Hi Mate many thanks for sharing I really enjoyed it :) I am watching from overseas Robbie, can I ask what species are these? Are they your native species? Some escaped and they are now some waters and rivers infested with them. They are reducing stocks of the native white crayfish. Anyway big thanks again Robbie I really enjoyed watching.

There a beastly looking Cray. Can you have them as pets over there. I am from WA and we have marron over hear. I would love to see a comparison of the two. Marron can get to the size of a beer carton. Do they have any breeding programs for them over there???
Hi mate, no breeding programs that I am aware of. As for keeping one as a pet, I do not know. I suppose you could as long as it was legal size and in season when you keep it. I am unsure how easy they would be to look aster though.
@@robbiefishing been a freshwater cray i would think they would be pretty easy to keep. I am suprised they arnt been sold in pet shops. It would be nice to see them keep in the aquarium trade, then there numbers would grow.
Fun fact, yabbies and murray crays are omnivores but 97% vegetarian. They don't eat the meat bait we use, only reason the go for the meat is to make algae from it when it rotts.

Robbie, you called that second female pregnant, are the eggs already fertilized while she is carrying them? Or do they get fertilized, like fish eggs, as they are being layed? Just curious. Always great videos 🤙
Thanks Grunt. You know what? I have no idea. That is a very good question. Definitely something for me to look into. I know a fait bit about trout spawning, and cod spawning, but need to learn about crayfish spawning. I'm going to research right now. Thanks mate. 👍
I just had a really quick look, and it says that mating takes place in May and is most likely triggered by falling water temperatures. The eggs grow, and remain under the females tail for around 140 days until late spring. Once they hatch, the baby's stay attached to the mother until they have shed their skin several times, by which time they are then mature enough to head off and fend for themselves. Fascinating!
rabbit road kill is the best bait, the more maggotty the better. i used to eat murray cray sangas when i was a kid, but their numbers got scarce so we stopped collecting them for a few years to thier numbers go back up. actually do we v tag breeding crayfish? id like to think so.
I think what made the rules get changed so much was back in early 2000's a heap of gum leaf and ground litter flowed into the Murray River and chocked of the air in the water and and the Crays came to the banks and pouched the event only lasted a little while but it got really had people where coming up from Melbourne and taking buckets of them..... after that the rules changed and you still don't get the really big one we used to enjoy...
Hi mate, one of the things that I love about crayfish is the relaxation in between checking the nets. It is I these breaks that I can play with my cameras, film time-lapse footage, take photos, stoke the fire etc... Taking a fishing rod would buy I to my relaxation. Haha

Your so Lucky Robbie .. Down our neck of the Murray These are of limits... We used to get these things by the 1000s back in the day .. So many you could hardly lift the net .. And your spot on with the losers and there rubbish ... Like you side WHY ???
Hi Robbie. I think the restrictions need to be tightened further and the penalties exponentially increased. 2per day and max of 6 per year per person might still not be sustainable because many people take heaps in a season; a maggot I know tried bragging about taking his 4 weeks of annual leave with 3 mates last year and eating crays every night. That’s about 60 taken per person (240) legally (but I wouldn’t count on it) but NOT RESPONSIBLY. I despise people who think/say they’re doing the right thing while destroying what they claim to love and respect. There’s not even much flesh on one of these! Yes, I do catch crays every year (if I’m lucky and if I get time and if my bit of the river is accessible). I take two in total and cook them for a family of four as a delicacy not a whole meal. I also want to encourage all responsible fishers to report it when they see illegal fishing. I’m not saying go and confront everyone you think might be doing the wrong thing but do take note of their description and vehicle registrations and report it: if fisheries turn up and they’re following the rules then no harm-no foul but if allowed to get away with it they’ll destroy your fishery in one foul sweep. This is what happened two years ago in Wodonga creek, there were a lot of undersized crays about and a large group of ‘peoples from another nation’ taking absolutely everything. I don’t know if fisheries did anything but I do know there were no crays last year and it may take decades for the population to recover. End of rant.
Thanks Glen. I agree with you 100% mate. People can stick legally take a lot of crayfish. I could take Holly, Skye and Lauretta with me and then use 20 nets and keep 8 crays. I love crayfishing too much to do anything to risk it. It would be hard to enforce a seasonal limit, but i reckon it can be done with a tagging system. Buy 6 tags, and if you get caught with a cray in your possession without a tag on it.... BANG! You're done. They use to use a similar system for kangaroo culling.
Thanks mate. I thought hard about posting my comment because I thought ‘I’m going to get hammered for this’. I didn’t think of a tag system, great idea. I actually considered naming names but decided that would be going too far but the people in question know who I was referring to though I doubt they’ll change their ways. Cool video bro. Cheers.
No governments need to start putting breeding programs into owner fisheries take a look at Wa Cockburn the blue swimmer crabs have been closed for over 5years because you can take female crabs????how dumb are owed fisheries

@@robbiefishing Thanks for taking time to reply mate. Keep up the good work Robbie!
Nice video mate👍
Thanks so much Andrew.
Hey Robbie do you know if any of these crayfish are in the loddon river? I live right on the river and am keen to catch a few if I can 🔥
Hi Luke, to be honest I am not sure mate. My suggestion would be to give it a crack and find out. 👍
Nice Robbie when is the next carp fishin video you reckon
Thanks mate. I'm not sure at tgis stage sorry. I have the next week and a half of videos already filmed and there's no carp vids in there but I definitely will be heading out during the winter months.
good job i might have to get some 👍
Thanks mate. Good luck, I hope you can get onto a few.
wish the river would go down here so I can get into them
Good stuff
Thanks mate.
Great video Robbie, Ben is my wifes best friends brother lol was told he ran into you
Hahaha Thats so funny. From St James. He was a really nice guy, very easy going. Ironically he is doing my old job in Benalla at Hemdersons. I use to work on the same machine 10 years ago. Haha
Sometging tells me that he is doing a much better job at it than I did though. Haha
@@robbiefishing haha yep, thats the one. hahaha what a small world lol
You got into a PRICKLY situation!
Haha yep.
@@robbiefishing ;o)
Ripper video Robbie
Thanks so much Dan.
Fun fact, yabbies and murray crays are omnivores but 97% vegetarian. They don't eat the meat bait we use, only reason the go for the meat is to make algae from it when it rotts.
Thanks Col, I have actually heard that. When I was a kid my pop always kept yabbies for bait and would feed them tiny amounts of tomato.
Good one mate
Thanks so much Cam.
hi robbie good looking cray mate
Thanks mate.
Nice one Robbie, would have loved you try the 12cm jenny on the garden glove.... LOL!
Thanks mate. Haha I reckon that wouldnt have ended very well. LOL
Are you up for a ‘dare’ Robbie - show us your facial expression by using a bigger cray 😂
LOL
Have you ever tried carp for bait
Hi mate, I sure have. It works very well. In fact, I used it on cray opening last year.
Mate, didn't cray season used to be the months without an R in them. May till August.
Hey mate, that was just an unwritten rule. There never use to be an official season. When the season was introduced it was always the 3 winter months.
@@robbiefishing Thanks mate, i can answer your question why people leave Macca's rubbish everywhere, they are pigs.!!! I once found a pile of McDonalds rubbish at the actual summit of Mount Buller, i could not believe it. Take care and stay warm.
@@cudgee7144 Thanks mate. WOW, that is hard to get my head around. Unbelievable.
Rippers 🔥
Thanks mate.
Is that spot any good for cod
Was there a few weeks ago didn’t catch a thing
Hey mate, definitely plenty of cod there. It's a very hard task to catch cod in this area in the cooler months.
@@robbiefishing
thanks Robbie,
Must of been a bit late, seen the biggest cray up in the clear water was a monster
Night time is best , as they are out of the burrows , canned cat food with oil , put some holes in the tin and let it seep. They are protected in SA
I've used that technique for yabbies and it works a treat.
I have been watching these videos where there use a go pro to film the crab pot. Long story short the net is normally after 45 mins the crab pot is full and they start to leave
Awesome. I have watched a fre a.erocan crawfish videos like that. They're unreal aren't they!
Where’s the best river for fishing Robbie
Hi mate, thays a broad question. I would say the Murray River because it had a bit of everything including huge Murray cod.
@@robbiefishing thanks mate
Let the big cray grab your finger that could end in tears Robbie 🤣
Hahahahaha Maybe one day. LOL ... Maybe!!
You're not wrong about road kill bait. I actually made a video a few months ago where I made yabby sangas. Haha
Did you take your rods with you as well?
Hi Ivan, no mate I was just crayfishing. I prefer to just chill out in between checking my nets.
Wheres the rods ? Gotta fish between pulls
Nah, I prefer to focus on my crayfishing. I love the relaxations part between the rods. Playing with my cameras, stoking the fire etc...
Hi mate, hypoxic water events (Blackwater) has definitely had a detrimental effect to crayfish populations throughout the Murray darling basin.
ha you had me at I am going to let it bite in on the finger HA
Hahaha I had it happen without gloves on once..... and never again. Haha
@@robbiefishing go on I promise I WILL laugh.......
Hey Robbie why don’t you take a fishing rod with you wile you are waiting for the Crays you could be fishing 👍
Hi mate, one of the things that I love about crayfish is the relaxation in between checking the nets.
It is I these breaks that I can play with my cameras, film time-lapse footage, take photos, stoke the fire etc...
Taking a fishing rod would buy I to my relaxation. Haha
Where are you ...and do i see spikes on teir backs what type of cray are they ???regards😊
Hi Lee, I am in Australia mate. 👍👍These are Spiny Murray Crayfish, the second largest freshwater crayfish in the world.
@@robbiefishing thanks matey im a little further north than you near sydney n.s.w. we have smoothie ones here and a big blue marron biggest ive caught was a foot long in a dam that was fed by a mountain stream in funnel web central i let it go it was a painted bley green color and when we were kids my cousin and i caught heaps in western n.s.w in dams too so are you familiar with the song wangaratta wahini by the captain matchbox whoopee band 😄😄😄
Hahaha I have never heard of that one. Sorry mate, I read too much into your question. When I read "Where are you" I assumed you were in America. I get a lot of comments along those lines from people in the USA. It probably has something to do with me using words like "Crawfish" and "Mudbug" in my search tags to help draw them in. Haha
They are fascinated in my crayfish videos by how big they are, and are even more fascinated with my yabbying videos, because the word yabby seems to intrigue them. LOL
And yes, I am in Wamgaratta. 👍👍
@@robbiefishing we found with yabbies in dams the tend to like the edges and borrow into the bank thats where we got most also in south australia near mannum we tried ynder a wharf while on holiday did ok but had to leave the pots out all nite here they arent real active in winer so spring to late autumn is the time also the szing is interesting are the fisheries red hot on that one 😊😊😊😊
Hey Rob, I've been meaning to ask! WTF has happened to The Moose? He's gone totally dark! DO you still hear from him???
Haven't seen a comment or vid from him in several years!
Hey mate, he pops in from time to time but I don't hear from him a lot. Maybe his interests have changed? Was it when I said "I'll bring you back" that reminded you of Moose? Haha
@@robbiefishing Yes, it DID actually in part! But I thought I'd ask, as YOU are closer to him than I am! LOL!
We WERE gonna team up on the Murray a few years back. He has my ph number but I never heard from him. I was just curious!
Cheers!
Udang lur 👍
Your so Lucky Robbie .. Down our neck of the Murray These are of limits... We used to get these things by the 1000s back in the day .. So many you could hardly lift the net .. And your spot on with the losers and there rubbish ... Like you side WHY ???
Thanks Sam. Hopefully our tight regulations will help the numbers built and they may distribute further ba k down the Murray.
Net number 4, is that a ladder on the bank?
Sure is mate. The local kids like to swim here and without that ladder they wouldn't be able to get out of the river. Haha
That was a big Jenny
Thanks mate, a beautoful big old cray.
I remember a video you did last year when you got pinched by a crayfish by accident without gloves and it kept bleeding like crazy is what you said
Haha it sure did. Was that last year or the year before? I can't remember. What i do remember though is that it was in this exact same spot. Haha
💛...a nice warm fire down by the river, you oughta have a wienie roast while you're waiting... or at least, s'mores...
Haha Sounds like the icing on the cake of a wonderful day.
