
You should try putting a Go pro in the cray net
Thanks mate, I have done it one but caught nothing. It is a bit unnerving sinking a $600 cameras to the bottom of the river in winter though. LOL At least in summer I can go swimming if the net gets snagged. LOL
I look forward to trying to catch some of those.
I have caught alot of marron but never one of those beasts.
Great video mate.
Thanks mate. I would love to catch Marron myself some day.
Sounds like you’ve done yourself a mischief today Robbie always love a good crayfish video spot on with the crayfish Robbie🔥🔥👍🏻❤️❤️
Hey Rory thanks so much mate. Done myself a few mischiefs mate. LOL This wasn't filmed today, it was filmed 4 or 5 days ago. It usually takes a few days from filming to publishing, there's a fair old process.
@@robbiefishing Fought so just watching one of your redfin videos keep up the good work Robbie see you in the next video mate
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it was only 2 nets per person
Another great vid robbie glad you finally got out for a decent sesh! And wow that Jenny was cray cray
Thanks Chad, sure was a ripper mate.
Hey Robbie,
Awesome vid keep up the great work!😄
Thanks so much buddy.
simple to fix damaged metal rings.
go to hardware shop and buy some plastic tubing the same diameter as the steel cut 150mm of tube, place in hot water, and fit tubing over steel when cool ,job done.👍
A right fun activity. Never saw such giant fresh water crayfish. You ever eat them? Just wonder if they taste like lobster.
Nicely done i usually weld the the ring so the don’t come apart
Thanks mate. Excellent advice.
Good on you mate, sounds like you were having one of them days before you pull the nets! I too am feeling a little stressed out but have a weekend booked in a Shack down the Glenelg river, can't wait!
Ps. I think your prickly back spot had been pilford
Thanks Ray. I hope you have a ripper time on the Glenelg. The crays are a funny thing. You can cray all day and catch nothing, then catch 10 in one check of the nets. LOL
From a Tasmanian. Dry dog food for bait is basic. Oily fish heads. Like salmon are the go rabbit is also good
i hope you have a nice spread to keep mayo on
hahahahahaha
Keep at it mate! I am jealous of the size of those few crays.
Thanks mate, they sure are big prehistoric looking things aren't they.
Keep it up mate I've been waiting for this video since I spoke to roahn and he showed me the biggest Cray what a ripper
Thanks champ. I hoper you are getting onto a few yourself mate.
@@robbiefishing I've only got the one small one so far I'm hoping to camp out this weekend to find some
Great video with great commentary cheers mate
Better luck next time mate. Enjoying your vids!
Thabks so much JD.
Good one mate good way to unwind 👍👍👍👍👍 did the river drop 6inches when you pulled that big cray out hahaha
Thanks Cam. Hahaha I reckon it was closer to 8 inches mate. LOL

keep up the great work mate!
Hey Lachie thanks so much champ.
Loving the dad jokes 🤣 great video
haha Thanks mate.
Great vid mate love them keep it up
Thanks so much buddy.
Hey rob, can you recommend some good places for fishing/yabbying in the Seymour area ?
Hi mate, I don't really know anywhere down there sorry apart from the Goulburn River. I've actually never been fishing in Seymour.
@@robbiefishing do you think the Goulburn river will have anything ?
G'day Robbie, some very nice crays. Great looking day. Haven't been able to wear a t shirt in the Yarra Valley for ages. 🥶🥶
If you haven't tried them yet, give chicken knecks a go. It's all my boys and I use and they work great.
Good luck on your next trip and keep up the great videos.
Thanks heaps mate. I'm a shocker. I wear shirts when most people don't. Haha
I actually used chicken drumsticks drumsticks today with great success. That video will be up on Sunday evening. 👍👍
Hot damnnnn! Looks like the size of some of the Crays I get in the damn ocean :O
haha Thanks mate. These are the second biggest freshwater crayfish in the world, second only to the Giant Tasmanian Crayfish.
@@robbiefishing Wouldn't want one on the end of my toes that's for sure! Also it's great to see you chuck them back in mate, you're a good bloke!
Great looking spot ...any fish in there ?
Thanks Tim, yep it's a great Murray cod fishery.
Bonus ya didn't fall in today lol Great stuff Robbie !! You could teach Jeremy Wade a thing or two !!
hahaha Bonus points for not falling in. LOL Thanks champ.
“Reminds me of my first wife a bit”😂😂
LOL mate, I took my eye off here for a few minutes and she was goooooone!
Love the video.
Where abouts are you from ?
Im from Albury is any of your spots around the Albury area .
Thanks mate, I am from Wangaratta, just down the road.
@@robbiefishing do you know any spots for crays in Albury? Thanks mate
Hey Robbie how much did they sting you for 5 nets at adventure camping and fishing?
Hey mate, they were $15 each of 5 for $70. It might sound like a lot, but $15 is similar to a cheaper Murray cod lure.
@@robbiefishing thank you. They’re $20 each over in Yarrawonga or 5 for $80. How was your cray you took the other day? My mate and I got one each on the weekend, they were absolutely beautiful
@@billymay6461 sounds awesome buddy. I have not taken any this season mate.
Anyway I could get a pair or 2 sent to the USA?
Want to start a breeding program like i did for axolotl after a cpl years of breeding I sent back 1000s to Mexico where they was basically extinct .
Nice, can taste those big legals Robbie.
Thanks Deb they sure do taste nice but to be honest I prefer a feed of yabbies. LOL
bloody unreal video champ!

Hey Tommy thanks heaps mate.
My own stupidity. Good on ya mate. Not for being forgetful but for fessing up.
Hahaha thanks Jody. I takengreat pride in my clumsiness. If I didntnlaugh at myself I would go even more insaner 🤔 than I already am. Haha
Great vid mate, laughed so hard when you started the Mayo joke… I tried to convince a friend to call her foal Mayo about a year ago. She didn’t get the joke..
ps bring the massive goatee back.
hahahahaha Thanks mate. LOL As for the goatee yes I am definitely growing it back. I am getting sick of being asked for I.D. at the bottle shop. LOL
Is this the Murray mate...!!
No mate, it's the Ovens. I think there's a lot more in the Murray to be honest. I pulled a net up at Bundalong with 9 crays in it once, all undersize. haha
In berry.??? Isn’t that in south Australia haaa ..
Hahahaha
Dad joke
Didnt you hear the sulphur crest laughing at you did he know something ????? You may need to shift pozzies. Stuart Palmer Adelaide Sth Australia could have been hit hard
haha I think they were laughing at me mate. Next time I am down that way I will definitely try a new spot.
Use chicken or turky legs, cheap and they work good. They faf on the skin gives off smell. You can come on over and eat at my house , looks like had a skinny take there.
I am an auto typer....... Love ur videos maaate, keep it up...👌😎. Lmao
haha Thanks so much mate.
That cray is huge
Sure was a ripper mate.
In the end the day turned out ok, and that's what matters.
Absolutely Alex. The river always calms me down.
Ok who else seen it ? 10:43 is that the rest of the bird floating down the creek ?
hahaha I just went and had a look. LOL I did not even notice when I was crayfishing. I think that may be the same part, it was only a little bit upstream for here where I filmed it.,
Now we are really talking!
👍👍
15:34 haha I see what you did there.
Hay Robby what GoPro do you use
Hey mate, there is a link to my gopro in the video description. I am using a Hero9
Carry a few small hose clamps for repairs
Getting a pair of gloves may be a good investment so you don't get rope burn while trying to pull the nets out if they're snagged
Hey Zeke thanks for the awesome tip mate. I may have to duck into Bunnings before the next lockdown gets here any buy some. LOL
Best bait is KFC chicken after you eat the skin of course you gotta try it
No crocodiles in the water
❤😮
it would be good if you could harmlessly tag the crays that you throw back, see how many times in the future you recatch them
That would be a great idea wouldn't it. It would show how easy they are to catch multiple times.
OK the missus reckons you should get a tattoo of a ruler on ya leg so you'll always know how big they are !!
hahaha That could be risky. I better put it on my lower leg for safety reasons. LOL
@@robbiefishingi figured you'd like a window left open :)
aLL THE BEST MATE.
Robbie as a Vet, i beg you Please don't feed your dog goodos or lucky dog lol. They're full of fillers, chemicals and by products. The reason it's a good cray bait and holds it's shape is the very reason why it's bad for dogs, basically just flavoured plastic with no nutritional value. Also the way it swells up and doesn't break up is what happens in a dogs stomach. If you have to feed your dog kibble, stick to ivory coat, has real 35% protein with real meat, no by products and is full of fruits, veggies and fibre with ZERO fillers.
(Sorry bud, the vet in me had to comment lol)
How does this compare price wise to goodos?
Be interesting to see how this would compare in a cray net.
Hi Nic, thanks so much mate I truly appreciate the comment. I actually do not give it to her very often. She loves sausages. LOL At the moment she is eating some fresh venison that was harvested by a friend. I will look into the Ivory coat, thanks so much for the great feedback mate. No need to be sorry, if this is your area of expertise then I am more than willing to listen.
Can you edit in the field?I f so may break up your impatience.Sit back relax you will reap the rewards.Remember on yer bike.I want a see Ural Two wheel drive 2022
Hey Adam, I can edit in the field on my laptop, and have done so a few times, but to be honest I prefer to edit at home. My home PC is much more powerful and faster, and I just love the relaxation of crayfishing.
Robbie try some whiskers cat bickkies another i know that work good is a piece of pork fat
Mate you live in the country leave the house unlocked unless you are scared.I have turkey ,geese and peacock security working for me and a dog that will not bark.they are safe dog is cool just looks angry

robbie dont lose your shit over reality lifes to short to stress just catch more lol andy sarsfield
These craws are spiked and looking all mean. The ones we get in FL are smooth big guys. But the ones u where getting in this lake where crazy looking
Haha they sure are. Beautiful, prehistoric looking crustaceans. These are Spiny Murray Crayfish.
If you are not catching then keep moving your pots .
Great idea mate, but much easier in a boat than on the bank.
I thought they were lobsters? And crayfish were in the sea
Hey mate, in some parts of NSW they call them freshwater lobsters, but we call them crayfish here.
Opposite in North America - crayfish (crawdads) in freshwater, lobsters in the sea - except in tropics were the crayfish in the sea don't have the big front claws.
@@robbiefishing yeah iam in Tasmania and they call them lobster and you get a flogging by parks and wildlife if you catch them I think it’s like 100k fine and 10 years jail something like that
